Aaron Schock, who resigned as US Congressman on Tuesday night following media disclosures of his loose spending habits, met Narendra Modi thrice. These encounters were not free of controversy either.
The 33-year-old US Congressman from Illinois, who has come to personify slopping spending habits that violate legislative ethics and rules, is no stranger to controversy. Whether it is overcharging the government for his car mileage, having his office redone a la the sets of Downtown Abbey or billing taxpayers for a private plane ride to Chicago to watch a football game.
His two visits to India, both to meet Narendra Modi — first in 2013 when the latter was Gujarat chief minister and last August when he was prime minister — as well as his visit to New York City last year for Modi’s Madison Square Garden reception, have not been free of charges of financial impropriety either.
In March 2013, Schock and two US Congresswomen — Cynthia Lummis and Cathy M Rodgers — travelled to Gandhinagar to meet Chief Minister Modi (image, below) who, at that time, was persona non grata in the US.

murkan rwnj’s meeting up with our own rw’er pm. yet another reason why modi will never get my vote or my respect.
Hadn’t heard of this connection, so thanks for sharing it and I’m sorry about it. Schock is the one who’s persona non grata to me.
his being a corrupt thug is on him and his ‘voters’. you have nothing to be sorry about.
Well, it was to be expected that the GOP would be happy to congratulate Netanyahu. Pretty concerning, but not surprising at all, that the GOP hasn’t made any statement about Netanyahu saying that he didn’t want a 2 state solution.
Watch for the GOP to completely abandon the idea of a palestinian state. An idea that they THEMSELVES were supporting during the Bush presidency.
And watch them blame President Obama if Palestinians get more radicalized when they see their hope of a future state vanish.
Hopefully, this will be the one and only time this year I lower myself to type about this guy.
question is how did she (yes, she) get up there in the furst place without causing the disaster.
Latin American leaders back Venezuela over US spat.
Members of the Alba regional group expressed their support for Venezuela on Tuesday in the face of increasing tensions between the US and Venezuela.
At an emergency summit, Latin American left-wing leaders urged the US to repeal an executive order which declared Venezuela a threat to the national security of the US.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro stressed his country was no threat.
The two countries have been trading barbs for months.
Tension shot up after the US published an executive order on 9 March announcing sanctions on seven Venezuelan officials suspected by the US of committing human rights abuses.
In the order, US President Barack Obama stated that the situation in Venezuela, including “the government’s erosion of human rights guarantees (…) constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States”.
The wording of the order caused outrage not only with Venezuelan government officials, but also among its regional allies.
“Venezuela has no plans, did not have, nor will it ever have plans to attack the United States or hurt anyone,” Mr Maduro said at the Alba summit in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.
He received strong backing from the Cuban leader, Raul Castro.

https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2015/03/09/fact-sheet-venezuela-executive-order
Thx, read it. Still not convinced how their internal corruption is a national security threat to usa. If corruption is yardstick, then the entire world is a national security threat. It’s poor choice of words and a rare bloomer from PBO given the reaction from your southern neighbors.
I get where you’re coming from, but I think President Obama plans to walk the walk on this one, leveraging the situation step by step, through certain sanctions and with good intentions (our national security includes global security, economic security, etc.), maybe as an example for other countries in the hemisphere … and there may be a lot going on internally of which we’re not aware.
I certainly have none of the background knowledge. I do know that if it were Bush, he’d just invade Venezuela … and I would not be standing by him.
Agree!
#TrustBarack
good night
With ya on that … and goodnight, Bob!
A little more on the topic … and I plan to #TrustBarack on this one. I think this has been a long time coming.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said at a press briefing that despite Cuba’s defiance of the U.S. crackdown on rights abusers in Venezuela, the negotiations with Havana will not be affected.
“Discussions on the reestablishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba will continue as planned,” she said.
Psaki also responded to claims by Maduro that the United States is attempting to destabilize his government. The socialist leader assailed the sanctions as a “rude outburst” from Obama in a speech late Monday that lasted more than two hours. His approval ratings have plummeted in Venezuela after its economy entered a recession last year and citizens suffered from widespread shortages of basic goods.
“There are specific reasons why each of those individuals under the executive order were sanctioned,” Psaki said. “The United States remains an important trading partner, is actually Venezuela’s largest trading partner, and despite the statements to the contrary from Venezuelan officials, we were not promoting instability in Venezuela. Rather, we believe respect for democratic norms and human rights is the best guarantee of Venezuela’s stability, hence our executive order.”

given the way murka treats its own minorities and tolerates tyrant middle east regimes, time to lecture others is long past gone.
For two years, we get to trust the current President of the United States of America, which is exactly what I intend to do.
If he’s thought it through, if he’s willing to put his signature on it, then it’s to put America back on track towards being a figurative “good citizen of the world,” and its President a responsible “leader of the free world” … and those are a couple of the few hopes I have left about the state of our totally imperfect union.
Given the unified reaction from your southern neighbors, it does not seem to be well thought through.
We shall see how it goes, eh? Sometimes, leaders gotta lead, even if it’s not popular.
indians are struggling against pathetic pedestrian bowling attack. score should have been more than 80 by now.
EXCELLENT GATHERING OF TWEETERS NERDY….ME THINKS BIBI HAS STEPPED IN A PILE OF DUNG QUICKSAND…IT’S GOING TO BE VELLLLLLY INTERESTING AROUND HERE!…I LOVE MY ENERGIZER PBO…HAVE A WONDERFUL NIGHT AND SWEET DREAMS…TOD FAMILY…OFF TO THE PILLOW HERE…HOPE I SLEEP…I FELL ASLEEP EARLY…NOW AM WIDE AWAKE…GEESH!
indians are blowing it. losers.
I wouldn’t say that, thus far - but they need to pick up the run rate.
yup, at this rate they will get just about 200 to 220 and then they WILL lose, especially if rain brings in duckworth-lewis method. #losers
#notlosers yet
Weather getting worse I gather - but from the radar doesn’t look that it will last too long

aaand here comes the rains.
I still think (hope?) it’s moving across. Rain just stopped. The abc commentators agree with you on duckworth-lewis
they better. Outside of scoring 250 -280 from here onwards, only thing that will save us is a rain washout. Ironic considering that I asked bt to pray for rains for the ireesh.
Rather amazing that only the one match was lost due to rain - I blame climate change
and that happened with b’desh too. second time lucky for us?
What happens if washed out - is there a replay?
yup, they play again tomorrow.
I’m heading to living room to watch the game on big TV - back later
And …. not on the free to air TV - I sure don’t pay the RW bigots to watch cable - so back to listening online
packer tv?
It is - he sold the pay to air awhile ago - not sure if he sold the cable - makes all his money out of casinos now! Nearly all the sport in Oz has gone to cable - hence I don’t see it. Listening online via ABC - like we used to in the 1950/60s when no TV
nothing like good ole radio commentary. Gotta imagine the play. :)
and the batsman in is Raina. 8-)
:)
Boom. Fucking cowards. Even up to now.
Yep. Really pisses me off when they use the President’s name to grab donations … but were nowhere during the election. Grrrrr.
Bottom line …
good night TOD
had to leave this little gift to all of you before departing …..
How hubris undermined the Iran nuclear deal
US senators’ open letter to the Iranian leadership over nuclear negotiations reveals breathtaking hubris and reminds us that not all dangerous ideologues reside in the Middle East
…
The problem with ideologues is that while they are ready to criticise others for their rigidly held viewpoints, they are rarely ready to recognise that they are equally rigid and intolerant.
…..
It must have been a long time since a deliberately provocative, and downright rude, open letter to the Iranian Supreme Leader was penned, and even longer since such a letter was supported with the signatures of 47 US senators.
…..
What the letter did reveal though, is the sort of hubris that only committed ideologues can demonstrate. The sort of hubris that precipitated the White House’s 2003 decision to invade Iraq as a precursor to a “flowering of democracy” among countries and cultures and within a region that few (if any) of the key decision-makers had any idea about. The sort of hubris that also depicts the nuclear negotiations as a bilateral negotiation between Washington and Tehran.

Good read.
Couple of RWNJs in the comments - I’ve started a “discussion” with one of them - probably should not bother.
You are brave.
Comments are moderated - have to have a polite discussion :) Some never get posted - might happen to mine
The man who was fed as a child via government assistance!
indians got a lucky break. ump called the no-ball wrongly.
indians are picking up the pace of scoring.
And .. I missed it (never take your eye off the ball at a cricket game!
yup. but apparently ump did.
Crowd 50,000 - MCG can hold 100,000 - biggest in Oz - no doubt why the final will be there. Last time it was full was the Centenary test 1977 - Last game before Packer ruined Oz cricket for the next 10 years.
Thank you NCLB - great pics - I had forgotten, Japan time is only 1 hour different from Australia - just 4pm over there
oh, you are far.
14 hours ahead of Eastern US - 1 hour ahead of Japan :) I can fly to California and get there before I leave here :)
Interesting.
big hitter raina gone. now it’s up to the cap’n, who is a big hitter himself. let’s see.
Rohit going for it
yup. 10 of 2 balls so far.
he has the record for highest ODI score over 250+
aaand 250 comes along with a six.
If they both start doing this - big total - Dohni getting 1s - maybe giving away the bat to his partner
If they don’t score 300, losers.
gone!
yup. 30 runs off 3 overs? doubtful now.
seems if Dhoni stays away from the strike they might do it
and he has the reputation as the best finisher in the game. :)
Jadeja this time - and some not very good fielding
yup. b’deshis literally dropping the ball. #panic
another gone
16 runs off the 46th over. 300 runs is doable
rohit sharma on fire. one six, one four and still 3 more balls left.
and he is gone. great ball from the bowler.
Tie for the #gone :)
:)
aaand the cap’n is gone. One over left. 4 runs needed for 300. doable.
#tied again!
:)
wifey unit glaring. lunch time. stick around, will ya?
So I have to cook the dinner - woman’s work is never done - sigh
:)
Hope the 2nd innings makes it a game - back later
#tied again. we gotta stop doing this. :)
Great minds - teaching the US the finer points of the game :)
Dropped! Can give lots of runs to the fielding at this stage.
aaand the 300 comes up.
b’deshis lost the plot after bowling so well for 35 overs.
2nd consecutive 300 from the indians in MCG.
1st wicket gone. He was starting to look dangerous too.
and the 2nd wkt gone. stupid runout.
indians need a wicket NOW.
and the 3rd wicket is gone, the real danger man.
And I swung by to check 4/90 - disappointing cause it was 0/32 when I last looked - good play by India
Yup. They have come back well after a poor start. If the RR goes over 8, we are winning this.
and the 4th wicket is gone. b’deshis are screwed now.
5th wicket gone. 104/5. Tigers are toast now.
6 down. 139/6. Only 15 more overs to score 164. not.gonna.happen.
indians are dragging this on & on. finish them off already.
Moooooooorning!
