First Lady Michelle Obama: Let’s Change The Conversation Around Mental Health

Ryan joined the Navy when he was 20 years old, and he was deployed to Iraq for the first time a few years later. He served on a team that disarmed roadside bombs and IEDs, and when those bombs exploded, they would rush to the scene to clear any remaining explosives while sorting through unimaginable wreckage and carnage. In recognition of his incredible valour, Ryan was awarded a Bronze Star and an Army Commendation Medal. But when Ryan returned home to his wife and two young daughters after his second deployment, the war stayed with him. He had constant splitting headaches, nightmares and panic attacks, and his ears just wouldn’t stop ringing. He would pace his home at night, worried that his family was in danger. One evening, he finally hit rock bottom. After laying awake in bed crying, he got up, headed to the bathroom, and prepared to take his own life. Through my work with service members and veterans as part of Joining Forces - the initiative Dr Jill Biden and I launched to rally Americans to honour and support our veterans and military families - I’ve seen that Ryan’s experience isn’t unique.

But the veterans and service members who do struggle are not alone - not by a long shot. In fact, roughly one in five adults - more than 40 million Americans - suffer from a diagnosable mental health condition like depression or anxiety. These conditions affect people of every age and every background: our kids and grandparents, our friends and neighbours. That’s why the Affordable Care Act expanded mental health and substance use disorder benefits and parity protections for more than 60 million Americans and required new plans to cover depression screenings for adults and behavioral assessments for kids. That’s also why my husband put more mental health counsellors in place for veterans and signed a bill to help prevent veteran suicide.

      Please get on the call - OFA will have simple but important everyone can take to apply pressure on the Senate to approve the Presidents nominee. These are the same tactics used to pass the Iran Deal and to spread the word about ACA. If you can post to a blog, send a tweet, use email to contact your personal network or post to Facebook, there will be an important job for you. Thanks for posting it Judith.

        It could be someone trying to capitalize on the name. You go in and register some names for a fee. This person could have created several combinations. Then, when the real Rubio wants it, it is already taken. Everything has its price.

      “I’ve generally tried to go easy on Bernie Sanders. I like his vision, and I like his general attitude toward Wall Street. But this is insane. If anything, it’s worse than the endless magic asterisks that Republicans use to pretend that their tax plans will supercharge the economy and pay for themselves. It’s not even remotely in the realm of reality. If it were, France and Germany and Denmark would all be Croesian paradises by now.

      A group of stuffy establishment economists says “no credible economic research” supports Friedman’s analysis, which “undermines our reputation as the party of responsible arithmetic.” Or, in Austan Goolsbee’s more colorful language, Sanders’ plans have “evolved into magic flying puppies with winning Lotto tickets tied to their collars.”

      Enough is enough. Everyone needs to get back to reality. This ain’t it.”

      Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) on Wednesday called for President Obama to nominate a Supreme Court justice that has a chance to be approved by the Senate — breaking with Senate GOP colleagues who are determined not to consider any Obama nominee.

      =====

      Of course, he’s using that “will of the people” phrase and thinks that chances of approval are slim.

      So now we’re going from President Obama should even be allowed to nominate someone, to nominate someone, but we won’t approve them.

    Wisconsin’s local primary election put the state’s new voter ID law to the test Tuesday, causing problems that left officials seriously concerned about how voters will be impacted this November.

    Though the law’s implementation was mostly smooth, some students and veterans were unable to cast regular ballots, because the state doesn’t recognize a federal veterans’ benefits card or a state university ID for voting purposes.

    A Please Read:

    After all, it’s easy to articulate a belligerent foreign policy based solely on unilateral military action, a policy that sounds tough and acts dumb; it’s harder to craft a foreign policy that’s tough and smart. It’s easy to dismantle government safety nets; it’s harder to transform those safety nets so that they work for people and can be paid for. It’s easy to embrace a theological absolutism; it’s harder to find the right balance between the legitimate role of faith in our lives and the demands of our civic religion. But that’s our job. And I firmly believe that whenever we exaggerate or demonize, or oversimplify or overstate our case, we lose. Whenever we dumb down the political debate, we lose. A polarized electorate that is turned off of politics, and easily dismisses both parties because of the nasty, dishonest tone of the debate, works perfectly well for those who seek to chip away at the very idea of government because, in the end, a cynical electorate is a selfish electorate.

    North Carolina’s primary is less than a month away, but the key swing state may be forced to postpone. A federal court ruling last week declared the state’s voting maps unconstitutional thanks to racial gerrymandering, and ordered them to be redrawn. Unless the Supreme Court intervenes, state lawmakers will have to scramble to create new maps that don’t pack African American voters into small, oddly shaped districts that make the surrounding districts whiter and easier for Republicans to win.

    Yet this week, as North Carolina lawmakers prepared to create these revised maps, they spoke openly about making sure the state is still gerrymandered along political lines, if not racial ones…Thanks to a Supreme Court ruling in 2004, states are free to use gerrymandering to entrench the political power of the majority party.

    Lawmakers and North Carolina voters are also butting heads on whether to postpone the state’s March 15 primary election. The question presents somewhat of a lose-lose situation for voters. If the maps are changed and the election delayed, thousands of people who have already submitted absentee ballots could be disenfranchised. There could also be a great deal of voter confusion from such last-minute changes, especially if they are poorly publicized. State Republicans have said the election should go forward with the current maps, saying that they were used in the 2012 and 2014 elections and that one more wouldn’t hurt.
