Russian MPs have proposed new laws that would make it easier for Russia to incorporate parts of Ukraine, and allow Russian citizenship to be fast-tracked.
Pro-Kremlin party A Just Russia put forward both bills, and linked them directly to the situation in Ukraine.
Separatist and pro-Russian feelings are strong in Ukraine’s Crimea region, which is now the focus of the crisis.
Russian MPs say a referendum or a plea from a territory’s leaders would be enough to trigger the new provisions.
There are already many Russian citizens in Crimea.
In Sevastopol, base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, a majority hold Russian passports.
Under Russia’s existing law, a neighbouring state would have to sign a treaty with Russia to allow part of its territory to become a new “subject” of the Russian Federation.
But Mikhail Yemelyanov, deputy leader of A Just Russia, said the law had been drafted for peaceful times, and did not go far enough for situations where a state was falling apart.

Elderly and disabled passengers could lose vital bus services because of cuts in government funding, councils in England have warned.
The Local Government Association (LGA) says support for the concessionary fares scheme has been reduced by over a third since 2010.
Under the scheme, councils have to provide free off-peak travel for those aged over 62 or disabled.
The government said it provides funding to meet subsidised travel.

The year I spent in the UK I was often the only fare paying passenger on my bus. At that time the age was 60 - so someone upped it a couple of years. It was an amazing program & in London, at least, very well patronized.
And yes - so many of these travelers vote for right wing politicians - but given what Tony Blair achieved - lots of folks became somewhat anti labor. I give him equal share with GWB for the Iraq war - at least GW was a right wing not over bright politician - Blair should never have supported those lies.
All 3 people recovered from the avalanche here in Missoula are alive. This is all that is known at this time. They are checking all the hills around Missoula for any other potential avalanches. This is quite the occurance for us. Never in the history of this city has there been any avalanches.

I am thinking very evil thoughts about putin and the arrogance of his supporters in and outside of Russia;
the actions of Russia have led to too much spilling of blood in Syria, Ukraine, …. as they hamper the actions of the other nations focused on ending the death of civilians;
now would be a great time for the democracy movement in Russia to take to the streets in the numbers equal to or greater than what we saw a few months ago.
may be with his own people protesting him, putin and his henchmen can leave Ukraine alone to sort out its own challenging economic and political problems so that they can create a more sustainable and equitable economy for the diverse Ukrainian population;
Without doubt Linda, one action that would be of considerable benefit would be for Russians to challenge Putin. No doubt, many would suffer, but, as with Ukraine, the people who need to ‘rise up’ and be the force for change that Russia so desperately needs to be anything other than a nuclear plutocratic state, are Russians.
I don’t know how one can motivate the citizens of Russia to stand up now and “pull a Euromaidan” on putin;
if we are guided by putin’s actions in Chechnya & the break-away republics and how he has turned on his domestic opposition, a lot of democracy activist would face great physical harm if they came out now
