    Good morning, TOD.
I am interested in where and how all of us will be watching tonight.
    C-SPAN? Amazon? CNN? MSNBC? Fox?

My first stop will be MSNBC. If they interfere by covering the screen with crawls or headlines or chatter, I’ll got to C-SPAN.

HERE’S PROOF THAT THE PRESS WON’T LET DONALD TRUMP DESTROY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY
    January 11, 2025

There’s a widespread belief that Democrats are likely to win this year’s presidential election no matter what, and that the GOP is utterly doomed if Donald Trump is the nominee. I don’t share that belief — but even if it’s accurate, even if a Trump-Clinton or Trump-Sanders race ends in a Democratic landslide, I can guarantee you that the GOP will recover from the Trump campaign almost instantly.

How? The press will do what it always does when Republicans stumble: It will give the GOP a do-over.

Don’t believe me? Go to Politico today and read about Paul Ryan, who’s positioning himself to be the face of that do-over:

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Paul Ryan talked about the ills of the criminal-justice system. He quizzed GOP presidential hopefuls at a forum here about what they’ve done to help the impoverished and vowed that Republicans, if they put their minds to it, could ā€œmake breakthroughsā€ in the war on poverty.

This is what Ryan wants his Republican Party to look like. But it bears little resemblance to the one on display in the presidential primary, a battle that some senior Republicans say has gotten so coarse that it’s putting their congressional majorities at risk.

So as Ryan tries to reassert the party’s substantive side with a series of policy rollouts in the coming months — a conservative replacement to Obamacare, tax reform, a criminal justice bill — he’s also looking to give the House GOP its own identity.

      January 12, 2025 at 9:58 am

Ryan invited the The Little Sisters of the Poor to the SOTU as guests.

He is just a fraud, like all the rest of them.

        January 12, 2025 at 10:31 am

Paul Ryan why didn’t he invite the little sisters of the rich. The rich are the ones he care about.

      • 51 arapaho415
        January 12, 2025 at 10:37 am

        GM Linda.

CBS radio news played a clip of Ryan this morning saying what he’d like PBO to say “repeal Obamacare” etc. — an entire fantasy list of GOP talking points, unmoored from reality.

Ryan is completely unserious — how many Dems would have said that GWB’s last SOTU should include a statement that he would resurrect the Americans who died in that fraud known as the Iraq War — Americans hated GWB’s war but didn’t support unhinged statements from its leaders then. Now it has become commonplace and acceptable. SMH.

      • 53 zizi2
        January 12, 2025 at 11:01 am

That’s been my thought too for a long time now. I even believe he secretly engineered Boehner’s ouster & got McCarthy to trip up, only to pretend he didn’t want the speakership. But this is exactly where he wants to be now, to catapult himself into presidency in 2020. And the media will bend over twice to remake him in the image of Reagan, conservative savior.

And he’ll put syrupy make-up on their odious Ayn Randian policies plus cynical spewings about tackling poverty. He will be the nightmare that completely dismantles FDR’s New Deal and anything progressive we’ve had. He’s sly like John Roberts. Dangerous!

        • 54 prettyfoot58
          January 12, 2025 at 11:38 am

i know that folks like Ryan can be dangerous because he will try to come off as a moderate and try to fool us with the help of the press, of course …but i believe that our focus must always be on hope,…strategy…and GOTV…because when DEMS and DEM leaning folks vote… we Win…there has been much progress under the President…i suspect that with the SOTU address…he will not only outline the successes…but will show us how to move forward and protect that progress….

Two Southern states point in two different directions
    01/12/16 08:00 AM
    By Steve Benen

When the Affordable Care Act was taking shape several years ago, one of its more popular provisions was the creation of state-based exchange marketplaces. By now, most Americans are probably familiar with the concept: states would create marketplaces for insurers to compete for the public’s business, and consumers could choose the best plan for their needs.

Kentucky, previously a national leader in ACA implementation, embraced the idea with great enthusiasm, creating the Kynect system, which proved to be a great success. Newly elected Gov. Matt Bevin (R), however, is dismantling it anyway. The Louisville Courier-Journal reported yesterday (via Charles Gaba):

Following through on a campaign pledge, Gov. Matt Bevin has notified federal authorities he plans to dismantle kynect, Kentucky’s health insurance exchange created under the Affordable Care Act. […]

    ………………………………………………………………..

But there’s also an under-appreciated irony to this: Bevin, the far-right Republican governor, is also abandoning the tenets of his own ideology. By scrapping Kynect, the Tea Party Kentuckian is shifting power from his state to Washington, D.C., on purpose, without explanation.

    • 58 0388jojothecat
      January 12, 2025 at 10:03 am

Didn’t Turtle face say nothing would happen to Kynect? Oh well I hope those whose lives were saved are ok killing others thanks to their votes or non-votes.

Thanks Chips for posting this moving video.

100% Joe, honest and forthright — love him so much because he has PBO’s integrity and heart, with the spontaneity his fans appreciate.

Only the most heartless cynic could possibly not believe that The First Family is part of the Biden clan (and vice versa) if they’ve seen PBO’s eulogy to Beau and this clip of @VP.

  16. 64 0388jojothecat
    January 12, 2025 at 10:00 am

I would have thought that Beau Biden would have had life insurance especially after having kids. In his job as AG, he would have a pension and a pension for his time at DOJ. Plus his kids are eligible SS for dependents or did they stop that after Paul Ryan became speaker.

    • 65 prettyfoot58
      January 12, 2025 at 10:14 am

this was before Beau Biden passed…they were talking about a scenario in which Beau Biden had to step down from his job as AG…due to illness

    • 66 arapaho415
      January 12, 2025 at 10:22 am

      What PF58 said.

@VP was concerned that the initial stroke that Beau suffered might have impaired Beau’s cognitive ability, which (because he shares Joe and Jill’s integrity) would force him to step down from his job as Delaware AG — leaving the family with no income (for basic needs like housing and food) at which point Joe and Jill would help financially.

Doctors determined that Beau suffered no mental impairment, so Beau was able to serve out his full term (instead of resigning with no pension) with less impact on family’s income.

We do not know the financial situation of his son’s family. Obviously it was distressing enough for the President offering to step in. That’s what real friends do.

When you become disabled due to an illness you can file for disability. My cousin’s ex-wife can no longer work due to non-cancerous tumors that were removed in and around her head. She is on morphine and pain killers due to the pain and could no longer work. She is on SS-Disability as well as her daughter who is under 18yrs old. I would assume that if Beau Biden had to leave his job early because the brain tumor affected his mental capacity he would have been eligible for these payments that cover himself, his wife, and his kids.

    DA HAIL!?!?!?

As poison gas billows, profits take priority, residents suffer

Congressman Brad Sherman talks with Rachel Maddow about how he and his Porter Ranch, California neighbors are coping with the massive, months-long, toxic gas leak in their town, and how the pace of dealing with the gas is slowed by the insistence that the gas be sold at regular market rate instead of being disposed of as the environmental crisis that it is.

    • 72 arapaho415
      January 12, 2025 at 10:51 am

Despite CA being one of the most highly regulated states in the country, the public utilities here thumb their noses at the thought of being law-abiding members of society.

Some of the worst US environmental disasters recently have been in CA and due to utility company negligence.

2010 - San Bruno gas explosion that killed 8, destroyed dozens of homes
Last year - Santa Barbara oil spill
Current (started in October) — the Porter Ranch methane leak, which is spewing tons of methane into the atmosphere here every. single. day. Methane is colorless and odorless — residents are feeling the effect of additives which alert them to the leak — but the impact on carbon released into the atmosphere is equivalent to millions of additional cars here.

not to be a wet blanket, but while i’ve seen a couple of these and thought they were entertaining, i’m getting disturbed how commonplace distracted driving is becoming, and these clips encourage it even more and make it seem cool and okay. Some other show was just doing it too (conan o’brien maybe?). feels like over half the cars i see on the roads now are drunk drivers, but when passing them of course just see they’re looking at a phone or messing with the dash controls.

        GM 4more.

The prevalence of distracted driving is indeed alarming — scary how many people don’t pay attention — I am now the very definition of a defensive driver (don’t want to contribute to the stats of those adversely affected by other irresponsible drivers).

If it’s any consolation, the cars on film which focus on their occupants are actually on flatbed trucks with cameras, person in driver’s seat is not actually driving. At least in SoCal (quite common to see here) — not sure about Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars recent skit with PBO.

The young AA man yesterday on the video expressing how sad he was that this is PBO last year was actually driving in SoCal. He mentioned he was on the 405 fwy in broad daylight and you could see he was passing cars and although he was paying attention to all the drivers around him, still it’s a distraction.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Police in Cincinnati say a man has fatally shot his 14-year-old son in their home, thinking he was an intruder.

Police say the man thought his son had caught the bus for school Tuesday morning, but the teen returned home soon afterward. Police say the man heard a noise in the basement and checked on it with a gun in his hand. Police say the father fired after apparently being startled, hitting the boy in the neck.

Authorities say the father called 911 and the boy was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where he died Tuesday morning.

i wish it was simply followed as it was written, which is about “militias” and those are defined in the constitution itself as being what we now call the national guard (article 1, section 8). it’s been purposely misconstrued over the years to mean everybody and unlimited, and of course we have no actual journalism on the national level anymore that will inform voters of this fact. we don’t need to remove or alter it…just follow the simple english words of the 2nd as they are.

      This is a great article:

“But year after year, White House staffers tell reporters that this year’s State of the Union address will be ā€œmore than a laundry listā€ of policy proposals; this time, the predictions that President Obama’s speech will be ā€œnon-traditionalā€ may actually be true.”

“And few presidents have been better prepared to deliver the speech that his aides are promising: a thematic overview of America accomplishments over the past seven years and the challenges and choices confronting the country in the years ahead. Those who listen on Tuesday night may well hear a masterful orator-in-chief at the top of his game.”

  25. 98 prettyfoot58
    January 12, 2025 at 11:02 am

Hillary Clinton jumped the gun a bit on this one, given that Sanders hasn’t released his proposal yet. But one has to wonder when he will finally get around to doing that. Until he does, it is difficult to say how much control his plan will cede to Republican governors. Given how they’ve handled Medicaid expansion, there is good reason to be concerned.

A US-led coalition air strike has destroyed a bank used by the Islamic State group in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

A US official told the BBC two 900kg bombs had hit the building on Monday.

He estimated that millions of dollars earned by IS through oil sales, looting and extortion had been destroyed.

Video posted online by IS showed damage to a building. The coalition has increased strikes against facilities that fund IS activities including oil fields it controls.

The coalition has hit “one or two” buildings that store IS money in the past, the US official told the BBC, but Monday’s strike is likely to be the biggest to date.

    14. Foreign leaders’ (allies and frenemies) stories of their encounters with PBO

Will be watching the SOTU on C-Span (will skip the call-in and the GOP response) filled with pride, love, and admiration (no tears until 2017), and something sparkly. I will watch alone so that I can savor each moment then come to TOD to share feelings and reflections.
