BASIC KNOWLEDGE EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW
So - I managed to stay awake for the first few minutes of Bill Maher last night, and he made a comment about Rush & SlutGate, and I had a tiny revelation.
As a female I have been on The (birth control) Pill for most of my adult life, and it never occurred to me until Rush and his ignorant yammering, that there must be millions of people who actually not only have no idea how it works, but HOW OFTEN YOU TAKE IT.
It’s now clear that Rush thinks it’s like Viagra, in that you take it when you want to have sex. There is so much to say to this, but it’s starting to feel like making fun of someone who is handicapped.
Now before all of you who KNOW what’s up with the pill hurt yourselves from laughing at the obvious, stop and think about it – A LOT of people have no clue.
Sex Education is mostly NOT taught in the schools any more and the biology of The Pill would most likely be the last thing discussed even if it were. There are plenty of people who have no reason to know the mechanics of The Pill.
I’m even sure that there are many MEN who have that QUEASY GENE when it comes to Girlie Stuff™ and cannot, in all their macho glory, muster the bravery to go buy a box of tampons at the local supermarket.
So, for the record, allow me to explain, just in case you THINK you know, or have someone that needs explaining TO - you can send them the following explanation:
THE PILL FOR DUMMIES:
Hopefully, most of you have seen photos of a pack of PILLS. They come in many doses, but here is the basic, one month supply:
YES, those are days of the week next to each one. In general, it’s a pack of 28 pills. 21 pills have estrogen, and 7 pills are sugar/nothing pills, so you get into the habit of taking one pill every single morning when you wake up. If you do not do this, your chance of failure goes WAY UP.
It’s surprising that Rush’s ignorance in how the pill works, that he has no offspring after four marriages. It’s also obvious he pays zero attention to how often his wives take their own medication.
When I started on the pill, I was instructed to take the first REAL pill (estrogen) the first Sunday after the first day of my period. From then on YOU CANNOT SKIP A DAY. Once you have taken all 21 days of your estrogen pills, your should then start your period the following Tuesday or Wednesday after you begin the sugar pills.
The dosing of estrogen into the female body tricks the system into thinking it’s pregnant, so ovulation stops. A sperm cannot fertilize a non-existent egg. After the last of the 21 days of estrogen pills are taken, the body realizes it’s not pregnant, and menses occurs. Just as the cycle resets, the estrogen pills are resumed, the body thinks it’s pregnant, and again, no ovulation stakes place.
This means you need ONE PILL A DAY, EVERY DAY, FOREVER, unless you want to have a baby, or you hit menopause. You need a new 28 day supply EVERY MONTH.
It’s NOT anywhere CLOSE to being like Viagra. It’s also cheaper than Viagra, and thousands cheaper than pregnancy, and actual BIRTH.
A female does not experience ovulation until at least 10 days after The Pill is stopped. If the female continues the medication, there is only a 7-day break. So a woman on the pill constantly for years will not ovulate that entire time. Stand by for studies that show more women are going through delayed menopause due to decades of being on The Pill.
This is yet another example of why men like Rick Santorum are outright dangers to our society. Anyone who wants to abolish public education, mocks and belittles getting a university degree, and proudly displays their ignorance in every public square possible, is not only a danger to themselves, but presents a clear and present danger to society as a whole.
Basic chemistry of The Pill should be knowledge as common as making a fire. It should be taught in SCIENCE AND BIOLOGY, (along with the fact regular coffee contains more caffeine than espresso because the beans are run though water, not steamed.) Practical knowledge you can USE in your daily life.
Reproductive science and how our bodies work shouldn’t be a mystery. The Dark Ages ended 1200 years ago. Anyone who wants to take us back there, needs to be shunned and laughed out of the public square, not encouraged to run for President of the United States.
