Morning all. We are three days from our Fiesta Latina and rain is forecast, but we are forging ahead. No way are we postponing this event unless an earthquake or hurricane occurs on Saturday. If necessary, we’ll slop around in the muck dancing the salsa. I’ve worried about the weather for weeks and now I’ve given it up to the heavens. Sometimes you just gotta say the hell with it and push forward.
On another note, I’m praying AG Holder can make a difference in Ferguson today. I am so hoping he delivers a million ton boom to the police chief and then holds a press conference so he can tell us all about it. We need the light of truth telling in this dark situation and Holder is the only one I trust.
A New York grand jury is weighing criminal charges against a police officer in the death of a black man who died after being placed in a chokehold.
The prosecutor in Staten Island said he would present evidence next month in the July death of Eric Garner, 43.
Garner, who had asthma, was heard on a witness video shouting “I can’t breathe!” as police arrested him for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes.
A medical examiner has ruled his death a homicide.
…
Chokeholds are banned by the New York Police Department and Commissioner William Bratton has ordered an internal review of training.
Meanwhile, Mr Pantaleo has been stripped of his gun and badge while the investigation goes on, and another officer involved has been placed on desk duty.
A lawyer for the police officer said it was too early to say whether he would testify before the grand jury.
I love that the controversial female theologian, Sister Elizabeth Johnson, was given an award despite the disapproval of the Vatican. Here’s what she said: ..”the submerged female half of the church, indeed of the human race,…is rising.” Oh would that it were so!!!!
Hey, Chips, I hope you’re feeling good about your stellar post yesterday on Jake (the poseur)Tapper. It must have felt good to write it because it sure felt great to read it. Great job!!!!!
GM Chips and TOD. Chips I am in total agreement with Jackie. I enjoyed your post about Tapper very much. I don’t have a way with words but I felt like I was speaking through you.
although i know that folks can change…and they must change if things are to improve…but in the case of Tapper and his ilk….a leopard does not change his spots….
Africa, all those words-ugly, insensitive, offensive-have always described Joe Klein. He has a long history of demonstrating these traits. It’s amazing how people who nothing whatsoever about a topic or a culture feel qualified to pontificate about it. He is, among other things, a damned fool.
There’s no such thing as “black-on-black” crime. Criminals operate wherever they reside/work/entertain, etc. Thus most criminals tend to commit offenses against members of the same race, gender, background, etc.
Will Mr. Klein give us “cultural insights” into those pedophiles/child molesters, and mass shooters, cyberhackers, who are majority white and tend to commit offenses against others of similar ethnicity/background?
I mean this is just an extraordinarily divisive and hateful kind of thinking that doesn’t achieve anything for anyone.
Hf, Klein could care less about achieving anything for anyone but himself. He loves to bloviate about things he knows nothing about. I have absolutely zero respect for him.
Pants or not, I’m not impressed with Tapper’s silly posturing in Ferguson. Obviously Film Fatale missed the part where he knowingly re-tweeted unsourced information from a “reporter” who was no leave at the time, and did not even vet her sources. Even after he got push-back, he continued to defend his poor and unethical decision. FUCK him and the horse he rode on.
Speaking of Alaska, also too (too early for word salad snark?).
@mtMarilyn will appreciate @UpshotNYT describing Montana as a purple (not red) state — not in so many words, but they do so in the second paragraph of this article — see tweet:
Alaska might be a state somewhat like Montana or North Dakota, where local Democrats can win federal elections #AKSEN
http://t.co/VbCW3jZRHW
— Arapaho415 (@arapaho415) August 20, 2025
And this is interesting. @NYTimes calculates a 62% chance for Dem AK Senator, while our favorite-to-bash-sellout Nate Silver calculation shows #AKSEN as a toss-up and WaPo predicts a Republican win by a greater margin:
Dan Sullivan wins the Senate primary in Alaska. The state stays a tossup for now. nytimes.com/newsgraphics/2… http://t.co/jmoqMqCEPq— LEO (@nytleo) August 20, 2025
Follow Reign of April Twitter TL right now - she’s giving that St. Louis “reporter” Christine Byers (who’s supposedly on maternity leave) a piece of (all of our) minds about that infamous “12-witnesses” tweet…
There’s something about the #IceBucketChallenge that I find off-putting.
Of course raising money for ALS research is a worthy, noble cause. Lou Gehrig’s farewell speech at Yankee Stadium is a truly an iconic moment in American sports history.
But the #IceBucketChallenge reeks of white Hamptons elite privilege. CBS news is in on the PR promotion, as is this person — so glad that PBO did not accept Ethel Kennedy’s challenge — I have admiration beyond words for Ethel and of course PBO, but as optics go, this would be inappropriate with the dire situations in Iraq and Ferguson.
RT @TimMontgomerie: George W Bush undergoes the ice bucket challenge http://t.co/2eNXTru47q pic.twitter.com/DRg06tlRGg
This ice bucket challenge was all over our local news yesterday. The segment was introduced by the story of a woman whose father died young of ALS and her participation in this, then the biggie was our governor, Mary Failin’ getting doused. I just don’t understand it. How is this supposed to raise money for ALS research? I agree, it’s creepy and offputting.
‘So glad that PBO did not accept Ethel Kennedy’s challenge’
GM, Arapaho, and thank you for that piece of information. I had missed it previously but was so hoping he would not participate! Surely they can come up with another way to raise funds, better than wasting water while some areas are undergoing drought. [I mean, what about the dreaded 'optics'?] Seriously, I *am* happy PBO won’t be involved.
#Ferguson residents deserve a full & unambiguous retraction of your "> 12 witnesses corroborate #DarrenWilson's story" msg @ChristineDByers
— April (@ReignOfApril) August 20, 2025
Yes, I agree that we should keep the pressure on Byers to put out a clearer retraction of her very damaging (and widely re-tweeted/Favorited) tweet about police witnesses. This is how the media KNOWINGLY helps the killer cop by tainting the local jury pool…this is far more consequential and important to the investigation than Captain Johnson, or any media person who gets teargassed or arrested in Ferguson.
Tapper had thousands repeating his tweet about his wonderful ‘source’, so I am dreaming that a few of those may read a tweet with his name, and a couple of the genuinely open-minded (yes, in Tapper’s TL - it’s possible! ;) ) may even follow a link or two.
PLEASE RETWEET (even if you tweeted her post) - help to, maybe, spread Chips’ sourced post a little further.
PTP: One example of how @cnnbrk & @JakeTapper make the news for you.

Please read objectively and follow the links.
Gail, you have surfaced from beneath all that work…. or am I being delusional?
Sending you greetings from a rainy east coast morning, and wishing I was able to waft some rain your way. I’m a bit fed up because the grass is overgrown and as it rains virtually every other day I can’t get to cut it. Yesterday was dry, so I thought this afternoon would be a go - not now though.
G ‘morning again. Anyone on here know the story about the 21 year-old in WI who was killed by the police. I heard the father interviewed this morning though had to get out of the car before the end. It was riviting. Will provide a link. I do not remember hearing about this. Must be because we didn’t have TOD then! :):)
Also, heard on Bill Press Show that David Jackson, WH reporter (don’t remember who for-USAToday maybe) said he if “fairly sure” the President came back to attend to a private family issue. He repeated it. How in the world do they come up w/this junk and then put it out there?? OH never mind………..
Google tells me that David Jackson is with USA Today, but I’ve never heard of him. He’s kind of a jerk on Twitter, though he did just recently follow @TweetOfGod and @KenBurnsAmerica.
?
” the President came back to attend to a private family issue” — returned where? To the WH or Martha’s Vineyard? I’m guessing resuming his vacation…
ISIS HAS SEVERAL EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN MEMBERS…PRAYERS UP FOR JIM FOLEY’S FAMILY AND THE NEXT JOURNALIST AWAITING THE SWORD…INSTEAD OF ALLOWING ISIS TO CONTINUE AS USUAL…WE NEED TO STOP THEM NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES…AMERICA IS BETTER THAN THIS! I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN OUR FOREIGN POLICY.
What do you want the US to do that it hasn’t done? Start a new boots-on-the ground war in Iraq? And wind up with far more than just one journalists dead? Thousands of young soldiers, plus scores of reporters dying just to get revenge for one execution? Is that your idea of “stopping ISIS?”
PBO is already doing the drone strikes - he stressed that this won’t solve the problem in two weeks - it will take months. The people who are using this execution to agitate for a full blown war need to send their children to fight or go fight themselves.
???? Disappointed in our foreign policy? You’re starting to sound a lot like McCain…ISIS wasn’t a glint in a mamma’s eye until Iraq got blown to smithereens by GWB..opps sorry, wrong country! ISIS was BORN out of THAT MAN’S foreign policy!! I can understand your frustration and horror at the situation, but for crying out loud, sit down and take a breath! You’re beginning to sound like this is PBO’s fault too…which is categorically false. Explain yourself if you will, otherwise, this comment is just ignorant, inflammatory BS,

I hope people are seeing the media and the damage it’s doing to the integrity of this case. I’ve been saying from day one that the media is a HUGE part of the problem, they are actively obstructing justice. And I’m not just talking about FOX News or Right-wing radio…
STOP THE FEAR OVER THE JUSTICE…WITH ERIC HOLDER IN CHARGE ALL WILL WORK OUT AS IT SHOULD. YOU’D BETTER START WORRYING ABOUT ISIS…BECAUSE IF THEY ARE IN YOUR BACKYARD…A PROTEST WILL LOOK LIKE A KINDERGARTEN PARTY!
Methinks Sue’s been reading one-too many paranoia-inducing right wing drivel. The people who have the most to fear in their “backyards” are the poor minority residents who are terrorized by military policing on a daily basis. Far more of those residents get killed at the hands of police than journalists get killed at the hands of ISIS.
WE HAVE AMERICANS AND EUROPEANS JOINING ISIS AND FRANKLY WE NEED TO DO MORE TO GET RID OF THEM..MORE THAN LIKELY SPECIAL OPS. IMAGINE BEING THE PARENTS OF THESE JOURNALISTS…SHAME ON THOSE WHO DON’T THIN IT IS IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO STOP….IMAGINE BEING THE PARENTS OF CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN BEHEADED…IT IS TIME TO CUT THE HEAD OFF THE SNAKE…………………
Sorry, but I have a right to express my opinion while laying out a few facts about a very troubling situation in the US. Far more chronic and impactful than anything ISIS may or may not do. Eric Holder won’t be AG forever - in fact, he’s unlikely to be AG past 2014 or 2015.
But this pattern of shooting unarmed citizens execution style as been going on long before Holder came on the scene and will continue well after he leaves.
hopefruit. You are exactly right about the media desperation to move the Ferguson murder away from the truth.
Front page of the NYTimes seems to give credence to Cop Killer somehow justified. I was too angry to read the article.
Inside, the always hysterical always ignorant bitter drunk tries to dim the luster of the man she resents so much. Again, couldn’t read much of the article.
Sen. McCaskill started off with her true feelings and was persuaded to do the political backing of the Police State.
If there is any silver lining here it can only be—-just as it was at the Bundy ranch—-that the agenda of the USA is being revealed and it is weakening poor communities even further and establishing total dominance above them
Our beloved President knows what he is up against and conducting himself accordingly. As usual. Of course.
He will not do what the RW wants.
So they get crazier.
I hope this presidency can stem the hideous tide we see flowing in now. I remain hopeful.
Chip, hf, Seems like we all understand just what is happening here.
The leap I can’t make yet is to Why would anyone want Darren Wilson to get away with firing 6+ bullets into a surrendering teen?
How is this a win for any sentient being?
The answers or even guesses are too much to contemplate.
Thanks for sharing that. I actually heard him interviewed few days ago. Amazing for sure.
carolyn, re: PO and Malia and your daughter and her dad. Same here with our daughter and Daddy. She is also 43, almost 44! Yikes!! In the early 90’s when we lived in Fairfax, he needed to make a trip to TN to check on hiselderly mother. Can’t remember why, but I couldn’t go. (It was a long weekend deal.) Anyway, our daughter said she would go with him. They both shared when they got back and how they haardly haad the radio on, especially on the trip down because they talked and talked and talked. I asked about what? “Anything and everything.” Still love that story. :)
The fact that this dad was irritated enough to actually walk the walk to make the compassion point crystal clear to this children…was so awesome to me. Most people talk a good game, but they never actually follow through. He did, it a grand way and it was great:)
LOOOOOOVE the smiles on the faces of Malia and PBO……they are obviously in sync with each other. Love to see that loving father-daughter relationship! That’s just the way my husband and our daughter are when they’re together, and she’s now 43 :-)
Just a thought that’s been troubling me. The anger, fear, outrage, despair, depression and gut-wrenching grief that we’ve all been experiencing lately can take a big toll on our physical and mental health and I have seen many people here rightly reveal their deep anguish, heartache and tears. In the meantime, we all have personal challenges, exhaustion and worries to deal with even while campaigns around the country are heating up for the fall races. It’s going to be tough going in the weeks and months and ahead, so I think it’s crucial that we all pay special attention to keeping ourselves healthy. If the anger gets too overwhelming, step away or take a walk, or hug someone you love. If you feel it’s all hopeless, reach out to someone and take break. We’re all human and we’re all trying as hard as we can to do right by our families, our country and our beloved president. The beauty of checking in every day is that we all care about each other and lift each other up, no matter where in the world we come from or what we look like. So this is partly a thank you to fellow TODers and partly a wish that we remember to take care of ourselves and find whatever little ways we can to lift our spirits.
Thanks. Yesterday was with friends much of the day and having a dear friend over tomorrow for lunch. Think I will go to the pool this afternoon and relax.
Good morning folks
Did Malia keep her Dad company? Very nice gesture for a busy teen but then it’s clear that she loves her busy father.
Same thought ran through my mind. A very thoughtful gesture.
She probably has a calming effect on him.
I am sure that having some special time, just her and Dad, means a lot in their busy world.
Good Morning vetivera…earliest in the “Early Bird Chat” :-)
Enjoy your day!
Thanks swbluega. Sometimes I am just late for the overnight thread.
Morning vetivera24, morning everyone!
Morning Chips. You have a lovely day too!
Good Morning Chipsticks…TOD Family!!!
AMK, it’s nice to see the way losers like Palin are attracted to other losers. This Miller guy is, was and always will be bad news.
I read that the scum sheriff arpaio made a last minute push for this teabagger last week.

It’s Wednesday, TODobots – one day at a time! Good Day, everyone!

Is the white on white crime a culture thing?
exactly anniebella and if we were to look at the issue based on basic math, there are more “white on white” crime then “black on black” crime.
So that argument is BS and is not relevant to the underlying issue that cops cannot randomly shoot people because they feel like it.

Good morning everyone…found this feel good story to share:)

Hi, TN, heard it was your birthday. Have an absolutely wonderful day.
The fact that this dad was irritated enough to actually walk the walk to make the compassion point crystal clear to this children…was so awesome to me. Most people talk a good game, but they never actually follow through. He did, it a grand way and it was great:)
It’s your birthday??? Happy Birthday, tnmtngirl!!! Do whatever makes you happy today! Did hubby make it over the hard part of the AT?
Happy Birthday tnmtngirl!!! Hope you have a fabulous day.
Happy Birthday, tnmtngirl!
LOOOOOOVE the smiles on the faces of Malia and PBO……they are obviously in sync with each other. Love to see that loving father-daughter relationship! That’s just the way my husband and our daughter are when they’re together, and she’s now 43 :-)
Hey TOD….Please be sure to wish tnmtngirl, Happy Birthday!
Great advice :)
Happy 25th birthday tnmtngirl! :) Hope you have a blast today with fun, food, friends, etc..
