Yes! Over the past 8 years, so many names have graced this page, as blog tyrants, regulars, lurkers, and of course our revered founder Chipsticks. It’s been a most welcoming place, as well as a serious source for reportage and discourse. Nerdy Wonka, I just wish I could draw you in a cape and tights, with some kind of awesome headgear, NW emblazoned on your noble chest- holding up the giant TOD insignia while the storms crackle all around!

Jennifer Palmieri of Hillary’s campaign pushed back on this. But Axe needs to get a grip. He may be right, but it’s not about him - there’s too much at stake to point the finger at our side, in public. Call Hillary’s campaign if you want to get the word to them, fool.

Thank you always and forever NerdyWonka. You keep on bringing the news and the views and the inspiration and more. We are so blessed. Coming here means the world, and reveals the world, and reminds me how good things are in so many ways and how blessed we are to be living in the time of POTUS/FLOTUS. I loved especially Don’s comments on POTUS and Hillary on the Early Bird Chat thread this morning. Lovely and moving. Donna Dem, your gift of musical moments a few days ago when we needed the beat and the joy and high notes and celebrations and the twinkling smile of POTUS at the mike fixing to break into song; it got me back on track, and it lifted my heart and reminded me of everything it’s so easy to forget given the things that conspire to rob us of joy and hope and spirit. What a good place, this village. You all bless me every day. We bless each other. Bless ALL our hearts! Love to CHIPS, and to all the media people out there who are doing their jobs and bringing truth and insight and stories and light.

This story in the New York Times today moved my heart completely. Splendid portraits of people who have traveled to the camp at Standing Rock to be present and witness and protest for water and safety and dignity and justice for the Native Americans whose rights have been violated still again. Wish the photos would show up here — is there a way to make that happen when I am posting a link? Anyway, click it and take a little time. Short commentary with each photo. If you can view on computer screen instead of phone, do so. They are large and gorgeous.

Hi Nancie. Sharing one of the examples before heading off to bed -

Howard Eagle Shield - Sioux of North Dakota (Credit Alyssa Schukar for The New York Times)

ā€œThis is my home, and my granddaughters are going to be here long after I’m gone,ā€ Mr. Eagle Shield said.

He grew up in North Dakota, on the Standing Rock Reservation. ā€œThere was trees all the way through here, all the way down to the Nebraska border,ā€ he said of his youth. ā€œThere were trees big enough that it would take five or six guys to hold their hands around to circle those trees. And they’re all flooded out; they’re gone after they put this dam up.ā€

Arrow Heart: Lakota and Dakota of South Dakota (Credit Alyssa Schukar for The New York Times)

Arrow Heart, a senior at Little Wound School in Kyle, S.D., travels with his family to the Standing Rock Reservation every year for the annual pow wow, a spiritual gathering for indigenous communities.

ā€œI’ve been doing that for 15 years now. Haven’t missed it once,ā€ he said, adding that it was ā€œawesome that people are getting together to protect the water.ā€

as I look at the photos and listen to PBO in the video above, I am also reading that news flash about US B-1 bombers flying over S. Korea.

    In addition, I recall that he had just talked to the leaders in legislature;

once again, we see a demonstration of PBO multi-tasking and looking very calm doing it.

as for N. Korea’s lil’ kim, he must not have learned that when PBO appears silent about a misbehaving domestic or foreign scumbag, it may be a signal that the scumbag in question is about to be stung

Hi Meta, every time we hit the zipcode in the Berkeley/Oakland area via that Hillary’s website, we get San Francisco:

    Billy C.

1001 Van Ness Avenue, 4th Floor
    San Francisco, CA
    10.1mi away

Calling his phone goes right to voicemail. I wanted to ask Billy why there isn’t an office in Oakland.

Good morning TOD. Looking forward to seeing PBO on the trail in Philly today. Not sure how much more of this campaign I can take. I turned off Rachel last night as she piled on. Thank god for Lawrence, who excoriated the media in his A block. It was a thing of beauty.

We knew this was going to be bad but the misogyny of Trump has made it so much worse. And the media appears to have thrown up its hands in doing anything other repeating his lies. Following is a comment from Washington Monthly. Not sure how I stumbled on it as I usually don’t read comments but it sooo resonated with me. This entire campaign is an effort to eliminate all the gains that women of my age and generation fought for throughout our lives.

I’m so tired of this election. And certainly Clinton must be.

For her, it’s a non-stop pummeling of the most vicious sort. Endless, contradictory criticism, unprecedented, openly crude, openly threatening political chants; bitch, witch, evil, murderer, jail her, hang her, kill her, put a stake through her, she deserves a firing squad, when this is over she’s going to jail. With never a note more positive than she may not be as corrupt as she looks — but how she looks, physically, metaphorically, in the imaginations of the media and their audience, as well as her opponent’s supporters, is more than enough to disqualify her, to condemn her, to destroy her. Not just as a politician, but as a human being — as a woman, as a wife as a mother, as a public servant. And no matter how much communication — the endless policy plans released to the press, decades of financial details released on the internet, thousands and thousands and thousands of emails released (not destroyed like her predecessors’), the policy speeches, interview after interview after interview, meetings, public events, debates and public grilling and inquisition, a record in which nothing is secret, everything has been investigated — they claim that she is secretive, withholding, they find her unknowable, she doesn’t reveal herself, WE don’t know her (don’t want to know her, just want what we’ve always known).

And a lot of the ugly narrative comes from or is echoed by her own ā€œside.ā€ Adding the grief of betrayal to wounds of attack.

Women my age don’t find her mysterious at all. We do know who she is — and we either approve, or we don’t.

If we don’t, we just want her to sit down, shut up, go away, put a lid on it and not, for gawd sakes, rock the boat.

If we do, we feel like strangers in our own country. The flood of hate feels personal — intended to wash away our accomplishments, mock our desire for respect, dissolve the truth of our individuality and worth. Maybe we can never be more than endlessly watched — criticized for not conforming to whatever the watcher is looking for — yet never seen. Maybe that’s what it means to be an American. To be a woman in America.

Like other Clinton supporters, I’ve marveled at her stamina. But this IS meant to kill her. To eliminate her. To finally shut her up.

Can anyone really stand up to it? Can you really just let it roll off your back without consequence?

Maybe Trump is the truth about us — not only who we are, but all we want to be.”

YOUR LAST LINE IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT…SINCE PBO ENTERED THE OVAL OFFIICE..A TRUE AND JUST LIGHT HAS BEEN SHINING ON THE UGLINESS IN AMERICA………..WE BUILT THIS COUNTRY ON STOLEN LAND TO BEGIN WITH AND WE ARE STILL STEALING IIT FROM NATIVE AMERICANS. YOU CANNOT BUILD ON SAND…SOONER OR LATER IT WILL CATCH UP AND TRUTH WILL FIND YOU. WE ARE GETTING WHAT WE DESERVE BECAUSE GOD IS ANGRY AND FRANKLY..IT’S JUST BEGINNING! WE HAVE NEVER REPENTED FOR SLAVERY WHICH STILL EXISTS VERY MUCH IN THIS COUNTRY IN DIFFERENT FORMS..INDEED..THE INVIISIBLE SHACKLES ARE STILL AT WORK ALONG WITH GREED,HATRED,SELF CONSUMPTION AND VIOLENCE…GOD IS NOT AT ALL HAPPY WITH NOT ONLY AMERICA..THE REST OF THE WORLD DOESN’T STACK UP EITHER!

Well, Firefox, PBO said that Hillary “never, ever, ever gives up” and I believe him. He will be out on the campaign trail for her today and giving her his absolute support. I honestly feel that we should take his word and model his behavior, which means never, ever giving up ourselves.

The media wants to try to tell us that Trump is speaking to people who feel left out, who feel Washington or anywhere isn’t working for them. To that I say bullshit. If you think someone like Trump will make things work for you, you are idiots. These same people complaining about things not working for them, will keep re-electing those same Senators and Congress people over and over and over.

Good morning everyone. I admire Hillary more every day, the way she stands up to all the bile. I remember from the 90s,when she was excoriated for staying with Bill, when she had to go to Ken Starr’s committee to testify. The essay up above clearly outlines what thinking women feel about Hillary. We do know her, and we do understand her, and we have been treated in similar ways. She is constantly in my prayers.

Also, Nerdywonka, I’m thinking we should call you Nerdywonderful. That’s what you’ve been and are. Every morning I know I can come here and learn and be uplifted. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Nate Silver gives GOP donors a closed-door presentation
    By Jonathan Swan
    September 12, 2016, 03:04 pm

Nate Silver, the ESPN journalist behind the FiveThirtyEight website, gave a presentation on the 2016 battleground map to a group of powerful Republican donors in Manhattan last week.

Silver was paid to give the presentation by the American Opportunity Alliance, a group led by some of the biggest GOP donors in the country, including hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer and the Ricketts family, which owns the Chicago Cubs.

Silver’s closed-door session was part of a two-day confab, held Sept. 7–8 at Le Bernardin Prive, a private dining room inside a New York City restaurant run by celebrity chef Eric Ripert.

Upward of three dozen top donors attended the gathering, along with senior Republican Party officials and strategists. Silver’s presentation on Wednesday afternoon was a highlight of the two-day event, people at the event said.

Ta-Nehisi Coates takes on the response of some in the media to Hillary Clinton’s ā€œbasket of deplorables.ā€

…what they [journalists] have yet to come to grips with is that Donald Trump is a democratic phenomenon, and that there are actual people – not trolls under a bridge – whom he, and his prejudices against Latinos, Muslims, and blacks, represent.

I do not believe that journalists are so powerful as to disabuse this group of their beliefs. But there is something to be said for not contributing to an opportunistic ignorance. For much of this campaign journalists have attacked Hillary Clinton for being evasive and avoiding hard questioning from their ranks. And then the second Clinton is forthright and says something revealing, she is attacked – not for the substance of what she’s said – but simply for having said it. This hypocrisy carries a chilling implicit message: Lie to me. Lie to the country. Lie to everyone. This weekend was not just another misanalysis, it was a shocking betrayal of the journalistic mission which should urge the revelation of truth as opposed to the propagation of hot takes, Washington jargon, and politics-speak…

The safe space for the act of being white endures today. This weekend, the media, an ostensibly great American institution, saw it challenged and – not for the first time – organized to preserve it. For speaking a truth, backed up by data, Clinton was accused of promoting bigotry. No. The true crime was endangering white consciousness. So it was when the president asserted that it was stupid to arrest a man for breaking into his own home. So it was when the president said that if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon Martin. And so it is when reformers suggest police not stop citizens on so flimsy a pretext as furtive movements. The need to be white is a sensitive matter – one which our institutions are inexorably and mindlessly bound to protect.

    From our President:

Today the Obama Administration announced a proposed rule that would protect basic health care for more than 4 million people by once again making it clear that politically motivated efforts to block women from accessing care at Planned Parenthood and other providers violate federal law…

The proposed rule would reinforce existing protections in the Title X family planning program that prohibit states from excluding Planned Parenthood and other women’s health providers for reasons unrelated to their ability to provide critical Title X services effectively. The Obama Administration’s proposed rule makes it clear that it is against the law for states to prevent low-income women from accessing preventive health care through the Title X program at Planned Parenthood or other women’s health centers on the basis that they also provide abortion.
