President Obama hugs Amazon employee Lydia Flanders who introduced the president before he makes a speech about the economy and jobs at an Amazon.com Fulfillment Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee
Text of the President’s remarks here

Back with a ‘This and That’ in a bit

my President is on the move!
Yes he is, and so are you! Congrats vitamin on #1 :)
Thank you, hopefruit.
Hello Everybody. Hello Chips.
Helloooooooo JER, helloooooooo everyone: woooooooot: my internet thingie appears to be finally working …. although, I shouldn’t tempt fate :???:
Afternoon!
Oops! Missed the turn.
Great title, Chips! ‘Chattanooga’ as a title sure fits in as a followup to ‘Chat away’. Hmmmm, ‘anooga’ would definitely be an adverb in that context, but I wonder what meanings I could ascribe to it..
Fantastic news.
Chipsticks - a gazillion thanks for posting the event. I can watch it when I get home this evening.
Happy to see you stopped loafing around and finally paid us some attention! :D
 And my plan was so perfect, GGail - travel Sunday, arrive Sunday night, have internet set up Monday afternoon, and woooosh. But no, nothing worked until today, and then it only half flippin’ worked. If it wasn’t for the mighty UT, the blog would have faded away the last couple of days!
Utal to the rescue! TODvillage life is worry-free when you have a reliable Utal.
A ‘1’, a ‘2’, a ‘1-2-3’ … Utal! Utal! Utal! Rah! Rah! Rah!
Hahahahahahahaha. Thanks VC!
You done good, ‘girl’! Be proud of your accomplishments.
And that is the absolute TRUTH, VC! The proof of a great leader is demonstrated by caliber of the people he/she selects to work with. There is absolutely no doubt about Chipsticks’ brilliant leadership for having chosen, the equally brilliant, Utaustinliberal as her co-blog pilot! The “mighty UT,” as Chips calls her, has done a magnificent Job filling in for Chips. TOD never missed a beat during Chips’ temporary absence. At the same time, I am so happy to see Chips back.
And we are still here because she did

The Republican leadership problem
President Obama’s strategy was to hold on to reasonableness and sanity (ie, “the only adult in the room”) - even as many progressives encouraged him to wage partisan warfare. Its important to ask ourselves whether we’d be seeing this kind of chaos from Republicans if the President had taken their advice. I think not. Conciliatory rhetoric as a ruthless strategy worked to get us to this point. And now its time to develop a common sense caucus with the various factions it produced. But recognizing that requires that we notice the long game.
Thank you so much, Prettyfoot, for sharing this piece by Smartypants. I think she is one of the most astute observer of President Obama.
I agree with you, nath, Smartypants is one of the smartest minds on the web and, like the president, she sees the long game.
I missed the speech so thank you to UT for the great tweets and to Chips for the video.
My friend who is retired from Homeland Security has a group of friends his sends emails to of important information he has found. Just now he sent this article I think is very interesting from Salon. http://www.salon.com/2013/07/27/big_finance_is_sucking_the_life_out_of_our_economy_partner/
It says what we all have been saying. Wall Street is only interested in making money off of money. They don’t care about innovation. They are strangling us.
This is one of the reasons I am so disgusted by our MSM.
They dismiss President Obama’s “talking points” as if what he’s saying is on par with Steve “Cantaloupe Calves” King, Rand “My state gets 150% back from the dollars it pays to Washington” Paul, Huma “I’m married to an idiot” Abedin.
I saw a very brief segment this morning on Morning Joe just before 6 am Pacific time. Tried to find it on its website, but to no avail.
Don’t know who was speaking (two young white men) but they were talking about how JP Morgan (I think, might have been Citi) have admitted that they were PRICE-FIXING the electricity market.
They have to pay a paltry fine, which does NOTHING to stop these jackasses from making more money out of CHEATING.
And these are the same people who want to deny food stamps to the hungry poor in favor of farm subsidies to millionaires.
Dr. Jill writing about her day in Singapore on July 26th
//………………………………..
I visited the Children’s Library to read Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey with about 30 local school children. The story of Mr. and Mrs. Mallard and their eight ducklings is one of my favorite children’s stories. As an English teacher, I love nothing more than helping kids appreciate reading. I especially relish any opportunity I have to spend time with young children who are just discovering how exciting and eye opening reading can be. Each child was so attentive and interested which reaffirms the importance that Singapore, like the United States, places on early education.

Ques: How does Jovie feel about Issa?
Ans: https://twitter.com/Jovie141/status/362349572556726272
LOL! I feel the same way as Jovie does about Issa. I’m guessing we all do.
Hehe
Jovie, Jovie, Jovie - you are too funny!!! Thank you for telling it like it is!
I wish Democrats would recruit a viable candidate to seriously Challenge Darrell Issa.
Mrs. Flanders who introduce the President, said she has a daughter name Malia and her daughter wanted her to tell the President that her name was Malia like his daughter.
:)
That’s all they know how to do….name something after Ronnie Raygun. Call it RR Increased Taxes Southern Coast Line.
Any Physician Assistants or PA students out there reading this? IF so, reply to this comment. I have some questions!
Sorry - I only play one on TV. (:))
Oops: ( :) )
Good read…common sense
http://crooksandliars.com/dave-johnson/jobs-fix-economy-cuts-cut-economy
The “Sequester” in particular is damaging the country. The Sequester is that DC “debt-ceiling” deal that got the Republicans to back off their threat to force the government to default on its obligations, thereby ruining our credit rating and risking the takedown of the world’s economy. The Sequester cuts $1.2 trillion more (on top of trillions already cut through other deals) from the economy over the next decade. It cuts Meals on Wheels, cancer clinics, medical research, housing assistance and all kinds of other important things We the People do to make our lives better.
(Note that cutting things like Meals on Wheels actually increases costs by forcing elderly people into nursing homes, hospitals, etc…)
Catch that last little sentence?….something I hadn’t thought of:)
My question about Issa and others like Steve King, that Gohmert guy from Texas, Michele Bachman, that Virginia Fox nut from North Carolina, and others, my question is how the hell did these folks get elected to Congress?
ignorant electorate. “R” behind their name…works for them!
I am sick of Bradley Manning. I am sick of E. Snowden. I am sick of people spitting Fox lies at me after I’ve debunking them time and again. I am sick of people who are so paranoid about our government spying on them that they post their paranoid anti-government message all over Facebook. I am sick of my Facebook friend, a supporter of PBO who is now mad at him because he is creating jobs in traditionally male fields. What?? I know she has been out of work for a long time and is having a hard time finding work because her allergies prevent her from working in many offices. Therefore I am not going to argue with her about this. But seriously. He’s creating jobs anywhere he can find them and now he’s not creating the right Kinds of jobs. Well, he tried to create jobs for teachers, and ACA will probably create jobs for nurses, so if you want to label every job male or female there are some female ones. Basically I’m sick of so many people nitpicking PBO because he hasn’t done Every. Damn. Thing. Anyway, having gotten that off my chest, I present you with a very amusing little video:
Bitchers gonna bitch.
Truth.
Go ahead and tell it DF!
maryl1
thanks - I’ll smile all the way home :-)
Then my work here is done :)
x100000000000
I got an email from a good friend of mine all freaked out about NSA spying. OMG, just stop with the PL BS. It’s not rocket science. Think, people! PBO is not reading your stupid email!
I mean, seriously, my spam box is full of viagra crap. I’m a woman, why am I getting spam for Viagra? I feel like I want to see a viagra commercial that speaks the truth, like:
Hey gun owners! Decrease your chances of shrinkage by purchasing a semi-automatic TODAY!!
Idiots!
“Hey gun owners! Decrease your chances of shrinkage by purchasing a semi-automatic TODAY!!”
:) :) :) :) :) Now THAT would be a viagra commercial worth watching!
I’m glad you and can make sense out of this idiocy!!
:) Me too, Meta, me too.
Maryl, if you are still talking to her you might mention that Amazon will be hiring 5,000 new workers. During POTUS’ speech today he was talking about some innovations for workers at Amazon that made it a good place to work.
Thanks, TME. I will pass that information along. I wonder if any of the jobs can be done online from home? I feel very bad for her so I hope this will help.
MARY I’m not sure where ur friend lives, but, I have a friend who was just hired by Holland American Lines, in reservations. lots of test to get thru and must work in office for 1 yr, then they mite set her up for working from home. Its hard work, but, some commissions.
Thanks! I will pass this along too!
{{{{Maryl}}}}
Thanks, VC! Those virtual hugs work wonders. I am actually in a pretty good mood since summer school is going rather well. They are a bunch of loony children though. One of the 4th graders told their teacher that leader dogs help blind people by reading the labels on cans in the grocery store so they don’t get baking soda for breakfast. :P I think I should just stay off facebook.
Well with a 4th grade wiseacre like that one, you really do not need facebook! I sure hope s/he* was being ‘funny’
* It was a ‘he’ wasn’t it?
Yep, a young man. And he was dead serious!
O dear! I was thinking he was maybe the ‘class clown’. I truly can’t even see where’s he’s coming from. You know, sometimes kids say weird things but they actually make sense when you know their frame of reference? Well, I wish him well.
the teacher tried, she really did, to find out what he thought he meant. But apparently he really thought that those “seeing eye” dogs could read. That’s when he came up with the “baking soda for breakfast” thing. Really sweet kid , though. Teaching is not as easy as it looks, but it does provide a few unexpected laughs along the way.
I’m sick of all the same things you’re sick of. Sick mates! Also enjoyed cute vid.
Sick mates!! I like it! I feel less sick now ;)
omg that’s hilarious. :D
Allen! Allen! Al! Allen!!
LOL…and the moonwalking birdie..:)
Wonder if this guy is really this STUPID???!!!
http://bobcesca.thedailybanter.com/blog-archives/2013/07/cruz-government-shutdown-is-like-a-holiday-weekend.html
Of course, as a member of Congress, Ted Cruz knows all about long weekends, doesn’t he?
via RollCall
“There are some Democrats, some in the media, even some Republicans, who portray a shutdown as … a horrible calamity. I think the term ?shutdown’ is a misnomer. It’s actually a partial, temporary shutdown. We have seen them before.
“The world didn’t end. Planes didn’t fall out of the sky, Social Security checks didn’t stop, military paychecks didn’t stop, we didn’t default on our national debt,” Cruz said. “What happened was non-essential government services were temporarily suspended while the CR expired.
“That happens every single week on the weekend. Saturdays and Sundays we see temporary, partial government shutdowns, and the world doesn’t end,” Cruz said.
Um. No.
I don’t think you have to wonder anymore.
Nope, the whole world now knows Ted Cruz is another GOP idiot from Texas.
If Cruz really did graduate from Harvard, he must have missed a lot of classes. He’s either stupid or he thinks we are.
He’s either very stupid, blinded by ideology, or very manipulative and good at dissembling.
Add Ted Cruz to that list where I asked how the hell did a dam jackass like him get elected.
:)
I don’t have a link at hand, but the business community is already steamed at the GOP for even talking about it. They will pressure them and explain the stupidity and cost of it. I have GOP rep and Senator. I love calling them about this kind of nonsense.
Eeek. He is dumb. That’s all.
Forgive me for saying this - but comments like these from your ‘learned’ politicians make me wonder about the authenticity, or validity, of those law degrees so many of them purportedly have. I used to equate a law degree (and a university degree) with intelligence in days gone by … at least until I came face to face with lawyers like Bachmann (and college graduates like the Alaska Barbie).
“Wonder if this guy is really this STUPID???!!!”
DF, I honestly think he is that stupid! The sad thing is that our tax dollars are paying for his stupidity!
It means a workday off with NO pay. Lots of people need ALL their pay. Do you suppose since the GOP legislators keep taking all those days off instead of being in session they just think it is the same for everyone? Seems to me they need all those days off to be with NO pay too so they may start to “get” it!
So will Chris Hayes treat viewers to another nightly bore-fest tribute to Bradley Manning - this time comparing him to Mandela? Not that I will be watching anyway.
I am expecting Jeremy Scahill to be on……
I got an e-mail (before unsubscribing) from Daily Kos saying I should sign a petition telling the President not to make a deal with Republicans about cutting Medicare. What the hell is this all about?! It worries me that they’re giving people the idea that he would do this! Not everyone is informed like us! Anyone see this?
Drives clicks to their site….follow the $$$ They didn’t DEMAND that “Obama” not make a deal?! That’s what they usually do. Haven’t been there in years…nor HP….Salon is on the way out….
Me too…..I just delete them.
Oh yes, I got it as well. It’s infuriating and I have several friends who eat it up. No matter that they are always doing this: saying he said things he didn’t really say, getting people all stirred up over made-up nonsense. I just keep saying “I’ll wait to hear what the President says”.
The more I read Groundswell, David Corn’s story, the more I know that, while there are some on this and other so-called lefty blogs who are Democrats, I believe that it is completely infiltrated by posers.
http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2013/07/groundswell-secret-tape-boehner-issa-benghazi
africa, I think there are a lot of Libertarians, too. A couple of years ago Rand Paul and Ralph Nader were on some tv show and were talking about a coalition. I think the evolution of the far right will be a coalition with the far left and a lot of those types are at DKos. I think you are right and there are right-wing posers, too.
hey Sherry - that meme is same ‘ol isht just a different day. That talking point is recycled at least once every six months.
I didn’t read it, not on their email list, but I’ve seen them do this type of thing before. They gin up hysteria to draw the Glenn Greenwald, Cenk Ungar types to the site. There were some really good people there at one time. It’s really a shame.
Just remember that we are powerful in standing with the President to create the world we believe in. OFA is powerful. Think of all the President has accomplished and all along the way were people saying he wouldn’t be able to do it. He keeps his eye on his vision of what he wants to create and that’s so powerful.
Sherry, this is the second time I’ve unsubscribed to Daily Kos messages and they keep mysteriously reappearing. I never read them, but just hit delete. Any message that starts with “tell the president…” is an automatic delete. I wish the unsubscribe button had given me a chance to tell them why. I actually feel as if my e-mail has been sullied if I get a DK message. The are a cesspool of anti PBO hatred.

Bill Clinton made a video for Allison Lundergran-Grimes… Mitch is toast !
KY needs to listen and pay attention!!
I think McTurtle is going to wish Ashley Judd had ran against him. Looking forward to this battle.
Grimes is exactly why she was pressured out.
So much talk of “working together across the aisle” - bipartisanship - to the GOP it simply means doing what they want. Looking at history in many countries - including the US - the only bipartisan that exists has been during right wing administrations. The GOP are NEVER bipartisan - whether they be in office or out of office. They do NOT work with democratic Presidents.

HERE’S YOUR POSERS RIGHT HERE!
News Channel 9 in Chattanooga had excellent live feed coverage and positive, factual commentary afterwards. They did a really nice interview with the CEO of the Chamber of Commerce and he was VERY happy about the President’s visit. I was hoping to find something about that, will keep looking. There were a lot of local officials there. Their mayor is a Democrat and very happy about the visit. He told the President how the stimulus had helped and POTUS asked him about the city.
Mayor Andy Berke Reflects On POTUS Visit
http://www.newschannel9.com/news/top-stories/stories/mayor-andy-berke-reflects-potus-visit-6427.shtml
“I told him about our vibrant downtown. I told him the investment that had been made through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act had allowed us to get the gigabyte per second technology here. We talked about Race to the Top and education reform. He was really familiar with what was going on in Tennessee,” says Mayor Berke.
As it turns out, President Obama was interested in Chattanooga’s affairs too.
“He was very down to earth. He asked a lot of questions about Chattanooga. He wanted to know more about what’s going on here. He wanted to understand what was going on on the ground,” says Berke.
He did a local interview too!
That’s very nice. Thanks MagicalEarth for sharing!! :)
I see the mayor was once a student of Obama’s at U. of Chgo. law school. Interesting.
Thanks, MagicalEarth!
I really enjoyed a couple of the videos that you recommended earlier today (interviews with Amazon employees, including Lydia, the woman who introduced the President on stage).
Their videos are some kind Flash wizardry that don’t have unique URLs, so it’s impossible to share here (when you’re as non technical as me).
Favorite part of interview was:
“I told him the investment that had been made through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act had allowed us to get the gigabyte per second technology here.”
The “stimulus” that RWNJs love to bash.
NYC’s in an “Obama” state of mind!
That’s great! PBO would have received more votes if not for Hurricane Sandy.
this RC de Winter is killin’ me such great tweets DF!
She usually has really good ones:) If I see them and think I should share, I bring them over:)
I have seen some really great tweets by her but can’t retweet because she blocked me - when and for what I haven’t a clue. Probably didn’t like the colour of my eyes. O well!
For goodness sakes! Not to worry…I’ll bring the good ones over.
As you have been doing, Df TY. Thing is when I see the really good ones I want to share too. Grrrrr. If I knew what I’d done/said I’d feel better. There are three twitter sources who have blocked me and I’m mystified as to why. I’ll live, tho.
Can anybody name those dudes, so we can stand clear of ’em? Ha. Pathetic.
I think they’re random old white guys….GOP random old white guys
Don’t hang with any. Stand clear!

LOL! If all you see on that stupid WRECK list is Manning, Snowden, Manning, Assange, Greenwald, Snowden, Assange, you will leave ASAP! :) :)
I haven’t been to dk for about 6 years. Don’t miss any piece of it.
And I don’t blame you one bit.
Was a regular visitor to dKos before the 2008 election.
Loved “poblano” (Nate Silver, as he later told us) and it cracked me up that when Senator Obama spoke the chat threads would fill up immediately. One I remember seeing was filled up between the time Sen. Obama was announced and when he got to the microphone.
I remember one post by “poblano” when he almost caught a glimpse of Senator Obama (at a Mexican restaurant, I think). It didn’t happen, but he was so excited by the possibility.
I quit visiting DK, HuffPost, and TPM, 4’1/2 years ago. I just could not put up with the ODS by many people on those blogs.
This article describes the tax deal POTUS is talking about, cutting corporate tax rates and closing loopholes, putting the money into training, job creation. Also gives GOP positions. It;s News Channel 5 in Nashville so it’s giving POTUS credit for his proposals.
They are not talking about the recent G-20 summit where all the member countries want to stop the tax evasion by multinational corp like Apple.
President Obama Makes Economic Speech In Chattanooga
http://www.newschannel5.com/story/22963922/president-obama-to-visit-chattanooga-tuesday
…The U.S. has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world, but many businesses avoid the full cost by taking advantage of deductions, credits and exemptions that Obama wants to eliminate.
Obama wants to do away with corporate tax benefits like oil and natural gas industry subsidies, special breaks for the purchase of private jets and certain corporate tax shelters. He also wants to impose a minimum tax on foreign earnings, a move opposed by multinational corporations and perhaps the most contentious provision in the president’s plan….
Okay then.
He’s always about a million steps ahead, isn’t he? In a twisted way, I love this.
I like it in the same ‘twisted way’, I think. These two are likely to stick their heads in anyway meeting with the ‘rebels’, so take away their braggadocio by throwing them a bone to pump up their sense of foreign policy importance.
Obviously, I could not have said that better, VC! And yet it’s exactly what I meant, so I’ll share the credit!
Very interesting.
The GOP is splintering before our very eyes, and this “acquiescence” to the “illegitimate” President is sure to fracture the party even more.
Reposting because it’s just too good:
Can they please say, President Obama. It just pisses me off. So tired of their disrespect.
Will Japanese cherry blossoms be in POTUS and FLOTUS future next Spring?
Sounds like a great visit to Japan for the Obama family, POTUS, FLOTUS, Malia, and Sasha.
They just say speech today, but it’s Chattanooga
Obama Calls Out Republicans For Wasting Time On Keystone: ?That’s Not A Jobs Plan’
http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2013/07/30/2384551/obama-keystone-jobs/
…While Republicans have advocated for Keystone by insisting that it will create jobs, Obama slammed that assertion Tuesday, pointing to the Cornell University estimate that Keystone would only create 50 permanent jobs…
An estimate done by Obama’s own State Department pegs the the total number of permanent jobs created by Keystone even lower — at a mere 35. But that’s not the only reason not to build it; were the pipeline completed, it would emit levels of CO2 equivalent to that of 51 coal-fired power plants….

Obama makes his case for the middle class
http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/07/24/19661832-obama-makes-his-case-for-the-middle-class?lite
….This was a very forward-thinking speech. While Republican leaders regularly present a vision of a different kind of America — one without a safety net, without access to affordable health care, without retirement security, without education, without environmental protections, without the right to organize or bargain collectively, but plenty of Ayn Rand-approved “freedom” — this was the president’s opportunity to sketch out a more progressive alternative….
….And what Obama thinks should be next is a center-left approach, built on the belief that lasting prosperity comes from an economy that rejects a top-down model in which we help the rich and wait for wealth to someday trickle down, but focuses instead on a “middle-out” model that emphasizes the middle class. (The president used the phrase “middle class” 25 times in this speech.)
If the president’s detractors have anything even remotely as compelling, I’m eager to see it.
Did you guys get a Happy Birthday card from the DNC for President Obama’s birthday August 4th?
Yes, I did. signed and ncluded a comment.
