NYT: For the first time in many years, manufacturing stands out as an area of strength in the American economy.
When the Labor Department reports December employment numbers on Friday, it is expected that manufacturing companies will have added jobs in two consecutive years. Until last year, there had not been a single year when manufacturing employment rose since 1997.

David Rothkopf (Foreign Policy): …. the Obama track record on many fronts is much better than the administration gives itself credit for. They could be doing much, much more to tout what is an impressive litany of successes.
While the list of those successes is long and compelling-defeating Bin Laden, getting out of Iraq, helping to oust Qaddafi, restoring our reputation internationally, resetting our international priorities to better coincide with our long term interests (the “pivot” to a focus on Asia), producing meaningful healthcare reform, producing significant financial services reforms, stopping the downward spiral in the economy and laying the foundations of recovery, etc. - let me focus on three areas that deserve much more attention and appreciation ….. ** See article **
…. the president is actually doing remarkably well in the world’s toughest job right now, and he is and has been doing so under truly extraordinarily adverse circumstances. Jonathan Cohn: Should President Obama use the recess appointment power when Republicans in Congress refuse even to consider his nominees? You better believe it.
Not only are Republicans blocking Obama’s nominations at a record rate. They are doing so in order to impose their own ideological agenda and, in some cases, to undermine duly passed laws they don’t like but can’t repeal.
That’s a modern-day form of nullification … Obama would be derelict in his duties if he did not use every inch of executive branch authority to overcome it.
…. based on a series of conversations today, I think Obama was within his rights after all.

Good Evening, Chips
Looking forward to PBO greeting the Consumer Bureau staff tomorrow. Woot!
Absolutely brilliant move. After watching Director Richard Cordray today, I can’t wait to see this tomorrow. Another flawless roll out of an important initiative.
I could not agree more:) Wonderful!
Great jobs news — why do these job creators hate America? Don’t they know they’re not supposed to hire while PBO is President?!?!?
Chips,
just wanted to thank you again for TOD. I come here several times a day to find the good news. I smiled at POTUS’ visit with the Easons, because they remind me of so many elders who didn’t live long enough to see Barack Obama be elected President. Mr. and Mrs. Eason easily could be some of the church elders from my life- good people who didn’t deserve to be preyed upon by those vultures.
Thank YOU rikyrah!
First? Possible!
I have to say, I have been LMAO about Santorum’s lame excuse about saying that be never said Black People…but Blah people. Seriously? This is what Angry Blah Lady had to say about this:
So we’ve got Newt telling blahs to get a job, and Frothman lying about whether he made comments about blah people being on welfare, and all of it makes me feel pretty BLARGH. I mean, come on! It’s far too early for this kind of dumbassery! Pace yourselves, people. Don’t let all the stupid out before you hit the primary.
And by the way, where do these mythical blah people come from? Blahfrica? The Blah Sea? And does that make me Angry Blah Lady now? Suddenly I’m filled with crushing ennui.
The stupid…it burns!
Eschew ennui, ABL!
I missed that earlier…no way!!! That’s what he said? Blah people?? Oh come on, I heard him, we all heard him, it’s on tape!…what a crazy liar!
Beautiful. ABL really turns a phrase like nobody else. Love her.
She so funny! Angry Beautiful Black Lady!
Guess not but I tried.
You’re ALWAYS first with us smilingl8dy!
I read somewhere that the specific length of the recess needed is not spelled out in the law and I think there was a court case and the courst specifically did not define the length of recess needed. Plus by waiting until after the second session started, Mr. Cordray will be able to stay on another year. Sorry, I’m not sure where I read it so I can’t post a link.
http://www.thepeoplesview.net/2012/01/fightin-mood-obama-calls-gop-bluff.html There you go, ML!
Thanks! I’ll bookmark it!
Welcome!
Florida poll, says nearly half says Republicans sabotaged the economy to hurt Obama, just half. It should be 99.9%. When Mitch McConnell says that his main goal was to make Obama a one term President, that said it all right there.
Oh, it’s 99.9 - but only 50 percent will admit to it. The others are in denial, or they like it that way.
If they only watch Fox and listen to RW radio….it’s understandable….but half is not bad!
actually its darn good. Florida is a puple state and represents the diversity of America and the election season is just about to ramp up. Those numbers will rise as more truths come out. If the Rethugs fight these nominations they will be casting themselves in a much more negative light as far as the general public is concerned. PBO is on the winning side of most domestic issues important to the American people. We just have work through the wave of hate and racism to get him re-elected. I am confident that will happen.
Still fired up and ready to go! When the steady growth/recovery of the economy I think of the tortoise and the hare: the tortoise won the race. President Obama is the exemplar of the I Ching wisdom that perseverance furthers!
You are so right, Tracy!
Hahaha. So true.
Oh, what a great video. He really is the sweetest man.
I think in the next 5 years I am going to have to pop a baby out just so I can get PBO to hold and kiss him/her. My Mama can’t get me to have kids but President Obama can, lmao. Just playing!!
All my babies are young adults now but I think I may pop one more out just for that thrill!!!!
IKR!! LOL!
If he were coming to my neighborhood, I’d run out and grab the nearest baby!
Totally worth doing federal time! (As long as they let me keep the pictures - I’ll happily give the baby back!)
You have me weeping here ML!!! I promise, I’ll visit you (and your photos) in prison
Even more reason!
For PBO or the baby making process…..naughty mat time.
There’s a whole lotta naughty mat love going on here Yardarm:
I will forever visualize you as Popeye
That’s okay as long as you give Olive some meat ‘n potatoes. It gets cold in Chicago.
So, you’re a:
You bet your Bippy.. Nothing wants a bone but a dog! And me likes gravy on me spuds!
Okay, okay. i’m taking my naughty mat and going to the “time-out” corner.
LMAO!!! Y’all are toooooooooooooooo funny!!!!
OMG - I almost shot tortilla chips out my nostrils.
If it’s not the cutest baby ever! Oh my, he’s adorable……
Hello Ms. Chips,
I love the president with the babies and that adorable couple thank you so much for the updates, pics, videos and just all the pleasantness …Take care
President Obama is going to pound the CFPB in this election all the way to victory. The more the GOP fight him on this, the better for us. WOOT!!!!
Of course. It ties in directly with him championing for the middle and working classes. It goes right along with the AJA and tax hikes for the rich, unemployment insurance.
Any information from Obama campaign or others on Q4 fund raising ?
By January 15th!
No leaks/hints/tips before that ?
They said over 60 million!
Any linky ?
Ron Paul raised $13M, Newt has claimed he raised $9.5M, Romney folks said they had their best quarter ever - I believe his previous best was $18M so he beat that mark. Pres Obama campaign released a (combined with DNC) goal of $60M and they make sure to never come up short so we can expect at least that I could venture to guess.
Hope they reached that goal of 60 mil. They usually leak this info about a week or two in advance of the filing deadline.
Filing deadline was NYE though, and Pres Obama couldn’t do any last minute big fundraisers being in Hawaii the last week of 2011, and bogged down in tax holiday extensions before that.
Ha—-Bo’s New Year’s Resolution: “a better work/life balance”, as he was sprawled out on the lawn playing with a ball. And—Jon Bon Jovi was in the house!
I can’t stand Bon Jovi’s music (sorry) but now I like the man a little more
Please Bon Jovi is a good gay, he is a Democrat, I well come his support for the president, and
yes I welcome President Clinton Help to president Obama!!!
I’m sorry did you mean good guy or good gay? Either way yes Bon Jovi’s is an excellent activist.
Mel, I loved President Clinton while he was in office. But my opinion of him changed during the 2008 primaries. He has done nothing to regain my trust after his racial diatribes during that contest. There is a reason why he is nicknamed “Slick Willy”. I don’t believe he has PBO’s best interest at heart. Its all about Bill. Narcicist to the MAX.
http://www.jbjsoulkitchen.org/ OMC….I hope you read this. You may not like his music, but you must certainly be able to appreciate what a fine, caring, engaged man he is. This was his and his wife’s brainchild….a great lesson of care and giving for all of us to emulate. Bravo to both of them!
He was good in the We Are One concert.
Love it, Chips. Our First Dog is looking great. What a lovely gift to our First Family. Everytime I see Bo, I think of Sen. Ted Kennedy. Smiles to our hearts. Miss him so.HZ
As the saying goes, the worm has turned. That Florida poll is very intriguing. Remeber thsi si a purple state, and to have 50% say that and we really aren’t into th elction season yet, is very telling. In fact, although this is a meme the Dems may want to see spread, they are going at it in a very smart way. They are really just edging up to the line of making the accusation, saying things like”You have it wonder if…” and”It almosts seems as if…” and actually letting people draw their own conclusions. And it is obvious what conclusions are being drawn.
And if you think the President is putting on th pressure now, jut wait until the weather heats up. You ain’t seen nothing yet. I am confident he wins, baring an absolut disaster with the economy. Evn if it stays right where it is, he doesn’t lose. Don’t get me wrong, I am not complacent and we all have work to do, but I am confident.
#CLT is Charlotte, right?
Yeah. I had to look that up as well.

Cordray gets to work
By Steve Benen
Now that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has a director, it can get to work on some long-overdue priorities. For America’s middle class, that’s terrific news.
The new director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on Thursday outlined a vigorous oversight and enforcement agenda, saying that companies that take unfair advantage of consumers of financial products will face “real consequences.”
The director, Richard Cordray, who was appointed to the post Wednesday by President Obama, encouraged consumers to contact the agency with their stories and complaints about banks, payday lenders and other financial institutions that they feel have sold deceptive products or engaged in abusive behavior.
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal/2012_01/cordray_gets_to_work034550.php
Jon Huntsman was endorsed for president by The Boston Globe on Thursday.
The endorsement comes just five days before the New Hampshire caucus and is a well-received coup for a campaign that’s struggled to win endorsements and backings of major national or regional newspapers or political icons.
But perhaps the bigger news is that the Boston paper opted not to support Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and the Republican primary race’s front-runner.
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/202673-romneys-hometown-paper-endorses-huntsman
Ooops!
And the endorsement will only hurt Romney in that he and Huntsman are after the same voters - Folks who are leaning or voting for Santorum, Gingrich, Perry or Paul will not have Huntsman as their second choice. But I have to imagine most Romney voters would see Huntsman as their second choice.
On the other hand, Huntsman’s numbers have gone DOWN in the last poll. Probably people are realizing that Huntsman doesn’t have any chance.
I hope Huntsman gets out after NH. I’ll leave it at that.
Why is the Boston Globe endorsement a big deal for the NH primary?
NH relies on Boston for many things and the Boston newspapers and media markets overlap significantly with NH.
God! I still have to fix this screwed up login? Let’s try this again. I’m breaking rules by not sticking with the correct name. I don’t want to be a naughty girl (at least in this regard).
Boston is the capitol of New England.
Correction: endorsed for the Republican nomination, not President. I believe I’m correct in this.
Weepin’!!!!!!!
Hilarious. Freudian slip …
Methinks it might appear in ad or two!
I just saw it, Chips, thanks! I was thinking that too..and I told my son about it and he said “Freudian Slip”, too! I didn’t stick around to hear the booing..what an endorsement mittoinette kochead got!
As they say: You can’t make this sh*t up. Hilarous!
I’ve watched this 4 times and am still LMAO. Best thing Romney ever got….that endorsement from Gramps!!
:X Dead :X Good ol John
To be honest, I almost feel sorry for John McCain. I’ve always been taught to respect the elderly, especially when they’re at that age where they start losing it. But I just can’t feel sorry for him. He’s too much of a lying, flipflopping, hypocrite — just like Mitt.
YA GOTTA LOVE GRAMPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As Stephanie Miller would say…”Oh granpy”
So funny! I’d say McCain was actually speaking from his heart and brain there for a second until it was pointed out to him what he had said. Man, things aren’t looking so good for Romney these days and this McCain endorsement only seems to be making it worse.
I love the panic Romney and that woman go into when they realize what’s happening. It’s like, WHAAA, WAIT.
Frankly I don’t believe this McShame comment was a mistake. He genuinly does not like Romney. He is doing a Good Ole Boy, Old Guard endorsement tour for the Republican establishment. The Rethugs really do not have a quality candidate and this is what they have been reduced to.
Spot on Keith. Any of the reports I read today on the Romney/McCain appearance yesterday described it as excruciatingly awkward and, at times, embarrassing. McCain absolutely loathes Romney….
…. but this is what the GOP is reduced to, their ‘elders’ endorsing a guy they can’t abide. The hilarious part of it all is that the Romney people thought it was a good thing to have McCain’s endorsement, despite the fact that there are SO many videos out there of McCain skewering Romney. They’re just making it too easy for the Obama/Biden 2012 ad makers!
Exactly Chips. Camp Obama must be salivating at the smorgageboard of opportunities they have to EXPOSE this fraud. We just need the funds to do it. I donated again to OFA before the 4 quarter deadline.
“smorgageboard of opportunities”
Me likes!!
His caregiver must have slipped up on the meds again, tho some of these old codgers are very non-compliant!
But I liked the way they were all nodding and saying Yeah Yeah Yeah, until it dawned on them, like meta said, and they started to wet themselves wondering how to shut him up! Slid downhill fast after that! Hee!
The top reasons Wall Street and Republicans are scared of Richard Cordray
By Linette Lopez
After months of pushback from Republicans in Congress, President Obama has finally decided to go over their heads and appoint former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau without them.
…………………….
We’ve written a lot about him at Business Insider. Partly because, no matter what side of the aisle you’re on, there’s no denying he’s incredibly impressive. Cordray is an undefeated, five-time Jeopardy! champion (he won $45,303), has a masters in economics from Oxford University, and was also editor-in-chief of the University of Chicago Law Review.
………………………………
So what’s the problem with Cordray? There are two, one is an old Washington problem, and the other is purely Wall Street’s:
1.Republicans said they would never support anyone to head the CFPB — Period —that is, unless the White House made serious changes to the agency. (Politico)
2.He doesn’t just go after Wall Street Institutions. He goes after individual executives as well.
Let’s expand on point 2 with some more examples of how Cordray fought Wall Street as Ohio AG:
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/01/05/the-top-reason-wall-street-and-republicans-are-scared-of-richard-cordray/#.TwXmy7aUvfk.wordpress
Here we go! Here we go!
Cordray’s resume’ is one of the more impressive I’ve ever read—-he was valedictorian and Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude everywhere, Oh. treasurer and AG, law clerk for Sup. Ct. Justice Kennedy etc. etc. in addition to the Oxford U. and U. of Chgo Law honors mentioned above. The Repubs know he’s qualified. They just are not fond of the existence of the agency he will head. For some strange reason. Too bad, so sad.
Impeccable credentials for the post. Something Elizabeth Warren didn’t have coming from academia. GOP could have blocked her based on lack of organizational and executive experience and arguably would have had a case in doing so. With Cordray they couldn’t even pretend he wasn’t qualified, so just admitted they were blocking him as hostage taking to try and force change of the legislation governing the CFPB.
For some strange reason? LMAO. Cmon dolster. The Rethugs are in the hip pockets for the people that this agency will be regulating. Of course they will be against it. Where do you believe a large portion of their lobbyist come from? The major financial institutions of this nation. No rocket science needed. Decades of abuse is about to get CHECKED!!
One day after President Obama appointed Richard Cordray as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau over the objections of Senate Republicans, the bureau announced the launch of a new “nonbank supervision program.”
What’s a “nonbank”? That’s the CFPB’s term for a lender that doesn’t have a bank, thrift, or credit union charter. Mortgage lenders, payday loan operations, debt collectors, and consumer reporting agencies are all considered “nonbanks.”
Millions of Americans deal with nonbanks regularly: Some 20 million consumers utilize payday loan services, while 2 million new mortgages were originated with nonbank lenders in 2010, and 14% of consumers have debt collectors after them.

The GOP’s ‘problems with the Hispanics’
By Steve Benen
John McCain talked to Chuck Todd this morning, and acknowledged his party’s “problems” with a certain constituency. (via Jenee Desmond-Harris)
For those who can’t watch clips online, Todd asked the Republican senator if the state of Arizona is “in play” in 2012. After a lengthy pause, there was this exchange:
McCain: I think that if not this election cycle, the demographics are that Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, even Texas will all be in play.
Todd: And if Republicans don’t fix the problem?
McCain: Yes, yes. We have to fix our problems with the Hispanics.
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal/2012_01/the_gops_problems_with_the_his034549.php
The GOP’s plan to “fix their problem with Hispanics” is to nominate Jeb Bush in 2016. Also as bad as they are, they seem to be electing more Latino/Latina politicians than Dems are. In 2010 Brian Sandoval was elected Gov of Nevada and Susana Martinez was elected Gov of New Mexico. Also Marco Rubio was elected to the Senate in Florida. Off the top of my head I can’t think of any fast rising Latino politicians in the Dem party other than Julian Castro and he’s in a tough state for Dems as mayor of San Antonio right now.
They were more probably elected by their base more for their rw cred than for their ethnicity.
I hope our Hispanic brothers and sisters vote their pocket book and not against their own best interest. I can’t expect them to do anything difference than any other group has done, but lets hope they do.
StR, you still believe the GOP is giving up the WH for 2012 ? I’m not so sure. The Bush gang can still control things if they put Romney in the WH. The man doesn’t have the character nor the knowledge to do the job and would be a puppet. He doesn’t begin to understand how difficult the presidency really is, I’m sure of this. The only qualifications he has is he knows how to make business deals. His understanding of national and global economics is probably not very impressive. And he’s totally clueless when it comes to foreign policy.
Is it possible that the GOP plans for 8 years of Romney and THEN push Jeb for 2020? He wouldn’t be that old…
Julian Castro is just getting started. He’s young but he’s been in the spotlight for years. I think he’s shooting for Governor one day. His twin may also be another rising star.
Ari Fleischer and bill Burton go head to head every night on CNN.

Today, police arrested former county employees Kevin Kavanaugh, who was appointed by Walker, and Tim Russell, who served on Walker’s gubernatorial campaign. The AP reports:
Former county housing director Tim Russell, 48, was charged with two felony and one misdemeanor embezzlement charges, according to the criminal complaint from the Milwaukee County district attorney’s office.
Kevin Kavanaugh, Walker’s appointee to the Milwaukee County Veteran Service Commission, was charged with one felony embezzlement charge of taking more than $10,000 from a business and four felony counts of fraudulent writings by a corporate officer.
Russell and Kavanaugh each face up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the most serious felony embezzlement charge.

Go Christie. One less Teabagger the better. Eliminate Steve King.
I am laughing my head off. Say it again, Sen. McCain. Go home and sit down in one of those nine or whatever houses you have. This is good stuff.HZ
The senile John McCain need to go give that dumb ass daughter Megan the attention she seeks.
The thing I detest about Repubs is the ease in which they lie. Megan sat in front of O’Donnell and repeatedly said how much her family liked Mitt Romney. Or maybe the word “like” doesn’t mean what I think the word “like” means.
Did you hear the mom say “you can’t take my baby!”. The president was really hanging on to that little boy
The president’s underappreciated, undersold success stories

I think the president and all his supporters are going to spend the next year making sure everyone in America hears about his successes. Up to this point, he was building up the list; now he’s ready to sell it. The president and his communications people are not naive, nor are they shrinking violets. They know when and how to make PBO’s achievements known.
I was just fine until he said “if it was Clinton”! His problem, PBO is NOT Clinton and thank God for that. There is a little undercurrent that-PBO doesnt quite know what he is doing. I am offended. PBO is the smartest man in the room and really does not need any instruction on when and/or if he should broadcast his achievements. PBO has Looooooooooooo plans that I challenge anyone to see what he is REALLY doing at any given moment. When or if the time arrives, when it fits into his plan PBO will structure his pronouncement quite well. He always has. I love it and in fact prefer his approach.
talk me off a ledge guys, I’m here at my home in Jamaica watching Americas Dumbest Criminal when an AD about repeal it now came on. It was an AD about ACA (Obamacare) and that it had 1.6 million signatures. please tell me that’s a lie and that it is a shady organization.
Lies…All lies.. It’s going to the Supreme Court which will more than likely uphold it because the appeals court upheld it.
thank you. My blood pressure just went back to normal
Never heard of it, but it doesn’t matter. Congress doesn’t have the votes to repeal it.
No problem…
It’s all a lie. There are no votes in Congress to repeai it. Even the really conservative Supreme Court will uphold it because the lower courts have upheld it. Generally, the Supremes don’t like folks wasting their time with issues that the lower courts have already dealt with.
SANTORUM MIGHT HAVE ACTUALLY WON!
http://www.kcci.com/news/30144582/detail.html#ixzz1idUftgoh
Edward True, 28, of Moulton, said he helped count the votes and jotted the results down on a piece of paper to post to his Facebook page. He said when he checked to make sure the Republican Party of Iowa got the count right, he said he was shocked to find they hadn’t.
“When Mitt Romney won Iowa by eight votes and I’ve got a 20-vote discrepancy here, that right there says Rick Santorum won Iowa,” True said. “Not Mitt Romney.”
True said at his 53-person caucus at the Garrett Memorial Library, Romney received two votes. According to the Iowa Republican Party’s website, True’s precinct cast 22 votes for Romney.
“This is huge,” True said. “It essentially changes who won.”
$10k the Iowa GOP changed the results on purpose!
WOW.
The GOP allowed no e-voting, and counted it all by hand, and they STILL CHEATED.
so not surprising.
Hope this guy make a HEEUUUGE deal of this.
If true, Iowans should be furious with this tampering and it certainly sullies Romney, the Cheater’s, reputation. This guy needs to hold a press conference and keep making noise until he’s heard. I have a deep and abiding revulsion against Santorum, but his people needs to step up to the plate on this.
I TOLD YOU!!!! All of TOD said they would buy the election. 2 - 22, what’s 20 votes?
What a scam. Plus, the Rethugs knew that the caucus wouldn’t allow recounts.
This, this, THIS RIGHT HERE, is why we have to vote in such overwhelming numbers that they can’t steal it.
Absolutely. Repubs have proven time and time again that stealing is not beneath them.
of course he did. When I read Romney won by EIGHT votes. . . c’mon now. That lying liar stole the win from Santorum.
My hope was Santorum was smart enough to contest it.
This doesn’t surprise me. I knew there was some fraud taking place somewhere. Romney spent too much money in Iowa to not have it work for him someway. I hope Mr. True and the Santorumnites don’t let this get swept under the rug.
Something Romney and others will never have and that’s natural Charisma. Even for those who don’t agree with his policies admits there’s a likability quality that the president process.
The republicans have been trying to find their next Reagan for over two decades, because even I, as a staunch democrat have to admit that he had these same qualities.
I have tried to put my fingers on just what it is that makes this president so appealing as a human being and I’ve come to the following conclusions.
It’s his laid back cool demeanor,
It’s his smile he flashes that can instantly change the demeanor of the room.
His calm demeanor when the country is facing a crisis.
His love of ALL people
His willingness to listen to those who may have a different point of view than his.
His love of family that can’t be mistaken.
His love for his wife, who he unabashedly states is his ROCK.
His love of country and it’s people.
He came to Washington “His own Man’, and he will leave “His Own Man”.
I could go on, but I will lastly say, because Barack Obama is multi-culture/race/experience, I think many of us are so endeared to him becasue I think we see him as our brother, and that’s where our fierce protection of him stems from.
I love this site and thank you Chips!
You nailed it!
Beautifully said bjw2.
I love your post, bjw.
The list of his qualities is pretty long, isn’t it ?
I think that most of all, people sense his authenticity, and they see the perfect balance of seriousness, sense of purpose and optimism.
Gorgeous bjw2, just gorgeous!
Your post is absolutely beautiful, BJW2. Our president is all of those things-he makes you feel he is a beloved family member even as he overwhelms you with his brilliance and leadership skills. I do appreciate your point about Reagan, though I never felt it. He always seemed phony to me and I had a hard time even listening to him.
bjw2. All of what you said. But there is also one thing that MUST be mentioned.
It’s more than just that smile that can change the tone of a room. President Obama is a very good looking man. He’s tall, he’s in great physical shape, he’s comfortable in his own skin. Even though, as far as I know, he never served in the military, he has gained the respect of service men and women. Plus, he looks to be in as good a shape, if not better, than most of the officers he commands.
He knows the women scream when they see him. But the men also know in their gut that he’s a “man’s man.” He’s not full of himself. He doesn’t take anybody talking about his rock, his “Miche”, his main girl or his baby girls!! He has no problem holding, hugging and kissing babies. He respects the elderly, He even looks good hanging out with the dog!!
So, yes, you are so right. People just like the guy. But as my sweet momma used to say, “it sure don’t hurt when they are easy on the eye…” So, while it’s not the only criterion, it is a very, very important one.
Thanks Chips, Isonproze and everyone else for your compliments…forgive the wrong words in the post.
Oh and yes isonprize, the icing on the cake is, the man is not hard on the eyes
Thanks homegirl. Beautiful description of our beloved President.
My mother snd sister just got the Florida ballot in the mail!
The president is not on the ballot! No democrat is on the ballot, it’s all local.
Is this fake? What should she do?
is it the ballot for the Repub primary? Maybe that’s it, I don’t see why the general election ballots would be mailed out this early considering the Repubs don’t even have an official nominee.
Is there a special election or something? You can call the Supervisor of Elections for the county.
I think it might be similar as Oregon. In the Primary Election here in 2008 I helped change my parents and one of my brothers registration online from Republican to Democratic then copied it for their signature and sent it in for them. They agreed to let me do this so they could vote for Obama in the Primary as it was a tight election with Hillary. I agreed to change their registration back when the primary was over if they wanted me to. They did not. That means they will only receive a Democratic Primary ballot this year instead of a Republican one. It doesn’t matter in the General Election as you can vote for either party. If you were a former Republican and want to change parties permanently you can check with your courthouse to do so.
Are they registered Republicans? My parents and I live in FLA. Both of my parents are registered Republicans (but voted for Obama and my mom worked in his campaign office in Miami in 2008) but they have received their ballots and they only have Repub candidates for the FLA primary scheduled for 1/31/12.
It cannot be the general election ballot-not possible even for Florida. If you apply to vote absentee that ballot will arrive MUCH closer to the the actual election. If there are no Democrats on the ballot, it’s a Republican primary ballot.
Since there were no contenders in the democratic party, and all acknowledged that President Obama is running, he is already the nominee, yes?
Did you see this on TPM? Possible Romney was touted to have received 20 votes more than he actually earned.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2012/01/did_santorum_actually_win.php
Either way, it’s awful. I now actually dislike Santorum as much as I dislike Romney and Gingrich.

Beautiful!
Two things:
1. LOVE THAT MURAL SO MUCH!!!
2. BSG fans go here and enjoy the lols: http://www.collegehumor.com/video/6683770/battlestar-galactica-rpg
Amazing. Captures the best of both of them, and our Nation.
OOOooooooooo, so so so cool.
I contacted the guy who took the photo via Flickr mail and asked if they will consider making photographs or images available for wallpapers on our desktops or iphones etc.
I know sometimes you can “set image as background” but we know how those turn out sometimes - grainy, stretched, bleh. I want nice un-distorted images.
Lets see if he responds.
DAMN!!!!!!! I love this one. They just need to cut that painting out the wall.
Love it too ASF, the expressions on both their faces are exquisite!
I love how much art work gets produced for PBO’s campaigns from so many different people. It’s just an amazing level of creativity that the campaign leverages brilliantly. You would never see this happening from GOP.
Oh I am guessing copycat Mitt will roll out a mural of his family soon, but we an only hope NOT!
CAN only hope not
Wonderful inspiration!
PS: captured it on iPad, turned out perfectly for wallpaper! Yay, thank you Steve Jobs!
I love this wall mural.
It’s really lovely, isn’t it Obama Grandmama? I want it on my wall!
Breathtaking. Only inspiring people inspire beautiful art. Perfectly captured both of their demeanors — not just their appearances, but their personalities as well. The drawing of Michelle is especially insightful. Gorgeous.
I think whenever someone brings up Romney in conversation, I’ll just say “He’s such a phony.” End of story.
About Mr. Cordray - he looks so mild-mannered but I suspect there’s a spine of steel in there. It will be interesting to watch the R’s try to grill him in one of their kangaroo-court-type “hearings.”
We’re having a “blah” festival on twitter tonight. So funny. Remember Santorum told OReilly he did not say black he’s sure he said blah.
@avd911 I’m blah and I’m Proud.
also…My Prezzident is BLAH!
It’s been fun!
I knew that was going to be some entertaining fun! We could have our own little contest….
Is this what they meant by “Not Mitt”??????????? !!
NOT SURPRISED! GOP PLAYED TRICKS AT THE END OF THE NIGHT WHEN SANTORUM WAS LEADING TO GIVE RONMEY WIN!
I love the video at the top outside the Eason’s house. Listen to the tone of the folks as they speak. You can hear it, everytime someone says ‘ MR. PRESIDENT’. The Brotha, who just ‘ happened’ to be standing in the neighborhood with a suit on just makes me smile. You all know, if President Obama showed up on your block, you’d have the same tone in your voice. I shall not lie, I would be pushing Peanut to the front, just at the hope of getting one of those pictures………..LOL
WOW, is that a new poster?
Hiya Meta, not very new, I saw a photo of it a while ago on the wall at Chicago HQ, but only found a good photo of it tonight:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/barackobamadotcom/6463600597/in/set-72157628299322585/
Love it!
Ah, thanks.
I need that poster. NEED, NEED, NEED that poster. WOW!!!!
No. Well maybe. Whatever a “screen print” is what they’re calling it. They’re taking key lines from speeches and making “screen prints” that will be available for a limited time only.
Saw these in the store last night. The info is that they are limited editions, but new ones will be released all through the campaign. My AJA poster just arrived in yesterday’s mail, it is exactly as beautiful as I expected. So, I think there will be lots of great choices coming along, just don’t hesitate to ‘buy it now’ if you see something you really really like. That happened a lot with posters in 2008.
Who’s in Georgia?
http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2012/01/05/398857/georgia-state-repafraid-mormon/
Georgia State Rep: ‘I’m Afraid’ Of Romney’s Mormon Faith, But ‘It’s Better Than A Muslim’
that is just ignorant and plain disgusting.
So they don’t care that the man is a lying liar with no core but are worried about his faith? SMDH
Has anyone seen this new item over at the campaign store? http://store.barackobama.com/featured/hope-screen-print.html
Oh wow - that is beautiful GoBrooklyn, just added it to the post. Thank you SO much!
It’s ok…not that exciting to me…I DO like the one above that Chips posted
My daughter is an incredible artist and painted me the “Hope” picture. It is ABSOLUTELY THE SPITTING IMAGE that we have loved these last 3 years:) It proudly hangs in the library/study in my house..I look at it everyday….
Not crazy about so many different fonts but it’s a cool idea.
Just saw they have market bags!! Must have!! Plastic bags were outlawed here a couple of years ago so everybody shops with their own bags.
Racist image of Michelle Obama based on Versailles painting
A baldly racist depiction of First Lady Michelle Obama that appeared Tuesday on a right-wing website is based on a 1775 portrait of Marie Antoinette by Jean-Baptiste André Gautier-Dagoty (1740-1786). The full-length painting hangs outside Paris in the Palace of Versailles.
The Internet image grafts Obama’s face onto Gautier-Dagoty’s lavish depiction of the French queen, dressed in full regalia. It also replaces the draped left arm of the young monarch, then barely 20, with a muscular black arm and shifts the position of the right hand to place it in front of a world globe.
The caricature of Obama as a profligate queen relies on the racist stereotype of an “uppity Negro,” which emerged among slave masters in an earlier American era. Obama, born into a working-class Chicago family whose roots are traced to the pre-Civil War South, graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School, prior to holding several high-level positions in the academic and private sectors.

rikyrah,I will not waste my time with these people, so to hell with them.
Sadly, we have to prepare ourselves to see Michelle Obama viciously attacked in the coming year, because she’ll be an active campaigner. President Obama won’t be able to campaign 24/7 obviously so Michelle is going to do a LOT I think.
They are afraid of FLOTUS. They know she is well like as First Lady, so they are trying to tarnish her image, but it won’t work.
It won’t work indeed. This is red meat for the rabid base but it will be repulsive to independant voters.
The more they attack her, the more we will love her. She is already adored by the military and this did not happen overnight. She and Dr. Biden have proved that they are genuinely concerned about the military and they have backed it up with “joining forces” and including the families in a lot of events.
am I the only one that can give a shyte about what those ignant mofo’s think about our FLOTUS?
She has more class in her pinky toe than any of those jackals AND she lives in the White House with her loving husband and father of her children POTUS. So they can gtfoohwtbs
REALLY NOT INTERESTED IN SEEING OUR BEAUTIFUL 1ST LADY DEMEANED IN ANY WAY…AND I WILL SAY THAT ABOUT ANY OF OUR PREVIOUS 1ST LADIES!!!

Kasai? You’re a gem.
Thanks Chips:-)
WOWZERS. This definitely is goosebumps territory.
Thanks and great to see you, kasai!!
You welcome Meta…..We will be victorious once again
Kasai…thank you SO much for posting that here. Must see….Must feel…all over again!
Yes we will DesertFlower!!!! There’s nothing more gratifying than to work harder to make sure PBO is re-elected
I am Pressing ON
I’m with you! Yes We WIll !!!
Excellent Kasai. You always come through with the hip and trendy videos to FIRE US UP!!
heads up Cordray is gonna be on LOD tonite. It should be interesting.
I just watch Cordray on O’Donnell and I enjoy listening to him.
I really like him!
Richard Cordray was great. I really like him and I loved seeing the clips of Elizabeth Warren. The Republicans must be saying who’s bright idea was it to go after Elizabeth Warren. Fast Forward Elizabeth Warren is running for senator in Massachusetts and is cleaning Scott Brown’s clock. And best of all, because of Republican Party obstruction forcing President Obama’s hand the American people now have a director of the CFPB to look out for them. Nice.
HUFFPUFF IS ON A MISSION TO DESTROY SANTORUM BC HUFFPUFF’S OWNER IS A ROMNEY SUPPORTER!
Not sure if this has been posted…but liberal (giggle) MSNBC has a BAIN connection- yes that BAIN
They are both co owners of the weather channel!
Thanks LOL. Old news. That explains a lot of the Romney pandering by MSNBC. Which really doesn’t matter, cause the entire MSM will be pandering to him once he wins the Rethug nomination.

Caucus Vote Counter Says Romney Mistakenly Given 20 Votes

Oh uh
lol
You would think the msm would pick up on the New Iowa results!
If it’s true, maybe they also have to double check, their is a lot of crappy reporting, downright lies lately.
Kathleen Sebelius writes about ACA in the Washington Post . My thought is, that many MORE in this Administration need to highlight the good programs that have been implemented in this WH. PBO is not a chest beater…it is up to those agencies and staffers to put this stuff in every newspaper in the country. Just my thought. It’s too good NOT to be known about, or understood by every American.

I am in total agreement desertflower. We need more of these Democrats to do opeds or something to tout their good accomplishments. PBO can’t do it all by himself.
Lawrence O’Donnell just teased a segment on Mitt Romney and the “TELEPROMPTER”. This should be good. Apparently, Willard has been running into some problems memorizing lines. I really think he should promise never to use a teleprompter since he thinks it is such a problem for President Obama to be using one.

If Abraham Lincoln were running for president today, a campaign attack ad might go something like this:
(Cue sneering voice of ad announcer.) “Why should we trust you as president when as a lawyer you defended whiskey-hating women who smashed up a saloon, an admitted adultress and a wife who poisoned her husband?” A message at the end of the ad reads that it was “Paid for by white male property owners who know a woman’s place.”
.
The Lincoln spoof aimed at high school and college students is featured on Flackcheck.org, a nonpartisan, nonprofit Web site launched Thursday with the goal of encouraging journalists and the public to be more vigilant in truth-squadding misleading political ads and candidates’ statements.

Here’s Why the GOP is Ranting Over the New Consumer Agency
The Bottom 99%
The firestorm of protest over the appointment of Richard Cordray as Director of the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau offers a stark view of the modern Republican philosophy of deregulation at the expense of everyday consumers. This case study of conservative dogma flies in the face of overwhelming evidence that lax regulation of the financial sector played a central role in the unprecedented trillion-dollar economic crisis.
A look at the Agency’s mission helps to explain why blocking Cordray has been such a high priority for the GOP.
What Does the Consumer Financial Protection Board Do?

I’ve been spammed today by a site selling steam iron mops.
If they promised to send this guy to make my home sparkly clean up I might be interested….
…. but otherwise: go away.
Chips where did you find this gem?
Oh my.
Meta, you are TOO funny with your “oh my”
I remember that. It’s from a ‘walk a day in my shoes’ or some such. Then Sen. Obama spent a day with Pauline Beck, a home care attendant as she spent a day with her charge. They cleaned, did laundry, cooked. She was singing his praises.

Okay, so I’m wondering if this makes me a presidential groupie or something? To see a pic of a guy with a mop and know the backstory is just a little ghoulish, no?
Oh well. We certainly know our president around here!
http://bangordailynews.com/2012/01/05/opinion/mitt-romney-out-of-control/
“If this is Mitt Romney’s idea of a victory rally, one shudders to think what would have happened if he had lost the Iowa caucuses.
The day after his impossibly thin eight-vote victory, the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination flew here for a town hall meeting at Manchester Central High School, where he was to bask in the endorsement of his 2008 rival, John McCain.
But the senator grimaced when he was introduced, and as Romney delivered his own stump speech, an increasingly impatient McCain pulled up his sleeve and checked his watch. McCain gave his endorsement address without mentioning Romney’s Iowa win until the end.
“By the way, we forgot to congratulate him on his landslide victory last night,” he said, laughing. Romney ignored him.”
More good stuff about Romney being heckled by OWS people and interacting on the plane with the press. (Chips if this violates the posting guidelines, please remove. It’s about a sixth of the original article.)
Washington, D.C. – As part of the Obama Administration’s efforts to enhance the security and reliability of the nation’s electrical grid, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced an initiative to further protect the electrical grid from cyber attacks. The “Electric Sector Cybersecurity Risk Management Maturity” project, a White House initiative led by the Department of Energy in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), will leverage the insight of private industry and public sector experts to build on existing cybersecurity measures and strategies to create a more comprehensive and consistent approach to protecting the nation’s energy delivery system.
“This initiative is another important step forward in improving the security of the Nation’s energy infrastructure and ensuring that the country’s electrical systems remain secure, reliable and resilient,” said Secretary Chu. “Establishing a comprehensive cybersecurity approach will give utility companies and grid operators another important tool to improve the grid’s ability to respond to cybersecurity risks.”

I saw the instruction on a hair blow dryer once that said ‘Do not use in the shower’. It was easy to imagine why they felt the need to state that in no uncertain terms.,
I can’t help but wonder what they know, that we don’t, that they are making it a priority to secure our electric grid from cyber attack. hmmm

Just an update. Many were outraged to learn that a young American citizen had been mistakenly deported to Columbia and is now in limbo…well…good news! She’s coming home.
http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/05/us/texas-colombia-teen/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
(CNN) — Colombia is preparing to hand over to U.S. officials a Dallas teenager who was mistakenly deported after she ran away from home more than a year ago, the South American country’s foreign ministry said in a statement Thursday night.
Jakadrien Turner will be turned over to diplomatic officials Friday so she can be transported to the United States, the statement said. But the foreign ministry did not say when — or how — that will happen.
Did you see that movie Columbiana?
no
Sad story too. She’s 15 and pregnant according to the local news.
Yeah, this story was/is a HOT MESS! I was horrified reading the info you posted last night, desertflower. just horrified. I hope this young lady get the help she so obviously, desperately needs, especially with a baby on the way. . FOR REAL!!!
It all stems from Sarah the Quitter. I swear from the time she came on the scene, this country took a flying leap into the realm of madness.
I will forever hold McCain accountable for this. just SMH
LunarSea, whatever respect I had for McCain when he pick Sarah Palin as his VP candidate, well I lost that respect. Like you I will forever blame him for releasing that woman on us.
Thanks Suzanne
lmao
that is funny as heck. lol
Liberals have the best sense of humor!
I can’t wait to see what will be dreamed up during the campaign.
I’ve repeated the end of West Wing Week way too many times now. Love that Bo spot. And the musical punctuation was perfect.
I’m sure there’s a psych-analysis in there somewhere.
The Bo bit cracked me up, LOVED it!!!
Here is the answer-
On Fox News’ On The Record tonight, Santorum said that he spoke with the head of the Iowa Republican Party, who told him that there was a separate counting error that incorrectly stripped 21 votes from Romney. Therefore, the two counting errors, according to Santorum, have largely offset themselves, although the final certification is yet to be completed.
Oh, whatever. They’re both losers!!
I DONT CARE…DO YOU????
WHATEVER!! If Santorum wants to believe that crap so be it. BOY, we have a doozy in store for us this fall.
Hey we were right!
Soldier at Ron Paul rally could face trouble
~Snip
DES MOINES, Iowa - An Army reservist who took the stage at a political event for Ron Paul and expressed his support for the Republican presidential candidate could face legal troubles, the military said Thursday.
Cpl. Jesse Thorsen, 28, stood at a podium at the Paul rally in Iowa on Tuesday night wearing his military fatigues and said meeting the Texas congressman was like “meeting a rock star.”
“His foreign policy is by far, hands down better than any other candidate’s out there,” Thorsen told the cheering crowd.
Army Reserve spokeswoman Maj. Angel Wallace said participating in a partisan political event in uniform is a violation of Defense Department rules and the military is reviewing whether Thorsen could face legal ramifications. Soldiers are permitted to vote, participate in some political activities and express opinions about candidates as long as they are not in uniform and speaking in an official capacity, she said.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57353507/soldier-at-ron-paul-rally-could-face-trouble
Since he’s in the reserves, that means he got specially dressed up in his uniform for this event. DUMB. And it was really stupid of Paul to encourage this.
Well, I just have to say thanks a lot!!! I was supposed to be grading papers and doing lesson plans tonight and thanks to you prolific people I have done NOTHING but sit here and read updates TOD. My poor second graders won’t be taking any papers home tomorrow!
Oh, ML, I am sorry! I was supposed to finish up my logs, and same thing happened to me, can’t seem to help myself! I think it is np ones fault but my own! It is just so cozy here at TOD on a winter night!
I know it’s my fault; I’d just like to blame someone else! I’m sitting here in my snuggly robe listening to the cat snore and absorbing all the great posts. It’s like hanging out with friends, but I don’t have to clean my house!
Night everyone:

New ppp polling in the state of SC has mitt Romney up by 10 points.
If he wins SC by that amount, it’s over.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2012/01/could_this_be_over_fast.php?m=1
The same Poll that claimed that Paul was supposed to finish first.
I love the way your president has brought the office to the people. he has humanized it in a way I have never seen before.
