Judy Woodruff just ran through the usual BS about PBO not doing enough (pick your subject) when he did more and accomplished more that will be lasting than any other president and doing it in the face of relentless opposition. So tired of every interviewer saying the same thing. All of this is just a way to try to tarnish his legacy, not a true retrospective. I stopped viewing after about 10 minutes. The goal posts is always moved when A-A people reach it. The good news is PBO’s high popularity that will only increase. PBO also said long ago that he does not care who gets the credit as long as the work gets done, however because he has this attitude, his contributions will be known far and wide because they made people’s lives better. So many will sing his praises and when his critics really see the awful results of that with which he was succeeded, they will do so in a mournful tone as well.
I used to respect PBS News Hour and Judy Woodruff but she’s been a complete disappointment. As you say, just another journalist with an axe to grind.
She can’t overcome her privilege.
I literally just kicked my boss out of my office after his goading me into discussing politics. “Obama refused to work with anyone,” was the last straw. When I tried to tell him non-Fox related truth, like the GOP saying “No” to everything, he said it wasn’t true.
My boss is a Trump wannabe. I have been doing this “consulting” job for 8.5 years. He gives no raises to anyone. And of course, he did everything he could to deny health care to his hundreds of workers, by breaking up his businesses into small entities. He’s a sociopath, who supports sociopaths.
It is one of the hardest things for me, 57andfemale. My heart goes out to you and hooray for you, surviving an onslaught of baloney and poison in your own workplace where there are issues beyond unfriending someone or blocking them on twitter. If people see him and truly do not like him, okay, there you go. I don’t care for some people and I adore other people. But the criticisms of POTUS for the VERY MOST PART are lies. They are based on lies falsehoods, propaganda, fabrication, just outright dishonesty. It gives me satisfaction to see proven over and over again that in order to get people to hate him and doubt him and blame him, they are forced to lie and lie and lie again. That is just not true. You can find him saying it right herein TOD archives, but they stlil insist that the truth is not true because a lying liar who lies told them so. They had to say total lies about him, the economy, Obamacare, the works, and about the glorous and beautiful Michelle as well. That you can lie without consequence and sell people on falsehoods — it’s breathtaking in the evil and wrong about it. How many times did I see and hear him say “I will meet with and work with anyone who wants to fix improve make it better, in terms of the ACA. Not a peep. 8 years. and for 6 years they have had total control of the house and the senate. They could have done so much — but crickets. And then they get reelecgted and get to turn the heads of weak lazy people who sold their souls to the lying liars who benefit. I love his sense of humor about it, and I am so sorry you had to endure such a sorry outfit in your face. You rock. Hang in there as best you can and remember that karma is slow but it does deliver.
Incredible that an entire show was dedicated to First Lady (forever in our hearts) Michelle Lavaughn Robinson Obama. Her influence will live long after she leaves the position and will only increase as she lives the unfettered life of active citizen.
The Obamas are the only First Couple during my lifetime (Eisenhower to the present) who are leaving with the moral authority and popularity (based on how they have lived their lives and contributed to the greater good) that will allow them to have an influence here and abroad for the rest of their lives. With the two of them, what you saw was what they were. The lived their authentic lives, held to to their values and opened their arms to the world. I can see future politicians, organizations, and individuals doing all that they can to get the Obama seal of approval. This couple can go anywhere and do anything that they wish and be welcomed. All of their deliberate and strategic investments in young people here and abroad will bear fruit that will change the world. Those who tried to pull them down, to sully their light with their jealous darkness will be consigned to the dustbin of history; their lives and actions a cautionary tale.

But already posted it to my FB page:-) Needed this to counter my horror at the news that Flynn was in close contact with the Russian ambassador on the day PBO announced sanctions against Russia. What we are seeing from this incoming administration is bordering on treasonous. And contrary to DT who has not yet taken any oath, as a retired military officer Flynn has taken that oath. He should be investigated for his actions.

I can never give up because POTUS never gives up. His words to the former mayor Minneapolis on Facebook yesterday were very wonderful. I will see if I can get that posted here later today. He says we’ve got this, and while I cannot see how from where I stand, I trust him and I am yanking my eyes back to the White House every single remaining day, of which there are 8 days. It is about race, and wishing that it were not the case has no power and only pushes us away from solutions. His goodness and strength and brilliant strong response to the ugliness shows who they are and what they want and why we are stuck. I believe that his goodness and genius responses to the ongoing assaults of dishonesty and destructive behavior have made it easier for a lot of people who didn’t see it or believe it before, to see it and believe it. And seeing and believing means more energy to get in there and make these wrongs right. Looking forward to POTUS’s next moves and inspiration after he and his have had a nice little break and a chance to settle in to being free of the burdens they have born for all of us.
CEB, I agree that a good share of it was flat out prejudice. I was a field director in TX for the 2008 campaign and believe me, we were horrified and at times terrified. BUT there is also a group in this country that simply hates those who have done well, whether white, black or any color in between. I know some of those people from other places, and they despise me simply for my education and having succeeded in a field that will never be open to them. This is the group that refers to Dems as coastal elites, although many of us are not from nor have ever lived on any coast. I am a born and bred midwesterner, but it doesn’t matter. The GOP has done a great job of mocking those who attain education in this country. Of course, there is a ton of hypocrisy here. The party supposedly that endorses personal responsibility for most of us thinks these folks should be handed a factory job after high school that pays $25/hour and benefits-for life. In addition to the cultural changes, they are terrified and feel left behind by the technological changes and the educational requirements that those changes demand. We must recognize this going forward.
CEB, as an old white woman (although I don’t feel it) who hears what other old white women say, I would agree you are exactly right. The Obamas shattered every stereotype they had of African Americans, and they could not handle it. Deny, deny, deny…..project, project, project.
Their armor was not penetrable. They could not deal with the cognitive dissonance, so they closed their hearts and minds. Not rational, not reasonable, total blind ingrained prejudice.
I have often thought of you surrounded by such people and how you have managed to stay true and open and loving. I know that some around you would consider you and the others in out TOD family as “race traitors” for your love and support of PBO and that you would be in danger from some. Thank you for showing that not everyone is alike on the inside no matter how they may appear on the outside. My acknowledgement of racism is always seasoned with the knowledge that we have moved forward even as much as we have because of people like you from our earliest days on this continent to the present.
Thank you. Fortunately, I am not alone here. I have spoken often of my church and our minister. He sets an example for those of us who eschew bigotry and hatred, and embrace all. He is so strong, and loving and reasonable. The Sunday after the election the sanctuary was packed. We were all distraught…..many were angry. He preached a masterpiece of a sermon….comforting, prodding, encouraging, directing…..telling us that in this time we have a duty to resist, and giving us concrete ways to do just that.
I will be at our state capitol January 21 with the other women from my church and hundreds of women from all over the state for the Women March for Oklahoma to stand up to Trump and Ryan and McConnell. Long ago I learned that hatred hurts the hater. That is a burden I don’t want to carry. PBO learned this also, which is why he is the example for all of us. He continues to confound the haters.
At the end of our service, the benedictory prayer always ends with “…and love one another - every single other.” Eventually that prayer gets inside the soul and heart.

Nerdy, not sure what would be doing with you and this place at the moment. It feels like there is this tragedy looming over all of us. At least today I am functioning after my anger yesterday. I did not know that I could be so angry with a political party. But then, I never thought we would see a political as cruel as the GOP in America.
I know that it is hard, but do not give them this victory as well. The deplorable ones wanted to hurt those of us who love and support the Obamas even more than they wanted to hurt them. We, with our votes, activisim, love and devotion propelled them to the white house and they want us to pay for it. Continue to hold your head up high and use your anger in the ways that PBO would have us. Do not give them your anger and fear this is the meat that they gorge on. My biggest anger is based on my disappointment that the 62 million who voted for this care-for-no-one buffoon showed that this country is less far along than I thought. That people who I see everyday could do this to the world and they will find, to themselves as well has been a hurtful thing that I have been working my way around and through since election night. Some days are better than others, but I have not felt that deep despair that I felt the first few days. Knowledge is a good thing, especially when it is hard news, but it is better to know exactly where you stand. I see this country even more clearly that I did before and I have resolved how to deal with it, not with bitterness and anger because that only hurts me, but with courage, living my life out loud and well. My ancestors lived through times much more perilous than this and I owe it to them, myself, and to future generations to take their gift of survival to live the best life that I can.

Like you CEB I have not felt the despair since shortly after the election. But at some level, I want to believe this country is better than it is. Funny, I at least can understand the prejudice and the fears of change. But the pure revenge of the GOP is beyond my comprehension. I simply have never seen any one, much less an entire party, so motivated by revenge.
It is what it is, I will have to accept it, and will use my anger constructively.

The head of the D.C. National Guard, Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz, said Friday that he has been ordered removed from his command effective Jan. 20, 12:01 p.m., just as Donald Trump is sworn in as president.
Schwartz’s forced departure will come in the midst of the presidential inauguration that he has spent months helping plan alongside D.C. police, the U.S. Secret Service and other top District officials. He will turn over command to an interim as power transfers from one president to the next, and just before the inaugural parade marches down Pennsylvania Avenue.
“The timing is extremely unusual,” Schwartz said in an interview Friday morning, confirming a memo announcing his ouster that was obtained by The Washington Post. During the inauguration, Schwartz would command not only the members of the D.C. guard but also an additional 5,000 unarmed troops sent in from across the country to help. He also would oversee military air support protecting the nation’s capital during the inauguration.
“My troops will be on the street,” Schwartz, 65, said. “I’ll see them off but I won’t be able to welcome them back to the armory.” He said that he would “never plan to leave a mission in the middle of a battle.”
Schwartz said he would oversee duties in a command center and then depart at 12:01 p.m., retiring from the Army.
Schwartz said that he has been swamped with inauguration duties and packing up four decades’ worth of papers and accumulated items, and has not yet been able to inform District officials, including the mayor and the chair of the D.C. Council. Unlike in states, where the governor appoints the National Guard commander, in the District that duty falls to the president.

Africa, it is your shirt and entirely up to you. But it looks to me like one of his early photos, much younger looking than currently? Personally, I prefer the later photos of him, he EARNED every one of those grey hairs, lines and furrows fighting for us and keeping us safe. They serve as a reminder to me of just how much he and his lovely family have sacrificed for us. And I think he is even more handsome for them. But again, it is your shirt!

Sharing a story: This morning, Stephanie Miller Show. Some of the callers ranged from people in tears/great distress because the caller or someone in family uses and needs ACA. One of those was a young mom who has a disabled daughter. She was distraught and talked about her she is terrified, literally terrified about her future, her daughter’s future and our future as a country. It was heart-wrenching listening to her. Was tough for Stephanie and her crew trying to reassure her (and all the callers) because they all feel the same way. Another (lesbian) mom called with her story: The day after the election, their 6 yr-old son asked if they needed to find a man to come live with them to take care of them. They reassured him as best they could. Then yesterday, they all watched the Biden ceremony. Afterwards, they explained to him about respect. That is how real men respect other men and how men respect women-daughters, sisters, wives. They told him that, yes, he won’t be seeing much or any of that respect on TV for the next few years, but that he must always understand how important respect for everyone is. Then all of them talked about “What DO we tell our children?” “How do we explain all this to them?”
Stephanie’s show this morning was as emotional as I’ve ever heard and it was from the callers. Oh, forgot. The one young mom asked “Where is my place in our country now?” Just heart-wrenching and terrifying. I just have no words………….terrified, worried, sick, frustrated, disbelief, so many questions. Sigh……………:(
That kind of fear is reality based. Only thing for people to do is band together, connect with others who share your values.

Did Cory Booker and a bunch of other Democratic senators just vote against importing prescription drugs from Canada? No. No, they didn’t. Here is what they voted against:

What they voted against was the above amendment to the Budget reconciliation bill. The Budget reconciliation bill is not a normal bill because it never becomes law. It never goes to the president for signature or veto. What it does is set out the framework for spending money that the committee chairs must work with when legislating and appropriating.
The Klobuchar/Sanders amendment would have given Senator Mike Enzi of Wyoming, the chairman of the Budget Committee, the discretion to pass a bill on the importation of prescription drugs or other means of lowering the price for American consumers, even if that required him to adjust how monies were allocated to his subcommittees.
For starters, Sen. Enzi voted against giving himself this discretion, so he clearly had no intention of taking advantage of it. In truth, though, this amendment was just one of several amendments the Democrats introduced to cause political pain to the Republicans. None of them would have actually become law, but all of them could be used to attack anyone who voted against them.
To see how this was supposed to work, all you have to do is look at an article that was produced by the Center for American Progress yesterday. They highlighted “6 essential health benefits” the GOP had voted to take away during their Wednesday night/Thursday morning vote-a-rama. None of those health benefits included the Klobuchar/Sanders amendment on prescription drugs, but they were all poison pill/message amendments intended to embarrass and wound any senators who voted against them. One was on protecting people with pre-existing conditions, another was on letting young adults stay on their parents’ health plan until they’re twenty six, and another was on protecting children on Medicaid or CHIP. None of the amendments meant a damn thing. None of them had the least potential to change the law of the land. But they gave the Democrats the opportunity to blast the (mostly) Republicans who voted against them. The Center of American Progress article was the main instrument for that bludgeoning.
They are going to come for him like they are coming for the man who spelled out how DT was not divesting himself and what he needed to do. The good news is that Rep. Lewis is a warrior for justice and he is more than ready (I daresay he relishes it) for the mofos who will try to come for him. And if they try to f**k with him, there will be a mighty upheaval. If the rest of the dems had half the courage of JL, there would not be such fear across the land.
What CEB said times infinity. Somebody smart tweeted after his testimony on the Klanster Sessions, that if you are on any side other than the side John Lewis is on in life, you are in the wrong place. Said better than that, but it is pure truth. Saw this called a “bombshell” in a headline on twitter. Rep. Lewis did not drop a bombshell. He stated a simple fact. Trump is absolutely not a legitimate president. He isn’t. And someone else on twitter just made the connection that a certain nasty man spent years and years and has never withdrawn his accusations that our greatest POTUS ever was not legit — that’s rich for them to be all hurt and mad. I’m here for the Mighty Upheaval, CEB. May Dems see Rep.Lewis and follow his lead always.

This is the reason I now give to other social justice organizations (like the SPLC) instead of the ACLU. All of this effort in support of a traitor. If Snowy had been s simple whistle-blower who had gone to a respected US news agency (if there are any left) with his findings, I would not have so much trouble with this. Instead, with impure motives, he took whatever he had to our two largest enemies and gave them information that endangered countless others and compromised our intelligence community. Furthermore, after being in Russia so long he is so tainted that he should never be allowed back in to the country that he hurt.
I have actually wondered if Russia has pressured Snowden into more traitor type computer actions since being there?

Sue, you are such an important voice for all the things President Obama has worked and fought for. I certainly agree that turning off the news for a while, staying away from divisive people, caring for ourselves as the injured innocents we are- all that is good and necessary. I know President Obama would put his arms around you, as would FLOTUS, to make sure you know you are heard and valued. Just guessing, but I think PBO has plans for the future, and that we’ll be a part of that.
