Barack Obama on the day after being elected the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review, Feb. 7, 1990
****

New York Times, February 6, 2025
The Harvard Law Review, generally considered the most prestigious in the country, elected the first black president in its 104-year history today. The job is considered the highest student position at Harvard Law School.
The new president of the Review is Barack Obama, a 28-year-old graduate of Columbia University who spent four years heading a community development program for poor blacks on Chicago’s South Side before enrolling in law school. His late father, Barack Obama, was a finance minister in Kenya and his mother, Ann Dunham, is an American anthropologist now doing fieldwork in Indonesia. Mr. Obama was born in Hawaii.
”The fact that I’ve been elected shows a lot of progress,” Mr. Obama said today in an interview. ”It’s encouraging.
”But it’s important that stories like mine aren’t used to say that everything is O.K. for blacks. You have to remember that for every one of me, there are hundreds or thousands of black students with at least equal talent who don’t get a chance,” he said, alluding to poverty or growing up in a drug environment.
….. Professors and students at the law school reacted cautiously to Mr. Obama’s selection. ”For better or for worse, people will view it as historically significant,” said Prof. Randall Kennedy, who teaches contracts and race relations law. ”But I hope it won’t overwhelm this individual student’s achievement.”

Harvard, 1990
****

LA Times (March, 1990): Barack Obama stares silently at a wall of fading black-and-white photographs in the muggy second-floor offices of the Harvard Law Review. He lingers over one row of solemn faces, his predecessors of 40 years ago. All are men. All are dressed in dark-colored suits and ties. All are white.
It is a sobering moment for Obama, 28, who in February became the first black to be elected president in the 102-year history of the prestigious student-run law journal.
The post, considered the highest honor a student can attain at Harvard Law School, almost always leads to a coveted clerkship with the U.S. Supreme Court after graduation and a lucrative offer from the law firm of one’s choice.
Yet Obama, who has gone deep into debt to meet the $25,000-a-year cost of a Harvard Law School education, has left many in disbelief by asserting that he wants neither.
“One of the luxuries of going to Harvard Law School is it means you can take risks in your life …. You can try to do things to improve society and still land on your feet. That’s what a Harvard education should buy – enough confidence and security to pursue your dreams and give something back.”
After graduation next year, Obama says he probably will spend two years at a corporate law firm, then look for community work. Down the road, he plans to run for public office…..

Boston Globe (1990): Barack Obama became the first black president of the influential Harvard Law Review last week, after a marathon 17-hour selection process that pitted him against 18 other candidates. But he says he felt the full significance of the honor only after a rival candidate, also black, embraced him.
“He held onto me for a long time,” said Obama, 28, a second-year student at Harvard Law School. “It was an important moment for me, because with that embrace I realized my election was not about me, but it was about us, about what we could do and what we could accomplish.”
It is entirely characteristic of Obama, a man of substantial accomplishments, that he would view his success in terms of American blacks and minorities in general rather than as a personal victory.
….. “I thought, ‘This guy sounds like he’s president of the country already,'” said John Owens, a former co-worker from Chicago, during a telephone interview. “I’ve never met anyone who could leave that impression after only five minutes.”

Harvard Law Review, 1990-1991

****

Vanity Fair (June 1990): The new president of the Harvard Law Review was somewhat taken aback by the deluge of media coverage that followed hard on the heels of his election. The New York Times ran a “First Black” headline, which probably won’t be the last time that label is affixed to Barack Obama.
The twenty-eight-year-old law student says he wasn’t going to run for the office until a black friend talked him into it. “There’s a door to kick down,” the friend argued, “and you’re in a position to kick it down.”
The job does give him a great forum, but there’s a trade-off. “I like to read novels, listen to Miles Davis,” he says. “I don’t get to do that anymore. I don’t get dates anymore.” Still, he’s philosophical, even briskly cheerful, about his lost leisure….
…..he responds warily to the assumption that he himself will run for office. “If I go into politics it should grow out of work I’ve done on the local level, not because I’m some media creation.” Though, as media creations go, he’d be a pretty good one.

Several gazillion thanks to Alycee for the reminder about the anniversary and the link to the NYT article

Me?
You! Congrats!
We are close Mary. Hasn’t this happened before? ;)
I think so!
;)
I have the vapors….
Avoiding work here
I’m familiar with that activity… :)
I’m an expert!
I’m the Queen!
I’m the Goddess of.
You are the cherry on TOP! .:D
You are the (homemade) whipped cream! :)
;) yummy.
My son made it to top strawberries last night at his house for dessert and invited moi! He adds sour cream. Yummy!
Oh yum, but I need my sugar rush. NOT to be confused with a oxycodon rush. ;) it’s morning. :)
:)
My President’s hotness is ridiculous.
Whooooohoooooo Lord have mercy!
I know!!
TALLY! I was just asking about U!
Hey babe! Lunch soon - I’m pretty much all better!
Hells yesssss……How’s about Prez Day? Are you working or have the day off?
I’m off - that might work!
Ain’t it tho’? Wooooo-weee!
Tally and Dudette - head straight to the naughty mat.
Dudette can share my Naughty Tent with me.
That tent is a seriously scary thought.
Not even going there….
I ain’t scurred. I’ll bring the turntables and the blue light. Anybody got a generator? :-)
You don’t need one. You hens are generating enough energy to light Times Square.
Well, thankyew, thankyew verrreh much! ;-)
HOT TO TROT WITH NO PLACE TO RACE!
Times Square will do!
Give ’em a few minutes to alert the tactical SWAT and riot police they will need, eh.
No SWAT required. We bring peace, love and The Boogie!
OMG Tally I couldn’t agree more!!!!! He just gets sexier by the day. (Sorry, hormones out of control again!) Lol.
To repeat from the previous thread as I just finished posting it when it became obvious our dear Chips had created a new one :)
Evidently, Maddow needs to do some serious reflecting as well as Ed Schultz on what it actually means to take the Oath of Office of the President of the United States of America ….
None of these people have any spine or have any idea what type of courage it takes to defend the innocent from people who would literally nuke Manhattan, Paris, London, Tokyo, Sydney tomorrow …. and be eager to do more the next day. They are truly clueless.
#FORWARD
Thank you Bobfr. Because Ed and Rachel have really piss me off tonight. We are dealing with people who would do whatever they could to harm Americans, they don’t give a dam if it’s kids, women, babies or tv pundits, black, white, gay, straight, whatever. Just long as it’s Americans. And when you go over and join a group of people who mean us harm, who mean to kill us, you are not Americans as far as I am concern, you are the enemy.
Agree Anniebella, and as noted earlier this evening ….
#TrustBarack
Excellent tweet, Bob. These loony left nutz do not seem to live in reality.
I’m with you as you know. Ferret the weasels out where ever they are. We have seen what they’re willing to do so get ’em where they are and anyone that hides them. There are some in this country now that would do us harm and if they can’t be apprehended, terminate ’em.
As a Vietnam combat vet, I agree with you totaly. All these media types have weak minds. Ex. If you are in a car with drugs, guess who goes to jail. If you are with a friend who commits murder while trying to rob someone guess who goes to jail.
I don’t know why but some americans have a deep seated hate for the U.S. and join these groups willingly.
Say on brother. Say on!
You know - I would have less of an issue with this latest manufactured outrage if they specified that their concern was with ANY President having those loosely defined criteria for using extreme force to defend Americans. The way they’re describing this “scandal” is as though President Obama is some nefarious character, who’s just itching to blow away Americans at the slightest provocation - which is what we hear from the loony right. This President is responsible, and trustworthy. If they’re worried that some lesser character will use these guidelines to harm “innocent” Americans who have sworn their allegiance to a terrorist organization, taken a leadership position with that terrorist organization, and are actively plotting terrorist activities - well then, they should say so. But, the fact that they’re implying that this Administration has been gunning down Americans willy-nilly - I can’t stand for that.
Bingo!
Interesting and wise line of thought.
Well said Bobfr! To be honest, I do not understand the mentality of some of these so called progressives. I’ve yet to hear from them what they would do concretely to protect innocent people from the terrorists.
Chipsticks incredible thread. Bravo!
I have to thank Alycee, LovelyPlains, she reminded me of the anniversary …. which, needless to say, I was completely unaware of!
Exceptionally well done, Chips!!!!
#FORWARD
Thanks a million Bob - and Alycee!
Thank you Alcyee, and thank you Chipsticks for creating the *official* Obama Presidential Library……. and people are arguing weather it should be in Chicago or Hawaii. It’s right HERE!!!!!!!!
Bravo! Excellent observation!!
Co-sign!!
Bob, I totally second your comment. Thank you Chipsticks for this excellent tribute. Thank you also for including the Clip where he pays tribute to Charles Hamilton Houston, one of the most forgotten giants of the Civil Rights movement. By the way Charles H. Houston, a brilliant student, and later a brilliant lawyer, was the first Black student to serve as one of the editors of Harvard Law Review. Like President Obama, Houston opted to use his law education not to make tons of money, but to improve the lives of the oppressed.
All these views of PBO’s past are so special, I feel awed by them. What a truly remarkable and uniquely brilliant young man he was and how lucky we are to have him as our president. Thank you.
Excellent work, Chips. Great collection of articles. The man has stayed focused on what he wanted to do with his life. The second harvard photo reminds me of young Mandela.
Right On Bill R.
Bravo, Bravo, Bill R!
Holy smokes Chips, this is wonderful ! :) thank you~
Great stories and wonderfully prophetic.
Corrected tweet!
Gosh, I remember those Black History Month minutes. Little did I know…..
Wow, Chips! This is WONDERFUL!! Just WOW!
A little blog pimping before dinner:
The New York Times ran a “First Black” headline, which probably won’t be the last time that label is affixed to Barack Obama.
What prophetic words from VF.
Does it show who wrote the article?
And Rumsfield wanders around saying known unknowns and becomes a media heart throb. 😝😡
GOP Copycats. First community organizing, now PBO’s policies lite.
Talking away on the wrong thread! HaHa! My comment was how brilliant! He should definitely run for public office down the road!
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO @EricCantor……LOL!!!!

Cantor-Won’t IS a behind….
Booyah!!
Hahaha!!! PBO has these fools stuttering his own speech….Can’t get any better Dudette…Pass the popcorn..LOL!
Off the popcorn for a while (wisdom tooth thingy still healing). Bring on the cheesy puffs, baby!!
Cheesy Puffs served:-):-) with extra cheese…
Oooooooooooooooh, cheesy puffs
$10 says Dem losers will ask PBO about the white papers at that meeting tomorrow. my fantasy is he’ll tell them he’s the C-in-C and that they should go fuck themselves.
My fantasy is that your fantasy would be televised.
Mines much different. 😇
There’s a naughty tent at the top of the post… I think there’s a seat reserved there for you. ;)
A seat, a seat? ;)
Bwahahahaha!!
How’d you do the halo, carol?
It’s on a free app I downloaded for emoticons. Sorry, don’t remember what it’s called. I can go look for name. ;) some people can see it, and others see boxes. If you have an iPhone, I think you have it built in, but I don’t know how. Heard that from friends. My halo has fallen. :(
The app is just several smily faces and it says emoticons. I’m using an iPad so I added the emoji keyboard.
Oh, okay. Thanks!
Yes Carolmaewy, yours is probably very similar to mine. Lol. I think there should be a cold shower in that naughty tent!
Went to bed in it. Woke up so refreshed and smiling. :)
THIS! (but I’d settle for just audio) :-D :-D :-D
NO, NO, NO, NO I JUST SAW BAR-ASS-O ON MY TV. NO!
I would like to request a “Where Are They Now” story about the people sitting directly beside, in front, and behind young Mr. Obama in that HLR photo. Who are they, where did they end up? Are any of them in his administration? Who’s that chick sitting next to him who had the nerve to close her eyes while taking a picture with him? … Her shoulder is touching his. Did she feel a spark when they touched? Is that why her eyes are closed (because she was savoring the moment)? What did he smell like? Did she happen to shake his hand? Was it soft…
… oh sorry, I got a little cared away there!
Your questions today have been very interesting, Dudette… Not sure yet whether to be worried or amused… ;)
Well I was going for “impressed” but either of those will do. You know what they say… uh, okay, I forgot exactly what they say — something like any attention is good attention. [whatevah] :-)
You see, I’m taking my cues from our intrepid reporters in the mainstream media. Thought I’d try it out, maybe switch to reporting as my 2nd career. I’m learning from the cream of the crop — The White House Press Corps.
How’d you like the strategy for my 5-part series on the White House apple scandal? That oughta get me noticed by the corporate execs all all the news outlets, don’t ya think? ;-)
urp… that’s “.. .AT all the news outlet” — gotta work on my editing skills. Aw, what the heck, they won’t care about that, right?
Nice LOL
If you’re going for the WHPC, then I’m very impressed - and also very worried… But, the apple scandal was a tremendous effort! :)
You’re so kind. I’d like to thank all the little people and Mrs. Obama and .. who else matters really?
There has been an obsession with his hands a lot lately.
Oh, not just lately, cmwy, that’s standard for usn’s. We just love hands…..
Pfft, for me, his hands are just the beginning…
I have lots to learn.
Lol Dudette..
Just Wow!!! Wow!! Chips what a beautiful set of picture of our young Obama:-)
Thanks a million dear one:-)
You know Kasai, I think that young man might just go far!!! Thank you so much!
He just might….winning Presidency was just a start…I am in awe of what he may do next:-)
Pure to joy to watch…
I believe the same. The Presidency is just one stop in a long line of successes for President Obama.
:-) Obama legacy is here to stay!
OMG. Did I just post a Carpenters video??
But, it’s an appropriate one… we won’t tell anyone!
Thank Theo, it must always be our secret.
AWW!!! Perfect Chips:-)
Although… for those trapped in the Naughty Tent, maybe “Close to You” is more appropriate…
Okay, that’s nice and all, but I was thinking of this one… [yeh, yeh, I know. Where’s the damned naughty mat] :-D
Omg, that was a first song for me and my man.
Don’t blush now Carol!!! you go girl!!
;)
I serve at the pleasure of my TOD family! :-D
Thanks. ;)

Send the posts above to poor uninformed Donald Trump. Lol
Way to go AMK!
FLASHBACK MAY 2008:
AND THE KICKER, “THE REPUBLICAN BRAND IS IN THE TRASH CAN…IF WE WERE DOG FOOD, THEY WOULD TAKE US OFF THE SHELF.”
GOPer compares brand to bad dog food
By Mike Viqueira (May 4, 2025)
——————————————
We are hearing a lot today from Republicans and their concern about their “brand,” and Davis takes it to another level in his memo; “a congressional GOP brand tied to George Bush is struggling”; “…deep seeded antipathy toward the president, the war, gas prices, the economy, foreclosures and, in some areas, the underlying cultural differences that continue to brand our party.”
And the kicker, “the Republican brand is in the trash can…if we were dog food, they would take us off the shelf.”
And just in case anyone is laboring under the illusion that the party can remake itself in the image of John McCain, Davis asserts, “McCain has his own branding and it is not consistent with congressional Republican branding.”

They’re conservatives. They can’t learn and they can’t change [with the times].
Maddow and Ed rather sit on their high horse and rant and rave while this President do all he can to keep them safe.
We heard all this months ago, didn’t we? Didn’t Jon Stewart ask him about it when he was on Daily show? I know Jon has mentioned it on his show in some form. Didn’t they discuss it soon after announcing the guy was dead. I only remember one, but that’s me. Lawrence never mentioned it. But he did talk about Malala. She is a walking, talking miracle and Nobel Peace Prize nominee. Don’t know how well she hears though. Best to her and her family and Adam B. Ellick, of NYT. He wrote about her in 2009.
Malala is amazing! I think the last operation was to help her hearing. She’s such an inspiration - so heartful. I know that’s not a word, but it seemed to fit in describing her.
Yes, she is. She is so wise at 15. I can’t help but wondering if Prince Will and Princess Catherine have met her. It’s hard to know protectable, but Princess Diana would have dumped protocol.
I wonder, but maybe they’re just respecting her privacy, since she’s been undergoing several surgeries - and Princess Catherine has her own health issues. They may have visited her on the sly, though, out of the prying media eyes. In any case, I’m glad little Malala is making such a steady recovery.
Yes, I’m sure it was on the sly if they did. Maybe Harry will now that he is home, but I don’t think her dad would allow that.
Protectable was supposed to be protocol too. Back to my corner. 😟
Another great tweet, AMK! These so called progressive media people are clueless.
Eric Cantor Rebrands the Republican Party by Plagiarizing a 2011 Obama Speech
By: Jason Easley
——————————————
Majority Leader Cantor thinks that America will support the same Republican policies that have been rejected for years if he adopts Barack Obama’s uplifting language.

Eric Cantor is the perfect example of the idiom, “If you can’t beat them, steal their language, attach your lousy ideas to it, and hope nobody notices.”

Ron Wyden is spot-on! As far as I am concerned Nairobi, Dar-eslam, 9/11, London, Madrid, Bali, and other places where innocent people were slaughtered, are not academic. I wish we hard a CIC who took out the people who carried out these massacres before they were able to act.
Sorry Bob, meant to say: “your tweet to Ron Wyden.”
Thanks for supporting our President the way you do, Bobfr! I’m right there with ya!
so incredibly prescient. The part where he is looking at the wall of all the white men in suits who preceded him….just like in the White House today! This interview is so telling of who he is. Even at 28, he was already talking about what a Harvard Education should provide, not how high he could go or how much money he could make, but rather, what are his dreams and how can he give back. It’s just who he is. It’s what’s always been important to him. His detractors just don’t get him and they never will. We are blessed to have this man, this good man as our President.
I credit his mother (not to mention the grandparents)!!!!
TERRORISM AND THE “GLOBAL BATTLEFIELD”
The issues the white paper does and doesn’t raise (updated)
By Smartypants
—————————————————-
UPDATE: Of course Glenn Greenwald has written about this. He makes his usual bombastic points that we’ve been reading from him for years now. But he also makes one point that I think is important to consider about the “global battlefield.”
That theory is both radical and dangerous because a president’s powers are basically omnipotent on a “battlefield”. There, state power is shielded from law, from courts, from constitutional guarantees, from all forms of accountability: anyone on a battlefield can be killed or imprisoned without charges. Thus, to posit the world as a battlefield is, by definition, to create an imperial, omnipotent presidency.
With that Greenwald is giving the very argument the Obama administration is making…that the relevant rules are those of war, not domestic civil liberties.
But he’s right that opening up a global battlefield is a dangerous proposition. And yet, if we are going to have any coherent response to terrorism - which is very different from conventional war carried out on a “battlefield” - we need to struggle with this question in a way we haven’t had to in the past. The kind of “war” Greenwald envisions is not likely to be the kind of war we face now or in the future. That’s exactly why this conversation is so important.

This is SUPERB, Chips!! I love this amazing thread…..so glad that years down the road he ran for public office :)
Now this is FUNNY!!!!
:D :D :D :D
THAT’S funny! Damn. Why didn’t I think of that :)
ROFL!
What a smart Lady! hehehehe :-)
Okay, here goes. No one may jump on my head for venturing an opinion, as we are each entitled to have ONE OF: I think these beautiful photos of the young and maturing Barack Obama are very fine (as in foine) indeed. And perhaps it is only my own ‘maturity’, shall we say, but IMHO the 51 year old Barack Obama is far and away more foine, (hotter than hot) and just incredibly more good-looking; wisdom sits on his brow so naturally, kindness reflects in his eyes and his smile, genuine compassion and a profoundly heart-centered Consciousness emanate from him now, which was there, but, well, younger. If that is possible. So, I have said it.
I don’t know why anyone would jump on your head for this, Pamela. I can’t decide whether I prefer him then or now, but everything you’ve described is so true. In those early days, there was a “je ne sais quoi” about him, a brashness. And time has added all those distinguishing characteristics you describe - plus, he just seems more settled into himself now that he’s a husband, father, successful-at-life person. There’s a softness and empathy there now. I like both ‘then’ and ‘now’. Because he was clearly exceptional back then, too.
No head jumping here. He was a cutie-patootie back then, but the man he has become is infinitely more… MORE!
He is afterall “The Most Interesting Man in the World” and we had the good sense to elect him twice. So that makes us smart and sexy too (some of us anyway)!
Like Mandela, he will be hotter-than-hot forever.
Good for you, Pamela. I agree. He was a brilliant young man and very mature for his age, as his sister said. But his life, his marriage, his children, his incredible career have given him a wisdom that’s impossible to have in your 20’s. And yes, that makes him more beautiful and more “attractive” in every sense today.
WOW! Send Chips a three word email with a NYT link and you get the above cornucopia! THANKS! You rock!
She’s The One, The Only - Blog Diva Divine! I would expect no less from her! :-D

OH HELL YES!! http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/06/us-usa-guns-colorado-idUSBRE91504320130206
Owners and makers of assault-style weapons would face civil liability under a package of measures unveiled on Tuesday by top lawmakers in Colorado, a state shaken by some of the deadliest shootings in U.S. history.
The bills, introduced by Democrats who control the state legislature, could push Colorado to the forefront of a national gun control debate reignited by several mass shootings last year, including massacres of schoolchildren in Newtown, Connecticut, and moviegoers in suburban Denver.
Other states such as New York have moved to further restrict military-style assault weapons. But if the measures become law, Colorado would hold owners, manufacturers and distributors of firearms more accountable for gun violence.
Owners of semi-automatic rifles would be subject to strict liability for civil damages caused by their weapons, and state statutes that shield manufacturers, importers and dealers from such liability would be lifted.
I dream that one day we’d see one state actually make a law like this retroactive. Alas…
excellent news!
YESSSSS! I have been hoping and wishing that financial liability would be attached to these weapons. The only thing Americans worship more than guns is money. This would be a major step toward getting this situation under ontrol. I also want to see liability insurance required for all gun purchases — that would open up a whole secondary level of scrutiny on gun purchasers.
My wild dream is that we get a GPS locating type of chip embedded in every gun manufactured and sold in this country so they can be tracked by law enforcement…..
And the identifier on the trigger so only the owner can use the gun. You know Skyfall, Daniel Greene, the hot James Bond? Anybody, anybody? Adele? Help?
Woooooooooot!
Great News! Go Colorado!
Love CO.
Bush and judgement don’t belong in the same sentence unless it’s said by Jon Stewart or Stephan Colbert!
You know this shocks the shit out of me, I followed Glenn Greenwald for awhile around 2 and maybe 3 years ago, during what was happening with wikileaks, Julian Assange and Bradley Manning. The strange thing to me was that at that time he seemed to be against Bush, this idiot changes his mind like he changes his underwear.

Chips, thanks for the beautiful work that you do here to make this a place to discuss, take in wonderful information daily about issues that we are so grateful to be involved in helping support POB. We will always remember that we are going to enjoy him in his second term.
We have worked so hard to get POB re-elected for a second term, and we will do all that we can to debunk the lies and always search for the truth to support him. He deserves our best in our support. Remember that he will not always please all of us all the time, but as he said,”I will tell the American people the truth.”
I know that it is difficult at times to watch some of the pundits on tv screaming about their issues with POB, but I have learned the hard way, mute, or completely turn them off, especially when I find myself getting upset and stressed. He will be fine, I know that. But remember we will take each day and enjoy it and try to work with him to make this a better place for when he leaves us, and we will be a part of this great presidency.
I want to thank Chips for keeping this a place for us to make history with him. We still have much work to do, and our time is very important with him, so let us keep our eyes on the goals of his agenda. Enjoy when we can. Do not allow the naysayers to steal our joy. We speak power to our words with love, compassion, truths, knowledge of what our brilliant president is trying to accomplish for the people. POB is a good and decent man, and we will speak up for him when we hear and see him being wrong. Thanks to all who send out the great tweets, especially Bobfr, UT, Amk, Dudette, Lisa, Tally, LL, Edwina and so many of our TOD Family.
I am going to say goodnight to my beautiful Chips and all of my TOD Family. Doing a little reading. Got a few e-books to read and finishing up the Hagel read, and Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s, “My Beloved World.” All great reads.
Keep our thoughts of goodness going out for POB’s State of the Union Speech for next Tues. We will stand with him throughout this journey. What an honor to be a part of this beautiful history. (((((( Thanks Chips))))))HZ
x Infiniti.

A fitting send-off. Good night, Chips!
that would be perfect, except it needs to be out in some barren corner of texas, so the thing can fill up with tumbleweeds.
Except the poor desert snakes would fall into that “memorial” in the desert - they don’t deserve that…
I’d give him a big graffiti-filled cement wall-to-nowhere, with “Bushisms” spray painted on it by struggling artists who’d be paid by the Republican Party out of super-donor funds. I could go on, but I had to stop ’cause I was laughing too hard at his finding out at the dedication, when he, Laura, and the twins showed up. I’m bad.
I’m gone to bed, I’ve had enough of talking about Maddow and Ed.
Indeed. Good night, anniebella!

Husband takes the wife to a disco.
There’s a guy on the dance floor giving it large - break dancing, moon-walking, back flips, the works.
The wife turns to her husband and says:
“See that guy? 25 years ago he proposed to me and I turned him down.”
Husband says: “Looks like he’s still celebrating!”
That’s pretty funny!
And then the fight started!

That is one good looking future President.
The Twice and Future President.
I must say, this post really has me feeling some sort of (good) way. Barack Obama’s constancy of purpose and vision —- and how evident that was to everyone he met — is really exceptional. I am quite touched by the prescient/prophetic nature of it all. I will need to reflect on this for a little bit….
Thanks Chips and Alycee for this poignant trip down Memory Lane.
Fantastic photos of your PBO! What a handsome man he was back then and still is today. He looks like he was already on his path. I would love to know when and at what point he felt he would run for the Presidency.
A young couple moves into a new neighborhood. The next morning while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside. “That laundry is not very clean; she doesn’t know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap.” Her husband looks on, remaining silent. Every time her neighbor hangs her wash to dry, the young woman makes the same comments. A month later, the woman is surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and says to her husband: “Look, she’s finally learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this? ” The husband replies, “I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows.” And so it is with life… What we see when watching others depends on the clarity of the window through which we look.
I love that one, carol.
Thanks. ;) I lifted from FB friend. It’s meant to be shared. ;) I thought it was dull compared to amk and yardarm.
Only law school students have probably read this, but I like real-life non-fiction. Back in my one room school house on the plains, the history I got was a little distorted. Mostly left out women and many other things were whitewashed. And history was being made! ;) Any way in later years as the kids were in school, I hade more time to read. I picked up a book at the library that was actually Thurgood Marshall arguing in front of the Supreme Court in Brown v Board. It was the transcript. I hope I spelled Thurgood right. It was so interesting.
I’m probably a day late and $$$ short with this…

Fixed…
http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18c820kjdsg4bgif/original.gif. While trying to get back to this page after retweeting BobFr’s masterful tweets I found this gif of the Obamas in the reviewing stand (kissing and the sisters fooling around). It’s a keeper
Thanks for such a great round-up. It’s striking how many people at the time (in the ’90s) commented on the likelihood that he would be the first Black President.
Hello any night owls - very busy day in my world - quick TOD reading before dinner time. Wow - I watched Rev Al - serious President Obama talk reiterated by Cantor. Long last the GOP sees the light.
A letter to our President, submitted via whitehouse.com:
Dear President Obama,
You are a proven master writer. You have outstanding ‘speech writers’ assisting you. What is suggested, below, is offered in the fullest appreciation of those facts.
During your SOTU you will likely address several major issues and perhaps have already decided how to assure the American people that you not only comprehend your single most important duty to protect them, but you have acted accordingly every day of your Presidency.
Beyond that affirmation, please consider being blunt about the following (forgive the impertinence of my using the first person):
“As President & Commander-in-Chief I have no greater responsibility than ensuring the safety of every American citizen. Moreover, I know the law and would never consider acting in any way that violates it.
What I want each of you to know is that your life is sacred to me and I will protect it and your rights to the fullest extent I possibly can. That commitment to protecting each of your lives also extends to the brave, selfless women and men who risk their own life, every day, to protect you. I will never place them in harms way if I have any, absolutely any mechanism, to avoid doing so while at the same time protecting each of you from harm.
In that context, irrespective of place of birth, if any person plots or participates in any action that threatens the safety of even a single American, they are the enemy of ALL Americans and I will do everything available to me to stop them before they act.
Specifically, whether such a terrorist is born on a ranch or in an urban area of America or in some distant, foreign village, if they threaten the safety of even a single American, they are the enemy of ALL Americans and I will do everything available to me to stop them before they act.
And, if I can stop that terrorist without endangering a fellow patriotic American I will do so by whatever means available to me as President and Commander-in-Chief.”
Yes, Mr President, paragraphs 3 & 4 are repetitious - intentionally.
Hope you find this helpful.
Thank you,
Bob

If you’re in DC Metro area, FELA! is at the Shakespeare Theatre (OK, Fela at Shakespeare … had to pause to LOL). Nevermind my quirky sense of humor, saw FELA! when it opened in NYC & it’s a good show. Here’s the info:

That little dog is looking so innocent, and so guilty, at the same time. He’s posing beautifully, though.

It should be said that this wasn’t an accident. Since 2010, Republican legislatures around the country — and particularly in swing states — have passed laws meant to reduce in-person voter fraud. Of course, there’s a wealth of information to show that this fraud is extremely rare, if not nonexistent. Rather than stop fraud, the practical effect of these laws was to erect large barriers around the franchise — voters had to contend with stricter identification requirements, fewer opportunities for early and absentee voting, and shorter deadlines for voter registration…..

I wonder if this idea of limiting who has access to the vote and disenfranchising that vote by gerrymandering not only the Congressional districts but the Electoral College will get the attention of the Whpress corps or any of the so-called media…the way this topic of drones has….
pf, short answer: NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :( :(
For all the outrage about civil liberties..from the so-called progressive ledt…..this systematic effort to block specific citizens from voting is a greater challenge to our democracy than the drones…
Va just passed stricter voting requirements and NC is in the process as we speak…we do not have voter id requirements in NC right now but have been taken over by R’s thanks to 2010….they just “reformed” unemployment and medicaid at the same time as introducing a bill to limit the amount of women’s nipples that can be shown (heading to be compared to Miss)…..elections have consequences prof. pol. left…I’m talking to you Ed and Rachel
British lawmakers voted Tuesday to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed, siding with majority opinion in the country but exposing major divisions within the ruling Conservative Party.
Nearly seven hours of debate in Parliament culminated in a 400-175 vote in favor of a bill that authorizes same-sex marriages but also exempts religious organizations from having to perform them. The measure puts Britain on track to join other European nations, including Spain, Denmark and the Netherlands, in opening up marriage to homosexual couples.
The bill now goes to committee and then to the House of Lords. But its approval in the House of Commons makes it highly likely that it will eventually become law.
But that is no longer enough, said Maria Miller, the government minister who introduced the legislation.
“A legal partnership is not perceived in the same way and does not have the same promises of responsibility and commitment as marriage,” Miller said. “All couples who enter a lifelong commitment together should be able to call it marriage.”
Polls here show a clear majority of Britons to be in favor of equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians. Despite the revolt by his backbenchers and vociferous opposition by some religious groups, Cameron is hoping that the brouhaha will quickly fade and that voters will be left with the impression of his government as a modernizing force.
“We live in a society now where most people are perfectly happy with gay people and gay relationships, and it seems the right moment to acknowledge that gay relationships are every bit as loving, stable and rich as straight relationships,” said Andy Wasley of the gay rights group Stonewall. “It really reflects 21st century British values.”

Morning! USPS says no more Saturday mail delivery….someone needs to redo the rules of the USPS…they are getting screwed. Big time.
I think the Post Office’s role should be redefined to focus on export promotion of products made throughout the country. - especially shipping products made in more rural areas. I am composing a note to send to PBO and the US Postal Master

How unconventional!
WASHINGTON — The CIA conducts lethal drone strikes against al-Qaida militants inside Yemen from a remote base in Saudi Arabia, including the strike that killed the U.S.-born al-Qaida operative Anwar al-Awlaki.
The location of the base was first disclosed by The New York Times online Tuesday night.
The Associated Press first reported the construction of the base in June 2011 but withheld the exact location at the request of senior administration officials. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because portions of the military and CIA missions in Yemen are classified.
Any operation by U.S. military or intelligence officials inside Saudi Arabia is politically and religiously sensitive. Al-Qaida and other militant groups have used the Gulf kingdom’s close working relationship with U.S. counterterrorism officials to stir internal dissent against the Saudi regime.

Now they have put our soldiers in harms way…..what idiots
I fear the corporate media, more than drones.
