Burma’s President Thein Sein has signed a law that will allow citizens of Burma, also known as Myanmar, to request permission to stage peaceful protests for the first time, BBC News reported. All protests were previously banned in Burma. This is the latest reform measure taken by Burma’s first civilian-elected government since the military junta handed over power earlier this year. According to the law, anyone planning a protest must request approval five days before the protest from the police, who can deny permission but must offer a reason for doing so, the Associated Press reported.

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton toured Burma earlier in the week. “It is a powerful endorsement for the government of Myanmar,” said Jim Della-Giacoma, the International Crisis Group’s Southeast Asia Project Director said to GlobalPost about Clinton’s visit. “It provides them with an opportunity to forge a new strategic relationship with the US,” he said. “But to really make this work, they’ll need to give up something in return.”

I walked across the border into Burma a few years ago and found it fascinating. It was not westernized at all, very few cars and absolutely no advertising signs. The reason I mention this is that the heroine of the country Aung San Suu Kyi, is one of the most fascinating people in the world, and few know of her. She won the Nobel Peace prize in 1991, and having been under house arrest for 15 of the last 21 years she was unable to attend the award ceremony. President Obama called her from Air Force One recently, and the first thing she asked him was how was Bo. The highlight of Hillary’s trip to Burma this week was having dinner with her. She has a degree from Oxford and a Ph.D from the University of London. And at the age of 66 she is beautiful. Anyone interested in the life of a woman who has given her life for the freedom of her country should spend a few minutes on “the Google” under her name.

I can’t leave the Newt “poor kids scrubbing toilets” thing alone. It speaks to the entire way of seperating the have’s from the have not’s. I remember Bush speaking at some toney dinner-”It’s great to be here among the haves and the have mores. You are my people”. My daughter has a mental disorder and lives on disability, food stamps etc. So, in Newt’s world my grandson should be cleaning up after the more well to do kids!!!!! I can honestly say I hate the man. My hair is on fire! I make sure my grandson and daughter have the things they need, but without my help their lives would be pretty narrow. The whole “welfare queen” of the Reagen administration is such a joke. Now Newt is saying food stamps can be used to get you to Hawaii. I would like to see him and his plastic wife live on food stamps for a month.

Besides all of that, it’s clear Mitt knows nothing about business or institutional cleaning. My cleaning days are well behind me, but I remember we had to use stuff that was simply too powerful, powerwise or chemicalwise, to use in a private home. They had to be that way to clean up after god knows who many with diseases no one knew they had. Why would Newt want to expose children to such danger.

This is why I love that President Obama will be speaking about the “haves and have nots” this coming Tuesday, and reminding the Republican Party what they used to believe, and what the values of this country should be. The GOP has dragged this country into the gutter, and they now revere ignorance, hatred, racism and greed. They’re about to get a lesson from President Obama.

I know. What has my hair on fire also is Newt’s statement about poor kids not seeing anybody working except those engaged in illegal activities. I’m sure this was a dog whistle to the racists, but there ARE poor white kids who live in cities and RURAL areas. The fact is on any day during the week go to a bus stop or subway station at 6:00am and see all the “poor” people who live in the “poor” communities going to work. They are known as the “working poor”. I detest this man. In fact, I detest Republicans.

Brazil gets tough on foreign companies

BMW, creator of German luxury cars, said this year that it would consider opening its first South American factory in their country. The announcement was yet another sign of confidence in Brazil, an up-and-coming emerging market that has seen rapid growth. Brazil has become a top investment destination as businesses seek burgeoning markets amid the crises in the US and European nations. In turn, Brazil has worked to lure investors with the promise of a business-friendly environment and the opportunity for robust growth.

    ~snip~

So BMW wanted to set up shop in South America’s largest country, with its booming business centre and potential for big sales. And then Brazil hit back. The Brazilian government raised its tax on industrialized products by 30 percentage points for companies that produce less than 65 percent of their goods in the region. It was a bold move by a developing nation. Traditionally, nations hungry for investment have been willing to offer huge concessions to lure foreign companies. But Brazil, an influential member of the powerful BRIC nations, has turned that model on its head.

President Dilma Rousseff, who rarely plays by the rules, said publicly that she raised the tax to keep foreign companies in check. “All the companies that are complaining don’t produce anything here in Brazil,” Rousseff said in a recent television interview. “What we want is for foreign companies to come to Brazil. So in order not to pay higher taxes, they have to produce here, they have to create jobs for Brazilians.”

    Maureen Dowd completely neuters Newt.

    A sample:

NEWT GINGRICH’S mind is in love with itself.

It has persuaded itself that it is brilliant when it is merely promiscuous. This is not a serious mind. Gingrich is not, to put it mildly, a systematic thinker.

His mind is a jumble, an amateurish mess lacking impulse control. He plays air guitar with ideas, producing air ideas. He ejaculates concepts, notions and theories that are as inconsistent as his behavior.

Sarkozy sells out to Merkel on euro rescue

PARIS, France — In recent days, the French press has accused President Nicolas Sarkozy of selling out to the Germans. Liberation, for example, said he had morphed into “candidate Angela Sarkozy,” writing, “if you closed your ears, you could hear Merkel speak.” The taunts are unlikely to cease as Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel work on their grand plan to save the euro zone, forcing Teutonic fiscal discipline down EU throats.

In a speech on Thursday, Sarkozy parroted Merkel’s ideas, arguing that the developed world was entering a “new economic cycle” dominated by debt reduction, with tough times ahead. Those who hoped he would announce a forceful intervention by the European Central Bank — with the creation of euro-bonds or a massive purchase of bonds — were disappointed.

Worried about losing its AAA credit rating, France had until recently been pressing Germany to lift its effective veto power on the European Central Bank and buy up sovereign debt to reassure markets and bring down interest rates. Germany instead has appeared more intent on punishing profligate EU members into balancing their books. And in the tete-a-tete between Berlin and Paris, Sarkozy blinked first. The president now says he is pushing for more fiscal discipline across Europe — Germany’s central demand.

Vermont’s Push to End Corporate Personhood
    Friday 2 December 2025

Over the last decade more than a hundred cities and towns across the country have passed ordinances putting citizens’ rights ahead of corporate interests. They have banned businesses from dumping toxic sludge, building factory farms, mining, and extracting water for bottling. Some have also refused to recognize corporations as people.

On Jan. 21, 2010, however, the US Supreme Court firmly rejected that idea in the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission case, ruling that corporations are “persons” with First Amendment rights and cannot be prevented from spending unlimited funds on political campaigns.

David Cobb is determined to change that, and returned to Vermont this week to promote the next steps in a campaign to amend the US constitution. Last January, Cobb, a former Green Party candidate for president who leads the Move to Amend campaign, spoke about the issue in Burlington, Waitsfield and Montpelier during a tour of the state organized by the Women’s International league for Peace and Freedom. He also met with 11 state senators who agreed to support a Vermont resolution calling on Congress to initiate the process.

Despite A 0.0002 Percent Rate Of Voter Fraud, Reince Priebus Claims Wisconsin Is ‘Riddled With Voter Fraud’

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus made a curious claim on MSNBC today, alleging that Wisconsin is a state “that was absolutely riddled with voter fraud.”

The problem? A recent study by the nonpartisan Brennan Center for Justice found just seven cases of voter fraud out of three million votes cast in Wisconsin during the 2004 election, a fraud rate of 0.0002 percent. All seven of these cases involved persons with felony convictions who weren’t eligible to vote after being released from prison.

GOP aide goes on trial in Maryland for suppressing black voters

A former Republican governor’s aide accused of election fraud in Maryland defended himself in court on Friday against claims an automated phone message he authorized was intended to suppress black Democrat voters. Paul Schurick, 55, campaign manager for former Maryland governor Robert Ehrlich, testified that the phone calls made to more than 100,000 Democratic, mostly-black voters on election night last year were intended to inspire them to vote.

The message assured listeners that Ehrlich’s Democratic opponent — incumbent Martin O’Malley who had defeated Ehrlich’s reelection bid in 2006 — and President Barack Obama, who was not up for election, were already “successful.” “Our goals have been met,” said the message delivered in a woman’s voice starting at about 6 p.m. on November 2. “The polls are correct and we took it back. We’re OK. Relax. Everything’s fine. The only thing left is to watch it on TV tonight.”

You have a lot of patience. I unfollowed him after just a couple of weeks. He got huffy with me when I asked him very politely to explain something he said. I think he’s bitten off more than he could chew and I can see why PBO let him go when he offered to resign. He has a good heart but lately not clearly in command of the political landscape in any kind of mature way. Just my opinion.

          What a shame too…

He could have been a voice for good for what it was really worth, but now he is persona non grata with the PL crowd who never really trusted him try as he did to earn their trust by turning on the President…

Worse still, he lost what would have been his true and natural support base - Obamacrats like us who appreciated his support of the President but now loathe him for his cheap, greedy & dishonorable flip…

You know, I think Piers Morgan needs to have some sort of “Obama” segment kinda like Tweety has “let me finish,” Ed has “PsychoTalk” and L’OD has “Last Word” segments on their respective shows.

He’s now asking Shaquille O’Neal the same question. I will tweet Piers and suggest that he reserve a segment just to ask people their feelings about Obama. I will suggest a variety of names for segment including but not limited to: “Dreams of Obama” “Musings about Obama” “Feelings for Obama” “Obsessions with Obama” “Ogling Obama” “Stalking Obama” “Haunting Obama” SHEESH.

Interesting….I remember seeing her on one of Oprah’s last shows before it ended and she was singing PBO praises. She told Oprah that she was mad at her at first for not supporting Hillary, but that Oprah had made a good choice and agreed with her. Sometimes I wonder if some of these 2nd rate stars just evoke the Obama name just for publicity. The media will rush to any celebrity that speaks negatively of him, but of course she could be delusional and medicated as well. But I expect lots of people wanting fame to kick up the negativity during this election season.

She’s claiming she is running on the Green Tea Party ticket although with one little problem - she’s registered in 0 of the 50 states. I tried to watch this and only got thru the first few minutes of her announcing her campaign outside the White House grounds.

Following in the footsteps of George Wallace
    by Dennis G.

George Corley Wallace is remembered as a symbol of American racism. Folks remember the image of him standing in the school house door to block integration and his words “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever”. Folks remember his two runs for the White House on a “Law and Order” platform that seemed to be entirely built out of racist code talking and dog whistles. Wallace worked hard to earn his status as an icon of racism.

And yet, I don’t think George Wallace was a racist. Rather, I think he was an ambitious man who decided that pandering to racists was his best path to power. In his early political life, Wallace was liberal—a progressive. He was an alternate Democratic delegate to the 1948 Convention and did not join most of the Alabama delegation as they walked out to protest the Civil Rights plank Harry Truman had added to the platform. He returned to Alabama and served on the Board of Trustees of Tuskegee Institute. He was elected a Circuit Court Judge and was remembered as being pretty damn fair regardless of race. In 1958 he ran for Governor and sought the endorsement of the NAACP while speaking out against the KKK and refusing their support. His opponent pursued the opposite strategy. Wallace lost badly and told a friend “you know why I lost that governor’s race?… I was outniggered by John Patterson. And I’ll tell you here and now, I will never be outniggered again.” In response, he tossed his values and beliefs overboard and perfect the pander to assholes as a winning political strategy.

And this brings me to Willard “Mitt” Romney. He is just as ambitious as George Wallace and like the former Alabama Governor willing to say and do anything in the pursuit of that ambition. Like Wallace, Romney has decide that pandering to racists and stoking their fears is a winning political strategy.

Now, you could argue that this is true of most of the GOP Presidential Candidates and there would be some truth to that. But many of the other candidates have built their entire political careers by shameless pandering to racists for their votes—they never had a moment where they could have been identified as a moderate let alone a progressive. For example, you could never identify a moment of his political career when Gingrich wasn’t pandering to assholes. It is all he has ever done. Newt is more like Strom Thurmond or Jessie Helms. Romney is different. He is more like Wallace.

Funny - Newt’s being compared to southerners like Thurmond and Helms. Newt was actually born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (oh, I’m sure they’re so proud). Remember when his mother was interviewed once and was asked what Newt had said about Hillary Clinton? Here’s the short reply his mother gave. Not much different than how Herb Cain seems to feel about women.

Gingrich, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, has support from 25 percent of likely Republican caucus-goers, up from just 7 percent in late October, the poll conducted for The Des Moines Register newspaper found.

Texas Representative Ron Paul and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney finished second and third, with support at 18 percent and 16 percent, respectively.

Look who was shilling Nasty Newt for his righteous ‘moral imperative’ to lead on the moral crisis in this country in 1995. None other than Arianna Huffington……..Make no mistake HuffinPuff is still a Republican! In light of his recent remarks about school children as indentured servants, the following promotion from Arianna is stomach turning.

Via Twitter > @michaelscherer RT @thegarance: RT @crampell blast from the past: Arianna Huffington in 1995, on “Why Newt Must Run” for president > http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Protected/Articles/000/000/007/009pomwg.asp

The first moral imperative was expressed by Gingrich in his first speech as speaker: “How can any American read about an l 1-year-old buried with his teddy bear because he killed a 14-year-old, and then another 14-year-old killed him, and not have some sense of “My God, where has this country gone?” How can we not decide that this is a moral crisis equal to segregation, equal to slavery, and how can we not insist that every day we take steps to do something?”…………

…..Precisely because Gingrich is right about the moral crisis the country is facing — millions of lives and entire communities destroyed by drugs, alcohol, gangs, and violence — there is a moral imperative for him to fill the leadership vacuum and address the growing devastation.

…..But just as the Gingrich of November 1995 is different from the one who assumed the speakership, so too the Gingrich of November 1996 could be a far different, far more inspiring public figure. Gingrich may be a lightning rod, but he also embodies the revolution like no one else. He is its most articulate, self-confident, and unapologetic voice, and he burns with conviction that America can and will be a better place because of it……..

    • 191 Jackie Grumbacher
      December 4, 2025 at 8:05 am

The idea of Arianna being the judge of anything moral is a joke in itself. There is nothing that woman won’t sell for the right price. Those who actually think she has any principles whatsoever are sadly, sadly mistaken.

I wish to thank Herman Cain for reinforcing every damn stereotype the Republican Party has about black males: he jives, he’s unprepared, he’s entitled, and wants to hoochy your wife. He was the perfect idea of what white Republicans think a black man is.

I think Van Jones has some good ideas, his problem is that he hasn’t figured out the right platform to deliver them. As far as the PL goes, they have been reduced to propping up the #OWS movement while simultaneously praising Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman.
