Mueller deserves not to have his hard work mangled by a press that doesn’t get it
It's so depressing to realize how badly the media will screw up the Mueller Report release tomorrow. Advice for everyone talking about it: Go slow, be careful, use precise language, don't rush to speak. It's a big document and Mueller's team surely chose their words carefully.

In a lawless administration rife with criminality, Barr has destroyed any boundary between DOJ and the WH and is performing as handmaiden to Trump, completely unaccountable to the American people. Another blow to democracy and to the rule of law.
“According to a report from the New York Times on Wednesday,
some findings in Mueller’s final report “will not be news to President Trump,” because the White House and DOJ have already had
“numerous conversations” on Mueller’s conclusions. As a result, the president’s legal team has been able to get out in front of the Mueller report – which is expected to be damning – and craft a rebuttal.”
https://www.politicususa.com/2019/04/17/bill-barr-has-been-feeding-trump-info-on-the-mueller-report-to-help-with-his-rebuttal.html
From the NYT report:
“Justice Department officials have had numerous conversations with White House lawyers about the conclusions made by Mr. Mueller, the special counsel, in recent days, according to people with knowledge of the discussions. The talks have aided the president’s legal team as it prepares a rebuttal to the report and strategizes for the coming public war over its findings.
A sense of paranoia is taking hold among some of Mr. Trump’s aides, some of whom fear his backlash more than the findings themselves, the people said. The report might make clear which of Mr. Trump’s current and former advisers spoke to the special counsel, how much they said and how much damage they did to the president — providing a kind of road map for retaliation.
The discussions between Justice Department officials and White House lawyers have also added to questions about the propriety of the decisions by Attorney General William P. Barr since he received Mr. Mueller’s findings late last month.”
“In an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, American Constitution Society President Caroline Fredrickson said it looks like Trump
and the DOJ are “coordinating” in “another act of obstruction.”

Just been informed by DOJ that we’ll receive Mueller’s report only after Barr gives a press conference.
Once again, Barr wants to shape the public’s perception of the report.
This is on top of reports DOJ secretly briefed the White House.
This is not justice. Just PR.
— Adam Schiff (@RepAdamSchiff) April 17, 2025
Dear @eliehonig, so 'taking control of the public narrative' is ok with you when the only narrative that actually matters are the words #RobertMueller & his team wrote.
We know what Barr's record is on 'taking control of the narrative' - in 1989 he totally distorted the tuth.
— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) April 18, 2025
Dear Chuck Rosenberg, @ChuckRsVoice, the 'new' Barr is no different from the 'old' Barr as anyone knows who paid attention to what he did in 1989 and 1992.
He interviewed to be Trump's #JohnMitchell and he's doing a remarkable job emulating him. #RuleOfLaw is in grave danger.
AG Barr has thrown out his credibility & the DOJ’s independence with his single-minded effort to protect @realDonaldTrump above all else. The American people deserve the truth, not a sanitized version of the Mueller Report approved by the Trump Admin. https://t.co/fgXwiLuQfr
And this is why I will not be supporting Sanders in the Maryland primary.
“26% of current Bernie Sanders supporters said that they would rather vote for President Donald Trump over Senator Elizabeth Warren, if that were the eventual 2020 matchup” — @Forbes
3 things to remember when #Barr holds his press conference: 1. Special Counsel’s Office still has an open grand jury; 2. 20 open investigations result from #MuellerProbe are on-going; Congress is issuing subpoenas. #ThisIsntOver today.
Funny that there are other countries trying valiantly to save our democracy and the rules of law…. but it’s not OURS!
This is a YUGE deal. Australia NEVER releases diplomatic cables. Not even redacted ones. And Australia has done it hours before the Barr dog and pony show. 🇦🇺
As the #Country waits for the #MuellerReport, know this…it does not matter how #Barr #RedactedMuellerReport. @MichaelCohen212 has 7 days, 70 hours, + 100 pages of what #TeamMueller knows and can fill in the bulk of the redactions. Nice try Mr. @POTUS. #Truth We will tell it all
So take today for what it is: Bill Barr’s last-ditch effort to salvage Trump’s presidency. He is not releasing the full Mueller Report, but rather his censored version of what he claims to have read. Jerry Nadler and the Democrats know this and although they aren’t going all-in like some of our hair-on-fire lefties would like, their slow, methodical long game is the correct play in this situation. After today, there is more Mueller Report to see and Jerry Nadler, Adam Schiff, Maxine Waters, Elijah Cummings, Rich E. Neal, and Nancy Smash Pelosi will be damn sure the American people see it.
It's (redacted) clear that President Trump is (redacted) exonerated in … https://t.co/st5w5G8B3o
Chairman Nadler has sent Mr. Mueller a letter calling him to testify before May 23.

The problem with Barr’s claim that Trump ‘fully cooperated’ with Mueller investigation:
“Despite Barr’s claims this week, Trump notably took numerous steps throughout the duration of Mueller’s investigation to avoid ever being interviewed face-to-face by the special counsel’s team. Multiple reports pegged his reluctance to the fact that Trump’s lawyers were afraid the president would perjure himself in the process.”

“Throughout the astounding press conference,
Barr absolutely confirmed that he is not the attorney general of the United States, but Donald Trump’s lead defense counsel.
Some points:
1) Barr’s “frustration” defense of Trump’s actions was made on an apparent evaluation of “sincere belief,” a legal term related to state of mind, though Trump never testified to the special counsel. It seems likely this is Barr’s evaluation, not Mueller’s.
2) Barr quite clearly recognized the weakness of this argument, growing angry when a reporter asked about it and almost immediately leaving the stage.
3) The way in which Barr brought up and hurried past his statement on WikiLeaks would seem to indicate that there are some serious allegations in this section of the report that do not look good for Trump or his campaign.
4) The statement that Barr will make available to congressional leaders a version of the report from which all redactions are removed except those related to grand jury testimony was perhaps the only thing that might count as news that appeared during the press conference. Though that testimony clearly forms a critical part of the report.
5) All of Barr’s statements about Mueller, despite his casual use of “Bob,” indicate that he has not spoken to Mueller directly since the release of his letter to Congress.”
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/4/18/1851234/-Barr-press-conference-confirmed-that-is-Trump-s-defense-attorney-not-the-AG-of-the-United-States
Barr’s absurd ‘frustration defense’:
“Was it when Trump fired FBI director James Comey? How about when Trump attempted to get then attorney general Jefferson Sessions to unredact himself so he could end the investigation? Threatening Rod Rosenstein? Trying to get the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York replaced? Authoring a letter from Air Force One that provided Donald Trump Jr. with a false alibi for having a meeting with Russian operatives in Trump Tower? How many such events would it have taken before Trump could be held accountable? Barr gave Trump ten free swings, but would eleven have been out of the question? A hundred? A thousand? Barr gives no limits, but it’s clear that the real limits are always somewhere on the other side of whatever action Trump takes. The power of frustration gives Trump authority over law. This theory isn’t just ridiculous, Barr knows it is ridiculous.”

Trump's campaign chairman handed a former KGB agent internal polling data including important data about the battleground states Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, which provided the extremely narrow electoral college win for Trump.
Manafort discussed specific battleground states with Kilimnik, including Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, all of which resulted in the unlikely election of Donald Trump.
Wasn’t prepared to acknowledge this as soundly, but MSNBC - even in a commercial-free several hours - is giving great coverage to the Mueller Report.
I’m sure now that trump will go down.
Even some of the legal types on MSNBC seem to be getting a bit emotional. Personally, I feel like crying for our democracy. But luckily SO MANY REAL AMERICANS are stepping up and meeting this awful challenge, head on.
Whopper Club on parade.
Barr unilaterally decided to break the longstanding protocol of Attorney General independence from the President. And how!
So now apprehend the both of them. Upside: 1) They can keep each other company. 2) Trump can even get time off to visit The Hague.
All good.
All right. I just finished the Mueller Report. I'm going to combine the most shocking and important revelations in one thread. Long and short: there was collusion, there was obstruction, Donald Trump needs to be removed from office. Immediately. 1/
Thank you for so thoroughly and thoughtfully summarizing the redacted report. You've always been a trusted source for honest reflections on Trump's attitudes and behavior since the very beginning. And you are in this moment SPOT ON.
Julia Ainsley of NBC News reported,
“The special counsel did consult the office of legal counsel opinion that you cannot indict a sitting president. That counters what William Barr said earlier today that that was not taken into consideration. The special counsel said in a traditional investigation, we would not have to think about the fact that we’re talking about the president of the United States. This changes that.” (politicus.usa)

I don’t want to lower the name of Barack Obama by actually voting, but this is kinda funny because my first reply in my head before seeing the list was “Barack Obama” !
Erivo!
FYI ….
Though 5 Congressional Dem Chairs have demanded Barr not hold a press conference prior to release of HIS report - which, of course, likely has little substantive resemblance to the Mueller Team’s ….
‘… acting like house counsel to a crime boss …. ‘ is a perfect description of Barr …
Preet’s on it ….
And this is why I will not be supporting Sanders in the Maryland primary.
As a shock to no one on TOD:) I will share this though, so thanks. Mostly with the people I know IN the cult!
Morning everyone. Believe nothing but the full report.
Thread
Funny that there are other countries trying valiantly to save our democracy and the rules of law…. but it’s not OURS!
Keep in you with friends and family? What’s wrong with the phone???
Keep in touch. Did I type this? It’s early. Before coffee:)
🧐
What IF this Barr whitewash makes everyone come out of the woodwork to tell the truth??
INdeed!!
LIVE NOW: Beto O’Rourke campaigns in Derry, NH - https://abcnews.go.com/Live
Fitting. Most? I’m thinking not
From the essay..
Rothstein stands his ass up there like a fucking bump on a log, like fucking Sargent Schultz he don’t know nothing and wasn’t seen nothing.
Took me forever to download this thing. It’s 139MB 448 pages pdf UNCOMPRESSED.
WOW…and this does not include the underlying evidence and Grand Jury documents
Chairman Nadler has sent Mr. Mueller a letter calling him to testify before May 23.
Nadler’s letter here: https://www.politicususa.com/2019/04/18/mueller-called-to-testify-before-house-judiciary-before-may-23.html

-Barr wants you to wear that blindfold Trump gave you.
This thing has ALL the juice.
The redactions are very telling.

You have got to see this. Trump is bald. His dementia must’ve been really bad that day because he doesn’t realize he doesn’t have his wig on. This is the image that should be used by every Democrat along with the video of the woman who Trump had come on stage and run her hands thru his hair pretending that his wig was not a wig. https://twitter.com/TomthunkitsMind/status/1118651688754339840
All good.
Both sound good to me!
Very good thread here:
Julia Ainsley of NBC News reported,
“The special counsel did consult the office of legal counsel opinion that you cannot indict a sitting president. That counters what William Barr said earlier today that that was not taken into consideration. The special counsel said in a traditional investigation, we would not have to think about the fact that we’re talking about the president of the United States. This changes that.” (politicus.usa)
