Rebecca Shabad: House GOP Panel: Defunding Immigration Order ‘Impossible’
It would be “impossible” to defund President Obama’s executive actions on immigration through a government spending bill, the House Appropriations Committee said Thursday. In a statement released by House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers’s (R-Ky.) office hours before Obama’s scheduled national address, the committee said the primary agency responsible for implementing Obama’s actions is funded entirely by user fees. As a result, the committee said the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) agency would be able to continue to collect fees and carry out its operations even if the government shut down. Therefore, the appropriations process cannot be used to “defund” the agency.”

I heard on Thom Hartman’s radio show this morning that people can write to the broadcasters to formally complain that they are NOT serving the public good by choosing not to cover the President’s speech tonight. That you can contact the FCC to make sure your complaint is on file with the Network. Serving the public good is a condition of them retaining their licenses. I think we should all write the Networks and complain to the FCC.

The St. Louis police officer who shot and killed 18-year-old Vonderrit Myers, Jr. last month was inadvertently identified by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department when his name was included in an evidence envelope when Myers’ body was delivered to the funeral home. The police department had intended to keep the officer’s name a secret in the aftermath of the shooting, claiming safety concerns. A lawyer for the Myers family publicly identified the officer as 32-year-old Jason H. Flanery, a six-year veteran of the force.
Jermaine Wooten, the lawyer who revealed Flanery’s name, spoke with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Wednesday regarding Flanery’s online history. It appears that many of the posts and comments Flanery has made on Facebook, YouTube and other websites reflect a right-wing ideology, with specific anger directed at the President and First Lady. He’s also made statements reflecting a desire to fire a large number of shots at anyone who may have shot first.

Quick landing here to promote something that probably was said earlier - To support President’s Obama immigration actions, PLAN TO WRITE TO NEWS OUTLETS TONIGHT and DO IT FAST!! I have had some luck getting letters published in the NY Times and Washington Post, and I have some tips that I really believe in:
1. In fact you can write your letter right now and make last-minute edits - basically you say you are thrilled that the President is taking these actions and you are behind him all the way.
2. Be ready to press “send” almost as soon as he finishes (look up the email addresses now). If you wait a few hours it will be too late for the media.
3. Language: use short, simple sentences. Say things in a very straightforward way. Don’t use sarcasm or irony.
4. Keep it short - one short paragraph is enough.
Give your full name, address, and phone contact information. When I wrote such letters I was contacted during work the next day on my cell phone. I was asked if I had also written to other news outlets on the subject. In one case I had and they asked me to retract my other letter! You can submit to several and see what happens.
I was also asked if I belonged to any organization involved in the issue, which I was (official in county Dems). They used that as an identifier when they published the letter. They might also ask if you have submitted letters to them before and/or had anything published.

Had something funny happen to me at the market today. A man walks up to me after seeing the President Obama/VP Biden sticker and a sticker for the ACA on my car and says “Are you glad you voted for Pres. Obama?” Like he couldn’t believe it. I said “Yes! ABC will broadcast the President’s message tonight. At the end of the local ABC news the speech was advertised, with the notice that the primetime programming would be presented whole after the speech. Phone calls worked!

Our local ABC news has plugged the President’s speech on the network twice that I’ve seen it . Said Primetime programming will be pushed about fifteen minutes up, but will be complete.
I agree that they shouldn’t be PUSHED into doing the right thing. But, since we know what they’re like, it is necessary that we push back on them. They do not want to become irrelevant. This whole episode is disgusting….and I remember when they refused to give him the time to speak on the Affordable Care Act. They thought they could get by with that again, but we are teaching them they can’t.
