Greg Mitchell: ‘When Crybaby Interviewed the President’

****

Greg Mitchell: A lot of outrage, and not-so-gentle mockery, this morning over a classic Politico piece by editor Jim VandeHei and chief reporter Mike Allen complaining about President Obama manipulating the press….

So John Cook, editor of Gawker, just performed a public service by posting on Twitter every question Allen chose to ask President Bush when he did get full access back in 2008. You may remember 2008 - the economy was about to collapse and we were still in a full shooting war in Iraq …. these below catch the spirit. Keep in mind that Allen wrote today that Obama avoids Politico reporters in part because they “ask tough, unpredictable questions.”

Q: Now, Mr. President, you and the First Lady appeared on American Idol’s charity show, “Idol Gives Back.” And I wonder who do you think is going to win? Syesha, David Cook, or David Archuleta?

As someone pointed out the problem for these Beltway dweebs isn’t access it’s they don’t have a clue what to ask when they get access.

I just saw a tweet from one of my local news anchors saying he’s boarding a plane to DC to interview the President. This means POTUS is going LOCAL with the sequester argument. BRAVO. I love when POTUS does this.

The same media who facilitated the Iraq war, called the 2012 election wrong, enabled McCain & Graham to undermine and malign the National Security Team, and have generally allowed the GOP to propagate lies and propaganda (plus, held up and defended FOX “News” as a peer) have a lot of making up to do. They are worthless.

      February 19, 2025 at 12:38 pm

Tigergate is nothing more than the latest distraction to divert our eyes from the important issues we face.
High unemployment for example. And the GOP/MSM blocking anything to improve our economy.

Truly, sometimes I wonder if the WHPC has enough sense to try and create a ‘distraction to divert our eyes from the important issues we face’. Sometimes it seems to me that they go after the trivial and mundane BECAUSE that’s as ‘deep’ as they get. Saying they actually are trying to dupe voters almost gives them credit for thinking ahead, and nothing I have seen them do suggests that they think (beyond the moment).

One more comment on Hubris. We were lied to. MSM helped spread the lie.

The next chapter of Hubris could be: Who benefited from the Iraq/Afghanistan Wars?
Who makes money from 4,000+ deaths of USmilitary folks?
Who got richer from 100,000 + civilian deaths?
Who profits from 1 million+ refugees?

Remember the photos of pallets of US cash coming off trucks in Iraq?
If you make weapons, you probably liked the wars.
If you run drugs, you probably liked the wars.
If you supply private labor in War Zones, well, we know how you feel about ongoing conflicts.

Sure Bush/Cheney/Rice/Rumsfeld are evil, but they sure don’t stand alone.

Oh Vicki, don’t get me started! I was researching something that caused me to examine the Defense Budget and that sent me into research that blew my mind. The military was privatized during the Clinton administration (1996) and after that the defense budget exploded. Who makes money…name it…foodservice, contractors, uniform makers, security, weapons manufacturers, big pharma, auto makers to name a few. I’m not far from a military base, in fact I will greet a group coming home from Afghanistan on Thursday. The stories I hear about the money and the waste. A munitions officer (that may not be the title) told me weapons are constantly being inventoried even though that have crates of weapons that have never been opened…4 years old. I could go on, but it makes me blow a gasket.

By the way, this gives you some insight into why the Republicans defend Defense. Even with sequestration, their aim is to harm military families when they could clearly cut every dime from contractors, but privatization is a way to steer taxpayer monies to corporations.

The WHPC remind me of a line from My Fair Lady, wherein Professor Higgins is describing minds of women…..terrible for that, but apropos for the WHPC: “Their heads are full of cotton, hay and rags.”
They are the laziest people in the country I think. They do live in their own little bubble. Also, I believe their influence is waning. They just keep digging deeper and deeper holes for themselves. They truly need to examine themselves, so they can figure out why the president goes around them. This is THEIR fault. Until they get real, nothing will change for them. This example of the Politico interview with Bush explains everything. Of course, Bush couldn’t think any deeper than that interviewer either. This is how they got used to functioning for eight years. They still haven’t adjusted to this new intelligent president. They just keep showing themselves up more and more.
I have noticed that both CBS and ABC are doing some real work. Saw a serious interview Charlie Rose conducted about Adam Lanza and the new info about him. Not hype, just solid information. NBC is so in love with itself, they can’t do journalism. Sad.
I’m sure Jay will handle any of the stupid questions about golf and Tiger.

Jay Carney is in rare form today, cant wait until the press briefing is posted. “Carney says Obama has given 591 interviews since he took office”, Carney asked about what Obama thinks of access issues: He deputizes me to have that reaction.” ” Carney when I was covering GWB on his first trip he came to the back of the plane….. we didnt see him for 3 years after that.”

Exactly. He needs a break from the whole country. Four + years of non-stop PBO did this, said that, should have said that, if I were PBO I would have done this, said that, he’s responsible, he’s not acting responsibly, he should go to Chicago, oh look he’s going to Chicago because he wants a weekend in his actual house and dinner with his Chicago friends, what does he think of the bangs, why would he play golf with anyone but us, yada yada yada.

Yes, Mr. President, I’m happy you scheduled a quiet weekend, away from the whole country. I look forward to your doing it again. We’ll handle the so-called “press.” We support you a gazillion percent, sir!

the media job is now and have been to take down President obama from day one, paid for by big business, wall street and the republicans. It always been Obama vs the media, they lost 4 years ago, Hoping, praying they loose next 4 years,

  23. 73 Bill R.
    February 19, 2025 at 12:50 pm

President Obama has discovered what we all have discovered. The modern beltway media is not a news media but opinion media designed to entertain and promote the corporate agenda of their bosses. Being the smart man that he is, President Obama does not want to be filtered by a bunch of lazy scumbags who have no interest other than trying to take him down and create drama where there is none. So he goes directly to the people, and sometimes local media who are glad to talk with him.

    • 74 Liberal Librarian
      February 19, 2025 at 12:55 pm

And, I know I sound like a broken record, but people pay much more attention to local media than they do to CNN, MSNBC, or Fox. When PBO goes on local media, he not only knows that he’ll get targeted exposure, but also pertinent questions. They may be tough questions, but they’re not formulated merely to grab a headline.

      • 75 57andfemale
        February 19, 2025 at 2:22 pm

The Politico piece was disgusting. The notion that PBO only picks favorable interviews is a LIE. Call me crazy, but alleged ‘journalists’ shouldn’t lie. He’s been nailed with some disgusting questions from these smaller news outlets. The town hall last week was full of RWNJ’s. If anyone came anywhere close to talking to G. W. Bush that way, they’d be sent to Guantanamo.

        • 76 theo67
          February 19, 2025 at 3:10 pm

The difference is that local journalists ask actual questions intended to inform. And President Obama is prepared to answer those questions. The beltway media asks questions intended to misinform, spread GOP lies and conspiracy theories, and to “gotcha” the President. There are no answers that can satisfy that type of agenda - that’s the point. If the media want access, then they need to ask questions that don’t waste the President’s valuable time. Or ours.

          • 77 57andfemale

            February 19, 2025 at 6:14 pm

Didn’t the President recently do a CBS 60 minutes interview? Didn’t the President do an interview with GOP propagandist, David Gregory? I also remember the President being interviewed by NBC’s Brian Williams. Are these not members of the mainstream press. By the way, I think the President was interviewed by Bill O’Reiley. Can you imagine George W. Bush allowing Keith Olbermann to interview him? As David Letterman said, what else do they want from President Obama? Do the beltway media want the president to spend each and every day answering questions given to them by the Republicans?

To repeat what Theo said, the so called mainstream media are “worthless.” They are angry because, increasingly, more and more people are not paying attention to them.

    • 80 swbluega
      February 19, 2025 at 12:59 pm

“So he goes directly to the people…” get rid of the middle man. It’s more efficient and more to his benefit.

But bottom line, he is no longer depending on them to do their job.

      • 81 jacquelineoboomer
        February 19, 2025 at 4:00 pm

That’s right. Remember how nobody thought print media - newspapers and magazines - would ever go away? Well, look where that lack of insight and foresight got them. Now, the WHPC thinks they’re so dreadfully important to “take down” this wonderful President, and no one in that group had the insight to know a couple of things. First, nobody gets on the Internet every morning and says to herself, “Gee, I wonder what a member of the White House Press Corps wrote today about the President.” Nobody is in great anticipation of getting their news from the WHPC; the “corps” just think we are. Second, they weren’t paying attention, as we were, when President Obama asked us to stay involved with him in changing things in this country. He quoted the Hopi during the campaign (with a little assist from Maria Shriver!), “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” We citizens listened, we are much more involved because of THIS President and that “simple” reminder. Go away, WHPC and your “association.” You’re embarrassing yourselves. Turn their White House Press Briefing Room into a much-needed storage area. Jay Carney can deal directly with us, and/or foreign media!

I LOVE when Repubs and their stenographers think they’re playing ‘gotcha’ with this President, only to look like the vapid fools and liars that they are.

By all means, let’s revisit the stellar job done by the WHPC during the Bush/Cheney years. Let’s fill the next news cycle with evidence that Mike Allen wrote what Cheney told him to write instead of investigating that ramifications of lying us into war.

      • February 19, 2025 at 2:39 pm

“Politico reporters ask tough, unpredictable questions.”

Q: Now, Mr. President, you and the First Lady appeared on American Idol’s charity show, “Idol Gives Back.” And I wonder who do you think is going to win? Syesha, David Cook, or David Archuleta?

We need never read anything else, 57.

I’m enjoying the path down Memory Lane of Mike Allen’s career during the Bush years. And an opportunity for Jay Carney to rattle off statistics about how many interviews this President has granted. I’m just enjoying it immensely.

Let’s see: access to golf game vs. lying us into war.

Don’t see any Pulitzers for this hissy fit.

might be a good time for a little history lesson about GOPolitico. it was started completely from scratch in 2007 by the Allbritton family through the company they control completely, Albritton Communications. i remember how instantly they had access to every major tv show, and were immediately sponsoring several presidential debates, even though they had 2 significant blunders right when they started, yet still being treated as a reasonable journalistic enterprise.

    well, when you look through joe allbritton and his son robert’s history, you understand why. papa joe just died a few months ago and robert controls the organization now. this family goes way, way back with the bush family in houston where they were all very close friends, not just acquaintances. it’s known as fact that prescott bush, h.w.’s dad ran a bank that did “business” with despots around the world, most famously with hitler even after WWII had started. joe allbritton was happy to carry on the tradition when he bought riggs bank around 1980. guess what riggs then did over the next few decades? yep, money laundering for the world’s despots and dictators. all proven in court through a variety of cases (just the tip of the iceberg here with saudi royal family, and bush family best friends i might add, pinochet, and the regime in equatorial guinea, to name just a few);
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riggs_Bank#Scandals

joe allbritton was the OWNER of riggs bank all these years. not a manager. not a c.e.o. not simply a board member. the OWNER of this incredibly powerful and historic bank. joe had been a land developer in houston and owned a few small market tv stations and papers prior to OWNING this powerful washington d.c. bank. how does this happen?!? so after many losses in court and countless scandals over the years of the allbrittons OWNING riggs bank, they were forced to sell it to PNC in scandal, and 2 years later…politico is born! and they hire ronnie reagan’s errand boy of 30 years to be the president and c.e.o. of politico, which he still is currently. the allbrittons had fun playing the big money game for decades until they screwed up too many times, so then they decide to focus completely on the propaganda game instead now. it’s not an opinion to say politico is a republican propaganda mill…it’s a simple statement of fact proven by ample evidence. that’s why we articles such as this whiny screed so often there.

this is the world and people president obama is tackling head-on, in their faces. god bless him for having the bravery and smarts to succeed at it too. forward!!!

      president and c.e.o. of politico:
“Frederick J. Ryan, Jr. (also known as Fred Ryan, born April 12, 2025) was the post-Chief of Staff for former United States President Ronald Reagan (1989–1995), and currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. He is also the vice-chairman of Allbritton Communications Company and President and CEO of Politico.”
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Ryan

wonder how often politico discloses their possible conflicts of interest when they do their “reporting.” the albritton ties and this guy. i’ll take wild guess right now….never?

it just gets more crazy the more you click around. also from politico’s president and c.e.o. wiki page:

“He manages the [reagan] foundation and takes part in library events, with a mission of “preserving Ronald Reagan’s legacy.”[4]”

he’s doing that right now, simultaneously while being the president and c.e.o. of supposed “news” organization politico. this guy has ZERO background or training in journalism, or in running a business of any kind. he’s entire adult life has been in service of promoting republicans, mostly ronnie reagan, so how in any way could the allbrittons make a rational case that he’s the perfect man to lead a new “news” operation. you can’t, unless the real reason for being of politico is to promote republican ideas and politicians. that is the only rational way this guy being the president and c.e.o of politico makes any sense whatsoever.

The media never asks pertinent questions. When the Republicans are on whining about “entitlements”, why is it no one ever asks them why they didn’t fix them when they had a chance? Republicans had the House, Senate and White House in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. What did they do…they expanded Medicare with that costly pharmaceutical legislation…a bill they passed at 3 o’clock in the morning while America slept.

And another thing…I’m sick of Simpson and Bowles.

I listened to 5 minutes of Rush this noon and literally LOL’d at some of his nonsense about PBO’s speech this morning. Seriously, Rush must be off his meds again. First Rush said that PBO was LASHING OUT at Repubs who haven’t said or done ANYTHING critical or insulting to him, so why the hate? Then Rush said that PBO’s speech about all the sequester’s outcomes was LIBELOUS, accusing the Repubs of not CARING about Americans.

My biggest problem with listening to Rush is that he’s so BORING - it takes him five minutes to share a simple idea. He goes way off on tangents and repeats everything several times. But I do like to laugh, so it’s worth the 5 minutes on my way home to lunch occasionally.

I can’t laugh at Rush. He’s harmful to the psyche - both individually and the country as a whole. He’s offensive and derisive and insulting. I don’t even want to introduce Rush and his rantings into my consciousness - and I mute his voice whenever he’s played. My brain threatens to explode at that much hatefulness - I’ve learned that about myself.

No one agrees with me, but I think Democrats just need to go crazy just like them. President Obama should call a press conference and say, “you know what I completely agree with the Republicans about these cuts…what a great idea. When I met with Senator McCain and Cruz, we had a good old time. McCain apologized for Benghazi, Cruz begged my forgiveness for Hagel and we made up. The sequester will be over tomorrow. :)

It defies belief that someone so boring, so repetitive and so full of hate can go on year after year, bilking money from the network owners. He hitched himself to a now dying demographic and he will one day be considered a relic of history like Father McLaughlin.

    Good Morning TOD family

I just love hearing the Press is unhappy, PBO must be doing something right.

OFA is asking us to reach out to local media and I am eager to try. If anyone here has experience with media maybe you could offer advice or models we could use for Press releases and working with them.

I continue to be delighted by all the support we are getting from the new OFA. I was on the phone Saturday with Rahm Emanuel, yesterday with Selina El Amine and tomorrow it is Stephanie Cutter. I feel like a rock star here.

Dan Ashley, the excited reporter shown in the tweet above is my local anchor, we are on a roll.

Remember if you do a camera interview, they can make cuts and insert interviews with others that may have different view. Be clear, concise, try to tie in something personal. They love human interest. Our UPS guy called local paper about our very large pumpkin. We had it near the porch. Someone interviewed us and we showed him around garden and yard. The crab apples were also ripe and falling from trees and smelled so good. We have a large garden pond nearby. He did a nice wrote up. Evan sent the photographer out. We rolled the pumpkin back to the veggie garden and in front of the dried cornstalks and in among the vines where it grew. He was trying to show in his pic how big it was, so I suggested hubby kneel down and put his arm around it. They couldn’t reach around the pumpkin. We got one of dogs to sit by him, our beautiful Golden Bear. ;) This doesn’t have anything to do with politics, but the same principals apply. Make it personal. Let them see how things affect your everyday life. Let them see you as a regular Joe. ;) Be real. If you’re happy, let them see it or feel it in your writing. If you’re in pain, make them feel empathy. If you’re mad, be mad, but try not to use swear words. The biting tweet of Ben Labolt stuck the knife where it hurt the most. Have facts and figures to back things up. My short sting in the local paper about Republicans raising our gas tax by ten cents a gallon hit a nerve with someone in Cheyenne, WY. See Chips video post about Lawrence and he explains what I’m talking about. Everyone else was mad and had crazy things to say, like most RWNJ, but I’m the one that drew blood. Reporters, TV hosts, local papers, almost all have Facebook, email, Twitter, and more. Make a YouTube video. Use your talent and that of friends. Our high school high has a great media center for those interested students. Does a member of your group have a student interested in working on a project for school credit? Have local kids made memorials for the Children and Teachers from Newtown? I’ve seen a lot done for them on a FB page. I can give you the name if you want. I don’t remember the exact name, something Sandy Hook Memorial, but that’s not precise. I’m not a great writer. I have to take a lot of time to write something I think is good. If your Rep. or Senate is having a town hall, go, bring back-up. There are people who can’t go to these things, but they can call from home. We had an eighty-two year old woman make calls for our OFA.WY group during the day, and rest of us called in evening. That’s all for now. Getting sleepy.
