Got time for another family story o’mine? Just found out recently (from a note my mother left with a few family tidbits) that my grandfather - born in 1885, who went into the coal mines in Pennsy at age 11 - left home at age 16 “to join the Wild West.” He didn’t get far, but ah, the thought of it! He spent the rest of his life reading pocket western novels. That note explained a lot! <3
Yes, that’s what the oldest boy usually did in those old coal mining families, to help support the younger siblings. He later benefited from the coal miners’ union (I have one of his pocket union contract agreements from early in the last century). My mother said (although he was a pacifist, through and through) he used to say to anyone who’d listen, “If anybody says anything bad about John L. Lewis [President of United Mine Workers of America, 1920-60], I’ll kill ’em.”
Thanks for posting these, Bobfr. We had good speakers at the rally in Portland in front of Sen. Wyden’s office who made some of these points about undercutting our diplomatic clout.
YUP!! Fact is, they want a diverse energy grid and are going to rely on nuclear, solar and geothermal to provide it. The Russians, in particular, are eager to sell/build nuclear capacity for the Iranians. I do think, given the geography of the country that US manufacturers of wind power systems would have a strong market.
That’s exactly what terrifies the AIPAC crowd because they are so paranoid economic gains will all be used for terrorism instead of for digging Iran out of the hole the sanctions put the country in. This is the “reason” that Wyden and others are giving for doubting the Iran Deal is worth their support.
Good morning all of TODville. Today we leave So Cal and head back t Las Vegas to fly home to smokey Missoula. Guess the smoke is so bad they are telling everyone to stay in as much as possible. Very hard on all the schools etc.
I am so tired of all these gun people saying more guns. Where are the stats about gun deaths before everyone had guns.
Good morning MtMarilyn. It was a wonderful pleasure meeting you & your husband. I wish you clear skies for your travel and easy breathing once you are home.
We will stay in touch!!!!! I do hope you put your boss in for that White House Summit. He sounds just what they are looking for. Keep figuring the good fight.
I like Bernie Sanders OK, but I am pretty disgusted by his supporters’ attitudes, especially on Daily Kos. Today’s Des Moines Register had an editorial saying something a bit negative about Bernie’s military experience. Just to annoy these over-the-top Bernie-bots, I linked the editorial into a comment to one of the daily Bernie tributes. Almost immediately my comment got a nasty response. I can see why some people might have fun being a troll. Luckily, my foray in troll-dom was one-and-done. :-)
They are worse on Facebook. A gentlemen was sent an invite by a FB Friend to one of Bernie’s events. He responded very politely by thanking the person for the invite but stated that he wasn’t a fan of a socialist agenda. The onslaught that poured down on that man was a sight to be seen. He was a very articulate smart man and he took them to task about how they responded to him. It was poetry in motion. If I could find it I would bring it here for all to see but this happened sometime last week. They are truly disgusting. I questioned myself after reading it as to whether or not we acted like that in defense of PBO when he was running in 2007/2008 and I swear I don’t ever remember us being nasty like this.
That’s my facebook experience too. Very quick to call anyone who slightly hints at less than starry-eyed worship of Sanders a troll. People who just voiced support for Clinton, an actual Democrat after all, were called Republican trolls. And what really annoys me is the “FINALLY we have a progressive candidate with a progressive agenda!” comments. And what do they think we’ve had since 2007? I too have questioned what PBO supporters were like, but I don’t think we were quite as insulting and dismissive. It seems to me that we were fueled by that hopey-changely thing, and the inclusiveness of Candidate Obama’s message. It feels like the Sanders people are fueled by anger plus relief that here is a white male they can support without seeming regressive because he’s Socialist.
I remember and continue to exercise this admonition as an Obama campaign volunteer: Respect, empower, include, no drama, have fun and as added in 2012, win. This is not well understood as the bedrock of a community organizer with the discipline to stay true to the Obama approach. I relate it to two other models of human motivation: content, choice, collaboration and another; competence, autonomy, relatedness. They are basically all three the same model with different terms applied. These are supposed to be the basics of human motivation. Tap into them and you unleash so much potential for good. Our president is a genius and a genius with a beautiful soul at that.
Absolutely. “Respect, empower, include” is a good motto to live by, but the bottom line is you don’t convince people by insulting and dismissing them. You only build up resentments that come home to bite you when the candidate is chosen and everyone has to get behind him/her.
Hello TOD……It’s a Great Thursday. Sunny. Hot. Humid.
Driveway getting a deserved pampering…….Noisy workers with their drilling……Tar smell later today…. :(:(:( the smell makes me sick……but the work has got to be done before the Fall and the Winter.
Fantastic Early Start and R&S Combo, Chips. Thanks you.
Congrats J’OB on your FURST Ag :star:
GDP came in for 2nd Qtr at 3.7% Hmm? And Jebbie, Crumbles ;):?:
Rep Maloney of NY is a No Vote for the #IranDeal. She is one of the Wealthiest in Congress and it is sad that her Money isn’t a deterrence from AIPAC?
Shame!
He 1st appeared with MKelly, per L’OD’s show last night.
He is a grieving Dad. He can say whatever he wants if it helps him cope. He was also adamant about gun control…..the need for it and that he would work his butt off to make happen. I saw him on CNN this AM and he was hurting. Emotional. Confident. Sad. In Shock. Etc.
Sorry but that’s not the kind of “joke” you make about your daughter - grieving or not. That was inappropriate - I agree with nospin. And I have to have to ask, was he adamant about gun control PRIOR to this incident?
TOD is a place for pleasant respectful disagreements ;)
I don’t know the man. I have no idea what his stands on gun control was prior to his daughter’s untimely death. Some people find their callings on many issues due to a tragic event.
“Some people find their callings on many issues due to a tragic event.”
You’re right about that Nena - and I respect those who find their calling on a particular issue after being personally affected. But in this situation, we’re not talking about a rare disease, or a situation that had been on the back burner for decades and has now been triggered by a deadly event.
We’re talking about death by guns, and the issue of gun control is highly salient to anyone with a brain residing in the US for the past 4 years. We’ve witnessed the near-fatal shooting of US Rep Gabby Giffords, along with the killing of several other innocents). We’ve had votes in congress, NRA in the news, presidential actions, personal and emotional pleas from the US President himself, as well as from gun control activists and lawmakers alike. We’ve had repeated mass shootings including the brutal massacre of five-yr olds in their classrooms - where they were supposed to be. We’ve had church worshipers being gunned down as they welcomed the shooter into their sacred space. And I could on and on…
It would take a person who’s callously indifferent, or vastly opposed to gun control to not have been supportive of gun control measures - regardless of whether they were personally affected or not.
So I’m not here to pretend that this guy knew nothing about the dangers of guns in the hands of disturbed individuals…and only now is seeing the light. But I agree, I don’t know what his prior stand was - so I have to ASK: what was his position on gun control prior to this incident?
And I stand by my comment about the inappropriateness of his “Fox Girl” remarks.
Hi Hopefruit, I thought the same thing about his gun control position when I read the above comment. Sad that they only become awakened after it becomes a personal tragedy.
What is the history with Christie and Teachers? His whole campaign seems to be that paying teachers minimum wage will solve every problem that exists in the US today.
This is the position of the John Birch Society which is now referred to as the Tea Party Patriots. Its how I came to understand the weird combination of positions among the Libertarians/Tea Party. Also years ago I checked out the Wikipedia post for the JBS and could easily see the positions taken historically. A few months back I tried to do the same and the posting for that group had been scrubbed and replaced by acceptable sounding positions. I am not kidding.
Public schools are called “government schools” in the JBS mindset and that’s something to eliminate.
eff her. If she had run the party properly, ran on and supported POTUS and his successful policies and bothered to learn ANYTHING from 2010 and 2014, we’d be happy to donate.
How hard it is to shout the successes of this administration from the rooftops (or at least in front of the mics)? How hard is it to support your president and leader of your party? I really loathe this DWS lady. The only time I’ve seen her/them have anything positive about PBO is when they are asking me for my money. other than that? no interest in helping advance anything he is doing.
Hahahahahaha
This quote could only come from a deliberate loser. This dope sure knows what losing takes. She is an expert on the subject.
Yesterday John Podesta said of the Clinton campaign, “We like where we are.” It is 2007-2008 again.
Hillary supporters were saying “We like where we are” right up to the last second of the final primary in June, 2008.
Their rally that night was held in a basement gymnasium at Hunter College in Manhattan which had no cell service. Her audience that night had to leave the rally to find out that they lost that one, too.

Whoa!
It’s the only word I can ever think of, when I see Leave a comment. Like I’m a cowgirl or somethin’.
Oh, well, carry on, cowgirls and boys.
 Yeeeeeeeee haw!
That’s my alternate word!!!!!!!!!
Cowgirl?
Yes?
No problem no problem.
(You almost stumped me with your “Cowgirl”? Ha. But I’m from New Jersey, and we don’t ride away without answering questions. Just ask Cory Booker. :)
Ha!
Oh Don, how did you ever know I had you in mind when I made my “real football” crack? Your defense of the American game is a classic.
Love you, my brother.
You roped yourself a first place, Jacqueline! Congratulations.
That I did, Judith. That I did.

Coal mines at 11……What a story!
Yes, that’s what the oldest boy usually did in those old coal mining families, to help support the younger siblings. Well, everybody has to have a plan.
Oh, no! My fair city is the laughingstock of twitter again!
Sorry about that. At least you don’t have Maine’s governor to deal with.
Woah. Glad it’s the Portland on the other side of the country. Ick.
And we have these lovely public loos, so no real excuse to go on the street.
Good morning TOD!
Congrats Jacqueline :)

So will I …..
;)
Thanks for posting these, Bobfr. We had good speakers at the rally in Portland in front of Sen. Wyden’s office who made some of these points about undercutting our diplomatic clout.
That’s exactly the type of action required, Judith. Thank you for all you and your fellow Oregonians are doing to educate Senator Wyden!!
Hey, good morning, Bob! The UK’s getting right in there. Nothing like a little trade and commerce to start things out!
egg.zack.leeee Jacqueline :) The Germans, French, Italians, Japanese ….. are already hard at it, as well!
Yay! We’ll get there one fine day, I’m guessing.
Of course, Iran probably said to itself, “why f**k around with a bomb when we can make trillions of dollars”
Not a bad plan, either!
Bobr, can you imagine all the economic power Iran will have in a couple of years?
That’s exactly what terrifies the AIPAC crowd because they are so paranoid economic gains will all be used for terrorism instead of for digging Iran out of the hole the sanctions put the country in. This is the “reason” that Wyden and others are giving for doubting the Iran Deal is worth their support.
Vast, Don, truly vast - not merely because of oil, but because of the exceptional young talent & very strong, multi-faceted industrial skills.

Will no one rid me of this ectomorphic Jamaican?
(What? I like the word “ectomorph”. So rarely get to use it.)
I don’t know what it means, but I agree with you.
Ectomorph: a lean and lanky body type.

Hello TOD
As Summer comes to an end and Fall is in sight keep the homeless in mind and please share this message.

How does this invalidate his message? As for the joke, it’s not that unusual and is how some people cope with the grieving process.
Oooops!
What is the history with Christie and Teachers? His whole campaign seems to be that paying teachers minimum wage will solve every problem that exists in the US today.
Republicans hate teachers, reasons for which I can’t fathom…….maybe too smart?
They like their constituents to be uneducated? - got to be why they still vote republican.

One thing that this vote on the #IranDeal reveals is who prioritizes peace over political positions & power
Our wizard:
eff her. If she had run the party properly, ran on and supported POTUS and his successful policies and bothered to learn ANYTHING from 2010 and 2014, we’d be happy to donate.
She loves AIPAC more than U.S. and her party.
They’re not getting a dime out of me. I’ve told them when they called that I’m not happy with their treatment of The President.
I imagine the DNC is getting a lot of no responses from the PBO supporters when they beg us for money.
Maybe Debbie is not concern because she is going to get a large donation from Netanyahu for her vote..
I swear she is a GOP plant.

Better hope VP Biden is delaying strategically.
From the same woman who said she is concerned about racial purity within the Jewish community.
The number now is 50 migrants……so sad.
They are not ” migrants ” they are refugees fleeing war. ” Migrants ” are people seeking work .
