July, 2010
Full video here

July 2012 marked the two-year anniversary of the enactment of the Tribal Law and Order Act …. Lisa Iyotte, a Lakota woman, a survivor, shared her personal story of her brutal rape that occurred in her home on a reservation as her young daughters watched. The man who raped her was never prosecuted for his crimes against her.
As President Obama put it:
“When one in three Native American women will be raped in their lifetimes, that is an assault on our national conscience; it is an affront to our shared humanity; it is something that we cannot allow to continue.”
More here and here
****
I just thought of this video tonight, after the events of today. The President wasn’t meant to appear until Lisa Iyotte introduced him, but while speaking for every victim of rape (because, needless to say, it’s not just the native American community that suffers from this horror), she was overcome, so he came out early to comfort her.
It was what ‘Romney/Ryan/Legitimate Rape 2012’ would never recognize:
Humanity.

That’s a little harsh
Bobfr, let me elaborate because you are so tireless on PBO’s behalf. I am no fan of Ann Romney but it seems to me that calling withholding of tax returns the moral equivalent of rape is a stretch and also, I never want to give the Republican Industrial Victimhood Complex any material.
Appreciate your perspective, however, the analogy could not be more fitting.
Her attitude of “You People” have seen what you are going to see, coupled with her enormous disrespect for women, make her exactly the kind of person who uses strength, self-righteousness and unbounded entitlement to violate another person and then play the victim.
What Ryan and Akin have tried to legislate effectively enables the assailant to claim victim-hood and rights over the abused woman.
That is exactly how Ann Romney views her place in American society - a rich, entitled, superior being who, irrespective of harm done, is to be pitied as the real victim.
So, from my perspective, Ann and Mitt Romney need to learn the meaning of harsh accountability, up close and personal. That needs to happen every single day from now until 6 Nov, thereafter they can retire to their mansions, cry all the want, sell crippled drugged animals to whomever they can rip off, destroy more people’s careers, steal more pensions, enslave foreign workers, … i.e., be the exploiters of the weak they have always been - until someone puts a stop to that behavior, as well.
Thank you.
could I be first?
So good of you to post that, Chips. Was watching it live and was totally moved by the empathy President Obama displayed. It was a great moment for humanity.
For you Chips, and for all women …
It was an extremely touching event. I couldn’t stop the tears.
I agree. I am a Native American raised in Arizona. I can’t give enough thanks to President Obama for this. We Native women will forever be in his debt and honor him for as long as he lives.
Chips = Legend. I was just reading about that loonbag who coined the term “legitimate rape” and immediately thought of Ms . Iyotte and the compassion our President showed her. This didn’t get much play back when it happened. It certainly should now. Thank you!
You know, maybe I’m a pollyanna, but I keep thinking “Surely, the GOP has hit rock bottom. It couldn’t sink any further, could it?” And then a troglodyte GOP congressman comes along and talks about “legitimate rape” and women’s bodies able to magically ward off a rapist’s sperm. We must crush the GOP this fall. Nothing else will suffice.
THIS!
YES!
I think the phrase “born worrier” may be the perfect phrase to describe me. I worry about every little thing the GOP and supporters have going against PBO’s re-election. I see glimmers of hope many times but then the suppression of voters pop up and the judges rulings on it. The lies from the other side framing the election may be believed. Every little thing but this site has so many positive postings it gives me hope. Thanks!
I keep donating as much as I can for this re-election. In recent days I have actually had some smiles when I read that it may still be possible to keep the Senate and take the House besides get our President re-elected. That would be so great.
You are absolutely right LL ! “The GOP has hit rock bottom.” This man, Todd Akin is a disgrace to all humanity, male and female. Does Akin have a mother? Does he have any daughters? Does he have any sisters? What if any of his relatives ( e.g. Daughter mother, sister) were raped? Would he be going around talking about whether they experienced legitimate or illegitimate rape? Would he be talking about them being able to “magically ward off a rapist’s sperm”?
If Missouri elects this despicable man to the United States then all those who vote for him will be complicit in his vile attitudes towards women, including their own mothers, daughters and sisters. Sometimes I wonder if I am really living in the 21st century because the behavior of these right wingers are so bizarre!
LL, I think there are untold depths to which they can descend. Their enthusiasm for bombing Iran and their utter disregard for the Iranian lives it would cost makes their so-called concern for human life a mockery. They would crush souls, destroy and demean women, obstruct anyone of color from voting, and nuke whole populations. And this passes for a ‘legitimate’ political party in the US-one that our blighted media extol and justify everyday.
And nothing LEGITIMATE about it. It is hard to imagine these people with wives, daughters, sisters, moms or any females in their lives. A very sick bunch of people.
From what I’ve read about this Akin guy, he thinks that it’s ok “LEGITIMATE) for a husband to rape his wife. And this is the man that may end up being a United States Senator. You are right, Africatimes2, these are ” a very sick bunch of people.”
Nath this Akin moron must be tied to Ryan and Romney to sink them all. The issue of women has now been pushed front and center in this campaign and the contrast between the two parties for all women is now stark. It is not enough for a GOP presidential candidate to say, I don’t agree. IT IS NOT ENOUGH!! First, it’s a lie because the R/R twins have contempt for women and oppose any abortion for whatever reason. Second, it’s the statement of a wimpy coward. Where is his outrage? Where’s the compassion? If his wife or daughters in law were brutally raped, would be say, “I don’t agree with that?” MIchael Dukakis was crucified because he gave a reasoned, non-passionate answer to a debate question about the possible rape of his wife. Where’s the media outrage? Where are the screaming headlines about Willard’s statement? Where are the stories about the intimate connection between Akin and Ryan. The media put their corporate paychecks above everything and cheerfully sell their souls.
I’m very opposed to violence, but I REALLY want to give this fecal-smear todd akin a near death beating. It wouldn’t accomplish anything, but it would be deserved. Venting. Sorry.
He is re-victimizing women who have suffered through this horrible offense with his insane lack of sensitivity to this issue. Pure scum.
I remember that day, that speech, this very special woman and the way PBO cared for her. Such a moving event. Thank you, Chips, for bringing it to the forefront as we get lambasted yet another day by the GOP War on Women.
I also want to remind people that the House was holding up the Violence Against Women Act because it included Native American women and LGBT. Disgusting cretins.
THIS TOO!!
That’s right, meta. Disgusting cretins is too nice
You are too kind meta, these people are pure evil despite their pretensions that they are pious Christians who want to preserve life. All descent and honorable men, who have mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces, grandmothers, etc., etc, should speak out loudly and denounce these despicable men, like Todd Akin. Without the overwhelming white male votes, these despicable men would not be elected to public office to wage their war against women.
“Without the overwhelming white male votes, these despicable men would not be elected to public office to wage their war against women.”
And, 2012 is the last American election in which that segment of the population has any demographic chance of prevailing. That fact is at the core of the unrelenting voter suppression.
If WOMEN vote - every eligible woman in the USA - not only will they protect the rights of women to vote in subsequent elections (one of the many Constitutional rights on the line in this election) they will protect the rights of blacks, Latinos, Asians, … to vote in subsequent elections.
I assure you, besides the Supreme Court, the other mega-issue of the outcome on 6 Nov 2012, are the Constitutional protections of women and minorities to VOTE. Make no mistake, if the plutocrats prevail with #RomneyRyan, they won’t set back Constitutional rights to the date original document was ratified, they’ll shred the Constitution, itself.
These are vile people with an aristocratic, oppressive, avaricious agenda. They view America as a base for global economic dominance with only one purpose, their personal enrichment. As to the rights of women and anyone not white and ancestrally related to the plutocratic few - forget it. You are owned. No sentient person with even a casual knowledge of #BainMitt’s career and that of the Kochs, Adelson, Scaife, the Waltons, etc should have any doubt about what will happen if Barack Obama is not re-elected. Just observe Ann D Romney if you have any lingering doubt.
#PRESSON
Meta, we have to e-mail, call or tweet every media person and make this excellent point. The US GOP-led House of Representatives held up the Violence against Women Act because they felt justified in deciding who was worthy of being protected from brutal rape. Women of this country have to unite. We can’t stop hammering this until every station and newspaper in the country covers it. Who in hell do GOP Congressman think they are. They are not GOD, they are our servants. Let’s kick them all to the curb this November.
Not sure if I want to watch the video. The pictures moved me to tears and I’m a guy… I think it’s disgusting what some men do to prove their ‘dominance’ or whatever it’s called. Akins is a goner I think… I hope at least that Missouri isn’t this stupid.
According to Jefferson Obama (twitter poll geek) last poll had President Obama within 1 in Missouri although up to now McCaskill has lagged. This should be a boost to her chances. Akin is extreme in everything. Doesn’t think people should elect the senators, rather the legislators (77% male) should.
please consider watching this video -yes, it will break you heart but it will also re-assure you the other side which is made up of decent people who are ready to ALL it takes to defend the right of women and other vulnerable groups.
I remember watching this event live and yes I cried like a baby through it all
Krugman breaks down the BS rampant in Ferguson’s article.
Unethical Commentary, Newsweek Edition
There are multiple errors and misrepresentations in Niall Ferguson’s cover story in Newsweek — I guess they don’t do fact-checking — but this is the one that jumped out at me. Ferguson says:
The president pledged that health-care reform would not add a cent to the deficit. But the CBO and the Joint Committee on Taxation now estimate that the insurance-coverage provisions of the ACA will have a net cost of close to $1.2 trillion over the 2012–22 period.
Readers are no doubt meant to interpret this as saying that CBO found that the Act will increase the deficit. But anyone who actually read, or even skimmed, the CBO report (pdf) knows that it found that the ACA would reduce, not increase, the deficit — because the insurance subsidies were fully paid for.
Now, people on the right like to argue that the CBO was wrong. But that’s not the argument Ferguson is making — he is deliberately misleading readers, conveying the impression that the CBO had actually rejected Obama’s claim that health reform is deficit-neutral, when in fact the opposite is true.
More than that: by its very nature, health reform that expands coverage requires that lower-income families receive subsidies to make coverage affordable. So of course reform comes with a positive number for subsidies — finding that this number is indeed positive says nothing at all about the impact on the deficit unless you ask whether and how the subsidies are paid for. Ferguson has to know this (unless he’s completely ignorant about the whole subject, which I guess has to be considered as a possibility). But he goes for the cheap shot anyway.
We’re not talking about ideology or even economic analysis here — just a plain misrepresentation of the facts, with an august publication letting itself be used to misinform readers. The Times would require an abject correction if something like that slipped through. Will Newsweek?
http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/19/unethical-commentary-newsweek-edition/
Tina and Ferguson are going to come to regret the day they published that disrespectful garbage on our President.
What can i do? I don’t buy Newsweek.
Anniebella, the fact that you don’t buy Newsweek is major action on your part. Just don’t give them any of your hard earned money. You can also urge people you know to stop buying, or subscribing to, Newsweek.
The Daily Beast could also be boycotted, along with the actual magazine.
I think I had better wait until daylight to view this one….. Thank you Chips, thank you TOD, for a wonderful day. I was here a fair bit, mostly reading, so much going on at present, TOD = Refuge. Goodnight, sweet dreams. Thank you, God, for PBO.
Thank you Chips & TOD community for maintaining this oasis and providing yet another excellent day of wonderful, informative, insightful and interesting TOD posts :) :)

Growing Number Of Conservatives Call On Akin To Withdraw After ‘Legitimate Rape’ Comments
http://thinkprogress.org/election/2012/08/19/712151/growing-number-of-conservative-call-on-akin-to-withdraw-after-legitimate-rape-comments/
Rep. Todd Akin, the GOP Senate candidate in Missouri, set off a firestorm today after claiming that women who are victims of “legitimate rape” don’t usually become pregnant because “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Now, several conservative writers have started calling for Akin to withdraw from his Senate race:
One of the first was Reihan Salam, a prominent author at the conservative flagship National Review:
“Todd Akin ought to step the heck down.”
John McCormack, a staff writer at Bill Kristol’s The Weekly Standard, also called on Akin to step down:
“.@RameshPonnuru tried to warn us about Todd Akin nationalreview.com/corner/313005/… #headdesk” [… more in the article]
Akin isn’t going anywhere, Dudette, because he has people like Dana and Chris Loesch defending him. Republicans have different rules for themselves and another set for other people. This is why Romney can say he won’t release more of his tax return records and Akin can say something so offensive like this about women who are raped. IMO, all of the anti-women legislation that republicans have passed the last few years is a reflection of how they, and Akin, really feel about women. In their minds, we’re second class citizens. When I read what Akin said, I was very angry and wondering who he thinks he is to speak about a subject that he knows nothing about. I certainly hope the women, and the men who care about them, in Missouri are paying attention to how batshit crazy he is. If they send him to the Senate, he’ll be another dumb, obstructionist, loud mouth. Romney ignored calls from republicans to release more tax returns and Akin will ignore calls from republicans to withdraw from the senatorial race.
http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/40777_Dana_and_Chris_Loesch_Defend_Akins_Legitimate_Rape_Comments
I hope he doesn’t step down. A democrat needs to keep the senate seat in this state.
I know she’s been struggling in the polls to retain her seat, but if Claire McCaskill can’t beat this cretin after this, that seat was lost before the race began.
If they’re asking Akin to step down then they need to ask the co-author of his “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” PAUL RYAN to step down as well. http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/08/19/712251/how-todd-akin-and-paul-ryan-partnered-to-redefine-rape/?mobile=nc
Agree, Imrj. That’s why we have to link Akin and Ryan together always.
Once again we are reminded of the fundamental decency that lies within Pres. Obama.
Thanks for the video Chips even though I’m all choked up and teary eyed. It’s a good kind of teary eyed.
Comforter in Chief is a great title for this empathetic man. Also remember the story that came out after PBO became President from a woman in a Scandinavian Country that recognized PBO after he was elected from many years earlier when she was in line at the airport about to fly to join her husband. Her suitcases were overweight and she was upset without enough money to pay the overcharge on them. The next person in line paid for her bags so she could continue her trip. That person was Barack Obama. He was not that wealthy at that point in time either. He took a chance on a stranger stepping up to help her. The comforting of the Native woman and help to this young bride are two stories that have come out about him. There are probably many more stories out there.
I too remember the story about that lady who was a stranger to PBO and received kindness when th cameras were off. this is the true decency of PBO - good and kind to the last drop
Chips - Thank you for bringing the ugly Republican topic du jour over to the side of the ballot where people actually have souls and empathy and humanity, as epitomized by President Barack Obama every day of his life and his first - and second - terms in office as the leader of the free world. And by the gazillion women and the men who love them in that free world and beyond.
Vote a straight Democratic ticket! Landslide 2012! President Obama + Speaker for Life Pelosi + Majority Leader Reid = The Real “Freedom” !!!
THIS.
President Obama is a man with the courage of his convictions above all others. He is a compassionate soul who devotes his life to bringing social justice to our beleaguered nation, not for the sake of receiving our gratitude but for the good of humanity. That everyone cannot see this or sense this means that he is an absolute gift to us in this moment.
Well said, meta. Just beautiful. We are lucky to be able to see and sense it - in the moment.
Meta, something is fundamentally wrong with right wingers. They go around denigrating women, but when they are in trouble politically, they fall back on women in their lives; especially their mothers and their wives. Witness the way Romney uses his wife to defend against those who think he lacks genuine capacity for human empathy. Witness also the way Ryan used his mother to fend off criticism of his plan aimed at destroying medicare.
Shows you that every once in a while the truth of what those nematodes actually believe oozes out of their orifices
I just saw Miss Ann on the news saying, “We’re not going to take it any more! We’re taking the White House back!!!” She yelled that last sentence. I think the Willard campaign has been handed over to Miss Ann, per her insistence. She keeps saying that she should do all the talking from now on and that he can’t do a thing without her. And the media keeps trying to pump her up, trying to make her into something golden about the Romney candidacy, and it’s not working. It looks desperate.
Can you just imagine if Michelle Obama had carry herself like that Queen Ann is? I will not feel sorry for her when she and Mitt goes back to where ever it is they came from for good. Utah or where ever.
The more she talks the better for team Obama/Biden! Let her keep talking.
Agree. Rmoney looks weak, she looks deranged. Keep it up.
So it’s like the beast in greek mythology that grows back multiple heads when one gets chopped off. Sarah Palin gets cut back down to size with defeat and up pops the Romneys and Paul Ryan.
Palin got “cut back down to size” when it was revealed that she slept with Glenn Rice (former NBA player). That was her downfall (such an act was unacceptable to the Tea Party set that worshipped at Ms. Palin’s alter). Up to that point she was still pretty prominent in GOP circles.
just keep pushing her forward, and we can all watch her unravel. the woman has a mean mouth and and scary eyes, and she doesn’t handle being challenged gracefully or intelligently.
It was not so very long ago that women carried the “shame” of rape. Therefore, a large percentage of women never reported the crime. All to often if the crime was reported and went to trial the woman was portrayed as a whore. Her clothes were too tight or too short. She had had lovers in the past. Even today far too many women don’t report the crime, especially “date rape”. The last thing we need is some lowlife dirtbag saying that women’s bodies will stop the process of conceiving if she is raped. Every fucking time I think I have heard to most extreme bat shit crazy lunacy from the right wing, they prove me wrong. I don’t believe anyone knows the depths of crazy from these people.
It is scary isn’t it sabreen? And sad, and anger-provoking, and unbelievable. It is like the GOP has no decency, no humanity.
Yup!….and Michelle Bachmann is on the intelligence committee. I often times wonder if Paul Ryan is the so called revered brainiac of the party what does that lower everyone else in the party to?
I am sure he is on that committee not to promote science but derail science. He is a stronger believer in the theory of “Intelligent Design” which he thinks should be taught in biology classes to counter the theory of evolution.
Comedy Gold on twitter with the republican skinny dipping:

A little preview of my new piece for TPV:
Hate the subject matter, but this excerpt from your new TPV piece is wonderfully written. Goodnight to ya.
Thank you for posting this. Appreciated @TigerFists88 for tweeting. @MittRomney @RepPaulRyan @ToddAkin are not fit to stand in President Obama’s shadow. Think Prog has updated Romney-Ryan campaign “statements” post Akin’s #LegitimateRape comments, including a Poitico reporter’s attempts to defend Akin. President Obama remains par excellence in demonstrating National Leadership & in representing Women. Glad to have been shown your blog by TigerFists. Will follow. ~ Cheers, WW.
waterwynd - Welcome to TOD, on behalf of the rest of the TODers! So glad to see another Obama supporter join us, especially one recommended by ROCK (TigerFists88)!
This may have been posted already, but just received the latest email from Debbie Wasserman-Schultz on the “Legitimate Rape” comment. There’s a petition to Take a Stand for Women at the DNC website (the website is looking pretty spiffy these days):

Judge Maxwell is now going viral. YouTube at 31,514 in 2 days. All over Twitter and Facebook. http://www.examiner.com/article/mitt-romney-poem-going-viral-wherefore-art-thou-mitt-romney
Sorry it’s an Examiner post. Just got excited for the judge.
It’s just great … and has more than 36K views now …
Truly hope they show it at the DNC and invite him to the Inauguration Ball along with these folk!
I’ve asked :)
Rest well everyone …
Akin was using the fact that a relatively small % of women get pregnant after rape to validate his remarks - it seems obvious to me - a large % of women use birth control - I certainly didn’t trust a rhythm, nor a man to stop me getting pregnant - hence there are some scientific reasons why women may not get pregnant when raped - nothing to do with voodoo or thinking good religious thoughts.
On the same tack it seems the most vulnerable to rape pregnancy could be married women who are in the midst of raising a family - and my next thought was, would a GOP husband demand that they NOT have an abortion - and if so would he then divorce her because the baby was not his?
The treatment of women by the GOP is unbelievably draconian - I feel physically ill thinking about it.
Newsweek is still solvent?!?

I’m kind of tired of all the whining about ‘negative politics’. Republicans have been practicing Negative Politics against PBO for 4 1/2 yrs. WTF. The MSM pretends to be affronted by the aggressiveness of the Obama campaign. This is nonsense. They’re just not used to Democrats playing hardball. Other Democrats need to stop whining too. If PBO can take it , we can take a little too. When the GOP bullies try to push us around, we’re not going to just take it. We hit back.
the gop cannot believe that Pres Obama is ready to push back on their bullying tactics.
republicans expected to attack PBO and he would turn the other cheek.
well they do not know the PBO who will give as good as he gets in counter-attack.
PBO said if people try to take advantage of him, then he “will crash them”. gop be warned
Ms Chips,
Thank you for reminding us of this law and event when it was signed.
I remember watching the event live and yes crying like a baby as I watched the interaction between PBO and Ms Iyotte.
Yes, I just cried again now watching the video.
Thank you Prez Barack Black Eagle for your leadership and what you have done for all of the people you lead
I remember when Politico said the Wh has advisers that are always Fighting, hemming and hawing.
Axelrod said it was nonsense.
Now, Politico is saying the same thing about OFA advisers.
They are making shit up. This has Rove written all over it, and they are copying a tactic used in 2010 against the Wh. It’s to throw them off their game, get them to wonder who is leaking etc.
Politico does some good reporting from time to time. This ain’t one of them. Some in Politico feed the Conspiracy- Tea bagger wing of the GOP. Whether they do that fir web traffic, or because they are Tea Baggers, it’s not Journalism.
The best objective , for Politico, reporter they have is Maggie Haberman. Straight reporter.
The Hill website has the same problem, a Mountain of information, but top heavy with Tea bagger crap. The best Journalist they have is Karen Finney, who posts on Tuesdays.
Just saying.
We don’t have the audio yet, but the Obama campaign has put out word that it will begin running seven different radio ads hyping the impact of the “Romney-Ryan budget” in the presidential swing states. The coming attacks, per Chicago:
· In Florida, voters will hear how experts have said that the Romney-Ryan plan turns Medicare into a voucher and takes away the guarantee that millions of Floridians count on.
· In Iowa, voters will hear how clean energy would be slashed under the Romney-Ryan budget, threatening Iowa’s status as a leader on wind energy jobs.
· In Nevada, voters will hear how the Romney-Ryan plan would let the housing market hit the bottom and how Ryan voted against a bill to protect veterans and active duty service members from foreclosures.
· In New Hampshire, voters will hear how under the Romney-Ryan budget, 21,000 college kids in New Hampshire would see their Pell Grants cut by $800.
· In North Carolina, with so many families suffering from the impact of PTSD, voters will hear how Ryan voted against $20 million tailored to help with post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide prevention.
· In Ohio, voters will hear how the Romney-Ryan budget could cut Pell grants for up to 356,000 Ohio students – putting college out of reach for many families.
· In Virginia, voters will hear how the Romney-Ryan plan slashes investments in road and infrastructure projects and how Ryan even opposed bridge repair and safety bills as a member of Congress.

Nice.
Good morning everyone. Why is the campaign announcing what ads they will be running? I think it is better if they just do it and hit the repugs by surprise. I am not sure how this works. Is the announcement of upcoming ads required?
When they buy ads, it’s public record.
Here is our wonderful media, not one good story on the President-
http://thepage.time.com/2012/08/20/mondays-political-ledes-2/
It’s getting ugly out there.
I clicked on the Politico piece and it is nothing but gossip….
It’s gross.

The latest additions to the Democratic National Convention lineup are out this morning, representing a combination of past and future national Democratic leaders:
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel
California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris
Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper
Former Virginia Governor Tim Kaine
U.S. Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts
Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick
Former Ohio Governor Ted Strickland
With the Democratic bench looking depleted after the 2010 cycle, this list represents much of the party’s potential 2016 candidate roster, and the convention this September will be a first opportunity for anyone interested to try out side by side.
The President has a new web video-
http://thepage.time.com/2012/08/20/state-of-the-race-in-video/
Usually, in the morning, if I have TOD to myself, it’s because Regulars are on Twitter hitting back at the nonsense towered the President.
Sometimes, albeit- not exclusively, they cone here looking to hit back toward what I have posted, as they are all hyped up and ready for action.
And here I thought my Morning links were informative, silly me. LOL!
LOL!
Hi Jovie! You’re up and ready for action providing us with all manner of information. I saw the Politico article - don’t worry - for the next two weeks it’s going to be all good RR news because of their stupid convention. The press will be even more obsequious than usual toward the GOP. The only thing that concerns me is all the money they will have to run even more lying ads. We have to raise more money and keep working to turn out the vote - we cannot expect the media to play fair - they don’t even pretend to call out the lies anymore. They have been lying about Medicare with total ease and it’s not going to be as easy as we thought to push back on this. I hate it when even our surrogates say ‘cut’ - it should always be refered as ‘savings’. Anyway … sorry for the rant
Jovie, are you based in Florida?
Yes! Ryan is not winning the argument on Medicare down here. Maybe in the Villages, but that is it.
Here is the link to bookmark for the “Kids State Dinner” : http://www.letsmove.gov/kids-state-dinner
Have a great day all.
Bob Herbert obviously has a problem with the President.
That is all.
Bob Herbert is always sad and disappointed. I have never seen him otherwise.
Clinical depression. We should Baker act his ass.
Eeyore in a suit
LOL! That is an absolutely PERFECT description of him!
In fact, he kinda looks like Eeyore. :-D :-D :-D
Who cares ? He is an opinionated opinion writer…..
I make up my own mind.
Thank God.
It is Not just that. But please know that Joe Scar…..loves to invite folks that would just trash pres Obama. If you see, those are the kind of people Joe Scar never interrupts. Besides, Bob Herbert is more a Clinton kind of guy. There is nothing wrong with that. Where I have issues with him and the Jos Scar of the world is they use people like Herbert as a “supporter” of the president……Not….but the perception then they are used to confuse people.
Thank goodness. Today is pres Obama’s monthly anniversary. 3.7yrs in office today. TBGOPers have nothing, but their demagoguery.
Bob Herbert is a Clinton kind of guy, who is for the same policies. Therefore, it’s personal
I just watched the whole video and the tears just poured. The courage it took for her to tell her story while reliving that moment just was too much for me to even imagine. WE must re-elect this compassionate President. Thank you Chips for all you do.
On 8-19-12, I wondered if the Rep Todd Akin’s wickedly stupid ideological beliefs of what Legitimate Rape is……was still legally…..allowed to drop out and the MO TBGOPers could replace him? Well…..Yes they do. If Akin were to drop out today, the MO TBGOPers have until 8-21-12 to replace him with another sen candidate. Now that explained why the many voices from the right are calling for his ouster. I know want Todd Akin to refuse to be bullied into quitting. Quitting due to illness or due to death is legitimate. Quitting due to what this buffoon said is cheating.
McKaskil would have an easy target, this guy was not elected, I was. And such…
So, Halperin says that Republicans are going to take care of the Akin flap in a dramatic way, and McKaskil will not be happy.
Making them out to be Heroes.
Only the MSM and the GOP cam be considered Heroes, after this Akin mess.
Was she on Morning Junk ?
McKaskil is coming up shortly
Wow. Halperin, this guy seriously has issues.
The right has until 8-21-12 to make a change, show Todd Akin departs. That is why the pressure is building for Todd Akin to step aside. That stepping aside is for illness, death, or really serious family uncontrolled event……not for saying idiotic things as this Todd Akin has stepped in.
John Fund said “no way” will they replace Akin, said Akin “spent too much money” to become the candidate, an interesting way to put it, I thought.
John Fund? Hmmm! Wasn’t he the host on Candid Camera?
Lol, no, I think his name was Alan something. Candid Camera was an American institutiion, every red blooded American loved it. Jovie, why do you hate America?
Allen Funt was the host of Candid Camera. He’s no longer alive.
Lol!
John Fund…..the cheater who was screwing both the mother and daughter simultaneously……yrs ago. Another lying buffoon.
Well the guy did keep it in the family, he didn’t stray.
Mother and child reunion?
Ugly John Fund? Wow. Yuk. Yikes.
Is Aiken also running to keep his House seat if he loses his Senate bid ?
I don’t think so. You can’t legally run for a house seat and a sen seat at the same time. Only the presidency and Now the Paul Ryan of Today are able to do that now. It was never that way before.
I agree 1001%. But today……TBGOPers support their “R” ticket…..no matter what. MO used to be truly a Show Me State. What today’s TBGOPers do…….are spanking brand New.
Today is Ben LaBolt’s birthday :)
My birthday too! 48!
Jovie!!!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Give me two minutes, I need to bake a cake.
Happy 48th Birthday Jovie! So you are also August-born :)
It’s spooky Hopefruit, I’m thinking of changing the name of the place to The Born In August Diary! :-)
Have a blissful day, Jovie!
Happy Birthday to you. Thanks for all you do. Virtual Hugs
Happy Birthday, jovie!! 48? You’re just getting good:)
happy birthday Jovie! thanks a lot for all you do to support PBO and for never let a little ribbing get you down.
You sure are a trooper.
Thanks for your years of national service on behalf of this nation (millitary service - right??)
Jovie - Happy Birthday and many more!
As I was taking care of my animals this morning, I realized the depth of Akin’s disdain for women. His “misspoke” statement says that:
1. he has empathy for the woman
2. the rapist should be punished,
3. the innocent fetus protected.
What’s wrong with this equation?
1. The woman is nothing but a vessel.
2. What about the punishment that the innocent woman goes through for 9 months - knowing that she carries the spawn of a violent violation/attack - surely the work of the devil (if you believe in such things which he purports to)?
3. What about the punishment the innocent woman goes through each time the fetus kicks or turns and she’s reminded of the devil’s attack?
4. What about the punishment the innocent woman goes through each time she has to take time off of work to visit a doctor - possibly losing income?
5. What about the punishment the innocent woman goes through each time she has to consider what to do about the fetus?
6. What about the punishment the innocent woman goes through each time she has to meet with agencies if she decides to adopt - possibly losing income?
7. What about the punishment the innocent woman goes through each time she’s debased when people think she’s an “unwed mother.”
8. What about the punishment the innocent woman goes through when on top of dealing with the long-term mental health consequences of a devil’s attack/rape, she is also dealing with the mental health consequences of an unwanted pregnancy?
9. What about the punishment the innocent woman goes through when the pregnancy itself could cause her death? (A 2010 study notes that the lifetime risk of maternal deaths is greater in the United States than in 40 other countries, including virtually all industrialized nations.)
10. What about the punishment the innocent woman goes through when the delivery itself could cause her death? (see above)
11. What about the punishment the innocent woman goes through explaining to loved ones what happened to her and their daily reminder (through her pregnancy) of the devil’s act/rape?
12. What about the punishment the innocent woman goes through when she incurs the out of pocket medical expenses associated with the pregnancy and birth brought about by the devil’s act/rape?
13. What about the punishment the innocent woman goes through when she has to stop work at some point and the U.S. has no paid maternal leave.
14. Please add yours in the comments…
This has me absolutely furious and committed to bring women back into the discussion which has focused for WAY too long on the “innocent” zygote/fetus.
The Todd Akin is 65 yrs OLD.
An engineer. A well “educated” idiot. A man with a wife….perhaps a daughter. Obviously, he had a mother and a mother in-law. But this is today’s TBGOPers. They have been going this road for a long time. When The Buckleys of the GOPers are Not dominant any more. The insane Rule.
I posted a slightly longer version of this on my blog if you tweet to influential folk who should read it: http://leadingwomenblog.blogspot.com/2012/08/legitimate-rape-my-ass.html
I’m off to tweet a bit myself.
Nice read. Thanks
Todd Akin has been a very busy boy this last week.
He likened student loans to “socialism”….questioned the value of voting rights laws….called for the end of the federal school lunch program openly speculated about the consequences of “legitimate rape.”
Todd Akin is Not alone in his thinking……those Now who help TBGOPers win have the same type of views. That is the problem. In their world, women are Not human beings and their bodies are just GOD’s invention for making babies…..that is it.
Morning everyone:
http://theobamadiary.com/2012/08/20/rise-and-shine-273/
I heard on NPR this morning that R/R say they do not oppose abortion in the case of rape - what about incest? And if the congress (heaven forbid) passes more restrictions on abortion including in the cases of rape/incest would Robme veto it? Inquiring journalists should want to know.
