That said, viewing a funeral or not, I think the better tribute and way to honor this man and his legacy is for all of us to continue doing his good work, where ever we live. The great thing about technology is there are always replays :) If the BBC has video online, their coverage was the best - our ABC wasn’t too bad - but they did overtalk the service at times. (From what I gather CNN preferred the sound of their pundit voices to the service presentations)
That we lived in the times of Mandela is a wonderful legacy for all who live today. That he’s buried in a place where folks can visit and remember, where his life began - brings him close to all his people.

Yesterday some clueless Snowjob-supporting dudebro tweeted in response to that poll that people prefer “comforting lies” over “disturbing truths.” I asked that idiot since when is voicing concern about massive wealth inequalities & widespread poverty “comforting lies?” I’m still waiting to hear from him.
And I have a funny feeling that the media will turn on NYC’s Mayor-elect de Blasio in a similar fashion once he’s sworn into office and begins to show that he means business, and his Mayorship is more than just having a cute teenage son with an Afro.

Good morning, Chips, that is one beautiful and touching photo! Thank you. Missed everything once again last night. The snow was pretty intense, but we stupidly tried to get to a local church for a Christmas event. Got dressed, drove out into the snow only to find that the event had been cancelled (two dimwits who didn’t call first). Getting back was s…l…o…w and we were exhausted. Snow has stopped, so the worst seems to be over for now. Going to take the time today so see as much of the coverage as I can. Thank you for providing so much And to 99t for summing it up so well as-“one for the ages.”
Morning Jackie! Oh my word, how frustrating to make that effort only for the event to be cancelled - grrr! Will try to find videos of the funeral so anyone who missed it can catch up.
It was a much more formal event than the memorial service jackie - but still had the delightful “informality” we saw at the memorial. There was little or no interruptions to the speakers & they could all be heard.. The same man (who in my opinion did a wonderful job) ran most of the proceedings - always making “suggestions” rather than giving orders - I eventually heard that he is the No2 man in the ANC. I can believe this was how Mandela operated when he achieved the consensus that avoided mass bloodshed in his country.
The final service at the grave saw everyone involved working so hard to make it perfect - they even included a flyover - which was something I was not at all expecting.
It went on for quite some hours - wish I had UT’s skills in picking out the pertinent facts - but we heard from family, friends, political leaders, religious people - some were not in English (the BBC provided some translation). I would suggest you skip through it & select the speakers that attract you most. I found the final sermon from the Bishop (I know not which Bishop) was enriching - must admit to being amused when the MC asked him to give “the shortest sermon he could manage”. In SA they like burials to be at midday - when the sun is overhead and the shadows are the shortest - and they were running late. :)

Fortunately I taped the rest of the funeral on CNN but they were talking so much I’m not sure how much of service was actually captured. It’s a shame that CSPAN one TV chose to re-air a limited segment of Tuesday’s Memorial featuring PBO’s speech and a few speeches afterwards just at the same time the funeral ceremony was taking place. I don’t know why they did that.
The walk to the grave & the service there can be watched without sound - and if they played the Bishop speaking at the end of the main service that is worth listening to.
I have taken to calling TV stations and complaining when they ruin a presentation in this way - I think its related to getting old and cranky! Oh dear.

Prettyfoot58- Frank Schaeffer is a longtime supporter of the President. If you read his piece, he is saying that the GOP, right and left media people are engaged in this and how wrong it is and people must stand up and have the PBO’s back . Mr Schaeffer definitely has and by this piece is calling attention to what he sees happening. It is not a paternalist piece , in my view.
I agree that Schaeffer’s use of the term “lynching” is a bit hyperbolic - he should just call it what it is. Race-based opposition and resentment, yes, but it’s not lynching. I think Schaeffer is well-meaning as criquet indicated, but he needs to stop portraying PBO as if he were a poor disenfranchised Black man of the pre-civil rights era. He’s the most powerful man in the world and like any other person in power - he will be targeted by certain groups and factions particularly those who feel threatened by his agenda. And his ethnic/racial background certainly adds another component to the opposition - but it’s still not at the level of lynching.
I read the piece, and I know who his target audience is: rightwing fundamentalists and left wing pundits…..neither of which “get” President Obama. The only way he could wake up his audience is to use this kind of language, as that is what the right wing do overtly, and the left wing do covertly. .
I’m part of Frank’s demographic……and he was not over the top. This message needs to get through. I did not see President Obama portrayed as helpless, I saw the right and left wings portrayed as hateful and ugly.
Yes, his use of the N word was very discomfiting, but he said what Joe Wilson was implying. These are truths the body politic has to face, as ugly as they are.

When I could talk sports with the guys in the office area, one of the other women asked me why. I told her I had two boys and I read Sports Illustrated. She couldn’t understand why I did. I told her in a way she could relate to, “It’s the best gossip rag out there”. ;)
I see the news report about Iran being upset because the US penalized companies who were breaking the sanctions placed on Iran…they feel blindsided…according the news report…I do not know why they are feeling blindsided…did they not believe the US would still hold companies accountable for breaking the sanctions….interesting
I watched this speech again yesterday afternoon, and was as blown away by it as I was the first time. The people standing outside in the back of the President (who prior to his speech were restless and somewhat distracting), were very much in tuned with him while he spoke. One man kept blowing kisses and sending it to the audience and/or to PBO while PBO spoke. It was really a sight to behold - the whole event.

Prettyfoot58- Frank Schaeffer is a longtime supporter of the President. If you read his piece, he is saying that the GOP, right and left media people are engaged in this and how wrong it is and people must stand up and have the PBO’s back . Mr Schaeffer definitely has and by this piece is calling attention to what he sees happening. It is not a paternalist piece , in my view.
His using of the N word…is suspect to me as is his piece…

I agree that Schaeffer’s use of the term “lynching” is a bit hyperbolic - he should just call it what it is. Race-based opposition and resentment, yes, but it’s not lynching. I think Schaeffer is well-meaning as criquet indicated, but he needs to stop portraying PBO as if he were a poor disenfranchised Black man of the pre-civil rights era. He’s the most powerful man in the world and like any other person in power - he will be targeted by certain groups and factions particularly those who feel threatened by his agenda. And his ethnic/racial background certainly adds another component to the opposition - but it’s still not at the level of lynching.
I read the piece, and I know who his target audience is: rightwing fundamentalists and left wing pundits…..neither of which “get” President Obama. The only way he could wake up his audience is to use this kind of language, as that is what the right wing do overtly, and the left wing do covertly. .
I’m part of Frank’s demographic……and he was not over the top. This message needs to get through. I did not see President Obama portrayed as helpless, I saw the right and left wings portrayed as hateful and ugly.
Yes, his use of the N word was very discomfiting, but he said what Joe Wilson was implying. These are truths the body politic has to face, as ugly as they are.
I fully believe President Obama knew a lot of what he would be facing. He is a realist…….a compassionate realist.
Frank’s part about President Obama not answering his critics is powerful and can resonate with religious people, as he is almost quoting the part about Christ being accused by Pilate, where it says, “And he opened not his mouth.” Religious people will recognize that.
Jim Stuart talks about President Obama planting seeds of opportunity, and Frank Schaeffer is planting seeds of understanding for a certain demographic.
Your point is well-taken carolyn. I could certainly see why he felt the need to emphasize the particularly vitriolic nature of the Right and Left’s opposition to PBO. In other words, if they *could* lynch him, they would.

When my sons were young they only played with balls; footballs, baseballs, soccer balls. I started out with Sports Illustrated for Kids, then Sports Illustrated. I usually read the whole magazine. When I could talk sports with the guys in the office area, one of the other women asked me why. I told her I had two boys and I read Sports Illustrated. She couldn’t understand why I did. I told her in a way she could relate to, “It’s the best gossip rag out there”. ;)

I see the news report about Iran being upset because the US penalized companies who were breaking the sanctions placed on Iran…they feel blindsided…according the news report…I do not know why they are feeling blindsided…did they not believe the US would still hold companies accountable for breaking the sanctions….interesting

I watched this speech again yesterday afternoon, and was as blown away by it as I was the first time. The people standing outside in the back of the President (who prior to his speech were restless and somewhat distracting), were very much in tuned with him while he spoke. One man kept blowing kisses and sending it to the audience and/or to PBO while PBO spoke. It was really a sight to behold - the whole event.
