Schools in Beijing are to close and outdoor construction to stop after the Chinese capital issued its first “red alert” over smog levels.
The red alert is the highest possible, and has not been used in the city before, the state-run Xinhua news agency says.
Authorities expect more than three consecutive days of severe smog.
Cars with odd and even number plates will be banned from driving on alternate days.
Current pollution levels in Beijing are actually lower than last weekâs, but the red alert has been placed because of levels expected over the coming days.

Germany has registered 964,574 new asylum-seekers in the first 11 months of the year, putting it on course for more than a million in 2015.
The number of migrants arriving has not slowed despite the winter cold, with a record high of 206,101 in November.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in August that the country expected 800,000 asylum-seekers over the year.
Documents leaked in October suggested the government was privately anticipating the arrival of up to 1.5m.
Germany has registered more asylum-seekers than any other nation in Europe, although at about 1% of its population, less per capita than several smaller nations.
Registered asylum seekers are not always accepted however, and rates of success vary from country to country. Fewer than 10% of applicants last year in Hungary - which has one of the highest shares of asylum-seekers in Europe - resulted in a positive decision.
The rate in Germany was 42%, while in Sweden - which registered the highest number of applications per capita - it was 77%. Across the EU, the success rate about 45%.

I respect the police; I have the upmost respect for the police. A guy that I went to high school with back in Miami Florida is a detective on “The first 48.” I have family members that are police officers. My aunt was a detective for over twenty years in Atlanta Georgia. I know what police have to deal with on a daily basis, but our humanity must be valued.

Every time I see this guying walking somewhere in the institution he wants to talk politics. This guy drains the life out of me, even at fucking lunch when I see him at the cafeteria he has this shit eating grin on his face. His very existence tortures me.
How about just saying that in the interest of peaceful and professional co-existence, youâd prefer not to discuss politics, which tends to become too heated and inflammatory when people donât see eye to eye.
