USA Today: Auto sales are growing so fast that Detroit can barely keep up.

Three years after the U.S. auto industry nearly collapsed, sales of cars and trucks are surging. Sales could exceed 14 million this year, above last year’s 12.8 million.

The result: Carmakers are adding shifts and hiring thousands of workers around the country. Carmakers and parts companies added more than 38,000 jobs last year, reaching a total of 717,000. And automakers have announced plans to add another 13,000 this year, mostly on night shifts.

…. the surge in hiring bolsters the argument of those who supported the federal bailout of General Motors and Chrysler in 2008…..

she’s such a liar. how can she bear being in their presence. surprised she didn’t go up in flames like a whore in church on sunday.
ps- no offense to whores. I’m pretty sure they don’t really go up in flames when they go to church on sundays. Actually, don’t quote me on that. I’ve never met a whore who went to church on sundays. I’ve known a few that go on Saturday and perhaps even Tuesday night bible study……… I wonder if they don’t go on Sundays because they really believe they’ll go up in flames if they do? Hm……. This requires more research…….. Off to confiscate my neighbor’s ‘little black book.’

Republican reaction to the president’s budget highlighted just how out of touch our colleagues across the aisle are when it comes to the nation’s economy. They seem to be unaware of the economic disaster President Barack Obama inherited and oblivious to the recovery now under way. To fairly evaluate the president’s budget, we must keep both in mind.

When the president took his oath of office, we were in the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression. In the fourth quarter of 2008, the economy contracted at an astonishing annualized rate of 8.9 percent. And we lost 800,000 private-sector jobs in January 2009 alone. Housing and financial market crises were rippling through the economy and unemployment was surging.

President Obama knows what he doing: here is the most important quote from the article

‘Bill McKibben, the environmental activist who led high-profile protests against Keystone XL said the Gulf Coast project won’t bring more oilsands crude into the United States, a major concern amongst pipeline critics who say that type of oil is dirtier than other sources.”

Alabama GOP wants Virginia’s vaginal ultrasound bill
By Laura Conaway - Mon Feb 27, 2025 1:32 PM EST.
    Click for the full collection.

This idea started with Jess Idres and Ali Davis, and kept on going.
A bunch of folks have been asking why Virginia got the nation in such an uproar over its vaginal ultrasounds bill, when Texas has had an even stricter one on the books for months now.

“I hate to say this, but in Texas we can fight all day long, but there’s a propensity to write us off,” said state Rep. Garnet Coleman, D-Houston.

“They think, ‘That’s Texas. Texas is a place where those kinds of things happen.'”

So maybe that’s Texas. Meanwhile, Alabama Republicans would like their own vaginal ultrasound bill. Alabama Senate Bill 12 actually says “vaginal” right in it, so there’s no sense in lawmakers pretending they don’t know that’s part of the deal. If you read the language of the bill, you’ll see that they think the state’s right extends inside a woman’s body, as do the rights of anyone claiming to be the father, as do the rights of anyone claiming to be the grandparents.

.No Enemies to the Right: The Defining Element of the GOP Primary

There was, last week, a brief but thrilling moment in the GOP presidential contest: It seemed like, for the first time, a candidate would be attacked for being, not too liberal, but too far right. Back in the day, that wouldn’t have been too unusual, as when George H.W. Bush, in a remark that would haunt the rest of his career, mocked Ronald Reagan’s supply-side convictions as “voodoo economics.” This year though, in a fight universally described as among the nastiest in recent history, all the attacks have been in just one direction: from the right.

This has obviously been the thrust of the endless criticisms of Mitt Romney, who has evolved from 2008’s movement conservative champion to 2012’s Republican in Name Only—even as his own policy positions have become increasingly conservative. But Romney has recently used the same tactics against his current rival, Rick Santorum. With Santorum roaming across the land like a firebug, suggesting that American liberty itself could not survive another Obama term, did Romney or his surrogates go after him for conservative extremism? Of course not: Santorum was blasted to hell and back for being a fiscal liberal or even for being in the “liberal wing of the Republican Party.” Suddenly his much-regretted endorsement of his Senate colleague Arlen Specter became a Mark of the Beast that obliterated his many years of service to the conservative cause; his votes (along with most other Senate Republicans) for George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind and Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit—understood at the time as central to Karl Rove’s master plan for building a conservative majority in the electorate—proved he was just another RINO.

Leap day comes just once every four years, and the Obama campaign in New Hampshire is putting it to good use as an extra day to organize and reach out to voters by hosting more than 15 grassroots events across the state.

The Obama campaign is calling this day of action a “Leap to Victory” and invites Granite Staters to join the Obama campaign on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at a grassroots event in their neighborhood. Work together to build this campaign the way it started – having conversations with your neighbors and bringing new supporters on board.

Earlier this month, the President went to Congress and defined in clear terms what he is fighting for in the months ahead – focusing on the middle Class and building an economy to last,” according to a press release from Obama’s New Hampshire campaign office. “We invite Granite Staters to join us on Feb. 29 and stand with President Obama – and our shared vision for this country – as we leap toward victory.”

The Mormons did a proxy baptism on Ghandi on February 16th.

Helen Radkey, a former Mormon who has until now has focused on researching incidents of proxy baptisms being proposed for or performed on dead Jews, discovered the Gandhi records on February 16 in a genealogical database restricted to Mormons.

She was prompted to search for his name after seeing a statement by a Nevada-based Hindu activist, Rajan Zed, who expressed concern the practice might be performed in the name of many Hindus.

Yes indeed, Bobfr: ” Reject Santorum & all his ilk. The Founders hated theocrats.”

Rick Santorum, who, I understand, has a law degree, and was a member of Congress for sixteen years, never bothered to read Article VI, paragraph 3, of the U.S. Constitution. That article is very clear: “no religious test shall ever be required as qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”

We should all chime in unison to remind Ricky that he is running for President of the United States and not for “POPE” of the pre-Fifteenth Century Holy Roman Empire. Some people have suggested that Rick Santorum wants to take the country back to the 1950’s America. I contend that Santorum wants to take this country back to the “Dark Ages.” He wants the power of being a U.S. President so that he may act as the Grand Inquisitor on behalf of right wing “so called Christians” who want to forcibly cleanse the evil of sex from American women.

Who want to put women’s rights and minorities rights back in the fifties. Who want to end Social Security, Medicare. Who want to give more tax cuts to the rich, and forget the middle class and poor. Who want to start another war with Iran. With all these things and more, Dowd wants to attack POTUS cause he doesn’t have parties or attend parties. How stupid.

Things are terrible here, as unemployment soars past 13 percent. Things are even worse in Greece, Ireland, and arguably in Spain, and Europe as a whole appears to be sliding back into recession.

Why has Europe become the sick man of the world economy? Everyone knows the answer. Unfortunately, most of what people know isn’t true — and false stories about European woes are warping our economic discourse.

Read an opinion piece about Europe — or, all too often, a supposedly factual news report — and you’ll probably encounter one of two stories, which I think of as the Republican narrative and the German narrative. Neither story fits the facts.

    Article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/27/opinion/krugman-what-ails-europe.html?_r=2&ref=opinion

    • February 27, 2025 at 7:09 pm

The unemployment rates in Europe are just staggering, LL - this is the chart from November (it’s got worse in most countries since):

The Spanish and Greek figures, in particular, are terrifying.

      • 143 Liberal Librarian
        February 27, 2025 at 7:13 pm

Really, I don’t understand how this is a “recession”. When 23% of the working population is unemployed as in Spain, that’s a depression.

        • February 27, 2025 at 7:22 pm

Being economically illiterate, I never really understand the difference between recessions and depressions, but if that isn’t a depression that Spain and Greece, in particular, are experiencing, then I don’t know what is. As they say, most of the countries in the top half of that graph are now facing a ‘lost decade’ - and few in the bottom half too, seeing as their banks financed much of the madness.

          • 145 Liberal Librarian
            February 27, 2025 at 7:28 pm

Japan had a “lost decade” of repeated recessions followed by anemic growth. But their unemployment never approached anything like Spain and Greece.

            • February 27, 2025 at 7:45 pm

LL, this is where I really wished I understood economics. I watched a documentary a while back on how Japan recovered from that lost decade, and most of it washed over my head. If I recall right, they clamped down hard on the banks that had caused most of their problems, in a fairly ruthless way - enough to restore confidence in the end in their financial system. And they were also helped, in time, by booming exports. I’ve no memory of how bad their unemployment rate got before that, but I certainly don’t remember it being as horrific as those Spanish and Greek figures.

                February 27, 2025 at 8:06 pm

Japanese unemployment was still pretty low, comparatively speaking. If I remember, it never got above 6%—this in a country with a traditional UE rate of 2% to 3%. But in the 1990s Japan grew at less than 1%, and tried many strategies before deciding to be ruthless.

        February 27, 2025 at 7:16 pm

I just don’t understand. How did this happen? Almost 1 in 4 Spanish people out of work.

        • February 27, 2025 at 7:30 pm

In Ireland’s case it was largely down to insane lending from unregulated Irish and European banks and a property bubble that was always going to burst - bringing the economy down with it when it did (a huge percentage of jobs were in construction). Many other countries’ stories, especially Spain, were similar. German and French banks did most of the lending, so the domino effect when the collapse began was extraordinary.

        • 151 Liberal Librarian
          February 27, 2025 at 7:35 pm

They were economically stronger to begin with, and didn’t run up the credit card. Basically, what entering the Euro allowed the PIIG countries to do was to borrow a lot of money at very cheap rates, due to the strength of the euro and ECB low interest rate policy. That ran up the debt to GDP ratio — Greece owes 150% of its GDP to banks. The northern countries traditionally have been stronger economically, so they didn’t need to borrow anywhere near as heavily.

          • February 27, 2025 at 7:51 pm

The irony of this is that German and Dutch banks were responsible for a lot of the reckless spending in other European countries that contributed to the collapse - was there tighter regulations in Germany and Holland?

(The Dutch Rabobank, for example, made loses of E390m in Ireland alone in 2009)

Exactly, and now the Germans are hollering that the Greeks have to scream before they get any money. Greece may very well pull an Argentina: default on all its debts and start over. And Argentina has a high growth rate now.

U.S. Recovering Faster Than Other Countries….

…If you look at the 10 largest developed economies in the world, the United States is the furthest along the path to recovery.

Looking back to their sample of 32 past instances with post-financial crisis recoveries, [McKinsey Global Institute] (MGI) zeroed in on Finland and Sweden’s experiences in the 1990s as the most relevant to our current moment. Those examples “show two distinct phases of deleveraging. In the first, households, corporations, and financial institutions reduce debt significantly over several years, while economic growth is negative or minimal and government debt rises. In the second phase, growth rebounds and government debt is reduced gradually over many years.”

Most economies, the authors say, are barely even in phase one. In the United Kingdom and Spain, for example, total debt is still rising. But not in the United States. Here, “debt in the financial sector relative to GDP has fallen back to levels last seen in 2000, before the credit bubble. U.S. households have reduced their debt relative to disposable income by 15 percentage points, more than in any other country; at this rate, they could reach sustainable debt levels in two years or so.”

Does anyone here recall PBO ever saying he was a White Sox fan as a child? The reason I ask is because I was watching a brief discussion about Romney’s recent NASCAR flub and the Republican as they are so well trained to do, before he commented about Romney got a dig in at PBO by claiming he could not name a player from the team when asked. It just did not ring true to me but no one refuted it so it was allowed to stand as fact. PBO did not move to Chicago until he was an adult and we all know his childhood was spent in Hawaii and Indonesia so I can’t imagine him saying he was a fan of the team as a child. PBO is an avid sports fan and not one to say things that aren’t true to gain favor. I just don’t believe he would leave himself open to a question like that without being able to answer. It was clear the Repub was trying to lessen the impact of Romney’s flub by saying PBO flubbed a sports question too. The old both sides do it nonsense.

Rick Santorum claimed high gas prices caused the recession on Monday.

“We need to look at the situation with gas prices today,” he said Monday at a campaign stop in Lansing, Mich. “We went into a recession in 2008 because of gasoline prices. The bubble burst in housing because people couldn’t pay their mortgages because they were looking at $4 a gallon gasoline.”

“Look at what happened,” continued the former Pennsylvania senator. “Economic decline. Here we are again. Trying to struggle out of a recession with Barack Obama and the federal government on the backs of business, not letting them grow. And now we have energy prices again, why? Because of government policy.”

Most attribute the economic recession to a combination of the collapse in the housing market and the financial crisis. However, a paper by economist James Hamilton suggested that the oil price shock in the summer of 2008 was an important factor dragging the economic slowdown into recession.

Oh, my. I’m back on TOD!

I really was just gonna take a little self-induced “time out,” get myself calmed down over the issues du jour, Chips and I had a virtual coffee and shared perspectives, then I was going to come back and the very gracious Chips said I didn’t even have to feel like the Prodigal Daughter, all good so far …

… and in the middle of that, my son experienced a significant emotional life event (planning to meet half-sisters he hadn’t known, none of them grew up with their dashing dad and they’re all meeting up with him this summer, together, on the east coast, all of which is filling up my son - a strapping 6’1″ guy with a poet’s soul). And, in celebration of the entire thing, I sat down at my keyboard to write about its implications, day and night for a couple of weeks, and I’m not kidding, and my son would chuckle and bring me food “because you should eat” - you can see I’ve joined my son in having a transformative period in my life, too. And I’m 65 freakin’ years old, so there’s HOPE for everybody. I’m sure so very sure Meryl Streep will be playing me some day, when she turns 65 and my little demonic love story gets turned into a film …

and now, tonight, I find myself better able to focus and concentrate on everything-Obama again. The good sidebar result of these last weeks is that I missed most of the recent Republican foolishness, including Santorum’s losing his brain, so I’m not as affected by all that as you must be.

Bottom line: Well, hello there Chips, and hello to all who commented about my absence that one night (my dear friend CanadaBarb passed that on to me, which I deeply appreciated - I felt like Sally Field at the Oscars, if anybody remembers that). So glad you all have kept these particular home fires burning, so the rest of us could catch up. I’ll be reading the posts tonight, and hitting up the blog on a regular basis in the morning. Thanks, again. Oh, and: yeehaw!

Well, madam, that did it! MADE MY NIGHT! I don’t think I’ve seen half of those video clips before. What a treasure. A very humble “thank you” from me! I bow to your gracefulness in life and graciousness on TOD.

Welcome home JO. Welcome home. Young blood… I got about 7 years on you and it gets better. Like you. I have some young’ns that met each other for the first time this year. All one can do is stand on the side and watch.
I wasn’t going to post today until I saw you and felt compelled to dip my paddle in the lake.
One thing then I’m done for the night. It occurs to me that Santorum, his family, and all these rethugs that are so concerned with womens va-jay-jays were born 400 years too late. They would have thrived on the Mayflower. (Damn pilgrams).

yardarm - I was just going to come back here for a minute, look at a couple of comments, then come back in the a.m.

But your comment - dynamite! I’m just coming down off an emotional high (somewhat), and saw what you wrote and it meant so much to know you knew some of what I’m going through. Your “all you can do is stand on the side and watch” is so very true. My son is 43 years old, and a big manly guy, but I told his current dream woman it’s gonna kill me not being able to be a part of the grand reunion - like letting him go around the corner on his bicycle out of sight for the first time - and, lucky for me, she said she’ll take a video of the moment! She’s a mom!

So, speaking only of your extreme worth as a human being, yardarm, since I’ve never seen your face in person and wouldn’t go there anyway, I’ll let you share something I told my son about his dad when he was younger, you know, to remind him they are both cuties: “He was why cavewomen chiseled, if they chiseled.” (You’re welcome.)

Chips - Loved your “St. Ricky” designation. The best I’ve seen yet, other than scary-eyed-monster-guy!

Be glad the young’ns are seeking each other out. It was important to me that my off spring know each other. Records only show that I have 3 children but in reality I have 4. My oldest just turned 55 and the youngest is 37.
Several months ago I did the Ancestry.com thing and what an eye opener. I found out things my parents never told me. At least mine won’t have that problem. So just be glad you have someone who is still vertical to the horizontal and free!

That’s what’s happening with my son’s (what I call) new “tribal nation.” Fascinating. Luckily, my son turned out to be the most courageous among all of them, and is getting the whole group together - strictly by introducing himself slowly (although they knew about him) and becoming friends first, and then his good heart and their good hearts have taken over. But he’s been seen to just put his head in his hands for a quick cry, at times, this past month - and his sisters went on Facebook to wish him a happy birthday for the first time on the 19th. Sob. Sob. I’m SO HAPPY for him and all of your young’ns, too.

By the way, my son’s dad is 12 years old than I am - so maybe you should have a “chat” with him, on how to accept the fact that it’s okay to love all of them, no matter when they “show up” in his life!

I’m so glad you did the Ancestry.yardarm thing. :)

You can tell someone that you want to be loved; but you can’t tell them how to do it. You can check me out on FB if you are so inclined.

Thanks to all of you, so much! You’re all special to me, but some of you have been special to me since about ’07, and you know who you are, and I’m glad to be back among you, too!

Think I’ll #presson now, as President Obama would say!
