“The first lady comes first. When she doesn’t need him, I get second dibs,” Winfrey says in the Washington Post’s recent profile of Derrick Rutledge, who is described as “Obama’s main makeup artist.”
Rutledge, who traveled with singer Patti LaBelle for years, started working with the first lady “after Obama’s Chicago artist got tired of commuting to Washington” in 2009, according to the profile. When Winfrey saw the first lady’s look on the cover of Time magazine later that year, she sought out his services as well.
So Rutledge, who can make as much as $15,000 a day, juggles both big-name clients in addition to the other stars he beautifies. An East Wing aide told POLITICO that his make-up services are a “personal expense” for Obama.
“His schedule is as grueling as that of any White House official in top health,” the Post reports. “Most recently, he flew to South Africa with Winfrey in her private jet, then to Chicago, then to Los Angeles. When the White House summons, he flies back to Washington, even for a day or two, as he did to prepare the first lady recently for promotional videos and the Congressional Black Caucus dinner.”
What is so nice is that where you quoted that the personal expense was for Obama. This man(Our Beloved President) doesn’t mind spending money to make his woman look even more beautiful.
Why wouldn’t it be a personal expense? All of the meals and housekeeping of the first family are paid for by the first family.
This I know; however sometimes the media likes to falsely accuse President Obama.
I remember watching one of the first shows on TVOne, “Living it Up with Patti LaBelle” and it showed her travelling with Rutledge. He really seemed like a truly nice and kind person that is good to his clients-a very calm demeanor and very professional at all times. He was definitely not a diva by any means from what I saw. He treated Miss Patti very well and they were all like family. He does great work, but I think FLOTUS using him goes beyond just his talents. She wants to surrounded by good people as well….in addition to her makeup being fierce.
I am glad they included at her expense as you know the meme of the GOP would be how she is costing the tax payers. I thought I heard her dresses are at her expense too but am not sure on that one.
I’m almost embarrassed to say that if I was in front of the First Lady and had one question to ask her….it would be about her beauty regimen.

That was an interesting story. I hope he finds love - he’s doing wonders with Michelle’s makeup. I actually noticed that her look was softer and more professional after the first year. Her eyebrows were more delicate, too. Less severe. She looks fantastic!

I agree. It’s Michelle who shines in that dress, not the dress itself. Put the same outfit on someone else and it would look nice, but not stunning. Given her background, she never had the opportunity to have such beautiful clothes and make up growing up, but it’s as if she was born to the world of fashion and beauty, not as something phony to put on, but as an extension of her own inner elegance.

Church Overturns Interracial Couple Ban
All believers are welcome! Eastern Kentucky’s Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church overturned a decision to ban interracial couples from joining the congregation Sunday. Aside from saying the highly controversial vote was discriminatory, the pastor of the church said that new bylaws can’t clash with local, state, and national laws. Believers of all “race, creed, or color” are welcome now.
I’m glad to hear this, Marlz, but these church members really showed that their animus toward those unlike themselves carried much more weight than their Christianity. The original vote should never have taken place. I believe they voted to overrule it only after the story gained national attention and some, like myself, began to wonder how they could vote against anyone on the basis of race and still call themselves Christians. Who did Jesus ban from his presence?
Any mixed couple who bother to go back should have their heads examined. Their presence in that congregation can never be the same again.

Seriously. Even the Dark Sith hasn’t sunk THIS LOW. Former Rep. Artur Davis (D-AL, but replaced with a Real Democrat) won the dubious honor of Daily Kos’ Elections Digest “Air Ball of the Week” Award, and here’s why:
Yeah, he’s no Hermanator, but what a jerk this guy wound up being. He earns this spot on general principle, though he did earn a special spot this week for a pair of reasons. One was the revelation in the above Politico profile that Davis had dropped cash into Republican coffers in two races: the New Mexico Senate race (where he donated to former Rep. Heather Wilson) and the Mississippi gubernatorial election (where he donated to newly-elected Gov. Phil Bryant).
You sling your constituency under the bus in favor of ReThug policies when you were in Congress; then expected them to turn out and vote you into the Governor’s Mansion in ‘Bama because you’re African-American. When the African-Americans voted for the White Guy instead of your Black ass, you left Congress mad as hell at the Black folk because they didn’t ignore how you pissed on them, told them to kiss your ass, but they should show the hell up and vote you in as Governor.
Uh-Huh.
But sense real people who know the deal about Mr. Davis, probably sensed that while he was running for the Governor’s office, AS A DEMOCRAT, he was secretly sending campaign scratch to REPUBLICAN INCUMBENTS to help them out in their election campaigns. W-T-F?

You got that right DF. I live in Santa Fe and there are a lot of people here that pissed with her (no surprise really). She showed up at our annual MLK Day event talking equality and President Obama. She’s as hypocritical as they come. We must turn this state blue.
But she dodged a bullet in that her grandparents weren’t illegal immigrants as it was once thought was the case. So at least she’s not a hypocrite. Her husband is a Sheriff of 30 years, she’s former DA of the Year in NM and focused on public corruption and child protection. She won Gov election 53-46 in 2010, pretty strong spread given NM is considered a bluish hue these days.
She makes a lot of sense for the eventual GOP nominee. I don’t know if she’d want it though. It would look bad in that she wouldn’t have been in office for two years and already looking to move up. She might wait until 2016 just the same.

It has been impossible to imagine what a genuine avalanche of class and dignity the Obamas would bring to our White House. When I think of the extraordinary efforts they have made to bring honor to the country I could just cry.
When the skinny kid with the funny name burst forth and Howard Dean put him in the Dean Dozen, how could we have possibly known we would go on such a wonderful journey with them. And then when the 2 little girls did the 60 Minutes show in the kitchen, I thought OMG they will take the hearts of this country and they have.
We have given a gift to the world in this family and we must do all in our power to return them to the WH for a second term. We must handle the fact that when they are gone they can never be replicated and learn to love someone else. But for now, they have all of my love and devotion!

I don’t think I’ll ever switch my allegiance to anyone else after 2016. I might support others, but they’ll never hold the same space in my heart or level of fascination for me as these people have done. I know that already. They’re just special.

I think Cain will wait until after the Iowa debates on the 10th and 15th to make sure Newt is still viable after being the frontrunner target in both of those. If he does endorse Gingrich it could be a one day news story in that he did endorse Romney in 2008 (I don’t know why he would have - was he an influential radio host back then?).

All it will do is draw more attention to his infidelities and I don’t know how many votes an official endorsement would move - votes would have moved to Newt naturally with Cain out, how many extra votes does an official endorsement move?

Well with Cain and Perry as non-factors, the Koch brothers don’t have a horse in the race. Maybe this is a way for them to get their foot in the door with Gingrich who, I’m told, is only beholdin’ to himself.

Their service is making our country truly shine. It was my lucky day when I happened upon this wonderful place quite some time ago. I have learned so much from so many of the family members that I can share with others. I am so grateful that there is a place where many get to share their love and support for the president, his family and adminstration without having to wade through or be subjected to the bile that is found so many places on the internet. You have inspired so many to put action with their convictions and given us many tools to fight the good fight. I wish that there was something bigger than “Thank you” to convey all that I feel, but since there is not, it will have to do. With deepest gratitude for all that you do,

I know Oscar De La Renta is crying his eyes out. I remember Vera and Oscar both being in an article about high end designers wondering why Mrs. O was wearing mostly new young designers. Oscar attacked the First Lady while Vera basically said she would patiently wait.

It is very difficult to look good when being shot from below, but this couple manages to look stunning no matter what. Look at Flotus’ arms, the definition…her collarbone, her jawline….just flawless. The dress is phenomenal but it’s her aura that makes her so special. Potus as well. How I love watching this First Couple. Can’t wait to see the Kennedy Center Honors….it’s a wonderful holiday tradition. And look at how gorgeous the White House looks with all the Christmas trees!
