So is VAWA now a permanent law?

    • 37 jacquelineoboomer
      March 7, 2025 at 10:13 pm

Yes, amk, it’s a permanent law until somebody tries to repeal it, amend it, or SCOTUS thinks it’s a “gender entitlement.”

      • 39 utaustinliberal
        March 8, 2025 at 5:40 am

It’s not permanent in the raw definition of permanent because it has to be reauthorized in 2018 and will most likely include more expanded protections as needed.

        • 40 jacquelineoboomer
          March 8, 2025 at 2:56 pm

Thanks, ut. I was using mostly snark and didn’t think of the possibility of a re-authorization requirement until after I posted it. “Expanded protections” sounds good to me!

    • 41 utaustinliberal
      March 8, 2025 at 5:39 am

It’s permanent until 2018 when it has to be reauthorized again and will probably be expanded to include more protections as warranted.

would you expect anything less? I just love the timing federal court appearance. PBO leaked and time the hearing right after the Brennan cloture was invoked!!! Confirmed his CIA director, and now the next step to closing Gitmo….not a damn thing any senator can do about it, and I’m talking about Schumer too….. He flip flopped back in 2009 on putting KSM on trial in NYC

          March 7, 2025 at 8:56 pm

you & I had the same thoughts about the process & timing - remember the US has had the suspect in custody for more than 1 week (?).

the trial in NYC was also announced when no one can do anytihng drama about it since by the media reports court appearance is tommorrow.

once 1 person is tried in Fed court, PBO will have dared all those NBIY & he can go ahead and close GITMO.

this is what long-term planning looks like

THIS IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hold on, I’m going to save it right now….Okay, phew! Now where was I? Oh yeah, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have searched and searched for this picture. I don’t know what it is about it that touches me so deeply - the baby is so small and vulnerable, and President Obama is so protective and serious. I just can’t stop looking at it. I had just about given up hope of ever finding it. It is now with my other favorite PBO/child pix - the head rub, the little girl with the blue flower, the spiderman attack. These pictures just reveal the character of the man so clearly, and really bring tears to my eyes. Not a child picture, but the one of the elderly veteran struggling to stand does that too. Oh Holy Moly I was going to correct papers tonight, but I will just have to spend the rest evening drinking in my pictures. Chips, if I have never said it before, (I have), I say it now - you are Super Number One in my book, and Pamela, you are Super Number One A!

We have the best-est FIRST FAMILY when it comes to reaching out and enfolding everyone in each circumstance. This video is such a fitting segue to the POTUS nurturing that little one. I’ve said this before and I really believe it - there is going to be an entire new generation of voters who were turned on to politics because of the love of Michelle Obama and Barack Obama and so many of them will have had positive personal experiences to reminisce about.

    Chips,

I know you are busy but if you have some time, you could remind us about the high incidence of violence against women among the First Nations’ boundaries and how much of this was rarely prosecuted.

Specifically I do not know if you are able to add the video of the lady who cried while introducing PBO. The lady I am referring to is the First American victim of sexual violence who broke down while introducing PBO & POTUS had to come out early to hold her & help her not fall totally apart. Thanks

i highly recommend the new book by louise erdrich, titled ‘the round house’. excellent read, beautiful spare prose, gripping story of a woman and her family. tells the tale of an indian family’s coping after the mother is assaulted. anyone who has been concerned about native american women on reservation lands, and their vulnerability resulting from bizarre prosecution boundary laws, should read this book. anyone who loves good writing and a good story should read it too!

Funny enough I didn’t see it that way. I actually thought (given he did mess up back then - the times were different, after all) that it was heartening to see him stepping forward now to say it was a wrong move that needs to be corrected. Indeed, I’m not a fan of his, but I found the tone of the op-ed appropriate,

        //…
On March 27, DOMA will come before the Supreme Court, and the justices must decide whether it is consistent with the principles of a nation that honors freedom, equality and justice above all, and is therefore constitutional. As the president who signed the act into law, I have come to believe that DOMA is contrary to those principles and, in fact, incompatible with our Constitution.

    http://apnews.excite.com/article/20130307/DA4SI5780.html

US household wealth regains pre-recession peak

WASHINGTON (AP) - It took 5 1/2 years.

Surging stock prices and steady home-price increases have finally allowed Americans to regain the $16 trillion in wealth they lost to the Great Recession. The gains are helping support the economy and could lead to further spending and growth.

The recovered wealth - most of it from higher stock prices - has been flowing mainly to richer Americans. By contrast, middle class wealth is mostly in the form of home equity, which has risen much less.

Household wealth amounted to $66.1 trillion at the end of 2012, the Federal Reserve said Thursday. That was $1.2 trillion more than three months earlier and 98 percent of the pre-recession peak.

Further increases in stock and home prices this year mean that Americans’ net worth has since topped the pre-recession peak of $67.4 trillion, private economists say. Wealth had bottomed at $51.4 trillion in early 2009.

“It’s all but certain that we surpassed that peak in the first quarter,” said Aaron Smith, senior economist at Moody’s Analytics.

Household wealth, or net worth, reflects the value of assets like homes, stocks and bank accounts minus debts like mortgages and credit cards. National home prices have extended their gains this year. And the Standard & Poor’s 500 index, a broad gauge of the stock market, has surged 8 percent so far this year.

Now WHO’S fault is THIS??? :) :) The skinny guy with the funny name! Thank you!!!

Not any more, remember it blew down in that ice storm we had in January 2011…. It was actually an Italian black plum tree, and the lovely thing about it was every year it brought forth the mightiest, loveliest plums, so even if you had only a little money, there were masses of plums to eat, to freeze, to can, and the local fauna were very happy feeding in there all day and all night. Raccoons knew where to find the fruit, possums, (rats too), and they no longer come. No reason to.

My only quibble is that Cheney was acting President and ordered those igniter jets to prepare to take out the passenger plane. W was flying around in Air Force one sh-ting his pants. I remember reading about what Cheney was doing in that underground bunker in the WH.

      From the article…

The President’s legal authority to act in a situation like that isn’t the authority to use drones or the authority to use fighter jets; it’s the authority to use lethal military force…

OK trying verbatim: ..Anything can happen in this world….he’s doing a great job b/c he did take over a WH that was kinda half clean, bills wasn’t paid, doors were unlocked, cars weren’t running….He had to get things back in order, before he could actually put his plan together. So I feel so blessed that they gave him a 2nd opportunity, 2nd run…to keep this country floating in the right direction.

Kenya election is a nailbiter. The second place Odinga closed a double digit gap to within 5 points and front runner Kenyatta is just below 50% mark. Counting completed in 185/290 constituencies. If the winner doesn’t clear 50%+1 mark (the mittbot margin), there will be a run-off.

I just watched PBO with the Lakota sister in the vid above. I had to come on and mention that a RWNJ stated told me that PBO has no resolve, no passion, nothing about which he cares (except golf and vacations apparently) and, in watching this vid, I knew that this man had more resolve and passion than this winger’s beloved Rand. I know for a fact that the First Nations of Canada (Native Americans) have a huge love of President Obama. Surely with this, one can see why.

    • 206 majiir
      March 7, 2025 at 11:13 pm

Many American Indian tribal leaders have openly admitted that PBO is the best president they’ve ever dealt with, and that if he makes a promise to them, he keeps it. Many on the right know that GWB wasn’t good at his job, and they know he left the country in a devastated condition. I believe that in order for them to soothe their consciences, they have to ignore this and use a very common racial stereotype when they say anything about PBO-he’s lazy. In addition to this, they project onto PBO every quality that was definitely a part of GWB’s make up-a lack of resolve, no passion for anything except baseball, and whose main reason for wanting to be POTUS was to impress his father.

Great news!! I think EVERYONE needs to put this in their stores

    http://www.alternet.org/food/corporate-food-giants-have-reason-worry-some-very-brave-supermarkets-are-sharing-nutritional

The NuVal numbers are the brainchild of David L. Katz, M.D., MPH, an adjunct associate professor at the Yale School of Medicine. A dozen doctors and nutritionists, funded by the nonprofit Griffin Hospital in Derby, Conn., developed the scoring system, based on 30 factors including vitamins, fiber, salt, sugar, fat quality, protein quality, glycemic load, energy density and calories. From the public health evidence about those factors, they constructed an algorithm that processes the data into a single number. As new food science research is published, and as products are reformulated by their manufacturers, the algorithm and the individual scores are updated. (If that’s happened to any of the products I’ve mentioned, I’ll be glad to revise the numbers online.)

It’s a miracle that some 30 retail food chains are adopting the scores. You won’t find them at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s, and from the locations page of the NuVal website it looks like the only chain in my neck of the woods — Kroger, which in Los Angeles owns Ralphs and Food4Less — is running a “pilot program in select areas” (Kentucky, apparently). But Lunds and Byerley’s, which use NuVal, are venerable markets in Minnesota, as is King Cullen on Long Island, N.Y.; grocers in the NuVal fold aren’t just a bunch of crunchy hippies.
