‘night everyone

Thanks for tolerating my rant in the last post, when it comes to the ‘leadership’ of the Catholic church I generally mislay the plot, I can never find enough words to articulate my contempt.

I was going to say something completely stupid like ‘this is a deal-breaker for me, if the admin compromises with the Catholic church I’m outta here and TOD is done’, that’s how insanely worked up I am, but I’ll take a deep breath and sleep on it. We’ll see.

Sorry for being so miserable, but the notion of any form of compromise with the Catholic church, not least on women’s ‘issues’, just flattens me.

But I’ll keep the faith:

See you tomorrow.

Given that I’m a male, I’m sure you’ll forgive if I use a slightly different hash tag :D

We’ll win this because the dumbest thing that the GOP could ever have done at this point was to align themselves with a bunch of child molesters and obstruction of justice perverts against the women of America.

This is definitely a fight they should have never, ever started. We’ll finish it and President Obama will have four more years of great service to our Republic.

That’s it, Bob. The GOP strategists are like blind mice. They are running around in circles trying to find some issue that will make them seem relevant and they have bit into the wrong piece of cheese. Because they’re blind, they didn’t see the warning sign: Do not mess with women. We are strong, we are angry and we are dangerous when crossed.

A few months or maybe a year ago some women in one of the African countries locked their legs at the knees and the men caved in and passed some legistation. I wish I knew how to look for the link. My knees are locked forever but if I was young I’d lock them if all the women that are upset with what is happening would agree to withold sex until the matter is resolved. FYI, Ms Chipsticks

As you know, none of us chose to be born, we don’t choose our parents.

Since our parents are the vehicle for the ‘religion’ every new born encounters, well, the notion of ‘choice of a religion’ is, and has been since the emergence of our species and the notion of religion, essentially non-existent.

We are born. Our parents have some form of ‘religion,’ or not, and we’re stuck with it until we begin, hopefully, thinking for ourselves.

I was born to Catholic parents and for a number of years it all seemed cozy and rather elitist to be told all the time that, as long as I was a good little boy, I was on a fast track to heaven.

But, it happened that I was also being educated – oops – education, stuff like science, etc. OOPS. Started actually ‘thinking’ and digging into history – OOPS – Crusades – OOPS ….. and the more digging and the more thinking the more it became clear that I’d been indoctrinated into an organization that I’d no longer select to be affiliated than the KKK, Pol Pot, Hitler’s youth … you get the point.

While I know and love many Catholics, I know and love them not because (in some cases, in spite of the fact that) they are Catholics, but because of all the other qualities they have that make up the difference. I’m not exclusive in that sentiment, it’s the case for every other person I know irrespective of their religious beliefs.

In other words, it’s who each person is that matters.

All the mechanisms, the institutions, the cults, the sects, the whatever that have been devised to divide humanity, which is what all religions do (you’re either one of us, or …) – SUCK – and are fundamentally anathema to the sustainability of our species, let alone its enhancement, evolution.

For a ‘religion’ to make any sense it needs to acknowledge that we hardly have a clue about what it means for something to be alive. And, in reality, we have no capacity to know what lies beyond life, beyond our universe.

We should, and must, be humble enough to admit that limitation and truly marvel at the fact that we do know how to love, to care, to be giving, to sacrifice for others – not because someone told us we’d go to heaven, but because we KNOW that the quality of our life is enriched by how we enrich the lives of others.

If we could just learn to be patient and build on these basic elements of how and why we care for one another – something our Barack Obama does and has done for all his adult life – we will evolve. Others will then have an opportunity to learn, to make choices and, hopefully, continue the evolution of the ONLY species in the known, several billion year old universe that we inhabit, that has a clue what it means to Love.

Thank you for the community you have nurtured.

You and me both, Chips. I felt the same way and had to walk it back. I realized that if the admin compromised, it would be first time I’d truly be disappointed. But that wouldn’t mean that I don’t still love and support PBO 100%. The thing about us, what makes us different from emoprogs is our unconditional love and support of PBO. If there is compromise, it will be the only one that I find extremely hard to swallow. The others left a bad taste in my mouth, but I handled them because I was doing it for PBO, because I believed in him and I believed that whatever he was doing he was doing it because it was the right thing to do. If there is compromise on this issue, it’s really going to hurt. I won’t be able to swallow it, but I do know that I, like you and all of TOD will find a way to live with it because we are all in it for him and he’s in it for us. We’ll be disappointed but I think, so will he, but he’ll still show up. He’ll still be there fighting, tooth and nail for us, so we’ve got to be there, fighting tooth and nail for him. So get you’re mad on, Chips. Yell and scream and gripe, then we’ll meet back here, same time, same place, ready to tell all the trolls and the catholic bishops and the good for nothing repug party to go fuck themselves cause we’re sticking with PBO, even if we don’t always agree with him.

Bob, you are a language master who I hope will write a book of reflections someday. I will sign up now to purchase it. I too grew up Catholic and experienced the liberating moment in my early 20′s when I felt free to think and act for myself without a lot of old, remote, very flawed men telling me what to do. Unfortunately no one else in my family took that step and when my “devout” sister’s children were in their early and vulnerable adolescence they were abused by a priest they trusted. Decades later, I still can’t control my anger about this, even though the rest of the family plods on with their Catholic rituals, often more by habit than belief. So much fear and guilt is inculcated at an early age that fear holds them fast.

“So much fear and guilt is inoculated at an early age that fear holds them fast.” I’m not Catholic, I’m not anything.I did my good deeds when I was young, going to church and listening to the indoctrination…it didn’t take me long to figure out that I didn’t think like them.I remember being about 12 years old. That’s how quickly I realized that it was not for me.
I didn’t want to get into a religious discussion here these past couple of days, because I was certain to offend/piss someone off….but I could not let your very astute and truthful statement go. I am so sorry that members of your family were victims of these “holier than thou” members of the church.I wouldn’t be able to control my anger either….to hear that the rest of the family still feels it necessary to belong to a place that stole the innocence and inflicted unimaginable pain on the most vulnerable members of your family….makes my stomach turn.
        I am so sorry.

I’ve said this elsewhere, and I’ll say it here:

It’s easy to confuse the Catholic Church hierarchy with the Church as a whole. The Church is EVERYONE - all 1.2 billion (or so) of us who call ourselves Catholics. And many of us DO believe that Jesus said to take care of others.

Polls show most Catholics support contraception. In fact, Maddow had a poll that showed 58% of Catholics believe employers should be required to cover contraception, while only 55% of the public at large believes so.

The bishops? Most of them are way out of touch with their faithful on this.

But the hierarchy does not speak for the Church as a whole - as much as some in the hierarchy (as well as some of the Church’s fiercest critics) would like to think.

I believe what I believe - and I plan to be a Catholic until either (a) I die or (b) they kick me out of the Church. And you know what? As a Catholic, I also believe in protecting God’s people. That means contraception needs to play a role!

-ScottyUrb, proud Catholic and proud supporter of women’s health

PS: While we’re at it, if we could have some female priests, that would be great. ;-)

Polls of Catholic voters as opposed to polls of all Catholics are less encouraging and are less encouraging when the exact question of Catholic affiliates is asked. But is it a one-issue vote? No one knows.

The parsing bothers me. I see the first amendment violated if the church is allowed to shove their beliefs into my private life. I think any substantive compromise endangers the President with progressives and Democrats, and will undo some of the recent gains. The administration must stand with women on this. Bidden was terrible today. His oath is to the Constitution in law and spirit. A Catholic affiliate must abide by the law if it is involved in the commons. they don’t get to dictate policy without paying taxes. There are lots of things the government does that I don’t agree with, but I am part of the commons and accept that.

sorry its really a bad habit of mine. I always called presidents by their name, Clinton, Bush, etc. I never meant any disrespect by calling Obama Obama and not president Obama but will try to rectify that as its not my intention to ruffle feathers.

Anyway I’m simply stating that we need to not get sucked into what the republicans are trying to do. President Obama needs to stand up to the pressure from within his own party as he has done before and we need to stand behind him. This isn’t about politics in my opinion but about freedom, freedom from religion and those who try to dictate to others how they lead their lives.

when you say, ‘president obama needs to stand up to the pressure,’ or, ‘i sincerely hope obama doesn’t cave,’ it sounds like you’ve forgotten who you’re talking about. he’s the smartest guy in the room, and he’s got this. we may not understand, but we can be damn sure he’s on it. so you don’t need to worry over him and guide him.

Nah Jeff, you’re not so far gone.

              1. If you need a short form for President Barack Obama, it’s PBO. That way, you don’t have to spell his name out all the time or call him
              Obama.

              2. When you want to freak out about PBO maybe later compromising - remember compromise is not a dirty word - think back to the debt
ceiling deal where Boehner thought he got 98% of what he wanted and when the final plan was rolled out, we found out PBO won and
got what he wanted in addition to saving Planned Parenthood funds.

              3. When you want to freak out about PBO maybe later compromising, remember that when emoprogs like Cenk Ugyur were freaking out
about the lack of a public option in the ACA, they stupidly couldn’t see the forest from the trees. They couldn’t see the big picture
because of their blind rage. They couldn’t see that ACA was the most progressive bill in decades. That it could eventually lead to a
form of single payer. In a year, 2.5M young people have healthcare, women will get contraceptive and preventive services covered,
              pre-existing conditions are covered, etc.

So keep in mind that there is always a method to PBO’s madness. He always takes the long view and in the end we are better for it. Hope this helps. ;)

It certainly doesn’t help that Biden and Kerry have already come out against it but I’m certainly not losing any sleep over this. This precedence is too great. Kerry and Biden have a right to their opinion, but President Obama, while he will listen to all opinions, has never been shy about making his own decisions in opposition to those around him. Vice President Biden was opposed to going after Bin Laden. PO heard him out and chose his own path.

Gramiam44, you are so right, Biden and Kerry are entitle to their opinion, others have step forward in favor of the decision. This President will listen to all sides then he as President will make the decision. The decision has been made. And like Rachel Maddow, I believe this is a made up controversy all by the certain catholic bishops, the Republicans and the media.

Listen, can we get it through our skulls that just because a sociopath-ic pedophile has concocted a plan wherein he may find employment within an ecclesiastical body, so as to hide the truth about his putrid x-rated fantasies with our children, does not mean we are to bury our heads in the sand. This is true. And it has the same effect on people each time, it seems. People get anxious. This is a perfect illustration of why the President needs the SuperPAC. If the liberals on TV are busy spreading nonsense on this, and the VP’s utterance of some questionable statements makes people nervous, and the media is hosting these crazy Bishops and their GOP cronies, as though they have a right to speak on this subject - then the President needs all the ammunition he can get to counter this effect. This issue is a non-starter. The evidence shows that Catholic churches are being hypocritical and political. The public is behind the President on this. The President hasn’t uttered a single word yet, except his original decision to stick with women instead of taking a more political stand with the churches speaks volumes.

Chipsticks - I think your “I got this’ poster up above is the perfect advice for all of us. Every time we’ve gotten nervous about a contentious issue (and this issue certainly warrants some nervousness), the President has come through. Until he speaks, I’m keeping the faith.

That’s exactly why they’re doing this. I know that there has been a lot of talk about compromise, but religious groups are already excluded. I didn’t here exactly what VP Biden or Kerry said, but just because they said the word compromise, doesn’t mean that they expect the President to. We have to make sure our voices are heard. This is a tricky issue that I’m worried could spiral out of control solely due to the media’s presentation of it. A week ago, there was hardly a dust up and no one really focused on it. However, it seems the higher-ups in the media got their marching orders from a higher source. I’m not saying there is a Catholic conspiracy (full disclosure: I am Catholic), but it was remarkable how, within a 24-hour period, the press changed on a dime.

A few days ago, the story was how Pres. Obama’s position was in the mainstream and that the Republicans might be barking up the wrong tree.

Unfortunately, that’s changed. The media, specifically Catholics in the media, have latched onto this narrative that Obama is undermining the core values of the Catholic Church and potentially creating an election year mess.

Now, on its face, this isn’t THAT big of a deal. Polls still show Obama has the American people on his side. My concern is, though, that over time, the media will successfully manipulate those voters into believing Obama is doing just what they’re saying he’s doing - you know, trampling on religious freedom.

When you’ve got respected (supposed) members of the media like Cokie Roberts, who’s left-leaning, and a Catholic, suggesting this is going to be a problem for Obama, it creates the perception that, in fact, it is a problem. Americans who, a week ago, were thinking to themselves, “what’s the big deal…” are now asking themselves, “could this be a big deal?”

That’s how perception can change. The media is turning this into such a problem for Obama that it’s possible Americans will start seeing it as a problem for Obama, even if there was none to begin with.

I don’t want Obama to cave. But I also don’t want this to blowup into something that follows him around the next few months and begins to drag on his approval ratings and election chances.

It’s really a difficult situation all around and the fact it is a difficult situation sucks the most - because it shouldn’t be!

But when you’ve got some Democrats coming out against Obama, guys like Tim Kaine and I read articles that say the Democrats in the Senate are split on this decision, when we all know the Republicans are unified, I get heartburn because it’s possible the outcome, at this juncture, is a no-win proposition for Obama. If he buckles and makes a compromise, he’ll lose some support. If he doesn’t, it’s got the possibility to fester for the next few months like an open wound and maybe it heals by election day…but maybe it doesn’t.

It shouldn’t be an issue, of course, but it’s turning into one and the media is to blame. They’re making this an issue. They’re questioning Obama. They’re panting the seeds of doubt and I would not be surprised that if, in a week, a new batch of polls released showed that a majority of Americans started aligning with the Catholic-side and not Obama’s.

The same thing happened with the healthcare debate. The media portrayed it in such a way that, what was a positive bill at the beginning, slowly turned into an unpopular, ghastly piece of legislation because they spent the latter part of ’09 talking up the potential concerns Americans had with this bill instead of focusing on those who supported it. Americans heard how BAD it was that they started believing it was bad.

So, who knows. My hope is that, a week or two from now, we’ve moved on to another topic. Maybe he should go invade Syria. ;)

I feel so much better when people show the President the respect owe to him, it is President Obama!!!! And it wasn’t to long ago that these know it all media folks like Cokie Roberts who were saying that things were doom and gloom for President Obama. This is a made up controversy by certain people, and the bishops and Republicans are right in there. Because you have some weak knee Democrats coming out saying they want some compromise, so what. The polls I have seen said that most Americans are on the President side, and that include catholic Americans. So where are these polls you are talking about Drunken Irishmen? It amazes me that when things are going good oh how we love this President, but let a little march wind comes at him and we are oh so ready to jump ship, at least afew are. I will continue to support him regardless. Because I do believe Obama, no, that’s President Obama wants to do what is best for women and their lives. And to hell with this cave B.S., I am so sick of people always talking about this President caving. As far as invading Syria, what do you want him to do make up lies like G.W. Bush did to invade Iraq. :) No our President need to continue to do what he is doing, trying to help Americans who need jobs, who want to work, who is struggling out there. While the Republicans sit on there ass and do nothing, but try to make up controversy. OBAMA/BIDEN 2012 all the way.

It’s like we’re going through a feedback loop. Didn’t the Jeremiah Wright controversy blow up around the Feb/March in 2008? Then-Senator Obama took his time and let the din consume all the nutballs, then came out with, frankly, one of the greatest speeches on race ever and everybody calmed the f**k down.

Just remember he eats difficult subjects for breakfast. Be patient and have faith. It’ll be alright.

So true dudette. That period during the primary was described as one of those as potentially fatal (to the campaign). The media felt they had their hook and were practically salivating all over their desks. Our President took his time, gathered everyone and spoke from the heart, with clarity and reason. The speech brought people to tears while it encouraged each of us to examine how we’ve either contributed to progress or fanned the flames of infamy. As Lisa said, earlier, I trust him because he could have chosen to do what was politically expedient then. He did not. He said what he had to say and let the chips (sorry for the pun) fall where they may. This too will be handled with the same grace and care.

My goodness, PBO’s campaign team really know how to reach into one’s heart and make one so emotional. From Feb 10, 2025 to Feb 10, 2012, we have been on this incredible, exhilarating, joyous, difficult, at times overwhelming but never disappointing journey. His Presidency has shown us that though it may be a marathon and not a sprint, he has changed the world on a dime. He has made legislative history at every turn and the images in the video reel show that in 100% clarity.

I am sharing this video far and wide because EVERYONE needs to be reminded where we were, where we are now, and where we have yet to go. EVERYONE needs to be reminded about how hard President Obama has worked on our behalf, why we fight for him, and why we must NEVER abandon him. Not at this crucial moment.

Senate Democrats are optimistic about President Obama’s chances of re-election and think he may have coattails this November.

Democratic lawmakers described the president as being “really upbeat” and in a “good mood” on Wednesday when he addressed the Senate Democratic caucus during a one-day retreat at Nationals Park in Southeast D.C.

They said Obama’s campaign manager Jim Messina gave an encouraging presentation on the president’s strategy for winning re-election, a plan that relied heavily on using social media to mobilize voters.

    Heads up…………Jake Tapper is reporting:

White House to Announce ‘Accommodation’ for Religious Organizations on Contraception Rule

With the White House under fire for its new rule requiring employers including religious organizations to offer health insurance that fully covers birth control coverage, ABC News has learned that later today the White House — possibly President Obama himself — will likely announce an attempt to accommodate these religious groups.
The move, based on state models, will almost certainly not satisfy bishops and other religious leaders since it will preserve the goal of women employees having their birth control fully covered by health insurance.
Sources say it will be respectful of religious beliefs but will not back off from that goal, which many religious leaders oppose since birth control is in violation of their religious beliefs.
White House officials have discussed the state law in Hawaii, where religious groups are allowed to opt out of coverage that includes birth control, as long as employees are given information whether such coverage can be obtained. But this accommodation would not go that far.
This announcement would not go that far. Sources say it will involve health insurance companies helping to provide the coverage, since it’s actually cheaper for these companies to offer the coverage than to not do so, because of unwanted pregnancies and resulting complications.

    http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/02/white-house-to-announce-accommodation-for-religious-organizations-on-contraception-rule/

I hope PBO makes the statement and makes it clear he is not giving up on the rights of women.

We have fought hard and long for equal rights and we are not going back. WOMEN WILL NOT SURRENDER THIS ISSUE.

    • 117 utaustinliberal
      February 10, 2025 at 7:58 am

I saw this on Twitter and the gist of the story is that PBO isn’t rightfully backing down from the contraception mandate. It’s basically saying that yes, the Hawaii model allows religious institutions to opt out of the BC mandate as long as they provide information to their employees about where to get contraceptive coverage but PBO’s model will not allow you to opt out, but will link up religious institutions with health insurance companies so that BC coverage can be provided to employees. It’s good all around and if the Catholic Bishops still can’t get the bee out of their bonnets then they should sit down and shut up. A majority of Catholics support PBO’s decision and with this possible announcement, they’ll be in PBO’s corner even more because he’s providing additional help to these religious institutions to make the transition easier.

The Planned Parenthood issue hit me in the gut and I responded immediately, without any prompting, by making a donation to them.
This issue about the birth control has kind of crept up gradually, so we need to be just as strong in our support of the President and resistance to the Catholic bosses. This is a media response opportunity and a time to write complaint letters to people like Kerry, Biden, Tim Kaine in VA etc.
Our message - this is already the norm in many Catholic businesses and in many states. It’s about fairness in health care.
In my liberal/left bubble I thought it shouldn’t be such a problem for the President but listening to NPR yesterday, they said the Catholic bishops (bosses) feel like they have the upper hand and are not in the mood for compromise.
The Catholic bosses might overreach - If they had their way we’d go back to the days of birth control being illegal. Hell, Rick Santorum says states should have the power to make it illegal.

Apparently the bill as is now written is stricter than the one in the 28 states, or at least the one in Hawaii. Maybe it’s been written this way to be a bargaining chip. So if the Republicans hold the payroll cuts hostage, PBO has the option to throw that in as a compromise.

I know some people are sick of Clintonites like James Carville at times, but he did have a point back in 1992.

They do this all the time, particularly when people are responding to the Democratic nominee/ President positively. Right now the economy is on an upswing, people in the U.S. are starting to feel it. The Republicans are seeing an enthusiasm gap in the nominee process, they don’t know who the hell they are gonna nominate because of the fear that guy may get trounced. The President has the trust of millions on the economy, on foreign policy and has the love of millions that Santorum and Romney are vying for. So when they get at this stage, they throw out the old culture war wedge issues and the media, hook, line, and sinker, especially if it affects them personally, latches onto it nonsensically, throwing out journalistic impartiality in the process. They do this to drag the other guy down, because I bet dollars to donuts those internal polls that the RNC along with the Republican campaigns are showing an asswhupping on November the sixth. They know this, so they have to peddle this faux outrage to fuck with every voting persons mind. Get the liberals to feel betrayed if President Obama backs off, get independents to become even more wishy-washy either way and get Republican base angry enough to vote for one of those guys on the other side. It happens all the time. THIS.IS.NO. DIFFERENT.

I’d like to ask TOD something: If those of you who are able to watch PBO let us know what PBO says and we can go to the twitterverse and let the media know that we are on to their lie in this matter. I am guessing that MSM is stirring controversy for $$$$$.

Full disclosure: I am a practicing Catholic and yes I used Birth Control until I didn’t need to use it any longer.

I have refused to get myself worked up over this fake controversy but what I see taking place has me a little perplexed by the “concern” that is permeating the blog. A few days ago bloggers were banned for stating “concern” that this issue would blow up and be a bad thing for the President. They both felt that there would be a Catholic backlash this November although neither had any hardcore proof to this other than what they saw or anticipated in their personal connections with Catholics. Yes we Catholics all got the letter from our Archdiocese which was pretty much (at least in my Parish) followed up by comments to be afraid…be very afraid that they are treading on your rights as Catholics from the pulpit. So understanding the power the Catholic hierarchy has over the Republican Party who were just looking for an opportunity to find something negative to cast upon the President I guess I sort of understood where there concern was coming from.

VP Biden as well as some other male Catholic Dems have come out in support of some sort of compromise. This doesn’t come as a surprise to me at all. They are men and they are Catholic. It’s not there bodies we are talking about so its easy for them to be convicted about the tenet of their Faith on this issue and that’s their right. I don’t have to agree with them but I’ll respect their opinion even if they are completely wrong. It doesn’t raise my level of concern one iota.

I have no idea what the President will decide to do but don’t you question where is the backlash that we saw last week when Komen was going to stop funding for Planned Parenthood. Where are the women who will be discriminated against should this law be waived for Catholic affliates? Why aren’t they rising up and insisting that the Republicans and the Catholic Church get out of their personal health care choices? IMO they are basically silent because the ones who receive the prescription benefit are happy to keep what they have and the ones that don’t have it won’t miss what they never had. In other words its not a make or break issue for woman as long as the BC is still available for their use. Some Catholic affiliates offer the prescriptions in their HC plans and others don’t. The woman who don’t have access through their HC plan get their needed birth control on their own or through subsidized programs like Planned Parenthood. It does not deter them from using BC which is substantiated by the high poll number of woman who use birth control.

Yes I believe that all employers should be mandated to give everyone the same health care benefits. But this will not be about BC this will be turned into by both the Catholic Church and the Republicans as an infringement on our liberties. That’s really what most of these Catholic men (whose wives probably use BC) are truly concerned about. They don’t want a fight with the Catholic Church.

I know plenty of you detest the Catholic Church and you are justified in your despise for what the leadership has allowed by Priest who maliciously sexually, mentally and psychologically abused Children for years and had it covered up by its leaders. There are no words that can ever be spoken to condone those despicable actions. Yet the Catholic Church remains a powerful Religious entity. The Republicans will try and take full advantage of this small issue. You see just as with the main electorate there are conservative Catholics (that will never vote for a Dem) and there are liberal Catholics (who always vote for the Dems) and then there are the “swing” Catholic voters who will sway from election to election.

I will respect whatever PBO decides since I hired him to do the bidding of the country. It’s the last I’ll say on this matter.

Everyone have a good Friday and try and breath. Whatever the outcome…this (fake controversy) too shall pass.

No, not at all but BC is not in jeapordy its how we access it that is being called into question. So I am saying that the outrage will not rise to the level that it probably should as long as it is available to us. You see BC is a personal issue that women have had the onus placed on them as to how to handle it since its inception. We will do what we need to do regardless of the laws. As long as we have access to it we will either pay for it or use organizations such as Planned Parenthood to get what is needed. Now if the Church or the Republicans go that extra step and try and take away our rights to BC it is my opinion that then and only then will there be an uprising. They tried this mess down in Alabama or Georgia or one of those southern, conservative states last fall and that mess was voted down big time. What that showed me was that no matter where you live or how socially conservative you may claim to be there is a line in the sand that women will not tolerate…don’t mess with our right to choose how we use our reproductive health care. This fake controversy is not even in the same ballpark IMO.

The White House will announce an effort to accommodate religious groups who have objected to a rule requiring religious organizations like charities and hospitals to include contraception in their healthcare plans, according to ABC News.

The White House has faced heavy criticism from the Catholic Church and other religious organizations, Republicans, and even some Democrats over the issue, and Vice President Biden has suggested a compromise could be worked out.

I’m reading here that John Kerry disagrees with the President on this birth control/insurance issue (haven’t read it directly myself). If it’s true, John Kerry should remember how the Catholic church treated him in 2004. I had Catholic friends tell me that their priests said in church how they should vote, and it wasn’t for Kerry. Or that every car in the parking lot of the church would have a flier telling them how to vote. Maybe they couched their words in language that gave them a technical out when it comes to keeping their tax exempt status, but their message was clear.

I read something the other day about some Catholic bishop saying that taking bc pills was akin to being a whore. Seriously?

      http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/09/opinion/collins-tales-from-the-kitchen-table.html?_r=1&ref=opinion

When I was first married, my mother-in-law sat down at her kitchen table and told me about the day she went to confession and told the priest that she and her husband were using birth control. She had several young children, times were difficult — really, she could have produced a list of reasons longer than your arm.

“You’re no better than a whore on the street,” said the priest.

This was, as I said, a long time ago. It’s just an explanation of why the bishops are not the only Roman Catholics who are touchy about the issue of contraception.

These days, parish priests tend to be much less judgmental about parishioners who are on the pill — the military was not the first institution in this country to make use of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” system. “In most parishes in the United States, we don’t find them preaching about contraception,” said Jon O’Brien of Catholics for Choice. “And it’s not as though in the Mass you have a question-and-answer period.”

      • February 10, 2025 at 9:20 am

I learned many years ago about the judgmental Catholic Church from my grandmother. She was one of five girls. Her mother died giving birth to her younger sister. My great-grandfather was a conductor on a train in El Paso and was unable to care for his children by himself, so they grew up in a Catholic Convent. When my grandmother wanted to marry my grandfather, she was excommunicated. She happened to be pregnant with my father. I never understood the hipocracy as a child and I don’t understand it now.

Honey, don’t you know that’s the entire reasoning BEHIND not liking birth control? When I was a teenager with my 1st boyfriend, I was afraid to take bc pills because if I did, it would mean that God saw me and I was being a slut. That’s what religion does, it fills you with guilt. So guess what? I ended up having unprotected sex because of that reasoning! Isn’t that absurd? But like I said, that’s what religion does.

Before we lose this thread, I want to say that IF the House does not pass the extension of the middle class tax cut and UE, the conversation in this country is going to change ABRUPTLY because PBO will once again be talking about jobs, jobs, jobs and championing the middle class. And he’s got a whole lot of damning footage from Boehner and other Repubs talking about the importance of a ONE YEAR extension. You got that right Jackie. PBO gives them enough rope to hang themselves. When it comes down to it, in these times most Americans are more concerned about the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits because it means money in their pockets. Money they can use to pay the rent, pay the bills, or do with it as they please. They won’t care about the BC mandate; but they’ll sure be up in arms when they see the GOP blocking their access to that badly needed financial relief.

The current flap over insurance coverage of birth control by insurers — specifically those who work as employees of the Catholic Church — has absolutely nothing to do with the religious freedom of Catholics. In fact, if anything, it is the Catholic Church that is attempting to violate the separation of church and state that is mandated by the First Amendment, not the government. They are attempting to carve out an exception for themselves in YOUR private insurance policy, and nothing more.

Rubio Shows The GOP Hand On The War On Women
    Posted by Zandar

MoJo’s Nick Baumann puts the various GOP birth control freakout stories in perspective as he catches “moderate” Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida dropping this bombshell of a bill: the “Religious Freedom Restoration Act.”

What does it do? Why, it ends birth control insurance coverage for women, of course.

Rubio has sold his proposal—introduced Jan. 31 as the “Religious Freedom Restoration Act,” or S. 2043—as a way to counter President Barack Obama’s controversial rule requiring even religiously affiliated schools and universities to offer copay-free birth control to their employees. But health care experts say that its implications could be far broader.
If passed, the bill would allow any institution or corporation to cut off birth control coverage simply by citing religious grounds. (You can read the bill here or in the DocumentCloud embed below.) It has 26 cosponsors in the Senate; a similar proposal sponsored by Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) has 148 cosponsors in the House. On Wednesday, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) vowed to repeal Obama’s rule, and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) pointed to Rubio’s bill as a potential model for doing so.

In English, this means that no entity has to cover birth control in a health plan if it can point to a religious reason for not doing so. And the entity itself is not required to have any religious affiliation. It could just be a plain old corporation. That means that if the middle-aged white guy who runs your company is religiously opposed to birth control, he can have it stripped out of your insurance plan—even if his Viagra is still covered. You could wake up the next morning and find you’re paying full price for drugs that you once got for free or at much-reduced prices.

Endgame. As I said earlier this morning, guess what the price of President Obama’s payroll tax cut extension will be?

So while they’re yukking it up on contraceptives, Mitty can’t talk about the economy at all. I Can’t Quite Put My Finger On It, But…
    by Zandar

MoJo’s Nick Baumann again does us an invaluable service by pointing out the obvious fact that President Obama’s “unprecedented assault on America’s religious freedoms” by requiring church-related hospitals and universities to cover contraception at the federal level has actually been on the books for, oh, about 12 years now.

    ………………………………………..

This fight has been long settled based on Title VII law. Clinton put it on the books on the way out without controversy, and it was on the books for every single day of the Bush 43 administration without controversy. It was on the books for three years under the Obama administration, without controversy. Nine out of ten businesses in the country, including religiously affiliated hospitals, schools, and charities, provided contraception coverage. 27 states went on to put similar provisions on their books without incident.

It wasn’t an issue at all until an African-American Democrat in the White House decided during an election year that “Hey, this is a good idea, let’s put this on the books for all 50 states” just after getting yet another monthly unemployment report that showed that his policies were starting to bring the jobs numbers back around, and that his prospects for re-election were improving along with that uptick on what basically everyone agreed up until that millisecond was the most important issue of the day, the economy itself.

Then, the existing rules of the game for the last dozen years changed literally overnight to fit the theory that the President was “declaring war on Americans’ religious freedoms.” Then the rules immediately changed to create “a firestorm of controversy”. Then the rules changed so that people questioned why Catholics in the Obama administration, including the Vice-President and the Secretary of Defense, hadn’t resigned in protest yet.

Glad the president will be speaking. This is another what I call “nine day wonder” like Jodi Kantor’s book. Look for many more between now and November. I wrote the President with my support yesterday, wrote Ed & Rachel and thanked them for what they did yesterday, and wrote Chris and Larry and TOLD them not to have any more doddering white males on talking about this situation, to have some WOMEN on.
We need to stay calm like PBO and not let every one of these controversies shake us up and expend our energy this way. As someone noted, this is only a controversy in the pundit-verse. The local news hardly deals with it. Our local paper hasn’t even written about it, and it is a far right rag.
This president is the one who signed the Lilly Ledbetter equal pay act…this president is the one who got DADT overturned….think about what he has done. He is NOT going to go against women. WE are his biggest supporters!!!
Whenever we’ve learned about decisions where he and VP Biden have disagreed, the President has been right: The Health care act…Biden didn’t want him to pursue this; Osama bin Laden, the VP didn’t want that to go ahead either, and I’m sure there are others.
Because the president LISTENS, people automatically assume he’s going to “cave” No, he LISTENS, this is why we elected him, and we Democrats certainly chose the right person among all those who put themselves up for choice!

    http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/_nv/more/section/archive?author=steve-benen

When the new Gallup numbers are released daily, I take note of the numbers for Obama and the Republican presidential candidates, but I also pay attention to the “U.S. Economic Confidence Index,” reflecting whether Americans believe the economy is improving or deteriorating. Yesterday’s Gallup report showed this figure reaching its best point in a year.

The president’s growing support, in other words, isn’t an accident — as Americans’ feelings about the economy improve, this clearly affects their attitudes about the president.

Also keep in mind that Congress’ approval rating is at the lowest point EVER!
