Great round-up as usual, Nerdy!!!
Thanks, LP.
Good morning amk and congrats :)
Another exceptional round-up, NW. Thank you!!!
Thanks, Bob.
“COSTA RICA’S ENERGY utility hasn’t burned any fossil fuel this year. None. The country of nearly 4.9 million people ran on nothing but renewable power for 75 days, a goal that many richer countries—including and especially the United States—can only dream of. So how did Costa Rica do it? Smart infrastructure investments and an assist from an unlikely ally: climate change. Like Paraguay, Colombia, Brazil, and many other Latin American countries, Costa Rica gets most of its energy—about 80 percent—from hydroelectric plants. Damming rivers has environmental consequences too, obviously, but the energy from the resulting power plants is carbon-free. Hydropower is also more reliable and easier to scale up than existing wind and solar technologies….
….Here’s where climate change comes in. Almost all climate models predict that “one effect of climate change will be a concentration of rainfall, and as a consequence of that, longer periods of drought,” explains Walter Vergara, a climate change specialist focused on Latin America at the World Resources Institute. Especially in tropical countries like Costa Rica, more rain will fall in less time…continued”

“Israel will begin to deport Eritrean and Sudanese citizens to countries in Africa – even without their consent – under a new policy in the works at the initiative of the Israel Population and Immigration Authority.”
A fantastic collection Nerdy, thank you ENORMOUSLY!
The Purvi Patel case is simply beyond belief.
1. Thanks, Chiparooo.
2. The case is horrific. They are giving rights to a fetus. A fetus!!!! The fetus was dead. She did not murder a living human being but somehow, she’s charged with feticide. It’s barbaric. I’m sure there are other states where this law is on the books, just like there are other states that have similar anti-LGBT laws like Indiana. Some legislators want to practically make being a woman a crime in America.
It’s astonishing, no civilized state/country on earth would charge a woman under these circumstances, mind-blowing.
This situation is a whole lot of wrong. I feel for the young woman who made bad decisions and got caught up in draconian laws.
To her it was the right decision at the time. She didn’t have hindsight and obviously had no idea about this insane law.
I just got home & saw the details - Women in Indiana would have 2 options - vote this government OUT or leave the state. Those who live by men’s rules are not going to do the former so any who can should do the latter. What an excuse for democracy is this state.
DRAWSKO POMORSKIE, Poland — The line of 4-year-olds clutched hands tightly in their matching, reflective yellow vests and stared open-mouthed at the hovering Chinook helicopters kicking up grit last week in the school parking lot. Shy teenage girls took pictures beside grinning American soldiers while Polish families clambered over a line of Stryker armored vehicles. “I am very worried and afraid about what Russia might do next,” said Urszula Wronko, 69, a retired postal worker who watched in a bright red jacket and beret from a nearby stone bench, her shaggy dog squirming happily in her lap. “It gives us all comfort to see these American soldiers and to know they are here for us.” Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commander of United States Army forces in Europe, said the idea for Operation Dragoon Ride — part public relations event, part training exercise, part shot across the Russian bow — came to him slowly, over several months…..
…Normally, the American equipment would be loaded aboard rail cars and shipped in the dead of night while the soldiers flew back to their base in Germany. But General Hodges thought, this time, they would drive the 120 armored vehicles, one lumbering mile after another, accompanied by more than 500 American troops. And not just drive, but take a meandering, 1,100-mile trek through six countries, stopping in towns and villages along the way to mingle with local people and reassure allies by showing that the American military’s presence was more than a rumor. It would also, he said, further demonstrate — “to Russians and anyone else” — that the American military was just as capable of moving quickly across great distances, in its case even across national borders….By the time it is finished, Operation Dragoon Ride, which began a week ago in the Baltics and is due to conclude later this week, will be the longest such movement the United States Army has made across Europe since Gen. George S. Patton diverted his Third Army to relieve Bastogne, Belgium, in 1944….continued”
My mayor is scared shitless about the amount of $$$ our city revenues are going take a hit:
WASHINGTON — The Republican mayor of Indiana’s largest city is working to stem the backlash from a new “religious freedom” law, breaking with members of his own party in order to reassure companies that Indianapolis is still a good place to do business….”Our city thrives because we have welcomed and embraced diversity,” said Ballard. “RFRA threatens what thousands of people have spent decades building. And I won’t allow that to happen without a fight.”….Ballard also signed an executive order Monday reaffirming that groups doing business with the city must still abide by its human rights ordinance, which bars discrimination on the basis of categories that include sexual orientation and gender identity.
….”Residents, visitors and our workforce have always been and continue to be protected by our city’s human rights ordinance,” said Ballard. “Hoosier hospitality is alive and well in Indy, and it will be extended to everybody.” But Indianapolis is already getting hit with the consequences of RFRA. The labor union American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees announced Monday it would be pulling its 2015 Women’s Conference, scheduled for October, out of the city. The band Wilco cancelled its May 7 concert, calling the new law “thinly disguised legal discrimination.” And Angie’s List, which is run by a former Republican aide, said it will be canceling a $40 million expansion of its headquarters in Indianapolis.
No, Mayor of Indianapolis, that is not good enough. You need to pressure your Gov to recinde the whole law
A moment of sanity in 2008 and then indiana goes back to its deep shit red state?

Solar Impulse, the fuel-free aeroplane, has completed the fifth leg of its round-the-world flight.
The vehicle, with Bertrand Piccard at the controls, touched down in Chongqing in China just after 17:30 GMT.
It had left Mandalay in Myanmar (Burma) some 20 hours previously.
The intention had been to make the briefest of stops in Chongqing before pushing on to Nanjing in the east of the country, but that strategy has been abandoned because of weather concerns.
The team will now lay over in southwest China until a good window opens up on the east coast at some point during the coming days.
Getting to the city of Nanjing would set up Solar Impulse to make its first big ocean crossing - a five-day, five-night flight to Hawaii.
///
Solar Impulse has set two world records for manned solar-powered flight on the journey so far.
The first was for the longest distance covered on a single trip - that of 1,468km between Muscat, Oman, and Ahmedabad, India.
The second was for a groundspeed of 117 knots (216km/h; 135mph), which was achieved during the leg into Mandalay, Myanmar, from Varanasi, India.
http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-32110747
I eagerly look forward to its successful completion. Amazing stuff. Endurance test for both the plane and the man.
Thanks for bringing this here. I’d completely forgotten they were doing this! Wishing them well.

OMG that law in Indiana IS insane- the woman getting 20 years in prison for basically having a miscarriage IS a miscarriage.. we may as well just burn her at the stake and go all the way medieval.
I can’t believe it either. I am still seething about that one and hope she gets let go and sues the fucking shit out of them.
I just can’t stop shaking my head at all the bs anymore.
Superlative Round of Tweets…so much to digest and understand…some are simply awesome others are heartbreaking,…
like the AL Supreme Court Decision of mandatory sentencing of juveniles to life without parole
.what is the point of a decision if it is not applied across the board…just imagine that a court overturns a previous ruling but then says that it is only counts moving forward…it does not correct the error of the past….it matters who is sitting on the bench deciding our lives…we must vote… we must see the connection between our vote…and these kind of decisions
Thanks, PF. You’re right. That decision is appalling.
Well, work no longer allows e to visit here, so I will be much more sporadic in my attendance.
I am thrilled to see Tammy Duckworth running to get that so called moderate Kirk out of the Senate. Already made my first contribution to her campaign.
Now, I wonder if I should run for her vacated House seat since I live in that district.
Go for it Japa!
So sorry you can’t drop in during the day, make flippin’ sure you do outside work hours!
That’s just it. Sometimes I have more work to do at home tan at work. But I will try.
Well, as long as you try, former future former future former future former future Other Half.
Is kirk retiring?
No, he is the Republican and I have not heard if he is or not.
We will donate to your campaign, Japa!
You’ve got a volunteer election team here, if you do, japa!
Thanks, but I probably won’t. I really wouldn’t want to even be in the same chamber with John Boehner or the same city as Ted Cruz.
Besides, Mrs. Japa would probably kill me if I ever tried to do something like that. Though, I have to admit, I think I would be a pretty damn good Congressman.
Wow, don’t know if you were following the nasty business of Angry Black Lady being stalked and abused by an absolute psycho on Twitter, Facebook and elsewhere - looks like she and her friends have identified him, he’s just graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. I saw a video of him that they posted, he is seriously scary, I just hope the damn law can do something with him.
I saw that over the weekend. The dude fits the definition of a psychopath. Glad that he’s been exposed. A lot of people are the safer for it.
I have no clue how the law works on this Nerdy, and I don’t know if he made direct threats against ABL that would allow action be taken against him, but that video shows him to be friggin’ deranged. ABL knows the law, I just hope she can get it to work for her here, the guy is dangerous.
He’s now gone to her Facebook and is threatening her. It’s frightening. I sincerely hope the law can help her and others who’ve been targeted and continue to be targeted.
I was reading through some of ABL’s screenshots of comments he made, good gawd almighty. What the **** is it with his obsessive hate?
Lindsey Graham is a disgraceful American. Rather than support President Obama and back policies that would help bring peace to an increasingly violent region of the world, Graham is betraying his country and his president by openly pledging his allegiance to the leader of a foreign nation. That sounds an awful lot like treason. Basically, Graham is saying that no matter what President Obama does to bring peace to the region, Graham and his fellow Republicans will work to undermine his administration and the will of the American people on behalf of a foreign leader. That is not only dangerous to our democracy, it’s a threat to the lives of our servicemen and women since Congress has the power to declare war even if the president doesn’t believe war is necessary.
Whose responsibility is it to hold these legislators accountable…this is really unprecendented
Treason
Ok, I have to ask. Why mcangry asshat was at the kennedy event? Who invited him? And why?
I think in his “saner” days, he was friends with Ted Kennedy. I think - I might be wrong…
There are days when your phone starts flashing with messages and you are afraid to get it because you have a nagging suspicion that the messages can’t be good.
Today, was one of those days and I am ending the day on a sad note.
About six hours ago messages flashed on my phone from my country of birth and other places.
As suspected, I and my friends ended the day on a sad note.
A dear friend and colleague (Ms. Joan Kagezi) was gunned down this afternoon (evening time locally since the ancestral home is 7 hours ahead).
One of my sisters and I have known and have been friends Joan since I was five years old and we were in the same class in a boarding catholic school.
We went through the same schools together until we finished undergraduate degree.
Professionally, we choose different paths – she chose to become a lawyer and raise her family at home. Personally, we remained close friends.
As she rose through the ranks of public service in her legal profession, she was assigned some of the most sensitive cases in the nation – prosecuting terrorist and perpetuators of war crimes. This is especially tricky in nation were some of the accused may be highly connected and there is minimal respect for the rule of law.
Early reports indicate that she was shot today by gunmen who are probably directed by Al Shabab – the terrorist group based out of Somalia - it has claimed early responsibility for her death. She was heading home at the end of her work day.
We, her friends and colleagues are shocked and devastated! Seeing claims of her death being flashed across the different platforms of the world’s media makes the truth of her demise inescapable.
We are wondering WHY the government did not provide protection for her given the case she was prosecuting in which terrorists bombed ordinary citizens watching World Cup.
I can’t imagine how her precious kids and family are doing this evening.
Please, keep her and family in your thoughts. Thanks

{{{{{ gcl <3 Joan <3 }}}}} I am sorry for your loss.
So very sorry. Blessings for peace and comfort.
GlobalcitizenLinda, I’m so sorry about your friend’s murder. My condolences to you, her family, her friends and the many people she must have helped.
Very, very sad GCL. My sympathies to you and her family & friends.
There are some TODers who are following a guy who has been stalking and harassing women for years. He’s just been exposed.
Heads up, Bob. You’re following him
https://twitter.com/M_Shale/followers_you_follow
Thanks NW. Blocked now. Would never have known since I’m not in the loop with the stalking of ABL but regret that she and others have been abused.
You’re welcome.
On a lighter note, thank you Nerdy for introducing me to Trevor Noah- LOVED him, my kind of comedy :) :)
:)
HEADS UP
Go check the list and unfollow. Then inform others you know who are following this psychopath.
Didn’t twitter used to have a report button for stalking and abusing?
But this guy kept getting banned and kept coming back with endless new accounts. A complete nutter.
Can’t the twitter do a IP address ban, if it wanted to?
I’m clueless (hush) about how these things work, but so far they haven’t stopped him. I’d be less worried about him on Twitter than in real life, to be honest.
true.
I’d be worried about him on Twitter and in real life, Chiparoo. A guy on my timeline had a stalker and he did everything Twitter says to do and they did nothing. The stalker guy showed up at the victim’s house with a knife and other weapons. Horrific.
OMG, you guys be careful out there!
*Free Eric Holder* wristbands at Justice? Fabulous, NW! We must watch to see if the President starts wearing one, too.
:)
Evening guys.
Just catching up on what I missed on the interwebs today. I’ve been busy editing my videos from the Stevie Wonder tour last week for my blog post. it took me basically a full week to finish the video edits and to write up the blog post on the Songs In The Key Of Life tour last week in NOLA.
I don’t know how you guys do it all day every day Chips et al…It took me a week to do just one post…lol
So go ahead and check it out. Please excuse my video recording skill, I’m no Spielberg…lol. Also please ignore the talking between me and my friend…lol. We had running commentary all night, but not loud enough to distract from the recording. So go ahead, to the youtube playlist, close your eyes and imagine you were there.

Sense of history as Iran nuclear talks go to the wire.
In a world where all too many conflicts are in search of solution there is a palpable sense history could be made here.
If a framework for an Iranian nuclear deal is agreed this week in this serene Swiss setting of Lausanne, it could pave the way for one of the most significant, but most sensitive, accords in decades.
“Since World War Two, there has been no precedent for multilateral diplomacy resolving a complex conundrum in a non-zero sum fashion without a bullet fired,” says Ali Vaez, an Iran analyst with the International Crisis Group.
///
Some Iranians reach back to another history and look to turn its page in the gilded halls of Lausanne’s Beau-Rivage Palace hotel.
“From 1813 on, Iran’s interaction with world powers has largely been one of continuous defeats,” says Trita Parsi, founder and president of the Washington-based National Iranian American Council.
“This could be the first time in 200 years that, without a war, Iran would emerge from a conflict without losing.”
Mr Parsi argues that Iran’s hardliners who remain deeply suspicious of the West, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, could find ways to hail it as their success.

The history making is palpable. They’re so close. I hope they succeed.
Thank you Nerdy. A great roundup of tweets. You are amazing.
Thanks, V.
NE, thanks for posting the great stories on Jazz and Mo’Ne
Thank you for reading them, GGail.
I might actually purchase a subscription to my local paper if they keep this up:
A little gift for Chipsticks  ….GN folks!
Sometimes, I really despise some people who call themselves progressives. Some of these Unite Blue folks are vile.
Go get em girl, but be careful <3
Agree, Gail.
NW, please be cautious.
Karen Civil…… Oh My!
In_DEED, Bill!!
Will likely not be able to comment until Wed evening or Thurs morning because of enormous work demands. Will try to RT tweets on various issues, but that’s likely all the presence I’ll have at TOD (in the sidebar) until Thursday morning.
Take care everyone.
#TrustBarack
Take care Bob - hope the busy means expanding business - but you will be missed.
That story has been completely repudiated as bogus by participants in the direct talks. The nuclear stockpiles are not an issue.
yet again the media working with Israel to push the country into war.
Mooooooooorning!
