    Paul Ryan’s Fairy-Tale Budget Plan

    By DAVID A. STOCKMAN
    Published: August 13, 2025

    ———————————

Mr. Ryan showed his conservative mettle in 2008 when he folded like a lawn chair on the auto bailout and the Wall Street bailout. But the greater hypocrisy is his phony “plan” to solve the entitlements mess by deferring changes to social insurance by at least a decade.

The Ryan Plan boils down to a fetish for cutting the top marginal income-tax rate for “job creators” — i.e. the superwealthy — to 25 percent and paying for it with an as-yet-undisclosed plan to broaden the tax base. Of the $1 trillion in so-called tax expenditures that the plan would attack, the vast majority would come from slashing popular tax breaks for employer-provided health insurance, mortgage interest, 401(k) accounts, state and local taxes, charitable giving and the like, not to mention low rates on capital gains and dividends. The crony capitalists of K Street already own more than enough Republican votes to stop that train before it leaves the station.

In short, Mr. Ryan’s plan is devoid of credible math or hard policy choices. And it couldn’t pass even if Republicans were to take the presidency and both houses of Congress. Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan have no plan to take on Wall Street, the Fed, the military-industrial complex, social insurance or the nation’s fiscal calamity and no plan to revive capitalist prosperity — just empty sermons.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY ‘SS’

    By Jared Bernstein

    ————————————-

She’s always worked for the government, but a lot of her friends in the private sector who provided the same kind help for retirees are no longer around. And yet, despite her continued effectiveness relative to her private counterparts, some people want to take her out of the public sector and turn her guarantee of help for all comers into a risky bet on the stock market.

Pelosi Statement on 77th Anniversary of Social Security

    =============================================

“With the creation of Social Security 77 years ago, our nation made a commitment to the dignity and retirement security of America’s seniors. Social Security provides Americans with a guaranteed lifetime benefit that is protected against inflation, earned with a lifetime of hard work. And today, as we do every day, Democrats reaffirm our commitment to Social Security and the promise to strengthen it for future generations.

“On the other side of the aisle, Republicans continue in their relentless efforts to slash Social Security benefits and undermine our seniors’ economic security. Congressman Paul Ryan has proposed privatizing Social Security and wrote the Republican budget that ends Medicare as we know it and shifts costs to seniors.

“Democrats will always stand strong for Social Security, for Medicare, and for our nation’s seniors.”

Stephanie Cutter, deputy campaign manager for the Obama campaign, pushed back on MSNBC Tuesday afternoon. “I appreciate the faux outrage of the Romney campaign,” Cutter said.

Rick Santorum invoked chains last summer to warned Iowa voters that health care reform would lull citizens into government dependency. “They will put you in chains called ‘Obamacare,’ and you will never break away,” Santorum said.

Florida Rep. Allen West went a step further, likening Obama’s programs to slavery. “He does not want you to have the self-esteem of getting up and earning and having that title of American,” West said in July. “He’d rather you be his slave.”

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, refused to condemn West’s comments at the time, but he tweeted his disapproval of Biden’s remark Tuesday.

The campaign bolstered that with an emailed statement from Cutter soon after:

“For months, Speaker Boehner, Congressman Ryan, and other Republicans have called for the ‘unshackling’ of the private sector from regulations that protect Americans from risky financial deals and other reckless behavior that crashed our economy. Since then, the Vice President has often used a similar metaphor to describe the need to ‘unshackle’ the middle class.

Today’s comments were a derivative of those remarks, describing the devastating impact letting Wall Street write its own rules again would have on middle class families. We find the Romney campaign’s outrage over the Vice President’s comments today hypocritical, particularly in light of their own candidate’s stump speech questioning the President’s patriotism. Now, let’s return to that ‘substantive’ debate Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan promised 72 hours ago, but quickly abandoned.”

While greeting patrons outside the coffee shop, the President was asked about the White House homebrew by a man in the crowd, a campaign aide said. After the President described the beer, the fellow requested a bottle.

The President “sent out to Ground Force One and gave him one,” the aide said.

How Reporters Are Letting Romney Get Away With His Plans to Massively Cut Medicare

    By Jonathan Cohn

    —————————————

The proposals Romney has made so far would, with virtual certainty, require cuts to Medicare. These cuts would likely be larger, and possibly much larger, than the cuts in the Affordable Care Act—yes, the very same cuts that Romney keeps attacking Obama for enacting.

As far as I can tell, pundits and reporters are not holding the Romney campaign accountable for this. Nor are they demanding Romney explain how he’d possibly drain Medicare of so much money without causing harm to seniors. I’m not trying to beat up on the press here. Romney has been cagey about this part of his agenda, describing his Medicare plan only in broad brushstrokes and vowing, at every turn, to “save” Medicare for seniors. And the selection of Paul Ryan as a running mate has actually muddled things more, since Ryan’s latest budget proposal happens to have less severe cuts to Medicare.

But Romney’s designs for Medicare become crystal-clear if you look at his agenda as a whole. Yes, you also have to keep some numbers in your head. But I think I can keep it to just two. Let’s give it a shot, shall we?

Breaking new ground in Chutzpah Politics

    BY Steve Benen

    ————————-

What’s remarkable is just how spectacularly dishonest Romney is. It’s like he heard about an award that goes to the lyingest liar who ever lied in the history of liars, and Romney’s so eager to win the award that he’s becoming a parody of himself.

Reality is actually quite simple. Republicans argue that Medicare savings are necessary for the health of the program, and Obama found such savings, without touching Medicare benefits, and while strengthening the financial health of the system. The savings are so sensible, they’re part of Paul Ryan’s Republican budget plan — which Romney has endorsed.

Think about that for a second. Romney’s truly pathetic attack ad goes after Obama for a policy that Republicans, including Romney’s own running mate, have adopted.

    [I thought he spoke Spanish?]

Romney had an appearance at a Miami juice shop (owned by a convicted drug dealer) later in the day and the host told the GOP candidate, “They’re waiting for you with a mamey and a guayaba — Cuban fruits — here in Miami, do you like those?”

“I am a big fan of mango, papaya, and guava,” Romney said.
The hosts chuckled and added, “There are mangos there too.”
We’re not sure if the host and translator laughed with Romney in his moment of candor, at the fact that he added mango and papaya to the list, or that the latter is Cuban slang for “vagina.”

But either way, it was a lighthearted moment for the candidate. We enjoyed it. And we’ll also give Romney pass on the “papaya” thing; after all he doesn’t speak Spanish.
