Laura Bassett: Obama Moves To Protect Planned Parenthood Funding, Permanently

The Obama administration has proposed a new rule that would prevent states from defunding Planned Parenthood or any other family planning provider for political reasons. The new rule which the Department of Health and Human Services proposed last week, says that states cannot withhold Title X federal family planning money from certain recipients for any reason other than the “provider’s ability to deliver services to program beneficiaries in an effective manner.” That means states can no longer vote to defund Planned Parenthood because some of its clinics offer abortion services.

“This will make a real difference in so many people’s lives,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood. “Thanks to the Obama administration, women will still be able to access the birth control they need to plan their families, and the cancer screenings they need to stay healthy.” The Title X program provides basic preventive health care and family planning services for 4 million low-income Americans. About 85 percent of patients who use Title X have incomes below $23,500. Planned Parenthood serves about a third of those patients, using the $70 million a year it receives in Title X grants to subsidize contraceptives and cancer and sexually transmitted infection screenings for people who can’t afford them.

Gm, TS, hope you are enjoying good weather today! 🙂 I for one am not planning to miss PBO as I’m pretty sure (please God) that I’ll be keeping an eye and ear on his ‘next steps’. No way talent like his, and Michelle’s, will be completely dimmed. At least I cannot imagine that happening in this age of rampant social media, even if the MSM tries to ignore his accomplishments as they have often done.

Ahhhh - don’t mention the MSM - I just read about the Toad & his useless stupid remark about “over prepared”. What PBO showed the world, you can never be “over prepared” for the job of President.

I know he will be around, but I have little doubt the US media will try so very hard to ignore him. Maybe he can be SoS for Hillary🙂

On the weather front - lovely sunny day - summer is going to be very warm.

😀 Somewhat funny-sad to hear you talking about what summer ‘is going to be’ when I’ve already had my first day of fall and am being forced to start thinking of the cold. Actually had to get out my blanket this morning as last night was a bit chilly.

Since The Arizona Republic began publication in 1890, we have never endorsed a Democrat over a Republican for president. Never. This reflects a deep philosophical appreciation for conservative ideals and Republican principles.

    This year is different.

The 2016 Republican candidate is not conservative and he is not qualified.

That’s why, for the first time in our history, The Arizona Republic will support a Democrat for president.

It would be such a gift to the country if after the election Trump found himself in jail for tax fraud.

Trump directed $2.3 million owed to him to his tax-exempt foundation instead
By David A. Fahrenthold September 26 at 4:40 PM

Donald Trump’s charitable foundation has received approximately $2.3 million from companies that owed money to Trump or one of his businesses but were instructed to pay Trump’s tax-exempt foundation instead, according to people familiar with the transactions.

In cases where he diverted his own income to his foundation, tax experts said, Trump would still likely be required to pay taxes on the income. Trump has refused to release his personal tax returns. His campaign said he paid income tax on one of the donations, but did not respond to questions about the others.

That gift was a $400,000 payment from Comedy Central, which owed Trump an appearance fee for his 2011 “roast.”

Then there were payments totaling nearly $1.9 million from a man in New York City who sells sought-after tickets and one-of-a-kind experiences to wealthy clients.

Serena Williams vows: ‘I won’t be silent’ on police violence.

In Tuesday’s Facebook post, Williams, 35, wrote that she had asked her 18-year-old nephew to drive her somewhere so she could work during the journey.

She said that when she saw a police car she “remembered that horrible video of the woman in the car when a cop shot her boyfriend”. “All of this went through my mind in a matter of seconds,” she added.

Williams was apparently referring to the 6 July fatal shooting of Philando Castile, whose girlfriend live-streamed the confrontation with police in St Paul, Minnesota.

The Grand Slam champ said she checked her nephew was not speeding so they would not get pulled over, and then regretted not having driven herself.

“I would never forgive myself if something happened to my nephew,” Williams wrote. “He’s so innocent. So were all ‘the others.'”

“I am a total believer that not ‘everyone’ is bad It is just the ones that are ignorant, afraid, uneducated, and insensitive that is affecting millions and millions of lives.”

Williams quoted Martin Luther King Jr, writing: “There comes a time when silence is betrayal.”

She added: “I Won’t Be Silent”.

The blocking of these registrations in 2014 election changed the course of the election in favor of the GOP governor and senate candidate. I remember when it happened. Now that it has been reinstated hopefully those 50k voters will have a chance to vote down the GOP.

I remember as well, Bill R…how thousands of registrations were “misplaced” and did not get processed…that the onus was on the registrant to follow up…something individuals do not expect to have to do.

Now that they are registered, my hope is that they WILL get out to vote AND, as you’ve said, vote down the GOP.

    Gooooooooood Morning…TOD…

i decided to go to a Hillary Watch party with democrats from my community and ans i am glad that i did…besides gathering strength from the enthusiasm of the folks there…it was encouraging to see The Donald/Hillary on the split screen…anyone of good faith who watched the debate can no longer say that the two parties are the same…

So i am feeling pretty good about Hillary’s chances…my concern is for the rest of the ticket here in PA…the Senate…and the state offices are not guarantees….as Jackie G said a few days ago…the larger the the Hillary win in PA the more chance for McGinty to win…folks do not know much about McGinty….and the ads that DSSC are running do not talk about Toomey as an obstructionist …they do not mention SCOTUS…sigh…sometimes i wonder about the think tank behind these ads….

so it is up to us to remind voters about WHO Toomey is and that if we do not regain the Senate…it will be worse for Hillary than it was for the President…because Congress will remain dysfunctional..and now SCOTUS will be dysfunctional as well…

      September 28, 2025 at 9:15 am

Pf, I,too, am concerned with down ticket races in PA. A recent David Plouffe analysis said that Hillary’s great strength is in the East/Southeast of the state. If she comes out of that area with 500,000 votes, she will overcome any problems in the western hinterland of the state. If she gets more than that-especially if there’s massive turnout in Phillie-she will have strong coattails. So, it’s all going to come down to GOTV and turnout. That’s why you’re seeing so many visits to Philadelphia from HRC campaign surrogates.

      • 110 prettyfoot58
        September 28, 2025 at 10:35 am

        thanks for the analysis…

i think that focus of the DSSC if off …as usual…there should be focus on Toomey being an agent of obstruction…of taking back the Senate….of the necessity of moving the “progressive” agenda forward…which will not happen if we do not take back the Senate and make inroads in the House….in addition to making changes in the state houses….at each election….this is what we must see….and build on

when i have hseaer McGinty…that is where she stands….becasue folks do not know her….so we are just going with her because she has a D after her name….which is sometimes a necessary strategy…so i am encouraging folks to push the D lever….
