      I especially like this comment from this piece:

      JOELEEH NYC 13 hours ago
      Being of Eastern European Jewish background, I feel as Mr Cohen does. The vile nature of Hamas cannot justify callous disregard of the lives of civilians held under siege and terrorized by shelling for which there is no Iron Dome. Israel had its role in empowering Hamas. Israel occupies no moral high ground with its treatment of Palestinian rights. The crimes of the opposition do not justify your own by simply saying “those people are worse”. Franz Fanon wrote that it is humanly normal and to be expected for a people to hate its oppressor. Truer words have never been expressed. Like it or not, Israel has oppressed, and as Americans we should understand that we enable this oppression, with our huge military aid, so don’t tell me we have no right to criticize. The rest of the world thinks, rightly, that it is done in our name too.

    Still got U.S. World Cup fever:

    For you non carnivores like me……I’m moving to San Francisco ASAP!!!

    San Francisco-based grilled cheese restaurant the Melt claims to have a new solution for an age-old problem: catered food that is soggy, cold or stale. In fact, the fast-casual chain employed NASA engineers to tackle the problem. The result? The Melt’s Smart Box, which is an attempt to keep food — specifically The Melt’s menu of grilled cheeses, soups and salads — fresh upon delivery.

    The company has been developing the Smart Box since last October. At the time, the chain wanted to expand its catering program. Before the box was developed, the Melt served off site clients with a fleet of renovated school buses, which dished up food at parties and events. The company wanted to build a program that would allow the restaurant to serve pre-prepared sandwiches, but couldn’t find a transportation method that would maintain the same quality of food as The Melt has in its store, said Kerri Martin, vice president of marketing. “A ‘melt,’ (sandwich) without assistance, lasts about six to seven minutes of optimal quality,” Martin said of the grilled cheeses. “When you look at catering, you have to allow for at least 30 minutes by the time it gets out of kitchen and to the client, so that was the challenge at hand.”

    With the help of an internal team of engineers, and consultants with roots in NASA, the Melt developed the Smart Box, with a system of heating pads, insulation and fans to provide the balance of air circulation, humidity and heat necessary for keeping its meals hot and crispy. The box also has internal censors to maintain that balance, depending what kind of food is inside. Melts with tomato or spinach, for example, might need a different level of humidity than other sandwiches…..continued

    The Ebola infections reported in West Africa appear to be doing more and more damage and extending to greater geographical areas;

    I don’t know what people are going to do - in the face of the Ebola that is killing many, affecting medical personnel, fueling panic as rumors and conspiracy theories abound and in the face of a constrained and under-developed medical infrastructure;

    ;

    so many things to be concerned about around the world!

    “What are you doing?”

    “Hunting flies”

    “Oh, killed any?”

    “Yep, three males, two females”

    “How can you tell?”

    “Three were on a beer can, two were on the phone”

    So it is really true that Admiral William McRaven, Head of Special Operations and organizer of Bin Laden Termination is retiring to become next Chancellor of UT University System;

    I thought he would continue being part of the leadership of the US Military;

    • 65 lovelyplains
      July 29, 2025 at 10:37 pm

      Appears so, Global: From the link I provided above… side note/ I meant Admiral not Gen. in my original post:

      President Barack Obama nominated McRaven for his appointment to the rank of four-star admiral in 2011, and soon after he was named commander of the United States Special Operations Command. As the leader of U.S. Special Ops, McRaven oversees a 67,000-person, $10 billion operation and plays one of the nation’s premier roles in keeping the country safe. Author of “Spec Ops: Case Studies in Special Operations Warfare: Theory and Practice,” considered a fundamental text on special operations strategy, McRaven also served as commander of Special Operations Command Europe and was tapped to be the first director of the NATO Special Operation Forces Coordination Centre.

      Perhaps best known for planning and orchestrating the operation that led to the death of Osama Bin Laden and playing a supporting role in the capture of Saddam Hussein in 2003, McRaven has been called bold, innovative, visionary and courageous by national leaders and his military peers. His military career has spanned the globe. He has served as a trusted White House advisor and has spent countless hours delivering Congressional testimony, assisting lawmakers in understanding critical policy issues……

      …“We were aware that getting Adm. McRaven to consider the UT System position might have presented a challenge, given high demand nationally for his leadership,” Foster said. “We were honored that he chose the UT System as the most important place where he could continue to serve his nation upon his pending retirement from a most distinguished military career.”…

      *** I would be honored to have the opportunity to serve The University of Texas System and the people of Texas,” McRaven said. “My wife Georgeann and I are excited about returning home to our family and friends. I thank the Regents for their trust and confidence in my leadership and I look forward to this extraordinary responsibility with enthusiasm and gratitude.****

        Exactly. I don’t recall those kinds of lines wrapping around blocks/buildings to see GWB 6 yrs into his presidency. When PBO visits a city - it’s excitement and anticipation that is palpable not only among the people but among the local business owners and local media. And don’t get me started about his international trips…

    Boehner has really bit off more than he can chew.

    Sure, he doesn’t care about polling showing most Americans against the lawsuit and definitely against impeachment.

    But he should care about all the money Dems are raking in waving the bloody flag of lawsuit and possible impeachment. Grassroots Democrats are voting with their wallets, and will vote at the ballot box in November. All Boehner has done is rile them up, which is a major mistake. And the lawsuit is weak sauce for the diehards who wag the GOP dog now.

    This will be fun.

      I’ve read about Arthur Bryant’s BBQ — supposed to be one of the great BBQ restaurants in America.

      So glad that PBO can get out and enjoy himself (despite the dire situations in Ukraine and the Middle East) and not have BOTH Dems and GOP nipping at his heels — which would have happened in 2012.

      Now it’s just business as usual, with the MSM/Koch and GOP criticizing his every move.

      Remember when TODville was wondering why few EU leaders had public comments about Flight #MH17 (aside from genuine horror)? I mentioned then that they were waiting for the person that the MSM erroneously claims “leads from behind.”

      Don’t hold your breath for MSM to ever mention this fact.

      That will be up to historians because MSM’s greatest nightmare is for #LandslideDems2014 and to see a permanent Dem Executive branch.

        And, WE are going to make sure they live that ‘nightmare’ for decades, Arapaho, and not just the Executive Branch but the Legislative, as well.

        Until a responsible conservative party emerges we must lead America.
