Aaron Schock, who resigned as US Congressman on Tuesday night following media disclosures of his loose spending habits, met Narendra Modi thrice. These encounters were not free of controversy either.

The 33-year-old US Congressman from Illinois, who has come to personify slopping spending habits that violate legislative ethics and rules, is no stranger to controversy. Whether it is overcharging the government for his car mileage, having his office redone a la the sets of Downtown Abbey or billing taxpayers for a private plane ride to Chicago to watch a football game.

His two visits to India, both to meet Narendra Modi — first in 2013 when the latter was Gujarat chief minister and last August when he was prime minister — as well as his visit to New York City last year for Modi’s Madison Square Garden reception, have not been free of charges of financial impropriety either.

In March 2013, Schock and two US Congresswomen — Cynthia Lummis and Cathy M Rodgers — travelled to Gandhinagar to meet Chief Minister Modi (image, below) who, at that time, was persona non grata in the US.

Well, it was to be expected that the GOP would be happy to congratulate Netanyahu. Pretty concerning, but not surprising at all, that the GOP hasn’t made any statement about Netanyahu saying that he didn’t want a 2 state solution.

Watch for the GOP to completely abandon the idea of a palestinian state. An idea that they THEMSELVES were supporting during the Bush presidency.

And watch them blame President Obama if Palestinians get more radicalized when they see their hope of a future state vanish.

Latin American leaders back Venezuela over US spat.

Members of the Alba regional group expressed their support for Venezuela on Tuesday in the face of increasing tensions between the US and Venezuela.

At an emergency summit, Latin American left-wing leaders urged the US to repeal an executive order which declared Venezuela a threat to the national security of the US.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro stressed his country was no threat.

The two countries have been trading barbs for months.

Tension shot up after the US published an executive order on 9 March announcing sanctions on seven Venezuelan officials suspected by the US of committing human rights abuses.

In the order, US President Barack Obama stated that the situation in Venezuela, including “the government’s erosion of human rights guarantees (…) constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States”.

The wording of the order caused outrage not only with Venezuelan government officials, but also among its regional allies.

“Venezuela has no plans, did not have, nor will it ever have plans to attack the United States or hurt anyone,” Mr Maduro said at the Alba summit in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.

He received strong backing from the Cuban leader, Raul Castro.

Thx, read it. Still not convinced how their internal corruption is a national security threat to usa. If corruption is yardstick, then the entire world is a national security threat. It’s poor choice of words and a rare bloomer from PBO given the reaction from your southern neighbors.

          March 19, 2025 at 12:26 am

I get where you’re coming from, but I think President Obama plans to walk the walk on this one, leveraging the situation step by step, through certain sanctions and with good intentions (our national security includes global security, economic security, etc.), maybe as an example for other countries in the hemisphere … and there may be a lot going on internally of which we’re not aware.

I certainly have none of the background knowledge. I do know that if it were Bush, he’d just invade Venezuela … and I would not be standing by him.

        ***

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said at a press briefing that despite Cuba’s defiance of the U.S. crackdown on rights abusers in Venezuela, the negotiations with Havana will not be affected.

“Discussions on the reestablishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba will continue as planned,” she said.

Psaki also responded to claims by Maduro that the United States is attempting to destabilize his government. The socialist leader assailed the sanctions as a “rude outburst” from Obama in a speech late Monday that lasted more than two hours. His approval ratings have plummeted in Venezuela after its economy entered a recession last year and citizens suffered from widespread shortages of basic goods.

“There are specific reasons why each of those individuals under the executive order were sanctioned,” Psaki said. “The United States remains an important trading partner, is actually Venezuela’s largest trading partner, and despite the statements to the contrary from Venezuelan officials, we were not promoting instability in Venezuela. Rather, we believe respect for democratic norms and human rights is the best guarantee of Venezuela’s stability, hence our executive order.”

For two years, we get to trust the current President of the United States of America, which is exactly what I intend to do.

If he’s thought it through, if he’s willing to put his signature on it, then it’s to put America back on track towards being a figurative “good citizen of the world,” and its President a responsible “leader of the free world” … and those are a couple of the few hopes I have left about the state of our totally imperfect union.

How hubris undermined the Iran nuclear deal

US senators’ open letter to the Iranian leadership over nuclear negotiations reveals breathtaking hubris and reminds us that not all dangerous ideologues reside in the Middle East

The problem with ideologues is that while they are ready to criticise others for their rigidly held viewpoints, they are rarely ready to recognise that they are equally rigid and intolerant.
    …..
It must have been a long time since a deliberately provocative, and downright rude, open letter to the Iranian Supreme Leader was penned, and even longer since such a letter was supported with the signatures of 47 US senators.
    …..
What the letter did reveal though, is the sort of hubris that only committed ideologues can demonstrate. The sort of hubris that precipitated the White House’s 2003 decision to invade Iraq as a precursor to a “flowering of democracy” among countries and cultures and within a region that few (if any) of the key decision-makers had any idea about. The sort of hubris that also depicts the nuclear negotiations as a bilateral negotiation between Washington and Tehran.
    …..
