Did Malia keep her Dad company? Very nice gesture for a busy teen but then it’s clear that she loves her busy father.
Same thought ran through my mind. A very thoughtful gesture.
She probably has a calming effect on him.
I am sure that having some special time, just her and Dad, means a lot in their busy world.

Morning all. We are three days from our Fiesta Latina and rain is forecast, but we are forging ahead. No way are we postponing this event unless an earthquake or hurricane occurs on Saturday. If necessary, we’ll slop around in the muck dancing the salsa. I’ve worried about the weather for weeks and now I’ve given it up to the heavens. Sometimes you just gotta say the hell with it and push forward.
On another note, I’m praying AG Holder can make a difference in Ferguson today. I am so hoping he delivers a million ton boom to the police chief and then holds a press conference so he can tell us all about it. We need the light of truth telling in this dark situation and Holder is the only one I trust.
A New York grand jury is weighing criminal charges against a police officer in the death of a black man who died after being placed in a chokehold.
The prosecutor in Staten Island said he would present evidence next month in the July death of Eric Garner, 43.
Garner, who had asthma, was heard on a witness video shouting “I can’t breathe!” as police arrested him for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes.
A medical examiner has ruled his death a homicide.

Chokeholds are banned by the New York Police Department and Commissioner William Bratton has ordered an internal review of training.
Meanwhile, Mr Pantaleo has been stripped of his gun and badge while the investigation goes on, and another officer involved has been placed on desk duty.

Africa, all those words-ugly, insensitive, offensive-have always described Joe Klein. He has a long history of demonstrating these traits. It’s amazing how people who nothing whatsoever about a topic or a culture feel qualified to pontificate about it. He is, among other things, a damned fool.
There’s no such thing as “black-on-black” crime. Criminals operate wherever they reside/work/entertain, etc. Thus most criminals tend to commit offenses against members of the same race, gender, background, etc.
Will Mr. Klein give us “cultural insights” into those pedophiles/child molesters, and mass shooters, cyberhackers, who are majority white and tend to commit offenses against others of similar ethnicity/background?
I mean this is just an extraordinarily divisive and hateful kind of thinking that doesn’t achieve anything for anyone.

There’s something about the #IceBucketChallenge that I find off-putting.
Of course raising money for ALS research is a worthy, noble cause. Lou Gehrig’s farewell speech at Yankee Stadium is a truly an iconic moment in American sports history.
But the #IceBucketChallenge reeks of white Hamptons elite privilege. CBS news is in on the PR promotion, as is this person — so glad that PBO did not accept Ethel Kennedy’s challenge — I have admiration beyond words for Ethel and of course PBO, but as optics go, this would be inappropriate with the dire situations in Iraq and Ferguson.

This ice bucket challenge was all over our local news yesterday. The segment was introduced by the story of a woman whose father died young of ALS and her participation in this, then the biggie was our governor, Mary Failin’ getting doused. I just don’t understand it. How is this supposed to raise money for ALS research? I agree, it’s creepy and offputting.

Yes, I agree that we should keep the pressure on Byers to put out a clearer retraction of her very damaging (and widely re-tweeted/Favorited) tweet about police witnesses. This is how the media KNOWINGLY helps the killer cop by tainting the local jury pool…this is far more consequential and important to the investigation than Captain Johnson, or any media person who gets teargassed or arrested in Ferguson.
Tapper had thousands repeating his tweet about his wonderful ‘source’, so I am dreaming that a few of those may read a tweet with his name, and a couple of the genuinely open-minded (yes, in Tapper’s TL - it’s possible! ;) ) may even follow a link or two.
PLEASE RETWEET (even if you tweeted her post) - help to, maybe, spread Chips’ sourced post a little further.

Sorry, but I have a right to express my opinion while laying out a few facts about a very troubling situation in the US. Far more chronic and impactful than anything ISIS may or may not do. Eric Holder won’t be AG forever - in fact, he’s unlikely to be AG past 2014 or 2015.
But this pattern of shooting unarmed citizens execution style as been going on long before Holder came on the scene and will continue well after he leaves.

carolyn, re: PO and Malia and your daughter and her dad. Same here with our daughter and Daddy. She is also 43, almost 44! Yikes!! In the early 90’s when we lived in Fairfax, he needed to make a trip to TN to check on hiselderly mother. Can’t remember why, but I couldn’t go. (It was a long weekend deal.) Anyway, our daughter said she would go with him. They both shared when they got back and how they haardly haad the radio on, especially on the trip down because they talked and talked and talked. I asked about what? “Anything and everything.” Still love that story. :)

Just a thought that’s been troubling me. The anger, fear, outrage, despair, depression and gut-wrenching grief that we’ve all been experiencing lately can take a big toll on our physical and mental health and I have seen many people here rightly reveal their deep anguish, heartache and tears. In the meantime, we all have personal challenges, exhaustion and worries to deal with even while campaigns around the country are heating up for the fall races. It’s going to be tough going in the weeks and months and ahead, so I think it’s crucial that we all pay special attention to keeping ourselves healthy. If the anger gets too overwhelming, step away or take a walk, or hug someone you love. If you feel it’s all hopeless, reach out to someone and take break. We’re all human and we’re all trying as hard as we can to do right by our families, our country and our beloved president. The beauty of checking in every day is that we all care about each other and lift each other up, no matter where in the world we come from or what we look like. So this is partly a thank you to fellow TODers and partly a wish that we remember to take care of ourselves and find whatever little ways we can to lift our spirits.
