the team

CBS: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid plans to name Sen. Patty Murray of Washington as co-chair of the deficit reduction committee tasked with finding at least $1.2 in federal government savings by October, a Democratic aide tells CBS News.

The aide said Reid will also name Democratic Sens. Max Baucus of Montana and John Kerry of Massachusetts to the committee.

…. The committee will ultimately be made up of 12 members – three Senate Democrats, three Senate Republicans, three House Democrats and three House Republicans. The party leadership in each chamber appoints the members. The other co-chair of the committee will be named by House Speaker John Boehner.

All the members of the committee must be appointed by August 16, and the committee must hold its first meeting by September 16…..

Love love love Patty Murray. She’s a scrapper and a fighter. John Kerry too has been on the ball these past few weeks and has had PBO’s back in congress. I’m not completely sold on Baucus; after the his role in the healthcare debates. Super frustrating. But crossing my fingers that there’ll be real progress made. Although that depends on the GOP members picked for the supercommittee.

I forgot to mention John Kerry. He definitely deserves it. I am sure the whiners are say, but they are not REAL liberals. WATBs.

I’m not sold on Bacus at all, he was so difficult on the HC bill:-( I’m not sure why he was chosen. I see him as trouble, and perhaps anti- Obama :-(. I don’t like the Idea of him being on that committee 😦

Heads up guys, just got this tweet from @whpresscorp: obama headed on a “three day economic bus tour” next week, stops in minnesota, iowa and illinois, white house says. #2012

Personally, I can’t wait to see President Obama out and about connecting with the people, highlighting the phenomenal legislative policies his administration has put into place, talking about jobs and what he has done to set the ball rolling; like the multiple trade deals stuck in congress due to GOP intransigence, the patent bill holed up in Congress which reduces patent waiting, filing, registering, and owning time from 3 years to 1 year, the infrastructure initiative he has on the horizon but isn’t getting traction in congress due to GOP blockheadedness, the manufacturing initiatives he has on the horizon but GOP won’t quit their pettyness and appropriate funds for it. Can’t wait to see him moving with that boundless phenomenal energy he has, the charismatic smile, the warmth and actual personality (unlike Romney) so that people will see he’s not the demon the GOPTeabaggers make him out to be. Should be a very interesting and fun three days for us Obamabots. 😀

Posted this on the last thread. Please read:

Dear TODers, I haven’t been this angry since the morning I woke up and the media had President Obama’s long form birth certificate splayed all over their networks.

That rightwing rag, Politico, has put out a hit piece on President Obama and his team, claiming they are planning to attack Mitt Romney personally.

I just watched Chris Matthews on Hardball and he was pushing this story HARD! Pushing the meme that Obama is going to “swiftboat” Mitt Romney like Bush & his cronies swiftboated Senator Kerry. He had on that guy from the CBN who took it further, claiming that the use of the term “weird” by Obama people to describe Romney was an attack on his Mormonism.

Can you believe this? Can you imagine a Barack Obama “swiftboating” anyone and especially based on his/her religion?! It’s disgusting! What it is, is a swiftboat of the President himself!

This is the Barack Obama who refused to indict his 2006 Senate opponent on revelations of infidelity. When asked to comment on the news during the campaign, Barack said he wished the guy and his family well, hoped they were able to resolve their problems, and that his opponent could get back to the campaign soon.

When it came out that Palin’s daughter was pregnant, he said, “Our kids are off limits!” He stood up for the Alaskan Twit and said, “Who am I to judge? My mother had me when she was 18.”

This notion that Barack Obama is “afraid” of Mitt “Flip-Flop-A-Day” Romney, so he’s going to malign his character is ridiculous! Barack Obama who went up against the “inevitable” Hillary Clinton and never a personal attack. Barack Obama who went up against John “War-Hero-Decades-of-Experience” McCain and never a personal attack. That Barack Obama is now afraid of an empty suit like Mitt Romney? Give me a freaking break!

I’m begging you to help push bag against this awful story. Some of you might think it’s nothing, but I do. Romney is already using it to raise campaign funds. Watch it spread on the news like wildfire. Watch Joe Scumbag yap on about it tomorrow and every rightwing media outlet run with it. But, basically, it matters to me because this is antithetical to who Barack Obama is. It’s a lie and another attempt to smear him. It’s projection from the rightwing and the leftwing is doing nothing to push back and call foul.

Write to that CBN correspondent and tell him, Shame! Shame on him. He always seemed fair, and yet here he is spreading such vile lies about the President. Shame!

    • August 9, 2011 at 6:56 pm

It’s because the right know Romney is weird so they want to make any such attack synonymous with being a Mormon. The ones drawing that line are the ones slamming Mormonism. I mean Harry Reid is a Mormon – the Majority Leader of the Dem Controlled Senate and somebody President Obama campaigned for 3-4 times in his battle against Sharon Angle.

Romney is socially awkward around us commoners and a pandering fool. Is the ol faking a goosing Mormon Doctrine or something?

Those drawing the connection between “weird” being an attack on Mormonism are the ones attacking the religion.

      • August 9, 2011 at 7:01 pm

Just as the democratic strategist said the only people that will be attacking him on the basis of his religion are Bachman and Perry.

Hey Hachiko, I saw your tweet saying you were so mad and needed to go for a walk. I hope the walk somewhat helped. I too am furious at the politico hit piece. It is nothing but a hack job that hits below the belt. You are right that we need to call out Chris Matthews and others who run with this narrative. Because I bet you Joe Scarborough will run with this and milk it for what it is worth. I agree that we ALL need to pushback because Romney is already milking this for what it’s worth, releasing statement after statement and raking in money on these falsehoods. The idea that President Obama would stoop to such a scumbag level is preposterous and is an outright lie. People think that not watching these shows and burying one’s head in the sand is a wonderful sight to behold. If we don’t watch, we don’t know about these shameless lies and we walk about with our heads in the clouds. Everyone needs to wake up. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. Watching Chris Matthews run with a patently false hit piece and proclaim it sound journalism and then harshly berate and castigate President Obama made me madder than heck. I immediately tweeted the show; because hardball is a respected show and for them to give credibility to the politico piece of shit article, that cited unknown dem sources who were “super’ close to President Obama and the Obama Administration and lo and behold they all used the word “weird.” C’mon give me a break. Even a baby would recognize the article for the crap it is.

We all need to email, call, tweet, and write letters to Politico and Hardball because this story is already spreading like wildfire over the internet, newssphere, blogosphere, twitter and everywhere else. This kind of demonization on President Obama is horrific.

We all know from past behaviors Prez Obama is not vicious and does not do personal attacks. He respects people and argues policies. We also know lies and smears about him, who he is, and what he does is second nature to the GOP. I heard a similar cry this morning on NPR and was astounded. I would hope those who have gotten to know his behaviors would not believe those lies.

I am seeing the GOP Senators in WI ahead of the Dems except for one race right now. That is sad as they have worked so hard to get the people out to vote out the GOP Senators. I know they are heavily favored GOP districts. Hope the vote switches later on in the count. I heard Big Ed say earlier today if the Dems win PBO needs to hit the GOP hard instead of being a wimp. In some ways I think if the Dems do lose in WI maybe Big Ed will see just yelling and organizing does not necessarily work. Probably not though as he seem to just swing back and forth according to his feelings. He will probably just say it is because PBO didn’t vocally support WI that they lost. He doesn’t seem to get that making a National fight out of a state issue would turn more people against the Dem cause.

    • August 9, 2011 at 6:59 pm

This story is a plant by the Romney campaign with the help of politicol.

Like I said this is going to be a three front fight, on one front the media and on the second front the GOP and the last front the PLs.

I was mad all day about that, trust me, you’re not alone….more disgusted than mad actually.

After all the attacks on the President? The only thing that is off limit for them is the n word, that’s it!! Nothing else.

He’s a tar baby, anti-american, he wasn’t born here, he’s a Kenyan, Muslim, he hates America, he’s a socialist, a fascist, a dick, a pussy, he’s weak, a caver, he’s a ”boy”, a liar and on and on and on.

Now the corrupt Media is protecting Romney on the ”attacks” from the President’s side??…as if they would EVER attack his religion, no freaking way in hell, the President is a class act and respect all.

Just start with an anonymous source, probably from Romney side and that’s it….with some help from Greenwald, Hamsher and the angry left…and the media does the rest.

    • August 9, 2011 at 7:05 pm

thanks for expanding on this – I saw your tweets but didn’t know the details- I will write to Chris Matthews and msnbc.. very sickening that they use anything politico says- but then they have Mark Halperin on staff, no?

Anyone who ever trusts Matthews to be honest has not been paying enough attention imo.

And agree so strongly with you that Barack Obama has never and will never choose to or need to swiftboat anyone. I think they’re using this as a way to bring up Rev Wright (religion) again and remind folks that POTUS is black.. but lets face it they’ve been attempting to ‘swiftboat’ Barack Obama for years now.. and they lie at every turn. I will write, otherwise I don’t know what else to do.

I think what I heard was that Romney’s past buying of companies and firing people disassembling the company and sending the jobs abroad and Perry’s state standings would or could be used by the Obama re-election team. That all seems totally policy and history of performance based so is in keeping with Obama’s moral compass.

          August 9, 2011 at 11:53 pm

Okay, may I just say a few words of who we are talking about here. President Obama ‘s core does not go there. Let us be informed about the President. Have we ever seen, or heard the President say any evil, vile, hateful, hurtful thing about anyone’s personal or non-personal? Have we? I have not. First of all what would be the purpose of President Obama or any member of his campaign team to focus on something of this nature? Why? First, of all if you all will remember when President ran in 2008, what was his motto? Remember. He hates leaks, he hate attacking someone personal business including their spouse, and their children. He do not operate like that. Remember pages 43-44 of David Plouffe’s great book: ” The Audacity to Win.’ If not, I highly recommend each of us who are interested and focused on re-election this great President buy it or pull it off of your library shelf and read it NOW. This is not President Obama here. Come on people. Like the President said, “Do not let them hoodwink you.” President can use Romney’s record(believe me they are going to go after President Obama’s record for sure. Let us focus here. Yes, I think we should be angry, but do not allow our anger to get us off message and the goal. Do not allow them to get into our heads. We people get into you head, they win. President Obama does not do that, nor should we, his supporters. Now, I have nothing against watching Chris(to see what they are saying, so we can push back, but remember some fights are not worth fighting. Let us choose our fights. You know that the campaign will have a ‘fact smearing machine that they will put in place. So until then, those of us who are great at tweeting, get to work; those who write great letters, get to writing to the lacks of Chris, Politico etc., and those of us who can speak, get on the phones. Let us get a plan. Otherwise, these unfit people will have us up in the air flying like fools. Not us, okay. We have great problems to work on in this second term. We need the House back, we need Pelosi back and we need to add to the Senate. We also need to recapture the state governorships in many key states. We have our work cut out for us. Let us not get sidetrack in this mess. Plus we have people who are still upset with the Dems that they still do not have jobs, or have lost their homes, and their kids can’t go off to college. We have seniors very nervous. So we can’t allow Tweety to get us off of our game plan. Ed Rollins is smart at what he does, and Romney’s guy is good also. But we have Axe, and Plouffee, the best, and most of all, we have President Barack Obama. We have all we need beside the new voters. We have people who were only 16 when President won in 2008, we need those young people. We have kids who have just turn the age so they can vote. Let us not take our eyes off of the ball. We know what the character of our man, President Obama, right? If you do not or have not been watching and listening, you might need to move over to the circus crowd. i am saying all of this because a lot, and I mean a very , very, very, lot of garbage is going to start coming back up out of the garbage cans, and it will make your head swim and some of us might just not be able to keep up with the currents, so the rest of us need to be strong to pull two or three out of the water rather than let them go under. We can’t be distracted with this mess. Not now. We have too much invested into this entire thing. Do not believe these jokers. They are paid to lie, so they are liars at any cost. That is how shameful these people are. Now write, call, e mail, twit Tweety and Howard Fineman, Harold Ford, Joe, Mika and the entire gang, but do not waste precious time on this mess. Get some good books on President Obama, and who is best at writing about him than David Plouffe, after all he was the man’s campaign manager, and he won. Get the book. I started reaading it again(this is my third time reading it) last week. Read it calmly and slowly. Know who your man is. Do not allow them to give or write the script on him for you. We all have seen him in action. so why believe this trash that they are trying to start. Most of these people have no steady and good decent conpass. Remember that first. Plus they do not want President to have another term, okay. Got your orders, so let us move with purpose, a purpose grounded in who be believe, President Obama, or Chris Matthew , Ed., all of the people who are running, or are we going to believe in what we have seen as a person, who happens to be the person that we electedd to be our President Barack H. Obama. Go after the records, not this nonsense. It will mess the mind up everytime. But we are ready to do this again with a little more wisdom, a little more fire in the belly, and a very good record of how this President has kept his word to us. Read his record on Whitehouse.gov and go back and read all of his speeches, State of the Union Speeches, AND then go back and look at the votes in both the House, and the Senate and see how these people blocked the votes on VERY important legislature. Prepare yourselves. Do your homework. Do not allow the like of the ‘talking heads, cable chatters’ to determine our moves. Not Now. I love you all but let’s do some home work along with our “Ccalling Out.” Hit the keyboards, the buttons, and move on with the case. We have great judges to hear our case, The People. Now do your work attorneys, and let us win this case. the jury is still out for another 18 months, but we can win and must win this case. Okay. I love you al so very much. HZ

Supposedly Baucus wasn’t originally in Reid’s three, however a couple others turned down spots. I really don’t like Baucus here – he’s the obvious Judas who will give the obstructionists Boehner and McConnell put forward their 7th vote. Murray was just re-elected in 2010, Baucus and Kerry are up in 2014. Kerry however is favorite to replace Sec. Clinton as Secretary of State in early 2013 (assuming Pres. Obama re-election of course) and Baucus probably will retire. So personal electoral politics shouldn’t be a factor. Sen Murray is DSCC chair so she’ll be cognizant of the political ramifications in 2012 as well.

I suspect McConnell will send three teabaggers. Won’t be any of Shameless, Crapo or Coburn – they already agreed to tax increases. I’d guess Kyl (who is retiring and has nothing to lose), Toomey (who was just elected in 2010 and is a Club for Growth true believer) and Portman.

  7. August 9, 2011 at 6:54 pm

Oh, but we are messed up with Bacus. Reid should be ashamed of himself. Of course Bacus will betray the Democrats, and the country. It’s as if Reid needed a valve in the committee because the GOP will not give an inch, we all know that. Bacus will betray, and Reid knows this. Mark my words.

We had povery issues during every past President, and Tavis and West did not get on their bus, in fact they were holding talking meeting with not results for the people in poverty. I think is Dr. West and Mr. Smiley really wanted to help, they probably should have got on the Jobs Bus/Economic Bus Tour and helped the President cover the other part of the country. You see how these clowns are playing with peoples lives. The President is not. Shame on them. Let us moving on with the President. People do not need to be reminded of their poverty, they need jobs to be able to get out of the poverty that the economy has forced many of them to further the load in numbers. Can’t believe Tavis and West wasting time, money and causing hearache in these communities and our country. How ugly of them. They were not welcomed in Detroit. Let us see what happens in Tenn., etc.

I know her. She’s fantastic. Obviously, so is Senator Kerry. I think Senator Baucus may surprise some of you. Please don’t be so certain that he will not be supportive of the President’s objectives.

The reality they all confront is that employment is the number one issue on almost all Americans’ minds. No way that the employment picture changes without serious revision in tax exemptions for the wealthy and corporations and everyone knows it. Similarly Americans will be paying very close attention to extension of the payroll tax deduction, extension of unemployment insurance and zero tampering with the AFA, Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security.

If McConnell and Boehner have any hope of keeping their jobs (forget leadership positions) they better do what it takes to begin reducing unemployment in America and, yes, not continue to only serve the rich – because everyone is watching, now. Their biggest strategic fail was their brinksmanship – they got EVERYONE’s attention and it is not something folk are going to forget, just like my parents and grandparents never forgot the Great Depression. Nothing the newstainers can do to change that fact.

    Yes.We.Can. … DO.More.Together!

Our professor, I truly value your wisdom, reasoning, patience, thoughtfulness……hey, you’re terrific, okay? 😀

    • August 9, 2011 at 7:44 pm

I hope you are right Bob. Kent Conrad and Baucus are the two economy wonks in the Senate. Since Conrad is retiring it makes sense to have Baucus on the team as a numbers man. Patty and John will take care of us.

Frankly, I do not think anything will be accomplished. Just like the “Cat” Food Commission. Whatever they decide has to be voted on by the house and senate, and the president can also veto it, so I think we need to wait to see how it plays out. It will probably go down the drain eventually. They are never going to agree. It is just theater. Mostly it will just cover the repugs butts.

To begin, social security, medicare, medicaid or programs for the poor are not even on the agenda. Pell grants were increased under the debt bill . Read Deaniac’s, The Peoples View article. He did a terrific piece titled Paul Krugman is a Political Rookie. Or How Barack Obama Left John Boehner Holding the Teabag Again. The magic secret in the debt deal was the triggers. The piece is only three pages, and I have printed it out so that I can have it available to use when I run into a doubter.

I saw up thread that Gobrooklyn said that Baucus was strongly against Paul Ryan’s budget, and he is on the Finance committee, so I hope that we can count on him. Remember we are dealing with the Tearepublicans now, they’re probably too extreme for him.

Unfortunately GGail this is only the beginning. The MSM, PL, and Teathugs want caos, confustion and distrations to engulf the voting public. This was probably put out by Romney’s campaign to seduce the PBO campaign into a war of words vs Romeny and co. He has been wanting attention from the media without actually having to reveal his constantly changing positions. When Perry officially enters the race I’d suggest Mittens focus on Mr. Perry. 😕

Baucus is one of my Senators. I am not always pleased with him, but I know several people that work in his office. I will try to get as much info as I can. They aren’t will pleased with me because I was very vocal during the health debate. I have been mad at him many times. But I want to keep communication open.

    • August 9, 2011 at 7:43 pm

I’m with you. I’m hoping for the best. IF they fail to reach consensus as a committee, then the alternative is also something that can be worked out.

Baucus is certainly better than Manchin! He asked to be on the committee, fortunately Harry said no. Baucus seems to be the kind who can “reach across the aisle” and that may be why Reid put him on there. I have been happier with his work since the Health Care debate. I think it’s his numbers smarts that put him there, as someone else mentioned upthread. So glad a WOMAN is one of the three!!! And, a true liberal from a liberal state….and Kerry from a liberal state……

For all of you who think emailing Chris Matthews about his false reporting, let’s consider that Chris knows exactly what he is doing, and will not change because we come at him. I tried that last year, and it didn’t even register with him. I am of the mind that anyone who would believe that President Obama would bash Romney’s religion, after watching our President for nigh 3 years, would believe so because they choose to, facts be damn. Some creatures (they’re not people to me in the familiar sense) who resent his Presidency try to lie to themselves just to bury their own insecurities of racism, jealousy and inferiority, but they also know that PBO is a decent man. I work with people like this. We all may. The only people who will continue or choose to support PBO are people such as ourselves…….probing, reasonable, fair, and honest people who heard Barack Obama the Senator, have read about him, have trusted him, worked hard for him, prayed for and ached for him. We are the people I choose to deal with because I need to maintain my sanity for the fight ahead. Chris and his ilk can go take a shit somewhere. Any efforts at emailing, tweeting, etc., IMO, are beneficial in contacting the pols who decide our fate. The msm is evil, so why would they care what we say?

“I am of the mind that anyone who would believe that President Obama would bash Romney’s religion, after watching our President for nigh 3 years, would believe so because they choose to, facts be damn.”

Exactly. This is like Cantor stating that PO went “postal” (my words but you get my drift) during the debt limit talks. Folks were not falling for that. This will go the same way. Folks can say what they want about PO but his strength of his character is clear.

i remember a saying that I needed to use more than once that says if someone says something bad about you that is not true live your life so no one can believe it. I have had to rely on that saying in my lifetime. I believe that any negative things said about PBO will not be believed by those that have payed attention to how he has conducted himself since the Campaign. My favorite saying definitely applies to PBO.

    • August 9, 2011 at 10:24 pm

EDP4BHO, I don’t expect Chris Matthews to change of stop telling the lies he tells. I just want to let him know exactly what I think of him, and I want him to know that I feel he is a lair, that and I don’t believe what he has to say.

Anniebella, that is a great point. Call them who they are. when they lie in front of us. When the facts are there, that is truth for taking steps in letting them know that you hear them, and what they just said was not factual. His conscience is his change factor. But take a stand when you must.

For whatever is is worth, Baucus was rated more Progressive inn 2010 than PL Progressive hero Feingold according these rankings.

    http://www.senatereports.com/Ideology1.aspx

Baucus is right down the middle. Let’s also remember that Jim Messina, who is running the Obama campaign, is the former chief of staff of Baucus. I think he will be more helpful than hurtful.

I guess I’ll post this here, as I don’t want to bring politics to the fallen soldiers thread. If a new thread pops up I’ll cut and paste this.

    Wisconsin Prediction –

Dems will take two seats. I know I suck as they needed three – but I’m usually very negative with my predictions so there is hope.

    Shilling[D] 54 – Kapanke 46
    King [D] 51 – Hopper 49
    Olsen 51 – Clark[D] 49
    Darling 53 – Pasch[D] 47
    Cowles 53 – Nusbaum[D] 47
    Harnsdorf 55 – Moore 45

However if you did want some fleeting hope and wanted to read between the lines, Gov. Walker released a statement about how he’d do things differently in hindsight and wants to work together with whoever is elected tonight. Very hypocritical given he signed the redistricting bill that massacres Dems in the state congress for the next ten years not an hour before.

Would he be talking that way if he saw internals that looked good for the GOP Senators?

What are you basing this on?

      • August 9, 2011 at 9:37 pm

PPP polling released on Monday and the fact that it was a very high turnout means the GOP got their vote out as well and when all the districts are red we needed the GOP to stay home.

        I’m going to bed.

I’ld like to tell him to shove his olive branch to Democrats up his ass.

      • August 9, 2011 at 9:10 pm

He’s trying to head off his own recall it seems. However the redistricting he signed today basically forces Dems to recall him because the map basically locks in GOP majorities in the State House and Senate. Even if the Dems take three tonight – if Walker is left in and the GOP take back the senate and hold the house in 2012 because of the redistricting than he could run roughshod again, this time for two years until he is up in 2014.

          August 9, 2011 at 9:43 pm

I hope they don’t back down, and go through with mounting a Walker recall. Redistricting is like stacking the deck..I am not sure how all that works, but it seems like ‘cheating the dealer’ to me.

    • August 9, 2011 at 9:08 pm

We’re closer to getting just one that getting the third one. However two wouldn’t be completely terrible as GOP Sen Dale Shultz voted against the anti-union measure. He’s in a bluish district and will be up for re-election in 2012 – all the legislature is at once given the redistricting.

Disagree with the Baucus choice. Reid should have selected a more progressive Dem. A progressive Dem would show the professional left just how hard it is to compromise with repubs. It would demonstrate that no amount of bullying, screaming, yelling, or pouting makes a difference when one MUST compromise with repubs.
