MITT “LET DETROIT GO BANKRUPT” CRITICIZES PRESIDENT OBAMA RESCUE OF AUTO INDUSTRY
Chutzpah, thy name is Mitt
By Steve Benen
——————————-
Even by Romney standards, this is twisted, and more than a little ridiculous. It’s almost as if he assumes voters are such hopeless fools, Americans will believe literally anything.
Obama for America spokesperson Frank Benenati said this morning, “Let’s get this straight — the very person who argued for the US auto industry to go bankrupt, something that would have caused more than a million jobs lost and utter economic devastation in the Midwest, is now trying to attack the President on how it was handled? This ad in Ohio is a new low for the Romney campaign.”
I’d add, by the way, that Romney might want to avoid lines of attack that involve closing businesses and laying off workers. Just saying.

/face palm
I’m not even sure what Mitt hopes to gain here.
Should we have let the auto industry go, and not only this guy but all others would have lost their dealerships???
I don’t get it. Why is Mitt even bringing attention to this?
And didn’t he try to take credit for the auto industry success?
WEIRD. He’s just WEIRD>
Lis Smith’s response:
OHIO’S FIRED UP!!
AND READY TO TO!!!
Oh I messed that up s/b READY TO GO!
Trying to understand Mitts new add on GM bailout and I am still scratching my head!
Wont link as it is at DK . . .
Does he think we are dumb?!?!?!?
SATSQ: Yes. The is, of course, the Republican belief. Voters are dumb.
And sometimes I think they are dumb. Bush reelected in ’04, 2010 sweep for tbagers, Romney in dead heat with the President, blaming Obama on this economy, and on the stalemate in government, even when they put all the t-baggers in the house who vowed such obstruction. So yeah, if they think the voters are dumb, well…
I guess this is sort of embarrassing.. .
Well now, who saved me a seat? I’ll accept the one that’s right up close to the podium, thanks.

Where’s the jobs/??
There’s your tweet, Df.
There you go!!
Handshake on the teamwork, Df. ;)
Forget the handshake…I’m a HUGGER:)
{{Desertflower}}!
Reminds me of having to train my son away from hugs and into handshakes when he was in early primary grades - he was too friendly they said.
RT’ed
Hello, TD. Good to see you!
that is the perfectly framed question, which every voter needs to keep fresh in their mind.
It is. It boggles my mind that GOP keeps repeating the same garbage about ‘job creators’ and the media doesn’t laugh them off the airwaves, and give listeners the facts to laugh in their faces.

Well… I decided to do it. So… TOD family, this is my first ever grassroots fundraising. I’ve set myself a modest (very) goal. I hope, with your help, I will be able to raise the stakes! Check it out here:
https://donate.barackobama.com/page/outreach/view/2012/ritafundraiser
And thanks! Even if you can’t donate at this time, I know that we’re all working very hard, in our own ways, to re-elect the President. It’s a great feeling to be a part of this community!
A really important study. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/08/01/1115671/-One-Damning-Report
I link to dKos, because when I linked to the actual study, it had a big picture of one of the authors, Tom Ridge!
That being said, this report says, in essence, businesses cannot thrive in this country until our infrastructure is repaired, restored and brought into the 21st century.
NOW!!!
Thanks Chips, for keeping me up to date with the streaming. Blessed day.
Hi TODers!
To follow up on the Ancestry.com story about POTUS possibly being linked to the “first” slave through his mother’s ancestry, Experts with The Root.com have looked at the claims. Link: http://www.theroot.com/views/account-obamas-slave-ancestry-misses-mark?wpisrc=root_lightbox
Though the idea has a nice poetic symmetry, I did not think Ancestry.com had really made a case for their claim. I thought the leap from Punch to Bunch was completely unsubstantiated. They go from the servant/slave John Punch to a young man who was sued named Bunch without actually establishing any kind of connection between the two. The Root experts question a more than that.
Yesterday while listening to Rush for my daily 30 seconds - he was all mad about this report because he says it was all dreamed up to give PBO “street cred” with the AA population. Rush angrily says “these people” will twist the research to deliver the results that they wanted - to “prove” PBO was just like everyone else. Amusing though this train of thought was, it was too exhausting to follow and my 30 seconds were up. Back to NPR.
PBO is telling about his conversation with the Olympians and he is hilarious!
Thanks for the heads up Chips. Totally lost track of time.
PBO is talking about the Romney tax plan and what it would do to middle class families that was linked by me and others on the last thread…must pass that around!!
PBO makes the point I have been waiting for. “He is asking you to pay more so people like him can get an extra tax cut.” YES!
YES! Direct connection to Romney is a stronger talking point. PBO is on fire!

US support for Rwanda wanes amid concern over violence in Congo
Washington signals shift in policy by cutting aid and rebuking Kagame administration for apparent support for rebels in DRC
Tom Malinowski, a former member of President Bill Clinton’s national security staff and now Washington director of Human Rights Watch, said Washington acted in the face of what it regarded as undeniable evidence.
“At no point in the last 18 years has the United States and Rwanda’s other allies responded as strongly to evidence of wrongdoing by the Kagame government,” he said. “At some point people get sick of being lied to. This administration, like past administrations, has gone out of its way to give the Rwanda government the benefit of the doubt and the ability to respond to critics when they’ve been charged with this kind of behaviour, and to explain themselves.
“But when the evidence is this clear and the government continues to categorically deny what the US government knows to be true, it’s very difficult to maintain patience. What we’re seeing now is patience dissolving.”
The report also accuses Rwanda of protecting an accused war criminal, Bosco Ntaganda, who heads M23 and was indicted by the international criminal court six years ago.
Malinowski, who was a state department official before working at the White House, said that for many years Kigali was given considerable leeway because western inaction at the beginning of the 1994 genocide had contributed to the slaughter of about 800,000 Tutsis. It also helped that Kagame is admired in Washington and London for leading the reconstruction of Rwanda and overseeing a thriving economy even if doubts crept in about his tight control of politics which left little space for real opposition.
But Malinowski said there was a growing belief within the US administration that Rwanda was using one crime to cover up another.
Whole story here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/aug/01/us-support-rwanda-wanes-congo
Wow, that was a short speech…
Short but very substantive.
I really like the way the President has tweaked the message in little itty-bitty ways to make it more ‘personal’ to Mansfield Park, Ohio. Have I ever said “I. LOVE. THISSSSSS. PRESIDENT?”
THIS:) That’s what I meant about connecting the dots now…he takes them by the hands and now they can walk beside him and see the vision and the alternative….amazing connection to his audiences….I am always enthralled when I hear him speak….
Painting an unmistakable picture in the hearts and minds of voters….they are beginning to connect the dots…..PBO was on fire!
Mail call! Today’s goodies from the campaign/DNC:
An Official 2012 Convention Kit from the Obama Victory Fund 2012; contains a poster suitable for placing in your window, a “Forward” bumper sticker, and three “O” dot stickers.
Oh, yeah — in yesterday’s mail I got a solicitation and bumper sticker from r’money. Fun, when I was a republican, they didn’t know my addr; now, I’m constantly getting stuff from them. Considering drizzling some melted chocolate on the bumper sticker and returning it to them. Think they’ll get the message?
:) :)
If it included a postage paid envelope, I would stuff all the solicitation info back in it, and send it to them. Make them pay for their own crap.
http://www.democracynow.org/2012/7/31/key_figures_in_salt_lake_olympic
On the campaign trail, Republican candidate Mitt Romney often touts his stewardship of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Utah, which he took over following a massive bribery scandal. In a series of new articles, longtime investigative reporter Wayne Barrett reveals Romney may have violated the new ethics rules he put in place. Today, Romney continues to accept campaign contributions from many key figures tied to the bribery scandal.
Good morning all!!!
So I came back to Greensboro, NC on the red-eye from LA yesterday night. So this morning as I was driving into work, I kep seeing all these police cars all over around the airport. And I was thinking, “What the heck is going on?!?” I even wondered to myself if the President was going to be in town today.
Then I pop over here to get my daily dose of cheer, and I see that our First Lady is going to be in town for a speech!!! I can’t believe I didn’t know about it til now :-(
So close…and yet so far…But how exciting!!!
Love our beautiful, smart, and wonderful First Lady!!!
SO COOL!!!!!!!!!
Some amusing tweets from Mansfield news site. like “I want a bronze statue of him” and “God, I’m in love with this president!” and then some snippy Repub tweets “While the Dems are busy with a love fest downtown, we’re knocking on doors”—-sounded real bitter about the “love fest” which he knows will never happen with his unlovable stiff candidate, horrible Willard.
GREAT!!! http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/top-two-percenters-to-congress-raise-our-taxes-please/2012/08/01/gJQAn5ACPX_blog.html
With the House set to vote today on dueling plans for the Bush tax cuts, a group of approximately 100 wealthy progressives — all of whom say they are in the top two percent of earners — have signed a letter calling on Congress to raise their taxes immediately.
Notably, the wealthy signatories make the case for higher taxes on themselves by supporting Obama’s “didn’t build that” case, arguing that the role of a smoothly functioning society in enabling their wealth more than justifies the demand that they chip in a bit more to ensure that it continues to provide opportunities to others.
The letter — which was organized by the liberal group Voices for Progress — was sent yesterday to lawmakers on the Hill, including the Congressional leadership in both parties. It will be released today at an event at which labor unions and liberal groups will announce a new mobilizing drive behind the Obama/Dem plan to end tax cuts for the top two percent.

I’m wondering how many Alawites make up the remaining Assad forces. That’s the only reason I can think of as to why the bulk of the army hasn’t defected to the FSA.
As a good friend notes at this link, likely not many, LL :)

I saw that. Very true.
And, for those who are interested, check Aleppo on wikimapia, focus on the ‘beltway,’ imagine having a vantage with full coverage of that logistics loop ….. you get the drift …. #PRESSON
Another OT:
Mau Mau verdict: Britain must undo its imperial amnesia
The case brought by elderly Kikuyu tortured in the Kenyan emergency allows a more honest account of Britain’s identity
Whatever the high court’s verdict, this landmark case asks larger questions of Britain, the answers to which go beyond apologies and monetary reparations. How should Britain and Britons deal with the (not all that distant) imperial past? From racial hierarchies to artificial national borders and a deeply inequitable economic system which enshrined as a core principle the devastating profiteering we see around us, imperial history still shapes all our lives within Britain and beyond.
Its legacies are unfortunately not all about railways, parliamentary democracy and the English language. In the Kenyan case, the building of the railway itself had grim consequences including mass displacement and thousands of “coolie” deaths. The creation of an English-speaking elite in India, which benefits a minority like me, still disadvantages millions. Can reparations really be made for what took place under colonial rule across Asia, Africa and the Caribbean or, indeed, closer to home in Ireland? How do you compensate people for the ways in which their circumstances have been shaped by stolen lands, enslaved or massacred ancestors, expropriated resources, imposed languages, forced labour, artificial national boundaries, geographical displacement, avoidable famines, discriminatory taxation or institutionalised racial hierarchies?
Entire commentary here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jul/31/mau-mau-britain-imperial-amnesia
This is important commentary. I tweeted it to almost all the accounts I follow.
George W. Bush gave an important speech, when he visited Africa. He gave it a Goree Island. There was almost NO commentary on it.
Romney is definitely losing his cover with the media. Top headline right now on the CNN business page is Romney Tax Plan Hits the Poor. Also states will favor rich and hurt middle class. http://money.cnn.com/2012/08/01/news/economy/romney-tax-plan/index.htm?iid=Lead
Wha??? The press may consist of hacks, but that makes them even more entitled. And when one of the 2 major pres candidates shuns them, they get pissed off.
I think that’s the source of their disdain for PBO. He never played their game the way McCain did, who openly courted them socially at his home. PBO knows they’re a bunch a tools and has strong boundaries and, though courteous, didn’t feel the need to hang out with them.
Yes, they can sure hold a grudge. I still remember how PO’d Arianna got from being a PBO punchline at the White House Correspondents dinner and how she got even with all the negative HuffPuff coverage after that. I’m glad it’s beginning to happen to Mitt at last.
Heads up for the First Lady, back in a while ;-)
