      Hi there, Maryl.

Hi there vc! 10 1/2 more days of school. Can I make it??????? Spent two hours after school yesterday and today trying to level the mountain of end-of-year paperwork. Didn’t even scratch the surface. Of course not being shure what century I’m in doesn’t help at all.

You CAN make it, Maryl ……. because you have to. Just think, in twelve ‘school’ days it will be over for another year! I suspect that as you get closer to the end you will figure out how to do some ‘creative’ paperwork that will clear your desk ;) and get you ready to enjoy a much needed recharging. Hang in there!

You are a very optimistic person! Thanks for the pep talk. Maybe I can go in and spread a little sunshine tomorrow to all the other suffering souls! My principal, who is the kindest, gentlest, most patient and positive man I know, nearly bit the head off a teacher who was asking a little question. I will think of President Obama and you, and soldier on! Yes We Can (for 10 1/2 more days!)

Hey, thanks for remembering and sending such a cheerful message! I can’t get to TOD on my school computer but I will think of this during the day. :) You know, we get bogged down in so many things and start worrying about things left undone and whether the children are really ready for third grade (no!) but 90% of the time I love my job and when I shut all that other stuff out we have a great time.

So…. ‘shut all that other stuff out’, because you can bet on the fact MORE of the children will remember the ‘great time’ for a longer time than they will all the other stuff. ;) ;)

        May 23, 2025 at 2:27 am

Me too Hopefruit! Me too! Rep. John Lewis knows exactly what the President was talking about. He knows exactly the struggle and sacrifices that people made to make it possible for the Black Black pundits writing for the Atlantic, NYT, WP; or Black professors on the faculty of prestigious Academic institutions; or, in his case, Black members of Congress. He certainly appreciated the fact that President Obama knows and understands that he is President because of the prior struggles and sacrifices of people like Rep. John Lewis ad others. Most importantly, Rep. John Lewis, who is in my age group, probably heard countless leaders in our time express similar sentiments as the President did.

I am just so sick of many current African American academics, and African American media pundits — many who have had no first hand knowledge of what it takes to organize a movement to win the presidency of the United States — who waste no time joining the party in attacking President Obama over some manufactured BS. There was absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing, wrong with the President’s Morehouse Commencement Speech. Absolutely nothing! As I commented late last night on another thread (I think it was the “This or That” thread) many of the themes in the President’s speech can be found in speeches given by past African American leaders going back to the Abolitionist era of David Walker, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Henry Highland Garnet and Dr. Martin Delany. Of course there were themes in that speech that could also be found in speeches and writings of Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Dubois, Dr. Benjamin Mays, Ella Baker, Dr. Martin Luther King, Elijah Mohamed, Malcolm X., Kwame Ture. I could go on, and on. Bottom line, I just don’t know why media pundits like Ta Nahesi Coates, are distorting the President’s impassioned message, deeply rooted in history and experience, to young African American men who are our future. I may be wrong, but I bet you Ta Nahesi Coates and other Black holier than thou academics and pundits, know nothing about Dr. Benjamin Mays who, at Morehouse, set out to teach and train Black men who would be the moral example of the entire world, and not just the Black world.

I would say given the caliber of people that have come out of the vision of “moral example of the entire world” it has been a success. I know there are those that will violate this same mission but we will be looking for this courage and compassion as a community and a world and we will find it because there has been this level of commitment.

I know I admire the President beyond my ability to describe but if I were going to choose a person to represent to the world the caliber of people included in a group I was a part of it would be him. Also group identity matters but it doesn’t. Rep. Lewis speaks for me when he says we are only going to go forward if we go together. (Wish they could find it in their hearts to understand that as the President and SofS Kerry pursue peace in the Middle East).

Go ahead and tell the TRUTH, Yardarm! Do these so called Black intellectuals know what it takes to organize a movement to win the Presidency of the United States? Do they know of any other of the past 43 presidents who had the burst of DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING in the oval office alongside the supposedly great presidents? Are their eyes and ears closed and plugged not to see or hear the tremendous vitriol President Obama had to endure trying to do good for all Americans? Are they so dumb to think that President Obama can single handedly impose the so called Black agenda by “Pimp Smiley” and “Corny West.” Instead of forming a united front to counter the forces arrayed against a President who is on their side, all these so called Black intellectuals and media pundits are joining hands with all the forces attacking and undermining the President.

Yardarm, here is my message to all the Black bashers of the President:

I am sorry, but you do not impress me, simply because you are black, when you join in the vicious attacks against the first African American President, who inherited such a mess, and has been working so hard to turn the situation around and improve the lives of all Americans of all races. Get it into your head President Obama is the President of the United States and not just the President of Black America. And, if you happen to be a supposed Black intellectual, you definitely don’t impress me when you are ignorant about the nature of American political system when you think that a president can single handily enact a Black agenda. I will only be impressed if you get off you intellectual high horse and go out and campaign to elect members of Congress who would be willing to cooperate with the President in enacting policies that you favor. If you can’t do that, then you should shut the f**k up and go enjoy your wine and cognac and philosophize about the ideal Black President who can miraculously erases the over 500 years of racism and Black oppression in four years.

      • 57 Obama Grandmama
        May 23, 2025 at 1:41 am

You are right, Chris Matthews is a follower. He goes by his emotions, what others say, not by really digging up facts and truths. That is why I like Lawrence O’Donnell who has experience in the Congress so knows how things work and does not have to rely on others opinions. Even Rachel digs for facts although she gets bogged down with her pet prejudices.

        • 58 Nena20409
          May 23, 2025 at 10:03 am

Chris Matthews has experience in Congress too. He worked for Tip O’Neill. He wrote speeches for Jimmy Carter. He was a reporter for San Francisco Chronicle. He was a policeman for the Capitol in DC. That is why I said that he is a follower. He should know better, but has refused to rise above the Herd and had chosen to mimic rather than do what a Lawrence O’Donnell does……factually report the news as found.

Why is it that Tweety Matthews and his smirking sidekick Fineman are allowed to spew all kinds of GOP lies and talking points on this issue day after day - while Lawrence is tasked with setting the record straight. Is MSNBC trying to bamboozle folks while covering its corrupt Republican arse?

Thank you Nena for sharing this.

I’m sure everyone may know, but Good Night Sweetheart was written by Pookie Hudson and sung by Pookie and the Spaniels. Pookie said he wrote the song on his way home from a young lady’s house after being asked to leave because it was midnight. I use to see Pookie quite often when I was a kid. He was quite a bit older than I, but I knew him by his reputation. Here is the original song. As with so many other black artists in the past, Pookie lost all rights to this song and never received a dime in royalties.

What kind of church is this which preaches against any kind of health or safety precaution—-no eyeglasses, toothpaste, seat belts, no doctors, no medicine etc. How muddled in the head do you have to be to believe this junk? Thank you so much for this post. I have a soft spot for Carole King - many great memories via her music!

I’m off again at crack of dawn. Hey, Meta, if you’re around TOD, I’m going to be in your neck of the woods. (Sorry, Nath, a little north of you!) Meta, tell me no fog! Can I beg for 80F? :) My lovely son is graduating from univ. and I plan to whistle & blubber all the way! Hopefully, I won’t embarrass the Eucalyptus trees. LOL! I don’t know who’s more excited — me or him! Lawd, son, don’t forget our deal from way back when I carried you + your diaper bags + groceries, etc.: Mama doesn’t do retirement homes! :)

Anyhoo, the light at the end of my June tunnel is almost here! Then I can so indulge some in my favorite place: TODville! Where one gets a daily fix from Chips & The Blogger-T’s. Now, you know when I came up w/ that name, I was severely lacking in caffeine or LL’s CA wine (sorry, AMK, you do make non-CA wine drinks in such pretty glasses! ;) ), but I do have to give it to some of the great CA wines. There are some good ones in Oregon too! Now I just take a pic of the wine bottle label w/ my phone when I hit a great wine. So much easier than trying to remember the damn name, etc.! Just show the pic at the wine store! It can be funny when you’re scrolling thru so many and the store guy is just looking at you w/ a totally bemused expression. :)

Bobfr, you had a dedication to “Gazelle” many posts ago. I was on my 36-passenger limo trying to catch up w/ TOD via my phone, and I was so happy: A dedication to me? Awww! Then I realized it was for Gazelle62. Sorry, I claimed the darn thing, but then shared with all! In my mind, that is! LOL!

    Bless! xoxo

Atheists should be seen as good people if they do good, Pope Francis has said in his latest urging that people of all religions, and none, work together.

The leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics made his comments in the homily of his morning mass at his residence, a daily event at which he speaks without prepared comments.

He told the story of a Catholic who asked a priest if even atheists had been redeemed by Jesus.

“Even them, everyone,” the pope answered, according to Vatican Radio. “We all have the duty to do good,” he said.

    “Exclusively vs Primarily”

For those TPers who yelled foul and for those who jumped on the bandwagon claiming scandal, thanks for creating this opportunity for the scrutiny that highlighted the discrepancy between the statute and the IRS guidelines.

And a big thank you to Lawrence O’Donnell for identifying the REAL scandal.

When the IRS guidelines are changed to reflect what the statute says — and I’m willing to bet some changes will be made — let’s see how quickly the RWNJs/TPGOP/MSM start screaming that the President is overstepping his authority.

swbluega, I sent Hardball idiot Chris Matthews a email and told him he need to try watching Lawrence O’Donnell. The only one who are looking for facts, instead of chasing scandals by the coattail. I loved it when O’Donnell talked about how the media are just chasing so call scandals.

    Just a reminder….

    Organizing for Action
    Vicki —

Our immigration system is outdated, broken, and backward, and our nation’s status as the center of technology and innovation is suffering because of it.

It’s time for Congress to act. Over the next two days, OFA is joining a team of organizations, tech companies, and entrepreneurs in the MARCH FOR INNOVATION, a virtual event that we’re hoping will get lawmakers’ attention.

Join in: Tweet at your senators, post on Facebook, or just call your members of Congress and join the drumbeat of Americans demanding comprehensive immigration reform now.

Elected officials and celebrities — like New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, hip-hop legend Russell Simmons, and more — will be passing the baton to one another online. OFA Executive Director Jon Carson will be joining in, too. AND THEY’RE ASKING THOUSANDS OF AMERICANS TO JUMP IN AND BE A PART OF IT. [Caps are mine]

One tweet or one Facebook post is all it takes to add your voice. And think of what will happen when thousands of Americans do it around one issue, all at the same time?

That’s hard to turn a blind eye to.

Join the conversation, seize the moment, and help get immigration reform passed:
