unlikeliest joint statement in the history of joint statements?

President Barack Obama with AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, August, 2010

Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka issued the following joint statement on President Obama’s State of the Union Address:

“America’s working families and business community stand united in applauding President Obama’s call to create jobs and grow our economy through investment in our nation’s infrastructure.

“Whether it is building roads, bridges, high-speed broadband, energy systems and schools, these projects not only create jobs and demand for businesses, they are an investment in building the modern infrastructure our country needs to compete in a global economy.

“With the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO standing together to support job creation, we hope that Democrats and Republicans in Congress will also join together to build America’s infrastructure.”

Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue

So true tigerfists. He never had to change my mind because I was behind him the first time I heard him speak. If we can only get the news out to those who don’t use internet and get the MSM to report these positive statements, he does have a chance to change peoples minds. You know, the “everyday walkin around” kind of people who aren’t interested in “politics.”

This is triangulation done correctly: not to beat down your own side, but to steal the other side’s thunder and support. As they say in golf, very well played.

I’m writing a LTE about this! Here in Middle GA, the republican rank and file hate unions with a passion. Every negative comment they make comes directly from the list of GOP, Pox, and rw radio talking points. I get so depressed sometimes with their failure to understand American history and the role that unions have played in getting them the benefits that they take for granted as they go to work each day. I’m hoping that my LTE will get some of them to realize that the relationship between business and unions can be a beneficial one for both parties.

Unions protect our most valuable resource….humans. When a business worships at the altar of the almighty dollar, human resources are at risk of being treated as little more than cogs in a machine. I worked for 27 years as a contract worker for a major airline….
the use and abuse of our workers was a constant tension, despite, by in large a very dedicated and hard working employee base. I didn’t start my career as a union advocate, but it didn’t take long to see the need for, and the value in, the benefits and the protections that the union negotiated/provided. Until responsible treatment and respect for all employees and not just those at executive levels is demonstrated, there is IMO a need for labor unions.
