Reuters: A surge in hiring in the world’s largest economy last month drove the Nasdaq to an 11-year high on Friday as optimism grew that the labor market is on a steady path to recovery.
The broad-based gains on solid trading volume also sent the Dow Jones industrial average near a four-year high….
The U.S. economy created jobs at the fastest pace in nine months in January and the unemployment rate dropped to nearly a three-year low of 8.3 percent, the government said.
“It is really hard to find something not to like in the jobs report,” said Andrew Goldberg, market strategist at JP Morgan Funds in New York. “There is genuine strength in this report with broad-based jobs creation.”

NYT: The comeback from bankruptcy at Chrysler hit a milestone Wednesday when the smallest of the Detroit automakers reported a $183 million profit for last year, its first full year of positive earnings since 2005.
…. Last year’s results show how far Chrysler has come since 2009, when it was taken over by Fiat as part of the bailout engineered by the Obama administration.
Its revenue for the year increased 31 percent to $55 billion, and worldwide sales of its cars and trucks grew 22 percent to 1.85 million vehicles. In the United States, its market share increased to 10.5 percent, up from 9.2 percent a year earlier.

WMUR: A new poll shows that the improving economy has also raised President Barack Obama’s standing in New Hampshire.
….Obama has seen his job approval rating nearly flip from the last Granite State Poll in October, with 51 percent now saying they like the job the president is doing, compared to 43 percent who don’t. Just 41 percent said they approved in October.
…. Obama’s improved fortunes are also reflected in head-to-head matchups against the Republican field in New Hampshire. In hypothetical matchups, Obama leads Mitt Romney by 10 points, Ron Paul by eight points, and trounces Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum by 25 and 21 points respectively.

The article at Politico about the reporters believing the White House thought they were obsolete because of PBO’s participation in the google hangout had a link to a story written last year about why the press corp was down on the White House. I believe it was Ann Compton who derisively referred to these video clips by saying, “I hope the public doesn’t think that’s news. They are glossy videos put together by White House Staff.” So, there you have another reason why they don’t like this White House. It’s funny because they probably would not be interested in covering those kinds of stories anyway, yet they are angry that White House Staff covers them and puts out the videos every week without their help.

Now, I really have no particular dog in this hunt, but as an ex-New Yorker, I have to root for the Giants. I wish L.A. had an NFL team, if only for the reason that we’d get to host the SB a lot. (Of course, the stadium would have to be built with private funds, not a taxpayer boondoggle. Otherwise I’ll happily live without a team.)
I also don’t have a team I am excited about in this Super Bowl. We are going to watch with some friends and that will be the fun party. I also wish LA had a team. It’s hard to believe that no team has come. My family lives in LA. We grew up with the going to the Dodger games and the Lakers. At the Dodger games we sat up the in highest bleachers and watched Sandy Kofaux and the gang. I loved it. Of course it was $3 for us to go. Oh those were the days.
Another Angeleno here. While we don’t have a LA team, I did read that the Commish is considering to expand to 34 teams so we will get our own fresh new team. He doesn’t want to move a team from a city and bring it here to LA. So if we get a stadium built….a team will come!

Total corporate federal taxes paid fell to 12.1% of profits earned from activities within the U.S. in fiscal 2011, which ended Sept. 30, according to the Congressional Budget Office. That’s the lowest level since at least 1972. And well below the 25.6% companies paid on average from 1987 to 2008.

My best friend is a breast cancer survivor. I often refer to her when I talk about the ACA. She had cancer in the 90’s and afterward no insurance company would cover her except one, but the cost was so high it was insane. Now she has health insurance thanks to President Obama and the Dems.
This lady is AWESOME. She deserves full honors on my boat.

Am watching Rachel and I do think she is correct about the Union destroying along with the voter suppression laws the GOP is trying to enact to cut off funding to the Dems, the Union foot soldiers, and the Dem voters. If they cannot win fairly they are setting up the game to be in their favor. We need the Unions for more than just fairness in the workplace. They are essential to the existence of our political party.
I almost think the 2010 GOP takeover needed to happen while President Obama was in office, because people were awake and paying attention to politics and actually believed that government should do something. The GOP have been planning their takeover for decades, and they thought this was their chance. If Democrats can take over again in 2012 - all over - then more people will have been awakened and have higher expectations of their government - especially when they see President Obama and how he operates in his second term.
What I don’t understand is why now? Why didn’t they do this during the Bush/GOP controlled House/Senate? Were there too many DEM Governers? Is this a punishment because we voted in a AA president? i was profoundly sad too when realizing it, but he really has been the perfect person at the perfect time for the world’s history, and I feel blessed having been a part of it. Makes it so that we all need to be “in” like we’ve never been “in” on anything before so that we give him a House and Senate he can work with, and make everyone we know do the same, since its the last time. If we do that, i can’t even imagine how great the second 4 years will be! I do think Barack has been “grooming” Elizabeth Warren though based on their interactions with each other and her career path recently. She is clearly running an “obama-style” campaign and I bet we see Jim Messina and Dave Plouffe working for her in 2016. And just think what our guy and his family will be doing when out of office in2017! The future is so exciting!

That Republicans pretend history started the day Barack Obama was sworn in as president is nothing new. Their entire platform for the last three years has been based on denouncing the deficit they created while blaming Obama for it. And it mostly worked. The 2010 election was a referendum on the government’s out of control spending. Specifically, the spending done by the GOP. But that didn’t matter to conservative voters. Never one to let a successful tactic go, the Chief Obstructionist in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, has recently taken to making the wild claim that not only did President Obama have a fully compliant Congress for two years but that they rubber stamped everything he asked for. TPM reports:

So, I’m back for a while - what have I missed? I had to go on the road, plus my laptop is playing ‘on again, off again’ for no apparent reason. It conked out on me twice before I had to leave, so I’m not sure what will happen now. Computer Doctor VC diagnosed that it was maybe too hot, so she made sure to unplug it before leaving. [Do laptops overheat because they are run all day and well into the night? It’s only 2 years old!!!] For now Dr. VC took out the battery, because it wouldn’t start up, and is using the laptop plugged directly into the wall. I’m not sure if that will cause additional damage, but we’ll see. Tomorrow I might call the Staples electronics section and see what they think. Meantime if I disappear in the middle of a comment or without saying good night, it’s because the laptop protested the wall connection.
So, what did I miss that I have to know before I fade out? VC

You know, vc…my laptop is plugged into the wall outlet…but to allow the air to circulate under the computer, I prop the back end up with a paperback book….doesn’t overheat on me. Try that :)

Df, do YOU have to take your battery out of the laptop for the outlet to work? Once my battery stopped charging properly, I had to take it out in order to be able to USE the laptop. Also, do you use the wall outlet ALL the time and is that because your battery died?
No. The battery stays IN the laptop while plugged into the wall…the only thing different I do is that I prop the back of the computer up with a paperback, so the air is able to flow under the computer and it doesn’t heat up.
I do use the wall outlet all the time :) You know, I’ve never tried to be “remote” with the laptop….I ‘ll see if I can take it somewhere else, without being plugged into the wall…and see if it works. I’ll let you know.
VC, actually, yes, laptops can overheat. Don’t use a laptop in the bed, where the tendency is to prop it on a pillow or rest in on a comforter. A laptop needs to be on a hard surface that allows for air circulation.

I guess it’s kinda embarrassing for the GOP to see the economy climbing, unemployment dropping, and the stock market surging when they’re trying so very hard to make it appear that Obama has failed. I didn’t vote for him, I thought he was “too green” (inexperienced), but I’ve seen first hand what one minor stimulus plan did for the both the automotive and electronics industries. My company went from part of one shift of workers to three shifts and weekend overtime since the “Cash for Clunkers” program happened.
That was “Change I Could See”.
No “leap of faith” was needed.
I also saw a plethora of Republicans and Tea Partyers who ran on “jobs” platforms and have done everything else but work towards a better economy.
The bottom line is that I don’t have to have someone else tell me who is working in my best interests, I have firsthand proof and none of them look Conservative and/or Republican to me.
Judging one by the fruit he bears. Bless this guy for having eyes to see, ears to hear.

Did y’all see on The Ed Show that another RWNJ group is going after JCPenney for using Ellen as a spokesperson? Apparently, it’s some fake “family” group that doesn’t think LGBT people are part of families.
This week, Ellen gave a huge check to the Chester school district (directly to one of the teachers who decided to work for free, when the district ran out of money, so the kids could continue their education). Apparently, JCPenney was a part of the donation, and the pushback on Ellen was a follow-up story.
I’m too tired to type, but just wanted us all to keep this in mind - in case action similar to the pushback on Komen is required, to make sure JCPenney doesn’t cave under pressure. I’m guessing since they chose Ellen, they won’t - but you never know.
Does RWNJ stand for right wing nut job? Thes people are sick, Ellen is a beloved human being and going after JC Penny for using her as a spkesperson will back fire. It just exposes the hate these people have.

Well…..Chris Hayes just put the final nail in his coffin for me.
He has Jodi Kantor sitting at the table…….I am disgusted.
He also just said that when the President said that the tsunami in Japan affected the economy, he was using it as an excuse ??????
But…..now that he had a conversation with some Wall Street Flunky….who said the exact same thing yesterday….it must be true.
I didn’t hear Chris say that the Pres. was using the tsunami as an excuse. I did hear him site the tsunami as one of the things the were out of the Pres. control. I didn’t actually read the Kantor book so I don’t know what’s in it besides all of the parts were promoted. I have heard several left leaning people including Roland Martin say that it’s actually a positive portrayal of FLOTUS. My problem with this Kantor chick is she’s been claiming to have an intimate relationship with them after spending less than an hour with them. Anyway, Karen Hunter is doing a good job bringing proper context and correction to most of what Jodi is saying.
I cannot put my finger on it, put there is something very odd about Jodi Kantor.

Interesting thought Halo, but I don’t think the two are similar. Iran is a culture 3000 years or so old feeling threatened by outside forces, whereas the Cuban revolution was a new creation being used by the USSR as a pawn in the cold war with the West. Just my opinion.
Oh no I understand that, but just in terms of the scope of possibility of military strikes, trying to neutralize both sides, the possible ripple effects on the United States, mixed with nuclear weapons. I feel as though behind the scnes it is very tense with lots of negotiating happening to come to a solution.

And I understand the nuance in it that I didn’t know before, but many people don’t read WH.gov and will be susceptible to the lies of Robney. The admin’s positoin is that the insurance policies(!!) that cover religious organizations who employ non-believers, NOT churches (!!), will cover contraceptives w/o copays just like many of the states those organizations work in. Furthermore, 98% of women use contraceptives anyway so it helps them. But the important thing is the CHURCH isn’t forced to do anything, which is the prevailing view among Catholics!

Wow, how sad most of these “25%” are seniors, retired, and appear to have worked in government, receives a government pension and if Robme were elected their livelihood would disappear. The most revealing is they have the same reason people voted for BUSH…he was a businessman and he was a governor (a failed governor just like Bush).
JoJo, they wrap their hatred of PBO in “he’s a businessman.” As younote, they are mostly white seniors who are uncomfortable with PBO in the WH and are reduced to incoherence when actually asked about PBO’s policies. This isnot to say ALL white seniors don’t like PBO bc he’s black. That’s not true, as our TOD fam shows, but ALL white seniors who support Robney support him for no other reason than “get the black man out of the WH.”

I’m hoping that UTaustin gives us one of her excellent summaries because I didn’t actually watch the show but I was read people’s comments from Twitter, and apparently Chris Hayes brought Jodi Kantor on to promote/defend her controversial book “The Obamas.” He also brought on a panel that included Karen Hunter and Joan Walsh, who from what I read, both took the side of Michelle Obama to expose Kantor as an “anecdote” trash gossip who wrote the book simply for money and who had not spoken to FLOTUS in over 2 years. I don’t know all the details of what went on with the panel, but the overall impression is that Kantor continued to rub viewers (AND the panelists) the wrong way. I posted some of the tweets here for folks to see but my comment is being held in moderation.
Thanks HF2 that makes better sense. Its a strong union with these reporters/pundits. Her book has all but fallen off the face of the earth so Chris Hayes brings her on his show to give her more exposure. They are just pathetic.
I guess Karen Hunter gave one of them on the panel a real smackdown. I’m looking forward to seeing the video.
Karen Hunter was fierce. She didn’t get a lot of time to speak during the segment on Kantor’s book, but what she did get to say in that short time was fantastic.
1) She let it be known that she understood the publishing business from first hand experience.
2) She let it be know that she had not read Kantor’s book and she didn’t intend to.
3) She brought up the fact that Kantor got a large six figure advance for the book.
4) She implied that Kantor had to earn that advance. Of course, Kantor bristled at that. She said that as a writer the advance has no impact on what she decides to write. When Kantor said this, you could see Karen Hunter smiling broadly as if the say, I got your number Jodi Kantor. You can’t fool me. (Chris Hayes looked uncomfortable at this point because there was a little back and forth between Jodi and Karen). At one point Jodi says “Let Me Finish”. Karen obviously hit a nerve.
Bravo Karen Hunter.
Jodi Kantor is now trending on Twitter (people are mostly angry at her) because Chris Hayes decided to bring her on as a guest on his show. Just a few examples of some of the tweets:
