However, the correct words are “this shouldn’t be about politics.” Unfortunately, for the GOP, that is exactly what it is all about. You can bet if there were a white GOP president in the WH right now, legislation would have been passed and signed months ago.

If there was a white GOP president in the WH right now, the press would have moved on already, and any idea of gun legislation would never have been presented. Remember, the assault weapons bad was allowed to expire under the last white GOP president.

Nicole Hockley, who introduced the president, is one of the most courageous women I’ve seen. I listened to her and watched her on 60 minutes, and my heart broke. To do this today, is totally amazing. These people are NOT going to let this issue die as it has in other times. They are determined. We will support them and the president, and all those fighting for this legislation.
I looked at the filibuster list, and the only thing I could see halfway good, was that only ONE of my senators is on that list. At least not both of them. Inhofe is a troglodyte. That group is really a rogues’ gallery.

    • April 8, 2025 at 8:24 pm

Couldn’t agree more Carolyn, Nicole Hockley is just an extraordinary woman. Her 60 Minutes interview was so hard to watch - I’d never dare to suggest it’s possible to understand what she and parents like her go through, but she made it so real you could almost feel her pain.

    • 38 Dudette
      April 8, 2025 at 8:25 pm

      Truth, Carolyn!!!

Although I wouldn’t have been surprised to see them on the list, I was relieved to see the two from Georgia weren’t on that list. Doesn’t matter, they’ll be solid “no’s” for any controls whatsoever. Crazy gun-hugging rednecks run this damned state.

Nicole Hockey has to be one of the most courageous women ever. I watched her last night on 60 Minutes, my heart broke as she spoke. These people are not going to let this issue die. They have the resources to keep this going, and the will. We will all support them and the President in this desperately important fight.
I looked at the list of the heartless rogues’ gallery of filibusterers…..well…..at least only one of my Senators is on that list…..totally embarrassing.
I wrote both of them last night, and will contact them again.

I SIMPLY MUST bring this post from our beautiful spirit HZ in the last thread. It’s so perfect!

“POB again gave America another piece of his beautiful heart. His core is centered on that ‘goodness of truth and what is right to do.’

We are so blessed to be living in this time with this great gift, our president. He is a man with a beautiful loving spirit; a brilliant mind; a calmness of spirit; a hardworking president; a man filled with compassion; a man who cares about others and how this journey is treating them along the way; and a president for All the people, no matter how much hate and evil remarks that are spoken against him daily. Those who bring on the obstruction in the Congress, certainly will see Karma visit them.

I love my president, and I will do all that I can to help him. He will always be the person that all of his friends and family will tell you that he is: A man with a core that is fixed on doing what is right to help others.

We support you, Mr. President. Chips has opened this place where we can discuss, share the intellect, spread the love, and most of all always show total respect to you, Mr. President. Thanks for sharing your beautiful spirit with the TOD Family. (((((((((( Blessings Always Go With You, Mr. President.)))))))))HZ”

Dudette, thank you my dear and special family member. I was crying my eyes out during our president’s speech in Hartford today. I could see that he had been tearful before he came out to speak, and the tears just opened the words from his heart to our ears.

I just kept saying out loud, speak through him thy spirit of faith. And I could tell that his heart was so heavy, and the power that is so much higher than any of us, spoke through this beautiful vessel again today. I feel that the beautiful ‘spirit of goodness knew that the Sandy Hook parents and all of the parents all over this nation wanted to hear again, this voice of sweet and gentle loving harmony that President Obama brings to us when we are hurting so much from these acts of awful violence.

I also want to thank Chips and all of the beautiful souls who help her each and everyday to keep us going with the lovely, open, intelligent, truthful, and respectful threads each and everyday on this beautiful haven, our TOD Family.

Filed under “our media is crap.” (from tail-end of last thread, as usual)

On the last thread, Bill reasonably asked which 15 senators threaten to filibuster background check legislation.

Seemed like a simple request, but noooooooo.

    FL Marco Rubio

    ID Mike Crapo

    IN Dan Coats

    KS Jerry Moran
    KS Pat Roberts

    KY Mitch McConnell
    KY Rand Paul

    NC Richard Burr

    OK Jim Inhofe

    TX Ted Cruz

    UT Mike Lee

    WI Ron Johnson

    WY Mike Enzi

That’s only 13 names, but my journo twitter feed announcing “and McConnell makes 15″ included no links.

And now the Politico article that I got these 13 names has apparently been taken down (and I closed that site, so no URL).

We’re just supposed their word for it.

Why don’t the news sites have a link to a list of Senators threatening filibuster so that voters can easily spot whether their elected official is thwarting #TheyDeserveAVote?

Media has plenty of time to cover HILLARY 2016! or OBAMA SEXIST! or Fox News Reporter Could Go to Jail For Withholding Sources!
but have NO time to provide actual information that citizens can use.

Congresscritters and Senators are not the only ones who deserve to have their pay withheld.

Journalists should be docked pay for contributing only to non-stories.

I went to go see Olympus Has Fallen the weekend. Wanted to support Antoine Fuqua, but that was really hard to watch. It was way over the top (unnecessarily so, in my opinion) violent. I kept thinking something like that could happen in real life and reminding myself that our First Family is well-protected. Plus it didn’t help that most of my immediate family was in DC this weekend on a spring break road trip. I’ve had nightmares two nights straight since seeing the film. It was a mistake to go. I’m too squeamish.

OFA Facebook push on background checks targets these 11 Senators (10 Republicans, 1 Dem)

    AZ Jeff Flake

    GA Saxby Chambliss
    GA Johnny Isakson

    IN Dan Coats

    IA Chuck Grassley

    ME Susan Collins

    NV Max Heller

    NH Kelly Ayotte

    NM Martin Heinrich

    OH Rob Portman

    TX Ted Cruz

Martin Heinrich (New Mexico) appears to be the only Dem.

I’ve posted tweets on Heinrich here before (if you’re interested in seeing a photo of the Senator, click on the “pic” link if no white twitter box):

    • April 8, 2025 at 9:26 pm

I emailed Chambliss and Isakson earlier today. This is the response I received from Isakson:

      ———-
” I support the Second Amendment right of all law-abiding citizens to defend themselves and their families. I firmly believe that we do not need more gun control in America; rather we need more criminal control. To that end, I support instant background checks on the commercial purchase of all guns to prevent convicted felons from obtaining them, but I do not support waiting periods or the registration of any firearm. As many of these issues reemerge in the 113th Congress, I will work for common-sense legislation that keeps our children safe without infringing upon our Second Amendment rights. ”

      ———-

Have not gotten a response from Chambliss as of yet.

You all understand why I get so angry and frustrated when people (who should know better) express skepticism and mistrust of my President on Twitter, blogs, anywhere. Why would this man deliberately push policies that hurt the most vulnerable among us?

The people accusing him of cutting SS need to look at this speech and do some damn soul searching as to why they are inclined to believe media reports of PBO hurting the vulnerable.

Hopefruit, I am with you 100%! I am sick and tired of people questioning President Obama’s commitment to “the most vulnerable among us.” People refuse to face reality! The President has to deal with a Republican dominated Congress. He can’t get anything done unless he finds some creative ways to compromise with Republicans, but at the same time protect the interests of the poor and the middle class. That’s exactly what he is doing! Purity progressives talk a big game but they haven’t shown me how they intend to make progress in the current reality in Congress.

This is similar to a tweet I sent this morning, but it captures the real problem. The GOP can only win if good people give up. It happened to some degree in 2010. We can’t allow it to happen in 2014 or where there are elections this year. We have local elections in Illinois tomorrow. These are typically low turnout elections but I will do my best to make sure no GOPers win any office.

Nath, when you get here from westcoast timezone, I didn’t forget your comment quite a few threads ago. I forgot to bookmark it so when I have a moment I can respond. Can you help an overworked person & let me know which post it was — this was about 2nd amendement fab comment you had & you were curious about my opinion. It started w/ my enjoyment of yours & Bobfr’s back & forth conversation. Bobfr, Hugs! Hugs to you too Donna!

Hey, Gazelle! Great to hear from you. Soory you’ve been working so hard. Thanks for kind words about my comment. I feel bad because I cannot remember the thread where I made the comment you are interested in. May be the incredible Bobfr remembers it. If I am not mistaken, the only comment of mine that I remember asking your opinion was about using Section 2 of the 14th Amendment to counter voter suppression laws. But then again it might have been about the 2nd Amendment because I am not totally sold that it guarantees individuals the right to own guns — especially military style assault weapons. I’ve actually embarked on a mission to study the genesis and the rationale for the 2nd Amendment. I especially want to know what the drafters of the 2nd Amendment had in mind, when they premised or conditioned “the right of people to keep and bear arms” on the necessity of “A well regulated militia.” This will take some time, but I will definitely share with you my tentative findings.

Rest well! You need it after along day.

Nah, Hopef. It’s been coming a while now with little bits here and there. The same process was evidenced in Bobfr. The shell cracks open one day and we’re not sure we heard correctly, so we other villagers blink and carry on. A few hours/days later another piece breaks free, and we turn our heads and look at it carefully, surprised by what we see/hear, but still think it’s an anomaly and maybe we are mistaken. Then one day …CR-A-A-A-ACCK! The whole new chip-a-ram bursts forth - and the rest of us fall backwards in consternation! Of course, I haven’t decided yet if they learnt at the feet of the wimmin ‘master’ or the ‘min’ master, or both! [I confess it’s fun though to see how people in TOD Village learn - from writing blogs to writing letters to congressmen to saying what we think or not saying but ‘showing’ what we REALLY think.] This is an awesome LEARNING place to hang out! You’ve birthed a weally, weally gud place, Chips Chica!

LadyH, you have to pass that suggestion on and hope it somehow falls on caring ears. Anyone game? Pick the station you favour, or create your own tweet but send them the thought. If enough wheels squeak a little bit of oil might just trickle in their direction. :???:

Despite the glitchy nature of tweets today, I’m posting this NATO tweet because I thought it was an odd photo for NATO to send.

(I swear I’m not prejudiced against Scandinavians, the picture just struck me as funny. Please don’t ban me from the site.)

Yes He was, Fay! He really poured his soul! Haters can hate all they want, but we elected a great man as our president. Everyday, I am grateful that the majority of American voters rejected haters and elected him twice as our President.

Just thinking about the difficuty in getting a vote on what should be so obvious. It feels to me, like we are in the process of purging the poison out of the body politic. This is a painful process. People hoped the Civil War cleansed it, but it just went underground. It arose with Jim Crow. Then, people hope it was cleansed with the Civil Rights legislation and action, but it went underground. I’m sure some on this blog knew of the hate and poison boiling underground, but many of us in safe little places did not know. Since the election of President Obama it has exploded in full fury. I” have a clear feeling that he knew at least some of what would explode after festering. I do not believe he is surprised.
I do not like all this, but I keep thinking what Justice Brandeis said: Sunlight is the best disinfectant. The process is painful…..just like cleaning a physical wound is painful.
But, I saw the sign one of the Newtown parents carried on to Air Force One…..”Love Wins” Wow! If that woman could say that, it is up to us who love the president and our country to make sure this happens.
Every Sunday our pastor talks about the power of love. He prays the same prayer at the close of every service…..”Pray for peace, work for peace, wage a little peace, and love one another, EVERY SINGLE OTHER” We say that last phrase together. My husband asked…”Do I have to love GWB?” We asked the pastor, he laughed, and said his wife refuses to say that phrase because she knows she can’t love every single other. That’s our human reaction. But, I do believe that in the long run, love does win. That is all that can change hearts and minds, not arguments, not reasoning,…….I have felt love on this blog ever since I started reading, and that is what has held me here. I find this unusual in a group of people who do not know each other personally, but are united in one purpose. I see and feel here the power of love. I believe we can spread this.

Carolyn, that was beautifully stated and I agree with every word. The dark underbelly of racist American has been revealed in all its disgusting depths since PBO was elected. It’s shocking and deeply disturbing. I hope and pray that seeing all this ugliness out in the open will open the minds of decent people to the fact that this racist poison will kill this country if we don’t act.
Love is more powerful than hate and it’s also much, much harder. So easy to think that someone else is “lesser” and more worthy of contempt than you are. So hard to see the goodness in people (no matter how hidden) and love them despite themselves.

I love TOD because it concentrates on what matters to people - as does President Obama. While the blogosphere is talking about a Prime Minister the UK could well have done without (just ask the Scots about the poverty they endured at that time) - TOD is caring about those who have been so harmed by the GOP dependence on violent weapons.

I also love TOD because - Manchester United - just as a minor secondary thing.

Do Man United fans lean towards either Labour or the Tories? I heard today Liverpool fans are very anti-Thatcher.

      • 185 99ts
        April 8, 2025 at 10:05 pm

I cannot imagine that anyone from Manchester would be a Torrie Fan - real people play football & most would be very anti-Thatcher - the tories play rugby

      • April 8, 2025 at 10:14 pm

United fans definitely lefties - and also, oddly, quite anti-England. But that’s a common trait among northern clubs, who wouldn’t be overly-fond of ‘the south’, where all the power and wealth lies.

And Alex Ferguson is a complete leftie, former union man, Labour supporter, etc. Although, very rich!

The President was absolutely brillant today and made an absolutely wonderful, impassioned speech today. I was beginning to think that gun safety was dead. I believe with all the Whitehouse efforts this week including Flotus there just might be a chance to shame these 10/11 Republicans to back down and allow a vote.

They have no excuses as why the new laws should not be inacted. So they fillabuster to try and skirt the issue.

Hello, TOD…..thank you, Chips for the video of yet another powerful speech from our President.
I just feel the pain for everyone who has been affected by gun violence. It could be any one of us, if this is allowed to continue and we dare forget.

As the day ones to an end, I would like to share something positive that on this day in 1974, Henry “Hank” Aaron sets Major home run record.
    Back to study…..
I took a break and surprisingly ran into Miss Pat on this beautiful day……sad for the families their lives will never be the same.
