Morning everyone, I haven’t been able to be around this week, my mother had a fall and badly fractured her arm so I’ve been back and forward to the hospital. She’s doing well now and is comfortable, so that’s a huge relief.

Endless thanks to Nerdy for doing all the posting, we’d be lost without her.

Heading back to the hospital now but will try to catch up with you all later today. Love and hugs.

I know that this must be so scary, Chips. Sending you and your mom thoughts of love, comfort, and strength. The village will be fine, the only thing that you need to do is to concentrate on your mom. Please tell her that another daughter of a beloved mother who is all the way in Florida is thinking of her and praying for her recovery.

        GM CEB.

Annieb posted this last week, and was wondering if you’ve got any local updates:

IIRC, annieb posted an update that said FLOTUS’ garden tour later this month doesn’t include the Jacksonville area😦 .

        From the article:
“Bringing Food Forests to Northeast Florida said the garden is open for people to pick from 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

‘This is a solution to food scarcity in northeast Florida. We have several food deserts here where people don’t have access to fruits and vegetables, and certainly not organic ones'”

The garden honors garden the life of 9-year-old Somer Thompson, who was murdered in 2009.

The Cruz/Bernie wins in Wisconsin mean that: 1) the Bernie people will be insufferable today, even though his delegate haul was small; and 2) there will now likely be a brokered GOP convention since Republicans allocate delegates a different way and Cruz walked away with 33 last night. I believe that HRC now has 1300 delegates and ahead of her are the delegate rich, diverse, closed primary states that are favorable to her. The Democratic race is going to be over long before the Republican one, although Bernie is likely to hold on until the convention just to be a spoiler. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

HRC is finally starting to fight back. She let BS frame her and she had pivoted to the GE. Time to look and be strong, and start framing BS right back.

All the pundits are “advising” her not to piss off the BS supporters, to which I say…. b.s. They are going to whine anyway, they are delusional in their Bernie cult & their hatred of her, and many aren’t Dems anyway. Be a fighter, look strong. Don’t cede the field to BS.

It may sound like a smear, but it unfortunately is a fact: Bernie is unfit and ill-prepared to be POTUS. He is a zealot with no interest in governance, although the taxpayers have paid his salary for three decades. He would be a disastrous POTUS. It’s time for Hillary to take the initiative to define him, instead of being defined by him.

Why aren’t Bernie trying to help the down tickets cause if by some chance he were the nominee, he couldn’t get all the things done he is promising those young people without help from a Democratic Congress. Seem like to me Bernie might be in just for Bernie. I could be wrong.

        • April 6, 2025 at 9:56 am

He’s spending huge amounts of money on ad buys, etc. and to not much effect. I think it was Maddow, maybe, who asked him if he was going to start contributing to the Dems and he said he was focused on winning the nomination now. She asked about if he’d start later and he said maybe he’d have to see. So yeah it’s all for him and screw everyone else to put it crudely. So strategy it seems insane. I keep hearing what a good campaign he’s running but I think it’s a foolish, short-sighted campaign. Dirty tricks, bleeding through money and no thought to what he would need if he were the nominee- short from other Dems.

U.S. drugmaker Pfizer Inc and Ireland-based Allergan Plc walked away from their $160 billion merger on Wednesday, a major win for President Barack Obama, who has been pushing to curb deals in which companies move overseas to save on taxes.

Pfizer said the decision was driven by new U.S. Treasury rules aimed at curbing such deals, called inversions. The merger would have allowed New York-based Pfizer to cut its tax bill by an estimated $1 billion annually by domiciling in Ireland, where tax rates are lower.

This is great! And it’s such a big story, affecting the business world and being about two big companies, that it should get lots of media play. We know that so many of President Obama’s successes are hidden or downplayed. I think this one will make a big splash. It also hits at the Sanders campaign issue “I’m the only one who cares about reining it Big Business/Pharma/etc. He’s all big talk (sometimes less than cogent talk) and no clue about action. Here is someone who doesn’t blow hot air, but quietly gets things done. One of the many things I’ve come to appreciate is how, when big actions can’t be taken, when the full frontal assault won’t work, President Obama finds ways to nibble around the edges, and those nibbles, in time, have big effects. He get very quiet and then, boom! Incremental change, baby! We will will be seeing positive, knock-on effects from many of his actions develop over the years ahead that we have no idea about now.

Republicans consider advantage of ‘losing with Cruz’

In a rare one-on-one interview, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said she’s “not even sure” that Bernie Sanders is a Democrat. During Politico’s Off Message podcast, she said: “He’s a relatively new Democrat, and, in fact, I’m not even sure he is one. He’s running as one. So I don’t know quite how to characterize him.” Clinton said she’s frustrated by what she called a “persistent, organized” effort to smear her political record. “I know that Senator Sanders spends a lot of time attacking my husband, attacking President Obama. I rarely hear him say anything negative about George W. Bush, who I think wrecked our economy,” she said. Clinton also said there wasn’t much difference between Trump and Ted Cruz, calling the Texan senator “a very, you know, mean-spirited guy.”

    Pfizer abandons $160bn Allergan deal

US drugs giant Pfizer has scrapped a planned merger with Ireland’s Allergan amid plans to change US tax laws.
The decision comes two days after the US Treasury announced fresh plans to prevent deals known as “inversions”, where a US firm merges with a company in a country with a lower tax rate.
The Pfizer-Allergan deal, valued at $160bn (£113bn), would have been the biggest example of an “inversion”.
It would also have been the biggest pharmaceutical deal in history.
Pfizer said the move was “driven by the actions announced” by the US Treasury.
Ian Read, Pfizer’s chairman and chief executive, said: “Pfizer approached this transaction from a position of strength and viewed the potential combination as an accelerator of existing strategies.”
He added that the company could look at splitting off part of the business.

If the GOP had any sense, and really wanted to gain traction with American voters, they would not have heeded McConnell’s obstruction pledge in Jan 2008. Instead GOP caved to bigotry and fear.

PBO desperately would like to retrain those dependent on fossil fuels in states like Oklahoma and West Virginia, would love to see those workers retrained in tech (e.g., hardware repair if they’re not interested in sitting at a desk all day) but GOP won’t allow the government to subsidize this training.

Producer Debra Martin Chase Sets Up ‘The Black Calhouns’ at ABC as Potential Miniseries

    Photo of Tambay A. Obenson

    April 5, 2025 at 7:06PM

In author Gail Lumet Buckley’s ambitious “The Black Calhouns: From Civil War to Civil Rights with One African American Family,” the daughter of actress Lena Horne delves deep into her family history, detailing their experiences from the Civil War to the Civil Rights era, starting with her great-great grandfather Moses Calhoun, a house slave who used the rare advantage of his education to become a successful businessman in post-war Atlanta. And from there, the two branches of her family that followed: one that stayed in the South, and the other that settled in New York City.

Buckley examines these lives and the major events throughout American history that they lived through. From Atlanta during Reconstruction and the rise of Jim Crow, to New York City during the Harlem Renaissance, and then from World War II to the Civil Rights Movement, combining personal and national history for a unique portrait of 6 generations in times of trial and triumph throughout American history.

Guess who said this? I’m really, really going to miss him. Really badly.

“After all, it’s easy to articulate a belligerent foreign policy based solely on unilateral military action, a policy that sounds tough and acts dumb; it’s harder to craft a foreign policy that’s tough and smart. It’s easy to dismantle government safety nets; it’s harder to transform those safety nets so that they work for people and can be paid for. It’s easy to embrace a theological absolutism; it’s harder to find the right balance between the legitimate role of faith in our lives and the demands of our civic religion. But that’s our job. And I firmly believe that whenever we exaggerate or demonize, or oversimplify or overstate our case, we lose.”

Exactly. President Obama goes at a problem from all side keeps quiet, until BOOM!
Sanders can’d keep his mouth shut, thus revealing he knows nothing.

I chanced over to Old Orange, thinking perhaps this breaking news might be front-paged, but nary a peep, not on the front-page or anywhere on the site. Instead a gaggle of diaries celebrating the pyrrhic Bernie Sanders’ victory last night in WI. Sanders’ outspent HRC 3-1 in that state, and all he got to show for it was a bunch of votes from privileged but clueless Millennials, self-titled “Independents” who are really Republicans of the Snowden-Greenwald-Uygur extraction, and a net gain of 10 delegates which did little or nothing to shift the delegate map or his path to victory as the Dem Presidential nominee.,

That’s why he doesn’t have any money to give down ticket Dems.

But delegate-rich OH, won by HRC with the same margin, is not supposed to be important. Even though OH has double the delegates of WI.

And in case no one has mentioned it, outside of the urban areas, Wisconsinites are gun nuts; so Bernie was a shoo-in. That, and as you said, all the fake GOP who either voted their libertarian b.s. or wanted the weakest nominee (that’s what happened in IL).

Bs & bots would rather yell than govern.

Besides BS proved in the NYDN interview that he hasn’t a clue how federal agencies work.

      He’s gotta go. Soon.

So Sander’s disastrous interview is getting some media play anyway. I thought maybe they’d bury it to keep his campaign going a little longer.

“For some political observers, the senator’s difficulty in providing direct answers to some questions reinforced their belief that he lacks a concrete plan to implement his domestic agenda and is ill-prepared to handle the global challenges he would face as president.
“If Hillary [Clinton] gave answers like this to [an editorial] board, she would be crucified,” tweeted Mark Halperin, the Bloomberg television host and co-author of “Game Change.””
