This flip-flopping is just about politics. She wants the endorsement of powerful unions ( who are short-sided in their opposition to TPP), and she’s afraid of losing too much supporters to Bernie Sanders.

She’ll contort herself into a pretzel to explain her flip-flopping. She’ll find a way to say that “from what she knows”, the deal is different from what she thought it would be, or something…

Note the “from what I know” language. Giving her room to flip-flop again when it will be necessary.

I spent the last 10 minutes trying to write something in response to the above but figured …. why even bother. The woman is married to the man who gave us NAFTA. With every other person stating THIS WEEK just how important TPP is to the USA and how it puts American workers first and is a benefit to so many different groups…for her to completely miss the boat and say she is against this trade deal confirms for me she is a lousy decision maker and will never be POTUS. She completely misjudged the direction of the wind and blew in the wrong direction….again.

Good to see my senator franken at the labor summit today. MN is in process of raising Min wage here. Of course when it was debated we all heard the same strum and drang about how it would kill jobs, lower tax revenue, etc etc.

I really applaud our president and his ability to think outside the box on this issue (and many others).

Like the president told Putin and all those other dictators for life, if you need a lifetime term then you have failed your people as you have not built anything worth passing on. Our president will do more in his 8 years than any double handful of dictators for life could imagine.

        I feel your outrage, Meta.

HRC’s dominant goal is to win the (D) nomination and thereby remove PBO bit by bit from history. She wins if she becomes POTUS and if the GOP gets the WH.
The GOP is only too willing to assist her in getting the nomination. Then they win the general with one of their guys who are even worse than George Bush.

Bernie was the first pinprick in her inevitable balloon.
Mayor de Blasio was the next one—although de Blasio is on my bad list for since he said there are enough Dems in the race.
Next was the pitiful turnout at her announcement months ago and the 1/2 empty rooms since then.

I have been espousing this view for all of 2015 and as loony as it sounded back in January I bet at least some at TOD can now see at least a bit of sense in it.

Thanks, meta, for these spot-on tweets. Now I understand why many people say that HRC can’t be trusted. Personally, I am angry that the Democrats running for president-well may be it’s a stretch to call Bernie Sanders a Democrat-are running against a sitting Democratic President instead of running against Republicans. For me, as a strong supporter of President Obama, I see no reason why I should support any Democratic presidential candidate who is running against a sitting Democratic president who has accomplished so much, despite the vicious and unrelenting opposition from Republicans.

          October 7, 2025 at 7:01 pm

I couldn’t agree with you more. It makes ZERO sense to me. Why go after PBO when he’s not running? Sanders may be partly responsible for that but I also think there’s a desire in HRC to always set herself apart, no matter how craven it looks. We’ve seen it before.

        October 7, 2025 at 5:16 pm

We see the gold standard politician in PBO who genuinely puts forth policies that he feels with improve our society as a whole. Bernie is a purist and about as far to the left as one can be on policies that will probably never see the light of day and will eternally remain in fairyland where extreme ideas go to die. Hillary is trying to catch a little bit of the magic from both of these popular politicians (hence she’ll flip-flop on her support of the TPP). She panders it’s that simple. It doesn’t bother me as much as it does some because before PBO it was common place with candidates. It’s more prevalent on the Republican side. They pander to their crowds, to their donors and to their supporters. It’s par for course with most politicians. It’s just that PBO set a new standard so its hard to see someone on our side be so blatant with it. Not to make excuses but she’s old school. She is who she is and this is the only way she knows how to be a politician. I bet they poll tested this policy among Dems and decided that she would gain some kind of advantage by flip flopping on it. Silly Season!

Also, some have stated that they feel that our debates are going to be boring. I think just the opposite. The Republicans build their debates up by making Trump the centerpiece and giving their viewers the idea that there will be fireworks when they all get on stage. They don’t do a darn thing when they are on that stage with that buffoon. They are all chumps and scared to go after Trump for fear he’ll retaliate. It’s been a pathetic show for them thus far IMO.

        But the Dems……

Be prepared for fireworks. Martin and Bernie are going to take Hillary to the woodshed..!!!! She better come ready! It’s gonna be must see tv. Mark my words!!!

Like I said, PBO has set a knew standard and the expectations are that our politicians should follow in his footsteps.

            But in reality……

Of course politicians are in low regard. Just take a look at Congress. They have never been rated so low. The internet just confirmed what society has always known and that is a politician will say anything to get elected and we now have the video to prove it.

I highly doubt that PBO or anybody else in his Administration cares very much what Hillary does or says. They shrugged off last week’s “giving notice” about Keystone and will care as little about this.

HRC’s theory must be that throwing everything at PBO and VPB is a good idea and sooner or later something will hit its mark.

I read a few of the comments - there have to be a dozen folks paid by the GOP/gun lobby that traverse the internet making the same lying statements about guns whenever the subject is mentioned. Guns kill, it is what they are designed to do - no amount of lobbying can change that fact.

Perhaps the one and only positive that comes from the mass murders in the US - gives the anti-gun lobby much more power in countries outside of the US. We have folks wanting to overturn our gun laws. While the US keeps killing its citizens because 2nd amendment - our laws will stay in place.

Good day TOD. Not surprised by HRC’s position on TPP but I am surprised so many here expected something different:-) And contrary to Fournier’s comment and implication, I don’t think this has anything to do with PBO. Rather, it is Bernie and the unions that formed the basis of her decision. Do you recall she got the backing of the ;largest union just 3 days ago? I’d bet a ton of money that this was her promise to them to get that support. She is losing support with women and blacks, she cannot (in her mind) run the risk of having the union support go to Bernie. So this was her deal with the unions. The few days separating these two announcements is not coincidental, it is tit for tat. Isn’t this what we all expect from her? I certainly do, which is why I didn’t support her in the 2008 cycle.

Haven’t commented much recently……but have been thinking about Hillary’s tactics. Seems to me, she is doing the same kinds of things she did to POTUS eight years ago, and we know where that got her. She is inconsistent, inauthentic ( to use today’s favorite word) and pandering to whoever talked to her most recently. She and her team have no overall strategy…..it’s all reactive tactics, without any consistency. I do not see this boding well for her. So far she’s ahead, but nothing really counts until next year. I just have this feeling we’re going to see a whole lot of fruitbasket upset in each party. Don’t know what or who……but I just don’t feel like anything at all is settled. No one is building consistently, no one really knows what he or she is doing from my point of view.

“Seems to me, [Hillary] is doing the same kinds of things she did to POTUS eight years ago …. pandering to whoever talked to her most recently …..it’s all reactive tactics …”

Yes, and for me this is the main point of contrast I would make between her and VPJoe if I ever felt like justifying my choice when confronted on twitter with the argument that VPJoe’s pasts has its holes as much as hers does. Quite frankly, I feel HRC’s recent actions do show a candidate who hasn’t learned much in the years since she last campaigned. Conversely, I think VPJoe has not only been intimately exposed to a different form of presidential leadership, he *has* learned a lot. He has an inside track - one which HRC was herself somewhat exposed to, but didn’t make the best use of, I don’t think. Someone said womewhere that Hillary is, and has always been, a fighter. I would add that she doesn’t know when to lay down her arms, not in surrender but in coalition building. She wouldn’t be a restful leader, I think.

That’s how the Clintons operate. They tell themselves they’ll find “a way” to solve the problem later. They look at what they need right now to help their political prospects. And later they find a trick to pivot to another position that suits them at that moment. In the case of th TPP, they know that President Obama can have some help from the republicans and they don’t care if he is victim of demagoguery from the left. They’ll let him fight alone. But if the president needs democratic votes, they’ll work behind the scenes to whip up those votes , with promises of trade-offs, fundraising, etc.

And in the end if republicans balk and want to give President Obama a crushing defeat, the Clintons will have to flip-flop again and announce that after reading the text they can “live with that”, etc. Since many union leaders and many on the “left base” are freaking out about TPP and are not really looking at facts, the Clintons will end up in a position where they make a lot of people angry for “betrayal”. But behind the scenes again, they’ll try to win support by negotiating, again, some trade-off like support on X or Y, or a promise to help reelection, whatever.

        Transactional politics. Always.

They don’t know anything else. They’re convinced that it’s the only way to do politics. Sadly.

America has been SPOILED with a president who has the courage to be himself, to take positions that are not necessarily popular. But are in the interest of his country and its people.

I’ve never trust a politician like I trust Barack Obama. Consistent. Authentic. Courageous. It’s RARE.

P.S. I’m not saying Hillary and Bill are evil. At some degree they care about the progressive agenda. If Hillary gets the nomination, no question in my mind I will pray she wins. But boy do I HATE their politics of pandering and of manipulation behind the scenes.

WHOA, Dan faved my tweet so I think he must be scratching his head pretty hard, too. Wonder if he’s glad he’s not in the WH right about now.

Well, world leaders are not fools. They know that Hillary is opposing it just for short term political reasons. They’re confident she will “come to reason” in a few months. Maybe Bill is on the phone right now…

But how do we even know that? She’s claiming to have higher standards than PBO. Yes, it’s politically expedient, but it’s a really bonehead move if she doesn’t mean it at all.

I think she certainly believed it in 2014, but then all her candidates lost. She may think she’s invincible now but not sure what she believes anymore.

I see BWD has given up her doomed effort to like HRC. She tried very hard to be fair and open-minded and I salute this talented tweeter and Obama supporter.

I wonder how all those people who worked on PBO’s campaigns and in the WH now feel about being on Team Hillary. Oh well.
