      Thanks, Chips.

You’ve got me all choked up with this picture you selected. Sec. Shinseki is a good and courageous man. He has sacrificed so much in defense and love for his country and it is a shame that the media played a heavy role in backing the GOP and railroading him out. He and President Obama fought the good fight and made so many improvements to the VA.

I wish him the best and I thank him so much for everything he has done for veterans and the country.

Wonderful collection. I sometimes complain that 140 characters is not enough for nuance, and it isn’t. But sometimes the truth doesn’t need the nuance. Sometimes it is pretty balck and white.

I am seeing three kinds of people today. Those that, like the vast majority of us, view this as a sad day. Then there are those celebrating the resignation. And then there are those, like pmcarpenter, who I generally like, who say this wasn’t a resignation, but a firing.

There are two issues I have with the last group. Number 1 is that they assume that President Obama did the firing despite all evidence to the contrary. But even more important, they are saying that Shinseki isn’t honorable enough to resign and let others tackle the problem, knowing he is just a distraction and that as long as he is there, solutions won’t be looked at.

Took her a week to get her shit together on McConnell’s latest ACA blunder. She got off a few good lines to her credit. But she has been disgraceful on the VA (of which she knows nothing) and on Shinseki. Running to the mic, doing her damnedest to be a good RWNJ.

And she’s slow to figure out what she should say, and half the time she says the wrong thing.

Gee, here’s an idea: how about informing your constituents about how Democratic policies and this administration will improve your life and protect you and your interests?

As you said, who needs a tepid RWNJ when they have the real thing.

I’ve been tweeting her like crazy, I’m so pissed. I’ll see if I can corral the tweets.

Yes, we have Al Franken and Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and all the other supposedly great Democratic sentinels that stand guard over this great democracy. But I haven’t heard one single word from those motherfuckers backing General Shinseki or President Obama for that matter. When it comes to President Obama these sentinels go into hiding waiting for the storm to subside. The Democrats love talking pretty and witty, as if appealing to someone’s intellect will somehow cure their ills. I am not surprised General Shinseki is gone, I’m not even less surprised that I haven’t heard a voice other that the Whitehouse standing up for General Shinseki. President Obama has tried for the last five plus years to give the Democratic Party their manhood, but at every opportunity the Democrats have come up short.

You’re wrong about Sanders: Sanders has been phenomenal on the VA issue and on Shinseki. He kept pointing the finger at the past administration & at the GOP. Shinseki had his support. For once, Bernie did the job that Democrats should do. People like Franken should know better. I’m sickened by it.

But this time - Sanders was in our court, big time.

      • 62 Don
        May 30, 2025 at 2:39 pm

        Sanders voted against closing Gitmo!

“A number of important questions remain unanswered regarding the rather complicated issue of not just how you close down the facility, but what you do with the prisoners,” he added. “Are there some who should be released, are there others who should be returned to their home countries, are we confident that under Bush the correct determinations were made with respect to these prisoners’ status as ‘enemy combatants’? In order to answer these questions, President Obama has appointed a high-level committee of top administration officials who will be issuing a report in the coming months. I think that it is prudent to review that plan they develop before we spend $80 million in taxpayer money.”

I repeat, Bernie Sanders voted against closing gitmo. It is safe to assume that if President Obama wanted to close gitmo then he had a plan in place to do just that.

I thought we were talking about the VA ‘scandal’. Sanders has been very supportive and sensible on that.

I already see signs of mass hysteria on Twitter, so let me just say that Jay Carney is already one of the longest serving Press Secretaries ever. This is a tough job and most press secs serve 2 years and move on. Meanwhile, it’s par for the course that people come and go in WH administrations. It doesn’t mean anything is “wrong,” it’s just that people are ready to move on - and that they are perfectly entitled to do. Just some perspective.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/05/16/1091597/-GOP-Voted-Against-7-Bills-to-Help-Veterans

Here’s the Bills in numerical order. In short, the GOP has voted TO NOT SUPPORT THE TROOPS at least 7 times. I think that is sufficient to call the GOP House Hypocrites and Phonies.

Bill’s Blocked By Republican’s Since President Obama Took Office.

David Gregory, John McCain, and the media aren’t covering this story so we have to.

Here’s a concise extraction for easy viewing for those who are INTERESTED IN VETERANS ISSUES and need to know which party supports veterans and which party does not.

    The rejected Bills are named:

    H.R. 466 – Wounded Veteran Job Security Act became H. R. 2875.

    H.R. 1168 — Veterans Retraining Act

H.R. 1171 – Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program Reauthorization

H.R. 1172 — Requiring List on VA Website of Organizations Providing Scholarships for Veterans

H.R. 1293 — Disabled Veterans Home Improvement and Structural Alteration Grant Increase Act of 2009

    H.R. 1803 — Veterans Business Center Act

H.R. 2352 – Job Creation Through Entrepreneurship Act

DETAILS OF BILLS REJECTED BY REPUBLICANS:

Details of each bill at the link. Pass It On.

In fact, I think that it is our duty to pass this info on to every veterans organization IN EACH STATE, every local news outlet, IN EACH STATE…and demand that our elected officials make a comment on this. I happen to think that the General’s resignation today may have a backfiring effect. I say that because most veterans know that the VA has had these problems for years. They also know that Gen Shinseki has worked tirelessly on their behalf. They will begin to see more and more pundits, RW talkers, LW talkers and the like..come out and jaw about this, but when they had the chance..none of these people actually took the opportunity to fix the problem, because decades later, it still exists! Add to that the facts that we know about understaffing, bonuses, more people able to access VA care, more returning vets that earned care and further strain the system, and you have a recipe for trouble….I don’t think they will take too kindly to certain people using this situation to score cheap political points….others that have always believed that Repubs had their best interests at heart…should be really, really paying attention now…be honest with yourselves about what you hear…and VOTE FOR DEMS WITH A PROVEN TRACK RECORD OF ACTUAL SUPPORT!

    • 86 Anna
      May 30, 2025 at 2:25 pm

I know we’re heartbroken. I know we’re fed up. But we can’t let a setback like Gen. Shinseki’s resignation knock us off our game. That’s what they want. Politics are bruising, and sometimes we take the beating. The key is to get back up and back into the fight. To not do so means a certain loss.

Some in that district might as well live in rural MS. They will re-elect her but any other Dem could easily be defeated. Besides, they will tear her record apart because she was part of the VA during these years. She’s great where she is and she grows with the job every day. She has a great future but right now I want her in Congress.

She called for Sec Shinseki to resign just this morning.

wouldn’t that be a kick in the arse. Tammy would not roll over for the msm instead she would give all the jackals explicit directions to the location of the nearest cliff.

I don’t think that she would be since she has served as Asst to Vet Affairs in the 1st term.

Yeh now that I think of it, she’d be a new scapegoat. Confirmation hearing would be a total circus.

Honestly I have my doubts that Congress will confirm anyone that POTUS selects to run the VA.. I believe keeping the VA without a permanent Secretary is exactly what the repubs want.. and that their ultimate goal is and has been to eliminate it altogether or make it private.. thus helping it to fail IS their goal. Maybe I’m just too cynical anymore.

A shame we’re losing Jay Carney. It’s s a very tough exhausting job. I can see where a person might only want it for a limited time. He’s got a young family with kids, so it’s understandable.

“Statement of Information Policy Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to the official note of the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation regarding so-called “Russian humanitarian aid” in Eastern Ukraine, May 29, 2025

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has considered the request of the Russian side to give it the opportunity to provide so-called humanitarian assistance in the eastern regions of Ukraine.

We believe this proposal is nothing other than another element of propaganda, which has as its goal to demonstrate, especially to the Russian consumer, the supposed “good intentions” of the Kremlin by taking advantage of the difficult situation that Russia has itself provoked in the eastern regions of Ukraine for its own narrow political interests.

In practice, it is specifically because of the actions taken by the Russian side in the East of our country that so far peace and stability have not been reestablished. Russia has not shown any willingness to de-escalate the conflict and to stabilize the situation. From the territory of the Russian Federation, the Ukrainian-Russian border is being systematically violated by armed terrorist groups who kill, terrorize, and intimidate the citizens of Ukraine. Therefore, we should not discount the likelihood that the gimmick of the so-called humanitarian aid is nothing other than a veiled attempt to help Russian mercenaries and terrorists who now find themselves in a difficult situation due to the success of the antiterrorist operations.

Yesterday the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine sent an official response to the request by the Russian side regarding the humanitarian aid. In the document, we proposed that Moscow should focus instead on meeting the many requests for humanitarian aid from the residents of the Crimean Autonomous Republic, which has been annexed by Russia.

We officially expressed our concern that numerous warnings from the international community regarding the rapid deterioration of conditions on the Ukrainian peninsula as a result of the Russian occupation have not received an adequate response from Russia.

In the note, the Ministry has once again called on the Russian side to ensure the rapid and steady fulfillment of its obligations to Ukraine and the world and prevent further deterioration of the situation on Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, which is on the verge of a humanitarian disaster as a result of Russian armed aggression.
