I admit being a bit uncomfortable with this. The President who made “torture” an official policy of the USA being invited by President Obama to attend the funeral of Mr. Mandela ? I’m for peace and reconciliation and all, but was it really necessary?
Or is it that President Obama wanted to invite the Clintons, so he had no choice to invited the Bushes too ?
I have reason to believe that PBO extended a general and broad invitation to all former living US Presidents and their spouses as a courtesy. Mark Knoller in his agenda-driven reporting, made it seem like PBO singled out individuals to invite.
Roberta, our president actually lives the kind of life Nelson Mandela urged us all to live. I don’t think he’s capable of holding a grudge against anyone, even GWB.
LOL! Don’t be embarrassed! I too also started watching the 2012 show not realizing it was from last year, and when Babyface started singing I realized that he had sung last year and was not listed for this year - that’s when I realized that I was looking at the wrong link.
Now they have part of the youtube video blocking the current livestream. (why - I don’t know…).
Can’t believe it. I can get the stream! Yeah!
So here’s my dilemna — stay here in the office and watch or leave and get home a little earlier than usual.
I am really on my last Nerve with showboating WJC.
Over at Mediabistro.com/tvnewers, they are reporting that WJC will with BrianW, ABC GeorgeS, CBS BobS and Ed Henry on Mandela? Why?
Now that GWBush and his Laura are going to the Madiba’s Funeral are WJC and RHC? What about Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosaline? GH Bush isn’t going probably for his age.
Let Us brace ourselves for whatever nonsense that would come out of WJC’s mouth this Sunday. Sheesh.
Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, along with former First Lady Laura Bush, will attend former South African President Nelson Mandela’s funeral, according to reports from Reuters and CNN.
Reuters’ Steve Holland tweets that the Bushes will accompany President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle on Air Force One.
I like that they’re showing their respect to Nelson Mandela by attending the funeral. Bill and GW have their faults, but they can honor and respect an exemplary leader when they see one.
Chips, you and your team-UT, LP, LL-have done a magnificent job in the last 30 or so hours, presenting tributes, retrospectives, messages from the heart and every thing we all needed, especially a loving community, to take us through a tough time. These times when we all come together in a great outpouring of love and mutual support are what makes the site you created truly the best there is. Can’t thank you enough for doing this.
Oh Jackie, thank you so much for that, you’re lovely, really appreciate it. The blog tyrants excelled, so moved by LL’s piece today and LP’s wonderful photo tribute. So grateful to them. And, as usual, UT keeps the whole place going with her majestic contributions! Thanks again Jackie.
57, what a lovely thing to say, so so so so appreciated, the place wouldn’t be anything without the blog tyrants and people just like you who contribute every day. HUGE HUGS!
Yes indeed, JackieG! I agree 100% with every thing you said and thank you for saying it so well. Chips and her team (LP, UT, LL) have been magnificent! And so have many other TOD posters, and especially Dudette, who have shared Mandela quotes, pics, video-clips, and musical tributes. The Obama Diary is truly a very special place. I’ve also been touched by many of the personal and beautiful tributes and remembrances shared in the comments.
My beloved older brother passed away December 5, 2000. I miss him every single day. We were extraordinarily close, on the phone talking politics and whatnot 10 times/day.
My one solace that horrible year was that he didn’t have to see George W. Bush installed as President. Our last conversation, he said that if he won the recount he would have to govern from the center because he lost the popular vote. Ha!
Hi tnmtngirl, the YouTube live streaming should be starting now, when you go here http://thenationaltree.org/2013-national-tree-lighting-show/ make sure you’re watching the pop-up window, not the 2012 video on the page - like I did!
You made the same mistake Chips and I did, looking at the 2012 show - it’s the link above the youtube video that’s for this year. Or you can wait for the white house link above, which is supposed to begin livestream anytime soon. The show will be televised on PBS at a later date in December so check your local listings.
You’re NOT goofy Dotster, it lasted about three seconds! You can see the concert at the other link, http://thenationaltree.org/2013-national-tree-lighting-show/
Oh we got Mariah-hate goin’ on too? With Billy Joel, I guess that’s some gender equal hatin’!
Can we have a list of banned artists please? I’m having trouble keeping up. :-)
But if you go directly to the twitter page, you might want to avoid the words of the “good pastor asshole” that appear below this tweet. Unbelievable what people who call themselves Christians will do in the public sphere.
The @ClintonFdn remains committed to furthering Madiba's work. Gifts will go to the @NelsonMandela Foundation. http://t.co/h3FtcB08u0
No way!
Way! LOL! :)
Yes way!!! Helloooooo Gazelle!
Hellooooo Mama Danny! How’s your precious rascal? Are your shoes sporting that Haute Couture look yet?! ;)
Will they be dining together on the plane Mark ?
I am sure our President made the offer to every living President ……
Isn’t that nice of our POTUS.
I admit being a bit uncomfortable with this. The President who made “torture” an official policy of the USA being invited by President Obama to attend the funeral of Mr. Mandela ? I’m for peace and reconciliation and all, but was it really necessary?

So glad we get to vicariously enjoy the best of the season with the Obamas as well as support each other during the rough times
So true Judith, we need this tonight.
We have a classy President. That would make me choke. GWB couldn’t go by himself, he would have been arrested, now he will have protection. ICK.
Roberta, our president actually lives the kind of life Nelson Mandela urged us all to live. I don’t think he’s capable of holding a grudge against anyone, even GWB.
This is so true. He really embodies compassion and forgiveness.
The dc weather is wet/rainy but not too cold, thankfully.
It’s started!
http://thenationaltree.org/2013-national-tree-lighting-show/
Yup, I’m watching the livestream now. :)
Did I mention that Mariah Carey is my female Billy Joel :???:
You think she is that good? Well, to each his or her own.
:(
How’d you get back in???
Evil snicker. There are ways known only to a few privileged people to get past any bannings. For a price, I am willing to share them.
‘For a price, I am willing to share them.’ Japa!!!!
Oh my….hopefully she will only sing one song. Heh!
That’ll be one TOO MANY!
Hmmm….Perhaps Mariah and Billy should do a Christmas duet - “We’re dreaming of a TOD Christmas!”
Oh? Is Billy performing tonight too? :-D
No, I’m just teasing Chips! :) :)
Hang in there Chips…I’m getting the EMS squad…
:) :)
I’ll be ready if they ever do a duet:
I’m not embarrassed, I was watching the wrong link ….. last year’s concert. Thought it all looked familiar
And I was thinking, what’s Hopefruit going on about, the weather looks fine!
Me, too. Does that mean we’ll be spared Mariah Carey?
:-) I think we’re still in severe danger of hearing Mariah, Meta, unless we stick with the 2012 concert.
Well, then we need a drinking game. Every time she strokes her hair, DRINK.
Okay, I’m all set!
LOLz!!
Can’t believe it. I can get the stream! Yeah!
So here’s my dilemna — stay here in the office and watch or leave and get home a little earlier than usual.
Ooooooh Dudette, that’s an impossible decision!!
I guess the nasty weather is not deterring some folks! Lotsa umbrellas, raincoats, plastics, etc. :)

I guess here’s my answer:

Chips - Everything that Jackie said and then some! Love you lots! Love your team of tyrants!
Aw, you bundle of hugginess, thank you Jacqueline!!!
Ha. :)
It’s quite an amazing team you have assembled. All that talent, heart and passion. But it’s the divine Ms. Chips that brings the symmetry.
Congratulations to all of you and my heartfelt thanks for everything you do.
57, what a lovely thing to say, so so so so appreciated, the place wouldn’t be anything without the blog tyrants and people just like you who contribute every day. HUGE HUGS!
Quite a brood you’ve assembled here, young lady.
“Young”
I love you, 57!
Hear, hear.

I am truly out of sync…I do not know many of the artists who will be performing…ohh myyy.. :-(
Know how you feel, PF.
hahaha…smh@me!
LOL! I’m not ashamed to say that the only thing making me watch this is the fact that PBO & First Family will be in attendance….
ditto….HF…in fact there are many things that not only did I not watch…I did not even KNOW existed…before PBO was in the WH..smilin
 I wish I didn’t know GWB existed, Prettyfoot!
I knowwwwwwwwww

True… And something tells me you and I are not the only two who’ve had this experience!
Ok, I’m confused. I am watching the streaming link that is posted. Is it 2012 or 1013. Is this not televised anywhere?????
Hi tnmtngirl, the YouTube live streaming should be starting now, when you go here http://thenationaltree.org/2013-national-tree-lighting-show/ make sure you’re watching the pop-up window, not the 2012 video on the page - like I did!

Cool - enjoy! :)
wow…Comcast…owner of MSNBC is a member of ALEC!!…explains much
Of course
The tree has a Twitter account. [Are you kidding me?]
Yay! There’s My First Family! :-)
I guess I’ll stay here at the office for a few minutes!
Whoa! That was fast! They counted down. The tree is lit and now they’re gone!
Aretha’s singing though. Guess I can stay a few more minutes! :-)
They usually stay for the entire show so that FLOTUS can read her story to the kids.
Ah!. So they’re maybe just getting out of the rain until time to come back on stage.
I think they’re still here - PBO is supposed to give remarks towards the end.
Aretha! Her voice!
Re-re still gots it!!!
Oh, my. Looks as though she’ll never lose it, either! Damn. What a voice.
Queen of Soul forevah! :-D
What??? Am I goofy? Don’t answer. But link went from “beginning shortly” to “just concluded”. How did I miss this? What did I miss?
http://thenationaltree.org/2013-national-tree-lighting-show/
thanks alycee!
Here’s another link showing the whole show :)
http://thenationaltree.org/
“What??? Am I goofy? Don’t answer.”
You’re NOT goofy Dotster, it lasted about three seconds! You can see the concert at the other link, http://thenationaltree.org/2013-national-tree-lighting-show/
Whew—-not goofy. Sorta smiling about that, just mad I missed the Obamas. At least I’m tuned in for Mariah Carey. :)
 Forward to 8:44 in this video and you’ll see it - but don’t blink!!
Do you think the Obamas will be sitting out there in the rain? I don’t think so.
You’re right!
OH!! Arturo Sandoval will be there!!
Yay! :-D
Malia seems now slightly taller than FLOTUS. Sasha is rapidly catching up… PBO might need to start wearing shoe heighteners… :) :)
Maybe the rain will stop Mariah’s microphone from working?
LMAO! You are baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad…..
Leave Mimi alone!!!! I know she’s your female Billy Joel, but she’s a fellow Obot, Chips. And it’s the holidays?! Come on! LOL
Okay itgurl, I’ll be good, promise.
Oh we got Mariah-hate goin’ on too? With Billy Joel, I guess that’s some gender equal hatin’!
Can we have a list of banned artists please? I’m having trouble keeping up. :-)
 Add Gloria Estefan!
Good thing you’re not around much for the late night music chats. :-!
I’ll have to stay up later to police them, Dudette!!
Love me some Janelle Monae!
It is really raining out there.
It’s po-in’!
How can they let their instruments get wet!
Gawd, I’m old!
Are these Arturo dudes trying to sing to the First Daughters? They better hope POTUS doesn’t sic the secret service on them, lol.
Edit: Oh, so that kid is named Prince Royce. My bad for getting his name wrong. But I think he was trying to sing to Sasha and Malia, lol.
I think the teeny-bopper crowd is his demographic.
Hey is that the VIP tent?
Well, I see now, that’s the tent for Artuoro’s band.
Ah, James Taylor! Just as good!
Hay there goes my Carolina guy James Taylor.
He’s mine, but I’ll share him with you. :-)
What? Nobody told me My Sweet Baby James would be there!!! [swooooooon!]
Okay, I’m really glad I stayed to watch! :-)
James Taylor!!! What a nice surpise :) :)
Look at My President just bobbin’ and noddin’ to the music. He’s so cool!
James Taylor?! I didn’t know he was performing. I think he may have sung for President Obama more than any other performer.
Looks like PBO’s remarks will be live here too:
Our First Lady is reading her Christmas story.
I wish someone would wipe off the camera lens!
Here comes FLOTUS!!!
First Lady is reading The Night Before Christmas :-)
She is reading the Night Before Christmas. Hay idiot Palin notice FLOTUS said Merry Christmas, she didn’t say Merry Holidays.
Oxymoron: Palin noticed!
What is wrong with WJC?
What a bizarre quote, bending over backwards??
gee, how effing poetic is THAT.
It makes Nelson Mandela sound like he was desperate for friends for South Africa, and would do anything to get them - good grief.
That is kind of odd.
The big dog’s horny mind is on sex 24/7. And it’s always ALL ABOUT BC, so his words automatically reflect this - no matter what he’s talking about.
You are sooooooooooo bad!
SMH — You DO have a point.
Of course Bubba! Yu kept him on a terrorist list…remember!!!!!!
I’m sorry, but it seems a very patronizing statement.
Someone put a muzzle on this old dog, please.
I’ll do it!!!!!! and I will throw in a chastity belt for free!
OMG, what a bizarre and insensitive thing to say. As if Mandela knew anything other than to be true.
Babyface!!!
WOW, he was here last year as well! What another nice surprise. :)
Yep!
Ifill of admiration Gwen!!
Ha ha! I just retweeted that! Was about to bring it over! GMTA! :-D
I do too gwen ifill. I do too.
Well, the only people they have not pissed off are fetuses!
I’m glad they are outside a GOPers office instead of fully blaming President Obama for Congressional inaction
Totally correct. The ACA is a moral choice to offer essential medical care to all Americans.
Woot!
Awesome Salsa!!
maravilloso!!!!!!!!
ARTURO!!!
I love Arturo. He is feisty!!! :)
Time to get up and dance! :-)
This is faaaaaaaantastic!!!
YAY Dr. Rad! :-D
Areeeeeeetha again!
Okay, so this is something.
But if you go directly to the twitter page, you might want to avoid the words of the “good pastor asshole” that appear below this tweet. Unbelievable what people who call themselves Christians will do in the public sphere.
