Amy Lynn Smith: Life With Diabetes Is Sweeter Thanks To Obamacare
When Alexander Star was 15 years old, he thought he was the picture of health, especially after he made the varsity basketball team. But when he told one of his teachers he needed to go to the bathroom every 10 minutes, she rightly told him he should be checked for diabetes. Frequent urination is a classic warning sign. When the doctors tested Star’s blood glucose level, it was 1,300 mg/dL – dangerously high considering that even in people with diabetes the goal is to keep blood glucose levels between about 100 and 150 mg/dL. “The doctors wondered why I wasn’t in a coma,” says Star, who is now a 29-year-old recording artist/songwriter living in Florida. “That was the beginning of my journey as a type 1 diabetic.”
He was covered under his father’s insurance plan until he turned 26 – when he suddenly found himself without health insurance he could afford. “The COBRA plan I was on shot up from $120 a month to $512 a month for the exact same plan, a cost that was not do-able for me,” Star says. Fortunately, the Obamacare marketplace opened up soon after and he enrolled in a new plan. “If it wasn’t for Obamacare, I don’t know how I’d be capable of taking care of myself,” Star says. “Even if I had a lot of money, before Obamacare they could still decline me because I have a pre-existing condition.” Star signed up for a plan with better coverage and more personal attention than he received from his previous plan. His premiums are around $150 a month and he doesn’t pay anything extra for his insulin pump or continuous blood glucose monitor – diabetes management options his previous provider never even told him about.

A-A’s especially after Bill’s remarks about Barack’s run being a “fairy tale.” were fired up and fierce. It got downright ugly in SC between supporters of Hills and Barack. This was just before the Florida primary and I finally made up my mind to take a chance on the “Renegade” and lobbied my family members to do so as well. My sibs and cousins went for Barack while the generation just above us went for Hillary. Of course, everyone came around by the general election and were all out for the “skinny kid with the funny name.”

Note - my grandpa made it to 99.5. Sadly, died of a stroke 6 months before the big 100th birthday party we were planning for him. He attributed his longevity to many friends, exercise (golfing many times per week), a loving family, and a creative outlet (photography). I am amused by this photo of him in his teeny yellow Speedo doing a headstand on his roof. It was a tradition for every decade birthday. My sister’s first baby was born on his 100th birthday, so the family circle was completed.
My staunch Iowa Democrat Grandpa lived to 94, days short of his 95th. Wish he was around to set some of those less than intelligent current Iowans straight! Spent 10 days in Iowa last summer and was stunned by some I know and their racist, anti-gay, anti health care, anti everything unless it was all about their church and beliefs. I would never call them Christians.

My Obamacare story: 2nd year that there has not been an increase in my premiums (I am not of the age for medicare). No extra costs for screenings, annual check-ups, and flu shots, as well such low costs for meds that they are almost free. I live in Florida under the Scott (medicare fraud) regime where medicaid has not been expanded. Hopefully those suffering through lack of healthcare will finally get themselves to the polls during mid-term elections and get rid of him and his ilk as the people of Louisiana did.

Was listening to Make it Plain on my home about an hour ago. Mark was doing an interview with some guy from DFA (Democracy For America). It was ALL about Bernie. His endorsements from some of the labor unions, all the ways DFA is helping him-raise $$$$$$$, boots on the ground, etc., etc. When he talked about Bernie’s stance on the banks, inequality, health care, he said, “One thing is for sure. Bernie has a proven track record on these so we know he will deliver.” I laughed aloud!!! He said some other things that were just so unrealistic. All perfect examples of how his supporters are living in some “lala land.”
