Oh thank God. Congress step up and the world community. Excellent question to the world Mr President. Phew, he will not be alone. Force everyone to voice their opinions PUBLICLY.
“US President Barack Obama has said he fully respects David Cameron’s approach after Parliament blocked UK involvement in possible military action in Syria.
The men spoke by phone for 15 minutes, and the tone of the conversation was said to be friendly.
The UK prime minister reiterated he still wanted a strong response to the suspected chemical weapons attack. According to Downing Street, Mr Obama said he had not yet decided what action the US would take over Syria.
A Downing Street spokesman said: “The prime minister made clear that he strongly believes in the need for a tough and robust response to the appalling war crime committed by the Assad regime in Ghouta.”
As to the vote by the UK Parliament, from my perspective it was largely motivated by more than a decade of pent up resentment caused by GWB, Cheney et al knowingly lying to the British about Saddam’s WMD capability and intent. I also think that PM Cameron, once a statement of unambiguous assurance that chemical weapons were indeed used, could return to Parliament and request support. Whether he will do so or whether it will even matter is purely hypothetical at this time.
But, the lesson remains - when you lie to your most trusted ally and that ally buries its dead & suffers economic hardship because of your lie, it leaves a mark; a very deep mark.
Clearly, the honor of being asked to address both Houses of Parliament and the incredible reception President Obama received upon doing so, leaves little doubt that he, personally, is admired. I think that admiration extends to Secretary Kerry, as well.
So, the vote is a matter of the consequences of the criminal legacy of GWB & the #NEOCONSTER doctrine of American Exceptionalism, imho.
Yesterday, Secretary Kerry said that the President believed that the American people should be informed directly and that Congress should be consulted before not after taking military action. One can expect, reasonably, that whatever the President has to say today, he is holding true to his word, as he always does. And, releasing the declassified information that the President did yesterday is a demonstration of his commitment to include the American people in an informed conversation.
I gotta tell ya that I’m amazed at these talking heads and past war heros telling us the type of weapons, when they should be fired, etc. The names of all surface vessels are on display. Too much info and the President is late, how dare he! All this really pisses me off.
The President is gonna do what he’s gonna do when he wants and he doesn’t need any “expert” media shills to give him the okay.
Since we are waiting for POTUS and since I posted this after the new thread I hope you don’t mind me bringing it over. I think it’s really big national news that was framed as news just about 2 states.
One major piece of great news is the War on Drugs ended last week. I know that is a big statement but I don’t think any reasonable person could interpret it differently based upon how the Obama admin presented their position on drug enforcement in WA and CO. Most of the news was framed with it just being a ruling on those two states but with a perspective of how it should be viewed more broadly affecting the nation’s War on Drugs below is an excerpt from TPMDC:
“The war on drugs I would expect will end today,” Terry Nelson, a retired U.S. customs and border protection agent who now works with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, which supports legalization, told TPM in a phone interview. “Once the floodgates open, and states see that the federal government is not going to prosecute, then this could be the day that we could say we won this war.”
It should be noted that the Justice Department’s pronouncement represented a fundamental change in how the federal government approaches marijuana only — the trafficking of harder drugs like heroin and cocaine will still likely be as vigorously prosecuted as they are now. But even on those drugs, Holder’s sentencing guidance represents a recent reevaluation in how the federal government views its role.”
I suspect that because PBO will be at the G20 summit next week…I do not think (just a guess really) that anything will happen till he returns home…although he is not scheduled to meet with Putin…anything could happen…esp after Putin’s statement about not being in favor of using CWs
Please pardon me Chips…the Youtube Live……how come they allow a Live Feed, but the Tape is not always ready for redistribution when the Live streaming has concluded?
Hi Nena, usually, but not always, they remove the live video from YouTube because they’re unedited (ie if the event is delayed you have a long ’empty’ part at the start of the video) and they replace them later with the recorded version - it takes a while to upload videos and they’d have to edit first, hence the delay!
JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says it has deployed an “Iron Dome” missile defense battery in the Tel Aviv area. … http://bigstory.ap.org/article/israel-deploys-missile-defense-system-tel-aviv
I have Crystal Palace v. Sunderland on TV right now. Doesn’t seem as if NBC will break into the match for PBO’s statement, so it seems as if it won’t be an announcement of military action.
Morning LL. Mind you, such is the media these days, it wouldn’t surprise me if they stuck with Palace v Sunderland over a major Presidential announcement!
Oh, I hear you. But war is the only thing that sells more than sport, so I believe NBC would suffer the wrath of Paulo di Canio for an announcement of military action.
Well…the president uses teleprompter or not…..is the dig that TBGOPers’ dig…..it goes to show that today, the media does TBGOPers’ bid. They do Not do any reporting any more where Dems and especially where pres Obama is concerned.
Nena, my parents and I were commenting how there is no “news” anymore…it’s all regurgitated crap and theres nothing informative about it. Our local NBC affiliate had a story about how more women are having babies in unusual places…really??? WTF?
And AP not helpful, as usual, giving naysayers more ammunition, as if needed. Their correspondent in Middle East is reporting that rebels, armed with Saudi supplied chem. weapons, were claiming responsibility for the attacks on civilians. It was a question during U.N. briefing today.
Saw an eerie header on the dreaded CNN that Syria is mentioning retaliation against any U.S. strike, that will turn the sea red …
Let’s all keep in mind when the news readers mention cruise missiles and ships and submarines like they are merely “inventory,” that there are real live Sailors and Marines manning our ships and subs, who are brave enough to go into harm’s way, with families monitoring their every move. Unlike what the Republicans want to lead us to believe, the “military” doesn’t just refer to defense dollars on pie charts and the bricks-and-mortar Pentagon or a bunch of tanks and seagoing vessels.
Yup. Take all MSM reports with the appropriate amount of salt. This is all a game to the MSM. I will wait to hear from PBO, and at this point, only what comes from PBO or John Kerry will be my reference point.
— aspirational12 (@aspirational12) August 31, 2025
I am puzzled as to why some people feel that in order to appear objective or “bona fide” they need to in some way, shape, form or the other, express disapproval of PBO - even though they themselves have no idea what they would differently, or cannot explain HOW he has not lived up to their invisible bar (which they set at some arbitrary level that changes as frequently as they change their clothes).
I really liked Sec Kerry’s speech yesterday, in particular to the humanitarian and chemical warfare against any citizens argument. However, I still struggle with understanding what our national interest is and I think Sec. Kerry glossed over that. I would much prefer that they say there is no national interest, any more than helping Libyans during the Gaddafi assault in Benghazi. Or if there is national interest what is it exactly? Proliferation? Other dictators seeing the green light if no US action? I have a really hard time being told by the government “it’s in our national interests” without clarifying the specifics of whether or not those interests are financial, political, environmental, economical, etc.
Unless that case is made more solid I think it would be best to present this as humanitarian only.
What would WK@lawscribe do? I am sure we will be waiting for his explanation a long time. Throwing out criticism is cheap. It means nothing without offering a solution.
I read his stat’s and they’re not impressive…..less than 50% of his passes are completed and he has a high turnover rate. What is the average for most QB’s?
He’s can energize his teammates in a way that shows he a leader but I agree with you. The skills aren’t there. When it breaks down for Tebow he goes from ugly to unwatchable.
Perfect, and the world that agreed to not allow chemical weapons voice your opinions publicly, NO HIDING behind PBO. WELL DONE PBO. maybe this will also give more time for political pressure from the Arab league to be brought to bear on Assad, who knows.
This is a serious topic relating to Syria and its people, but …
… can’t say I’m not gleeful that President Obama has turned this crisis around, and is making Congress be responsible to the American people, as he is willing to be, in front of the world … and to challenge the world to stand up for the Syrian people and all people …
and from the look on the President’s face, he OWNS ALL SIDES OF THIS and he knows it. #IStandWithPresidentObama
Our President is brilliant! Okay Congress time to stop vacationing and kissing your donors behinds, get back to Washington and start doing your job, jerks.
Awesome tweet, Chipsticks. Our president both said that in his opinion as the world’s oldest democracy, that use of chemical weapons should not stand while calling on congress to participate instead of criticizing from the sidelines. Absolutely perfect. Just this morning I was reading Bob Cesca’s column about not underestimating PBO.

O/T: Special thanks to Bob, JOB, canadabarb and 99 for comments last night regarding childhood cancer. One of you likely hit it best-that the letter from Monica Mom was written, at least in part, in anger and sadness. I know that was part of my daughter’s reaction. I also am always aware that I don’t know what it is like to lose a child to cancer as these two moms. I only know what it’s like to lose a grandson and those two things are entirely different. I do not judge or question their feelings. Except for the constant battle we in the childhood cancer community have with the “pink world” of breast cancer and how that always “sets us off”, the other two things in the President’s letter that upset my daughter was his talking about the ACA and then the NCI info. Once I reminded her that the ACA info is very, very important to many families, she let that go. However, I have to say she is right to be upset about the NCI info. That was mostly just words.
I put the letter in my childhood cancer folder so now I finally have a name/office at the WH to contact about turning the WH gold for next year. That’s a good thing. Thanks again, friends. Now, we are off to the UT football game. Go VOLS!!!!!!! :)
PBO is confounding all his adversaries. No body can read him :D
hee hee :) :) :) I love that
Oh thank God. Congress step up and the world community. Excellent question to the world Mr President. Phew, he will not be alone. Force everyone to voice their opinions PUBLICLY.
hi
i already have whitehouse.gov open. NBC has it listed as breaking news
Consensus is this is an update, not an announcement of imminent military action.
Consensus from who dotster
CNN announced that the White House said that … so who knows for sure?
Indeed, CNN the most trusted name in news!
Especially with Wolfie on camera, as he is now. Ghastly!
UN News Conference on MSNBC now

Well, df, we’ll soon know ….
Senate Democratic Caucus will receive unclassified briefing on #Syria via conference call today at 2:30pm .
Thank you Chipsticks for simply stating the facts. I truly hate speculations!!!!!
I am feeling a lot of sadness right now. This is all so terrible and overwhelming. The weight is on PBO.
Same here meta!

FINALLY, the pharmaceutical companies no longer are the moral arbiter on drug use in the US.
Well….is POTUS then going to give Putin a chance to be able to backtrack and soften on his rigid stance on Syria thus far?
I suspect that because PBO will be at the G20 summit next week…I do not think (just a guess really) that anything will happen till he returns home…although he is not scheduled to meet with Putin…anything could happen…esp after Putin’s statement about not being in favor of using CWs

Thank Lady Chips…..that helps me to understand how the YouTube Thingy works.
That picture says it all. I don’t envy him this position but I wish him well as I’ve done every second of every day since he began running for POTUS.
I am grateful we have him as a leader.
Thisssssssssss!!!

Morning everyone.
Ha!!! That’s some wrath too!!
Isn’t it lovely that we can now judge the importance of the President’s statements by whether or not a station interrupts a sports game
Sad, isn’t it?
CNN felt it necessary to mention that a telepromter has been set up in the Rose Garden……
yes of course! for a station that has soooo many memory problems they should avoid this kind of statement!
Well…the president uses teleprompter or not…..is the dig that TBGOPers’ dig…..it goes to show that today, the media does TBGOPers’ bid. They do Not do any reporting any more where Dems and especially where pres Obama is concerned.

83.777 more Hits and 21M Is TOD’s.
I am so nervous……but proud and with goose bumps all over me.
May the Force of Wisdom be with pres Obama.
Live feed starting now.
:)
Most excellent news about your wife, LL. Please extend my heartfelt congratulations.
Thanks so much, Bob.
Streaming has started …. President not yet at podium …
Pins and needles - prayers for POTUS .
The President is obviously concerned with how Congress will proceed if he strikes Syria.
Both sides on tv talking about constitution.
Both sides!!!
No one in Congress knows the Constitution better than President Obama.
That’s true Bob, but they think they do and hatred masks knowledge.
You can hear the protestors in the background.
So the protestors are okay with gassing?
A moment of levity before the seriousness.
I have the Palace / Sunderland match on. It’s halftime. And Palace has cheerleaders. CHEERLEADERS IN SOCCER! The US has ruined the beautiful game.
Saw them before their opening home game LL - and I nearly cried!!!!
Pathetic ….
How can now break away for a Presidential statement with half naked girls prancing around
Good god no. The day they start in baseball is the day I watch my last game on tv.
https://twitter.com/NewsBreaker/status/373858252112396288
Wouldn’t surprise me if he’s conversing with the UN Secretary-General ….
Does anyone else hear the noise in the background? sounds like a soccer game or sports being played….or protesters?
It is protesters….but not very many
NBC IS breaking in for the Presidential statement.
But it’s David Gregory and Upchuck, so it stays on mute until PBO comes on.
https://twitter.com/Jovie1312/status/373859620164739072
NBC just showed a shot of the protesters. I believe they were waving the flag of the Free Syrian Army.
This one, LL? http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/024/b/2/syria_flag_by_waheed6808-d4ngihd.jpg
The same. I went to check to make sure.
Thanks. Wonder what someone waving that flag is protesting …. perhaps not enough military intervention?
Or supporting the President, would be my guess.
Yes I thought that too
I hope that that’s the case, LL.
Saw an eerie header on the dreaded CNN that Syria is mentioning retaliation against any U.S. strike, that will turn the sea red …

I just want to say that I’m glad I have the missus and you fine folks for company for these troubling times.
The feeling is mutual LL
Feel exactly the same way, LL.
And NBC went back to soccer.
FUCH them!
lol that would be FUCK! I was not trying to be polite!
LOL. Although to be frank, I’d rather have soccer on than the talking heads. Let them break back in when PBO is at the podium.
Very concerned about Congress.
She is so disrespectful…..” Big guns ” and all the names but Hagel in lower case .
STFU Dana
dana dumbass doing what she does best…bashing? she is either stupid or lazy not to capitalize peoples names….she deserves the same disrespect.
Am I in purgatory?
Nope :)
Good, thanks.
No!
Thanks. Only asked because it didn’t let me post to comment to forus50. No big deal.

Shouldn’t he be urging Reid and Boehner ?
Why can’t congressional leaders call them back the Washington?
Don’t get this.
Is Congress unable to call themselves back into session?
Only the President can do?
(Not snark, don’t understand Cornyn / Gregory.)
He’s trying to up the pressure in the president. It’s all about blame.
So Sen. Cornyn doesn’t understand the meaning of separation of powers?
So again, our president is on his, own. SMH at this do-nothing congress.
Our dog lets out these epic sighs. I imagine he’s flabbergasted at the GOP congress.
Or is the dog a Sunderland fan??
He’s his father’s son. I’m getting him a Chelsea doggie shirt.
what is the delay in the broadcast. Anyone know?
The peeping Tom’s lurking in the Rose Garden bushes say he is on the phone in the Oval Office
He was making calls.
I love my President. He wants to make sure all his ducks are in a row. I can wait :)
See? Congress has an agenda! Only to embarrass the President.
Maybe Cornyn should wait until the President makes his statement.
Personally, I think this was POTUS long game all along. To get them on record.
BINGO!
and I am glad he did it…now what will the Press talk about….it will be interesting to see what the spin will be…
PBO out maneuvered them…
there it is :)
https://twitter.com/Jovie1312/status/373864969580056576
Apparently, the two-minute warning for Pres. Obama to come out was given about two minutes ago, according to Twitter.
Well
That’s that then!
It will be filibustered!!
Part of me wants PBO to go out the back door for a round of golf, leaving Knoller and Co sitting in the Rose Garden for five hours.
Oh, that would be epic.
Some more levity.
The Tim Tebow Experiment suffers another setback. He was just cut by the Patriots.
He seems like a nice enough, earnest fellow. But he’s just not NFL quarterback material.
Pins and needles here. I can´t even imagine the pressure and all the stuff that must be going on…
The VP too
President speaking
he’s throwing it onto Congress’ lap.
:-)
Perfect, and the world that agreed to not allow chemical weapons voice your opinions publicly, NO HIDING behind PBO. WELL DONE PBO. maybe this will also give more time for political pressure from the Arab league to be brought to bear on Assad, who knows.
Of course they will focus on the protesters
As usual, the media was WRONG. This is far more than an “update”.
I love this man.
+ 1,000,000,000,000
He’s doing it!!!!!!! He is using this as a teachable moment by the world’s oldest Democracy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautifully done. I jumped up and screamed when he said I ALSO decided……yeeessssssssss
He is a brilliant man! I just love him!
I’m in tears …. I love this man ….
I am so happy that the President is giving Congress a chance to mess up. What a brilliant tactic!
He’s teaching. He’s saying we have to be responsible, both for our actions and inaction.
https://twitter.com/Jovie1312/status/373866728859918336
Agreed—-that’s the end of the Syria action. No way will this pass in Congress—-all Repubs will vote against and a big chunk of Dems too.
It WILL pass in congress - mark my words.
I am not so sure what will happen…but it will prove interesting….
It WILL pass in congress - mark my words.
I love how you are definitive…I feel as you do…
Wonderful President Obama! Make Congress take a stand!!
Hah! Calling out those countries who “privately” support us. Time to show your cards.
#IStandWithPresidentObama
jacque…your comment is beautymas!
Ha! Wasn’t the President at the very, very top of his game?!!!
Omg, said as much above. Totally with you on this. I LOVE THIS MAN.
Who wouldn’t? :)
And now muting.
Well now, the ball is in Congress’s court. Good luck with that.
Bravoooooooooooooooooo …Bravooooooooooooo…Mr President….BAM!!!!!!!!!!…
Congress better get its freakin’ ducks in a row.
Our President is brilliant! Okay Congress time to stop vacationing and kissing your donors behinds, get back to Washington and start doing your job, jerks.
POTUS is giving Congress their Constitutional Right to Wage a War.
Now…..Boehner, what say You? You wanted to be consulted. Now, you are given the chance to Mock it up.
As i just commented on TPV, in one statement, PBO has undone the Imperial Presidency.
Thisssssssssssssssss!!!!
Hahahahaha Chipsticks!
Brilliantly Stated, Chips….Brava :!:
Awesome tweet, Chipsticks. ROFLMAO.
Absolutely brilliant tweet, Chips.
My chest is so puffed up with pride of this President!!!!
Boom ! How ya like me now Congress !
wait a minute. I didn’t see it and I had to two tabs open to watch. what happened?
YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES -
THE ONLY ADULT IN THE ROOM MAKES THE SYRIA SITUATION BRUTALLY PLAIN TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. NOW, PLEASE PROCEED CONGRESS. WHAT SAY YOU?? LET THE DEBATE BEGIN.
Let the Debate Begin…HA!
I think he did the right thing in a very difficult situation. I’m torn myself about what to do. Wait and see.
Sen. John Cornyn: “POTUS is right to seek a vote of congress on military intervention in #Syria.”
Now the media is gonna explain what the President DIDN’T say and why he did it. sheesh!
They can Spin it all they want. The bottom line is Congress has Now asked to weigh in and the President said: Please, proceed.
This is The best News Ever this afternoon.
Yup. Sure is. The following circus is gonna be fun to watch. They can’t blame PBO anymore. The congres is gonna have to do some work. The whole world will be watching.

Well, now everybody must show where they want the situation in Syria to go - stand up and be counted
As someone who has been dubious of the course the POTUS has been on, gotta say this is one hell of a chess move.
