Nelson Mandela is to be buried in his ancestral home in Qunu in the Eastern Cape, ending a week of commemorations for South Africa’s first black leader.
Some 4,500 people - including foreign dignitaries - will be attending the funeral, which will blend state ceremonial with traditional rituals.
Members of his family are attending an overnight vigil, with a traditional praise singer believed to be chanting details of his long journey and life.
He died on 5 December aged 95.

To solemn music, the coffin draped in a South African flag was moved by a military guard of honour and placed in a hearse to begin the 32km journey to Qunu, where Mr Mandela had wanted to spend his final days.
People waving flags and cheering and singing - in places 10 to 12 deep - lined the route taken by the cortege through Mthatha town to pay their last respects.
Tears as well as smiles could be seen on the faces of onlookers.
“He is finally coming home to rest, I can’t even begin to describe the feeling I have inside,” 31-year-old Bongani Zibi told AFP news agency.
“Part of me is sad but I’m also happy that he has found peace.”
Will our media carry the funeral?
Funny you should ask - I was thinking today that the BBC seems to have followed this every day with detailed reports.
Another thing that popped into my head tonight was to wonder why the village of Qunu did not have their own ‘viewing’. Yes, I figure all these days of public mourning must have been hard on immediate family members, yet reading some of the comments from his local ‘neighbours’ I feel for them not getting a chance to be more closely involved in the closure ceremonies.
They have long shared him with the world vc - I think they would be so proud to keep sharing - who could not feel honor and joy by just being part of his family
They have been doing a thorough job - most everything I’ve seen each day since the memorial has come from BBC.
In fact, I think I saw Jesse Jackson in one of their pics yesterday or today (can’t remember which).
South Africa has had a much longer/closer relationship with the UK than it has ever had with the US. Most of it has not been a good relationship (to put it mildly) but reconciliation did happen and is still happening. Many of us with British roots have friends/family/ancestors who settled in South Africa 19th/20th century. There are many ties.

US media hardly shows these scenes. But they will blanket their airwaves and internet sites with gossipy trash about sign-language interpreter…. Something tells me that we will see very little of the State Funeral because it won’t provide an opportunity for the media to stalk PBO and push made-up stories about him. I hope we do get to see something - even if on a livestream. :)
I honestly thought nothing could surprise me any more about the media Hopefruit, but their efforts to denigrate every passing moment of the celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life, with ceaseless moronic crap, has actually astounded me. I think the SA government/ANC ****ed up big time with the sign language guy, and I’m still pissed he was allowed anywhere near PBO, all it did was give the MSM an opportunity to focus on nonsense, which they lapped up, needless to say. The rest? Unadulterated bile. Contrast their reporting of this with their wetting-their-knickers reverential treatment of the passing of that witch, Thatcher. No words.

A good comparison - most of the UK ignored Thatcher’s funeral - many celebrated because she had died - not because she lived. She changed lives in UK - and not for the better. She paid off one generation and sold the rest of the people (and the local givernments) into poverty. But - she was white and she was bff with that paragon of media virtue Ronald Reagan.
The US media will always ignore anything that is not related 100% to the US - hence the only thing that happened at the Mandela memorial was PBO shaking hands, PBO taking a photo and an interpreter who stood next to PBO. They didn’t even concentrate on the President’s speech. They ignore the President when he is outside of the US - their press conferences are all about the media and nothing about the country, the administration, the people they are supposedly reporting to.
Nelson Mandela is in my thoughts forever.
The story of the interpreter : a serious breach of security, so it’s big news. So I accept the fact that the media devoted a lot of time on the story. But for the rest, they’ve been awful.
I think the pundits and their bosses in the editing room care only SUPERFICIALLY about Mandela. He’s a global icon so yes they have to talk about him. But their heart and soul is NOT affected. Good point, Chipsticks, to remind us of their covering of Mrs. Thatcher’s passing.
They don’t really GET, at the consciousness level, the spiritual importance and greatness of Nelson Mandela. Margaret Thatcher will go down in history as a British Prime Minister, an important one, yes, but not more than that. While Nelson Mandela will inspire generations of people all around the world for decades, for centuries. Because, like President Obama said, he is a people’s iberator.
If they did GET the stature of Nelson Mandela, if they DID respect, profoundly, the message of Mr. Mandela, they would have been very moved by President’s speech, and would not had even DARED to devote so much time to the silliness of “Selfiegate”. They would have felt it indecent to tarnish the day. They wouldn’t have been in the mood for pettiness.

At a guess, he only wrote on this because of the Jesus issue, not the white santa. Sullivan preaches on issues that personally impact himself - catholic religion/gay issues.
Yeah. After reading his writings on race, African-Americans, and intelligence, I was beyond disgusted. That someone who is a minority (his being gay) and who conservatives treat as less than human, would have such views of other minorities was very eye opening.
