“And this is the real news: Everyone is entitled to it—no matter the size of your workplace, no matter whether you have a full-time or part-time position. As soon as you’ve been an employee for at least six months, this time is yours (and your partner’s) to take. Better yet, the new law ensures that your job will be there when you get back. Until now, only workers who have met certain requirements at companies that employ more than 50 people have been given that protection. Thanks to this bill, that’s one less crisis for new moms and dads to worry about.”

Legalize it, sure, but if we do not address the huge racial disparities at the heart of the matter, the barrier between those who are allowed to open up pot shops and profit 1000% and those who are arrested for using the same drug that their white counterparts freely use, the issue is pretty much moot

I truly look forward to seeing and hearing PBO on the campaign trail after the convention. With Joe Biden working his magic in mid-Atlantic states and PBO undermining the Republican candidate at every turn, HRC is going to have some very strong wind beneath her wings.

We all knew that the war on drugs was created to incarcerate the blacks. Just as we knew that Crack was created because heroin and power cocaine was too expensive for the common black person and they needed my people to be hooked on something more than just weed.

If I have to, I will camp out to be one of the first in line to see this movie!😀

“Hidden Figures,” a movie with Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae, about African American women involved with NASA’s early missions, films in Canton this month. The movie, also with Kevin Costner, is based on the nonfiction book by Margot Lee Shetterly, “Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race.”

From the book’s synopsis on Amazon:

“Set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow South and the civil rights movement, the never-before-told true story of NASA’s African-American female mathematicians who played a crucial role in America’s space program—and whose contributions have been unheralded, until now.

Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of professionals worked as ‘Human Computers,’ calculating the flight paths that would enable these historic achievements. Among these were a coterie of bright, talented African-American women. Segregated from their white counterparts by Jim Crow laws, these ‘colored computers,’ as they were known, used slide rules, adding machines, and pencil and paper to support America’s fledgling aeronautics industry, and helped write the equations that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space.

Drawing on the oral histories of scores of these “computers,” personal recollections, interviews with NASA executives and engineers, archival documents, correspondence, and reporting from the era, Hidden Figures recalls America’s greatest adventure and NASA’s groundbreaking successes through the experiences of five spunky, courageous, intelligent, determined, and patriotic women: Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, Christine Darden, and Gloria Champine.

Moving from World War II through NASA’s golden age, touching on the civil rights era, the Space Race, the Cold War, and the women’s rights movement, Hidden Figures interweaves a rich history of scientific achievement and technological innovation with the intimate stories of five women whose work forever changed the world—and whose lives show how out of one of America’s most painful histories came one of its proudest moments.”

    Harrisburg GOP begins budget strategizing
    Updated: April 3, 2025 — 1:08 AM EDT

The most detailed - and pointed - GOP battle plan came in an email from Rep. Brad Roae, who for nearly a decade has represented Crawford County, in the state’s northwest corner, and serves on the Finance and Human Services Committees.
    […]
Roae called for closing state-owned residential facilities for individuals with intellectual disabilities, reversing the Medicaid expansion that added coverage to hundreds of thousands of uninsured Pennsylvanians, selling State Stores, and repealing prevailing wage policies.

He said arts grants and even the state meteorologist may have to go. And he proposed ending higher-education grants for students studying “poetry or some other Pre Walmart major.”

Roae also left no doubt as to his view of their role: “Everything needs to be flat funded or cut. People elected us to cut spending, not raise taxes.

My daughter and my son-in-law’s business is not based in NY it is in PA…they have less than 10 employees …would they be responsible for giving their employees 12 wks of paid leave…their business could not handle that….i read the article and they said that no matter how small after 6 mos they would have to offer paid leave….how does a business as small as my daughter’s handle this…

    • 63 vcprezofan2
      April 4, 2025 at 6:28 pm

Pf, every business may have to offer paid leave, but it doesn’t seem logical that each would have to provide 12 weeks. Maybe that number is for larger companies AND after years of service? After all 12 weeks is 3 months - how many businesses would survive if all employees got 3 months off annually? I’d certainly be interested to hear what you find out from your children in this regard, Pf.

Since the intent cannot be to kill small business, I am assuming that there would be ‘small business’ provisions in the bill. I cannot think of any ‘everyday’ business here that provided more than a 2-week vacation in the first few years of employment.

        April 4, 2025 at 6:45 pm

This article says it will be phased in gradually starting in 2018 and funded by a $1/wk payroll tax per employee:
“The time off will be funded by a small weekly payroll tax of about $1 per employee. That was a key selling point: Businesses will not have to pay anything to give workers this much-needed benefit. Many companies say paid leave helps them retain employees, ultimately saving money that would be spent recruiting and training new workers.”

A payroll tax will cover the costs (kind of like unemployment insurance). Businesses will not have to pay out of pocket for the coverage.

          April 4, 2025 at 6:50 pm

:) Sounds better. I couldn’t imagine the law getting passed if the impact on all businesses would be as great as having to fund 12 weeks vac. per employee.

Jackson State University was founded in 1877 as a four-year public university; it is one of the largest institutions of higher learning in Mississippi and a Historically Black University originally established to educate newly freed African Americans to become ministers and teachers. Mrs. Obama has delivered remarks on an HBCU campus each year she has served as First Lady.

Echoing the call of the First Lady’s Reach Higher initiative, Jackson State University and the Jackson Public School District collaborated to form the first laboratory school in the Jackson area. Since 2013, Blackburn Laboratory Middle School has partnered with JSU in an effort to transform Blackburn into a highly successful middle school for replication and study of successful practices in the district, state, and nation.

Recently honored as a National Association Secondary School Breaking the Ranks Showcase School, SFIS is a leader in Native American education and proud of its history to educate the next generation of tribal leadership. Graduates of SFIS participate in the culture of their communities and will have the skills to pursue the education and careers that will benefit them, their families, and their people. For the past five years, SFIS has had an average graduation rate of 98%, and over 90% of this year’s graduating class plan to pursue a post-secondary degree.

Actually, I shouldn’t joke, because the way he’s set up his rallies is dangerous, as we all know - not just for him, but also for all attending or protesting them. Maybe instead of the red ballcaps, he can hand out bullet proof vests to everybody.

We’ll get through this, America. We must!

I truly don’t believe that Trump can win - Cruz could - not Trump. If Trump wins the US is in a much worse state than the world believes - and for this I blame the US media.

Just went to a link at TPM (the liberal news). On their front page is ONE story about the democrats - Bernie is winning Wisconsin. Every other story is about the GOP. They may be negative stories - but the GOP is the news in the USA. For this the media is 100% to blame. They have accepted that racist and misogynist men have the right to rule in the USA
