British engineering giant Rolls-Royce will pay £671m to settle corruption cases with UK and US authorities.

The UK’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) found conspiracy to corrupt or failure to prevent bribery by Rolls-Royce in China, India and other markets.

The firm apologised “unreservedly” for the cases spanning nearly 25 years.

A UK court ruled the aerospace firm would pay £497m plus costs to the SFO, which conducted its biggest ever investigation into the firm.

The SFO revealed 12 counts of conspiracy to corrupt or failure to prevent bribery in seven countries - Indonesia, Thailand, India, Russia, Nigeria, China and Malaysia.

Rolls-Royce said it would also pay $170m (£141m) to the US Justice Department, and a further $26m (£21.5m) to Brazilian regulators.

The 2016 election was between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump; their names were on the ballot, not Barack Obama’s. So tired of all of these articles and interviewers who are blaming PBO for Hillary’s loss. Until the end they are unfair to him, placing their disappointment at his feet. This theme is in all of the interviews that were aired this past Sunday. I have sampled all of them and finally stopped watching. PBO won both of his elections with a clear mandate. In the face of great opposition he succeeded in so more areas than any other in recent history. Any so-called failures of his can be laid at the feet of an obstructive GOP, feckless Democrats, and a lazy electorate that kept sending Republicans to State Houses. If a white, male Republican president had accomplished only one of PBO’s landmark victories, they would be singing his praises forever and defending him against any criticism. So tired of these people who expect perfection, a unicorn, and a bag of gold at the end of the rainbow from the A-A president. Rant over.

Spoke to my daughter living in Germany today on Skype. I am home from her wedding and she is back from her honeymoon. Her husband is from a three generation family that has worked for BMW. So there was a comment about DJT’s tweet about BMW. She said there is a complete change in attitude from Europeans in regards to Americans living in Europe now with the onset of the new President. I also witnessed it from taxi drivers and hotel workers when I was there a couple weeks ago. Many fearful questions about DJT. My group overwhelmingly expressed our own disdain about his presidency. The entire world is fearful (well maybe not Russia). Although while in Munich four in our group were in the lobby when we met a lady from Russia that taught English to Africans in Russia. One of our members asked her her opinion on Putin and she made a face and said she was not favorable towards him. We said we were not favorable towards Trump either. Then she said she really liked our President Obama and especially his wife, Michelle.
I mentioned to my daughter that on one of my trips to Italy my Sister-in-Law and I were in a pension in the center of Florence. GW had just started his war in Iraq and we had to walk through protests against America each evening to get back to our pension. I also mentioned that on other trips my AK travel group would claim we were from AK and downplay the US part. My daughter replied that that did not work any more since people heard about Sarah Palin.

As do I. Even things like R’s being so insistent on letting “the people speak” and the new president choose the SC nominee. NOTHING will convince me that all of them didn’t know what the outcome was going to be. That points right back to the voting machines. It was too close in those battleground states. They all knew exactly how many votes he needed in all those states and they made it happen. Even tonight, reading on local pages and FB posts about how Lamar Alexander has handled the DeVos hearing today. They have planned to perfection how to get all these nominees through. The aim: to dismantle our government and have all the power and all the $$$$$$$$$.

Indeed! The same way trump got elected is how some republicans got elected or re-elected. However the current narrative is for the “common good” of all, at least that is why I think many who know the truth of the matter are keeping silent. Rep John Lewis knows this also but the man has been through too much for the freedoms of the nation to believe the “common good” excuse. He has probably heard that argument before too and just simply could not support what he knows was clearly fraudulent!

I’ve got a question about twitter. What if we’ve sent a tweet to the Obamas or their administration in the past? For instance, if I had tweeted “@potus, you’re the best!” After January 20, if somebody was browsing my tweets and saw that, if they then clicked on the “@potus” in my tweet, would it default to “@potus44” and show that I was referring to PBO, instead of the illegitimate peeotus? I would be horrified if anybody misconstrued a tweet of mine to think that I was showing support of any kind for DJT.

    • 109 jacquelineoboomer
      January 18, 2025 at 12:37 am

Of course, as a matter of protocol, all previous presidents would be invited, not that this is a normal time. I personally think they decided to attend to show strength on Hillary’s part (if she didn’t attend, it could be said by Trump that she was crushed, weak, poor loser, etc., etc.). Also, not to be too unkind, Bill doesn’t like to miss a chance to be seen as previous Prez, in the lineup, in front of the whole world.

On a personal note … although Trump has no emotions - at least detectable by humans - the rest of us can see it as a poke in his eye by Hillary. As in her saying I won the popular vote, everybody knows it, I’m not going away, and everybody here remembers the nasty things you said about me, not that you care, but they didn’t like it. That poke in the eye. Probably cathartic on that point alone for her.

It’ll all be over in a flash and none of this will matter. I’m waiting to see the real POTUS and FLOTUS arrive on the platform, be seated, and then I will turn off the “show.”

By this time in 2008, the big names from the haute couture world were queuing up outside the White House for the privilege of showcasing their creations on the most charismatic and stylish of First Ladies, wife of America’s first black President.

Here’s a little noticed curiosity (among the many oddities) of the current presidential transition process.

The incoming First Lady is a former model who has retained all the glamour of the ramp.

But on the subject of who’s offering their sartorial services to the wife of a billionaire who will represent the United States for at least the next four years there is radio silence.

That became noticeable only because one designer has come out with an emphatic declaration of intent, and a negative one at that — Sophie Thealet, owner of an immigrant-origin family firm that occasionally provided clothes for Michelle Obama.

In an open letter on November 17, she declared, To Whom it May Concern, that she would not ‘participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next First Lady.’

This was, Ms Thealet wrote, on account of the racism, sexism and xenophobia of Melania Trump’s husband’s campaign, which were incompatible with the values of her company.

    //

During her time in the White House, Michelle Obama took to another level the trend set by Jacqueline Kennedy of enabling the fashion industry to subtly monetise the sartorial choices of the First Lady.

Ms Kennedy stuck to the conventional — Dior, Chanel — but her well-groomed look launched a thousand imitators.

Ms Obama’s patronage of a range of edgy young designers brought excitement and flair to the First Lady’s wardrobe.

She created a style uniquely her own, limiting her fashion advice to Ikram Goldman and her trendy boutique in Chicago and, later, to Meredith Koop, an Ikram employee.

But implicit in her choices were social and political statements too.

Names like Bibhu Mahapatra, Jason Wu, Prabal GurungNaeem Khan, Joseph Altuzarra and the many other couturiers who span the race, gender and LGBT spectrum in rainbow profusion suddenly found support from the Executive Residence of the White House.

Ms Obama, vital and fit, was effortlessly able to carry off bold colours, ditzy patterns and unconventional cuts.

    Good morning, good friends.

This is a very special photo. I can’t imagine the special bond these two have formed over the years. It’s been a tremendously beautiful partnership.

For eight years, my boss has referred to me, I think with reverence, as the Azorean. Both sets of my grandparents were born in the Azores, Portuguese islands in the mid Atlantic. I think he thought it was cool since he had never met anyone from the Azores. Then it turns out that his political director in the second term, David Simas, and his Energy Secretary, Ernie Moniz, also had Azores roots. So it became even cooler that I was Azorean. This past November, it just so happened that Air Force One was refueling in the Azores as we traveled from Greece to Peru. The President, who usually doesn't disembark from the plane during refueling stops, told the Secret Service he was going to get off the plane to "take a picture with Pete." And then, because of the beautiful setting, we walked around the tarmac for 90 minutes. Thanks to my colleague Chuck Kennedy for snapping this photo. Disclosure: the wind was blowing my shirt open.

And I can’t get enough of this moment:

Today, the President and First Lady joined Americans across the country in a day of service to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Naylor Road Family Shelter – the new home of “Malia and Sasha's Castle,” the playset which sat outside the Oval Office for eight years.

Morning everyone:) The rest of the country is finally figuring out what we have known and appreciated for 8 extraordinary years:)

    http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/18/politics/obama-approval-rating-cnn-orc-poll/index.html

Washington (CNN)President Barack Obama will leave office Friday with his highest approval rating since 2009, his presidency largely viewed as a success, and a majority saying they will miss him when he is gone.

A new CNN/ORC poll finds Obama’s approval rating stands at 60%, his best mark since June of his first year in office. Compared with other outgoing presidents, Obama lands near the top of the list, outranked only by Bill Clinton’s 66% in January 2001 and Ronald Reagan’s 64% in January 1989. About two-thirds (65%) say Obama’s presidency was a success, including about half (49%) who say that was due to Obama’s personal strengths rather than circumstances outside his control.
    The complete CNN/ORC poll results
Amid those glowing reviews, one-quarter of Americans (25%) say Obama is one of the nation’s greatest presidents, far outpacing the share who felt that way about other recent presidents as their terms ended (11% described Reagan that way, 10% Clinton, and 5% or fewer said so about either President Bush). Still, nearly as many (23%) call Obama a poor president, more than said so about Reagan, Clinton or the first president Bush, but well below the 46% who said George W. Bush was a poor president as he prepared to leave the White House.

If they say 60%, it’s probably more like 80%…. I don’t care. It’s always been 110% for me. Damn it. I will miss him.

By the way, I got a great night’s sleep last night because I took “Mother’s Little Helper”….that would be ZZZZQuil:) Liquid Benedryl. Non habit forming, tnmtngirl:) Try it! I can’t go 2 nights in a row with no sleep. So, if one night I’m rocking and rollin’….the next night I do a shooter:) Out like a light:)

Another thought: For those of you worried about unfollowing the REAL POTUS (44) in time so as not to follow the FRAUD….Really????? You WILL know which one is which! 44 writings make sense. The other one writes like an incoherent 2nd grader, and praises himself for everything. You WILL KNOW!
