Yay! The Obama family home safe and sound after a long and I hope, wonderful vacation.
Thank you Chips for the coverage.

Apparently Frank Lampard will not be coming to NYC anytime soon. The NY sports pages say that Manchester is not letting him go. Manchester considers NYC a farm team or something and owns Lampard’s contract, so as long as he is playing as well as he has, too bad NYC.

Can someone explain to me why darts is a thing in the UK?

    • January 4, 2026 at 12:57 pm

Bizarrest of all, it’s HUUUUUUUGE in Holland!!

Just about every pub in Britain has a darts board, the people who play it convince themselves they’re athletes.

I think it’s the weather — they needed an indoor activity.

Growing up in SoCal, recess and PE were always outside.

When it rained we were cooped up inside the gym and had to play ridiculous games with a giant ball that we kicked around.

Darts takes more skill, but of course isn’t safe for kids inside a gym. :(

Oh, I LOVE playing darts at a pub. And I’m pretty good. But if you’ve ever watched a darts match it’s like a WWE event! They’ve got the signs, and the players march in like wrestlers. It’s actually quite fun.

It is so sweet to see our president bond so beautifully with his daughters. They’re old enough now to fully understand how lucky they are to have such an extraordinary, brilliant, loving man as their father. By 2017, Malia will have fully matured into young womanhood in the White House with Sasha not far behind her. They will both have witnessed first hand their father’s greatness and will be old enough to grasp what a seminal figure he is in history. That can’t help but transform their whole lives for the better.

Okay this is completely off topic but can someone explain to me why people cover their entire body with tattoos?

A tattoo on the back or arm or leg or whatnot I understand but from neck to ankles makes no sense to me and how is this considered good looking?

Okay I got that off my chest. Now I must go prepare dinner for the family this evening

    Pot Roast with veggies
    Baked Chicken over rice
    Collard Greens
    Rolls
    Sweet Tea
    Apple Pie (from Costco’s)

    Later everyone!

I thought “Egyptian influence” at first, and decided to google it.

Since pre-historic times … tattoos over the body were related to healing … religion … punishment … differentiation between the “roles” of men and women … war-inspired … slavery-inspired … traditional cultural symbols … decoration … an adjunct to body painting and piercing … for identification on the high seas and during military service … to include being used to mark Jews during the Holocaust, of course - in that case, to further demean them as property, while the world remained, once again, in its cocoon.

And for many, many other reasons, not to mention to recognize one’s favorite band or singers at the present time through a large tattoo on the back of your head. #IKnowPeople

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_tattooing

I’m sure you knew all this and were asking a rhetorical question, and may I add I don’t get full-body tattooing, either! U-G-L-Y.

Delurking for a moment. Malia and the President seems to have bonded more on this trip. Pictures haven’t shown Sasha very much. I sorta think that she doesn’t care much for all the pictures and fuss over the family. Malia seems to take it more in stride.

POTUS always says it best. I know most every night when I was traveling on business back in the 90s (my job included about 70% travel) the one and only channel I would watch in the hotel room after I got back from a business dinner was ESPN Sports Center. I wasn’t that interested in politics at the time and I didn’t need to know the local news and the national news I got with the USA Today newspaper under the door in the morning. So I always watched ESPN as my primary interest was every type of US sport. I’m sure I’ve watched Stuart Scott more than any other sports personality or newscaster and he made me appreciate other players who weren’t on my home/favorite teams. I’m so sad he’s gone.

Indeed he was! Did not realize that until I saw the sad news here and went to read this feature story about his life and work. http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/12118296/stuart-scott-espn-anchor-dies-age-49
            From this ESPN story:
“‘Stuart was born in Chicago, but he, along with two sisters and a brother, spent his formative years in North Carolina, where their father was a postal inspector who always had time to play after work. Stuart went to R.J. Reynolds High in Winston-Salem and then the University of North Carolina, where he played wide receiver and defensive back on the club football team, joined Alpha Phi Alpha and worked at the student radio station, WXYC. After graduating in 1987 with a degree in speech communication, Stuart was hired by WPDE-TV in Florence, S.C. He says that’s where he first came up with the pillow metaphor. “People say I stole it from a movie,” he told an interviewer in 1998, “but I first thought of that and said it on my first job … I just liked it.” ‘
            and this:
‘ “Some of his best moments on the air came when he adopted the persona of a preacher: “Can I get a witness from the congregation?!” And one of his best moments off the air came when a producer suggested he change a reference on his NBA show from Omega Psi Phi, the fraternity of Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal, to something more universal, like Animal House.

“I have friends who have no idea what that movie is about,” Stuart told him. “That movie was made two decades ago, and black fraternities have been around since 1906.” ‘
A great loss to the world on so many levels.

This is one more reason I loooooove TOD.

I’d heard about Warby Parker a while back, but then life happened and it slipped my memory. I was just thinking about purchasing new glasses and trying to find a time within the week to browse online for stores and styles, then BAM! LL to the rescue.

I’m going to use them since they don’t just take in all the profit but actually pay it forward.

      Thanks, LL.

No doubt part of DonnaD’s delicious dinner that she has abandoned TOD for, while we patiently wait for her invitations. ;)

Also don’t get today’s infatuation with tattoos. My father was a WWII vet, a Navy lifer, and he instilled at me at an early age the taboo against tattoos (and this was in San Diego, which was chock-full of tattoo parlors back in the day).

I do carry biases from my early years — like Gary Cooper admonishing Audrey Hepburn about how “tacky” ankle bracelets were.

    Mia Love defends Scalise
By Kevin Cirilli January 04, 2015, 10:40 am

Rep.-elect Mia Love (R-Utah) on Sunday defended House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and said he should remain in House leadership despite having spoken to a racist group in 2002.

Love, who is the first African American Republican woman elected to the House, denounced the racist groups on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”

“I believe he should stay in leadership,” Love said.

    http://www.marketwatch.com/story/december-likely-to-cap-off-best-year-of-job-creation-since-1999-2015-01-04?link=MW_Nav_NV

The revved-up U.S. economy probably produced another large batch of new jobs in December, setting the stage in 2015 for the quickest spurt of growth in at least a decade.

The U.S. likely added at least 220,000 jobs in the final month of 2014, according to economists polled by MarketWatch. And the preliminary 321,000 increase in November—the third-biggest gain since the recession ended in mid-2009—could be revised higher if recent history is a guide.

Add it all together and the economy might have generated nearly 3 million new jobs in 2014, the best performance since the U.S. created some 3.2 million jobs in 1999.

this random killing of black folks by the police department hearkens back to the time when the Klan terrorized the blk community…the NYPD for decades operated on a policy of Stop & Frisk…Deblasio stopped the policy of Stop & Frisk and is attempting to rein in & hold the police accountable for their abuse of power….this defiance by the NYPD…is a direct result of a police force that does not recognize the authority of the Mayor or his Police Commissioner…
