Cute story about the pumpkin stop. Michelle was lifting those 70lb. pumpkins by herself! She’s strong. Some cute dialog too.
http://www.wvec.com/my-city/hampton/SLIDESHOW-Obamas-visit-Hampton-132160263.html
Thanks for the link dotster. I especially loved this segment of the article. They’re both so delightfully cute.
The president and first lady spent about 20 minutes inspecting pumpkins and other goods, such as fruit, jams, and honey. Billy Wood informed the president that there were eight varieties of sweet potatoes. “You know, Michelle does a good job or promoting produce,” replied Obama. “She tries to get everyone to eat their vegetables.
Reporters said the president had a long conversation with the market owners while Mrs. Obama was busy inspecting pumpkins. She was very interested in oversized white-colored ones, which Betty Wood said were called “full moon pumpkins.”
The first lady picked one up by wrapping both arms around it and loading it onto a metal cart. Mrs. Wood said the pumpkins weight 70 pounds.
The president said “Don’t hurt yourself now,” and asked an aide about putting the pumpkin on the back of the bus.
Mrs. Obama loaded another pumpkin onto the cart and the president asked, “How many are you going to buy? You want anything else?” The first lady replied, “No we’ll have enough trouble getting these back.”
Mrs. Obama said the white pumpkins from Hampton would be placed outside in front of the White House. “That’s what the First Lady says, and I listen,” said the president.
After selecting their items, the president paid for the items at the register, totalling $60.74. He got change back from 80 dollars.
Their purchases included 6 orange pumpkins and two huge white pumpkins, two red apples, a bag of peanuts, and a jar of honey.
The president posed for photos with the Woods and promised to send pictures of the pumpkins at the White House.
Obama wheeled the cartload of pumpkins to the bus himself. As the group was getting in position for photos, he cautioned those nearby, “Don’t let me roll it over your toes.”
Wow Chips. You are on the ball. No one and I mean no one gets the latest news, articles, pictures, and videos faster than you. It’s freaking unbelievable. Thanks. :D
I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve been getting a distinct impression that if/when Romney becomes the nominee, we will have to fight harder than ever because it just seems to me, that too many in the lib blogosphere are more than willing to fight the crazies, but it just seems that with Romney, I’m hearing way too many “at least if Romney wins, it wouldn’t be as bad as…” which to me doesn’t really seem like a fighting spirit. IDK, it just seems to me like some of them really don’t care if Romney wins are not. Which pissed me off, because I think Romney would be just as much a disaster as any of the Repub candidates.
So, Just wanted to say that I’m glad for sites like your TOD and others that are ready and willing to fight back against GOP/Repubs and not just the crazy ones. When I say not just the crazy ones, I mean that you guys fight for POTUS and the Obama administration against ALL factions of the GOP. I glad for Axelrod, Pluoffe, Gibbs and Jay Carney who have no qualms about having POTUS back against anyone, be it moderate, conservative or plain crazy repub.
Oh we will absolutely have to fight lamh31. I’ve also heard rumblings from some liberal blogs and other people that oh well Romney wouldn’t be bad; at least he’s a moderate. I make sure to disabuse them of that mistaken assumption. He is no moderate. He lacks a core, he’s wishy washy, and he’s a flip-flopper to boot. Those aren’t characteristics of a moderate nor of a leader. He chooses the most advantageous positon of the day. If he deems it fit to cater to the extremes and nutjobs then he does that. His plans are extremely right wing. He wants to privatize Medicare and Social Security, and he wants to get rid of Medicaid and hand the reigns to the states. He advocates deregulation of WallStreet. He flip flops from being pro-choice to pro-life, pro-civil unions to anti- LGBT rights. He would comfortably repeal Healthcare reform and comfortably reinstate DADT. He would order his Attorney General to defend DOMA in the courts, and he would appoint radical right wing justices to the Supreme Court. His national policy advisors are cronies from the GWB administration; all chock full of neo-cons. He appointed Bork as one of his advisors. Bork is a man who advocated taking away civil rights from minorities and women. So Romney is in no way a moderate and we will make sure to fight the GOP with everything we’ve got and win another term for President Obama. A 21st century leader.
Yes indeed Romney is very conservative. But most of all, this man has no courage, no strenght of character. He would be the total puppet of the most sinister forces in America. Moreover, I don’t think he’s a very hard worker. He’s not very knowledgeable nor very brilliant. Beyond knowing about business, what are his stranghts ? He’s just very slick and is good at parroting talking points. No real sense of history, no profound comprehension of other cultures. A very superficial understanding of the realities of ordinary americans. No wisdom, no empathy.
He would be a mediocre president and a dangerous one. Every bit as bad as Bush Jr.
So O’Reiley &/ his agents buy up the books and send them to the troops to look all patriot-y (as opposed to patriotic;) ), without attempting to send something the troops might really want or need? Of course, the volume of ‘sales’ gets the book on the best seller lists so they can put ‘best selling author’ on the next bit of drivel they publish (Remember the Alaska Barbie buying up hers and sending them to donors as a ‘thank you’). Meanwhile, some aspiring writer, with no contacts or money, who really has something to contribute to the public sphere, struggles to get her/his work noticed. While they were in Hampton and the Hampton Roads area, is here any word on whether they might have toured Fort Monroe, VA? The fort which has recently been deconmissioned is the birthplace of my husband and his 5 siblings. In fact, their mother and father met there at a dance (he being a new officer on base and she being he daughter of an officer stationed there). The Fort is on tap to be declared a national monument and I really hope our President takes a good look at it and decides to do so (it is in his power and authority to do so). It is a beautiful and special place and historically significant. This fort never fell to the Confederacy during the Civil War and Jefferson was imprisoned there after the War.
I read that there was a big push for this during the president’s visit, everyone wearing green to show their support—-and holding up signs along his route etc. Hopefully, this will become reality.
Daisydem….send your thoughts to the President through Whitehouse.gov……I’m sure he would appreciate hearing your story and your personal connection to the issue. Can’t hurt.
Forgive me if this has been posted but it was too good to pass up sharing it with TOD

A low progressive turnout in 2010 got us into this mess. We can’t let that happen again
{Snip}
Progressives, out of a mixture of political correctness and embarrassment, carefully avoid the subject. The Republicans are delighted at the silence, because it masks what should be fatal weaknesses in their own position.
It may not be pleasant to hear, but a massive Democratic voter cop-out in last year’s elections is what put the reactionary right in the driver’s seat, creating the disastrous logjam in Congress, and bringing to a dead halt the hyperactive first two years of the Obama administration.
I wish the repeated Al Sharpton’s PoliticNation show. I see LOD and RM three time in the evening and CM at 11:00 PT.
I usually miss LOD first half of his show by the time I get home. But I’m able to get the first half after Ed. If that schedule does the same thing, I’ll miss the first half of Ed’s show and catch all of LOD when it comes one. Well, there’s always DVRing it.
I wish they repeated Al Sharpton’s PoliticNation show around the same time as LOD & Maddow.
Don’t like it. I can’t take a whole lot of Ed, and I’m more apt to watch at that time than later, LOD more tolerable. What I wish is that Martin Bashir would move into the prime time lineup. He’s smarter and more entertaining than any of them and has one of the best shows on right now, and he’s not afraid to go after anyone and anything and exposes truths no one else is bothering to mention. Which means he’ll probably be gone soon.
I was listening to Ed on his radio show the other day and dismayed to hear him agree with a caller who was spouting off on why PBO should not be re-elected. Ed agreed with the caller just when I thought he was back in PBO’s corner. I know Ed was lamblasted awhile back when we all called and complained about his attitude of not being supportive of PBO and not telling all of the truth. Ed then seemed to make references to the complaints and be more vocally supportive so I was really put off by his agreement of this caller to his show. I assume his support of the Unions and the OWS movement has gotten him more attention so better ratings and moved him to a better time slot.
Hey, I was in Hampton today with the President and First Lady! I got a big hug from him backstage! I’m still on cloud 9! Michelle is an awesome speaker. She said they hadn’t seen each other in 3 days. She introduced him and he lauded all that she and Jill Biden were doing for military families. He looked at her and said, and she’s cute too. She was so embarrassed! They’re both so amazing. I don’t know what we did to deserve them. Oh yeah, the military audience went wild! I was so relieved to see that!
You are one lucky ducky!! I remember when I went to the Inaugeration then to an Inaugural Ball afterwards that was a gift from my daughter. We found out that was one of the balls the Obama’s did not attend. I had to have my photo taken with the lifesize poster instead. Boo Hoo. I am happy for you though. Congrats!!
I think Ed Schultz should be moved to 3:00 a.m. in the morning. I really can’t stand him. I can’t get to the remote fast enough after Rachel signs off now. I think this is a cleaver ruse on their part to try and bolster Ed’s ratings. It won’t work with me.
I will continue to watch Rev Al at 6:00 p.m. and Rachel and Lawrence as long as they are focusing on the obstruction and intransigence of the GOP and not bashing President Obama. I have my moments with both of them.
The other thing I want to know is WHY OH WHY does “Tweety” need to be broadcast TWICE IN ONE EVENING (5:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.)? I would love to see the 7:00 p.m. slot go to Melissa Harris Perry, but I think she is enjoying teaching and living in Louisiana. I just think two Tweety’s is two too many. I watch Criminal Minds reruns when Tweety is on at 7:00 o.m. His political analysis could make you dizzy.
TOTALLY agree about Tweety. I don’t know if this has anything to do with the change, but I wondered if LO would prefer the 10:00 since he lives in CA and mostly does his show from there. I think I am right about that?? Anyway, he may have wanted the later time. Who knows?
I wonder if they are switching to match “Current TV”. Maybe people watch KO instead of LOD and maybe ED has a larger audience than LOD so they’ll stay with his time slot. Just guessing.

Haha. This is just too funny for words. Must tweet. I’ll also check if the Billo the Clown/Pinhead has a twitter account.
That is a great story. I don’t condone book burning but that is appropriate.

Heads up guys.
MSNBC changing their primetime lineup.
http://www.mediaite.com/tv/lawrence-odonnell-booted-to-10-p-m-ed-schultz-moves-up-to-800/
Ed Schultz moves to 8pm EST, Rachel stays at 9pm EST, and Lawrence O moves to 10pmEST.
What do ya’ll think of altered lineup?

Wow Pat Congrats on getting that hug from the President. I know you will probably be floating for days!!!
Lucky you! How fun! And it is true that we are fortunate that these high quality people live in the WH.
Congratulations Pat, thrilled for ya!
Pat, one of my dreams is to get one of those President Obama hugs. Lucky you.
