Michael Cohen (The Guardian): What makes the Republican position on Medicaid expansion truly sick - In their ideological vendetta against Obamacare, red states seem more willing to let low-income people die than get healthcare

If you want to get a sense of the enfeebled and wanton state of the modern Republican party, there really is no better place to start than on the issue of Medicaid, the federal program that provides healthcare coverage for the poor.

In a desperate effort to undermine the law they hate, Obamacare, Republican governors and state legislatures in half the states have either rejected or intend to reject a key part of the president’s signature domestic initiative – namely, billions in federal dollars to extend Medicaid coverage to their poorest citizens. While Republicans argue they are acting out of high-minded fiscal rectitude, the reality speaks to something else altogether - petulance and hyper-partisanship.

…. Republicans are searching for ways to rehabilitate their image. It ain’t gonna be easy so long as they operate as though saving money – and keeping their ideological purity intact – is more important than reducing suffering and saving lives.

Jonathan Cohn (New Republic): If you want to know why we can’t have an honest debate about Obamacare, all you have to do is pay attention to some recent news from California - and the way a highly distorted version of it, by one irresponsible writer, has rippled through the conservative press.

Michael Hastings provided endless comedy on Twitter today while desperately trying to sell his book to Greenwald Groupies.

(Yes, it’s a Koch/BuzzFeed special - GOPolitico old-boy/shill Ben Smith was so impressed with his work at Rolling Stones and assorted publications he reckoned he was a perfect fit for his Koch project)

So, Hastings thinks AG Eric Holder = Rumsfeld.

Seriously.

As Oliver Willis put it:

PS Hastings should probably try to educate himself on Rumsfeld’s ‘achievements’ and those of his pals in the GWB administration - his partner might be able to help him, after all, she served under GWB, was the speechwriter for Condoleezza Rice and after joining the National Security Council, worked on press and communications strategy for ….. Afghanistan and Iraq.

It’s not Hastings’ fault, of course, who his partner worked for.

But it’s Obama’s FAULT!!!!

NPR: Rebuffing President Barack Obama’s latest plea, House Republicans on Monday proposed keeping open the military-run prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, by barring the administration from transferring its terror suspects to the United States or a foreign country such as Yemen.

WSJ: Government projections show that in September, for the first time in almost two decades, the U.S. will produce more oil than it imports. Nor will that be a fluke; the trend is expected to continue, and domestic oil production is expected to outstrip imports by an increasingly wide margin

So, here we are, Bradley Manning, Hero™

MSNBC: …. During the government’s opening argument, Captain Joe Morrow issued a blistering indictment of the 25-year-old—on trial for larceny, aiding the enemy, and violating the Espionage Act, among other charges. Morrow said that this case is about what happens when “arrogance meets access to sensitive information,” and that Manning put his fellow soldiers at risk when he used his military training “to gain the notoriety he craved”…

…. Morrow showed a log from Manning’s personal computer on May 11, 2010, showing that he downloaded a database with the personal information of every service member in Iraq - more than 74,000 in total. Morrow said that the government will show that by downloading this information, and turning it over for public release, Manning was providing foreign intelligence services with an effective phone book. He also cited communication found during the raid that killed bin Laden, in which the al-Qaida leader asked for this database.

Manning knew that the enemy would access this information, said Morrow…..

We can only assume, none of the Greenwald Groupies had family serving in Iraq.

UT, thank you endlessly again for today’s post on AG Holder, it was utterly brilliant.

Looking back, it feels so good to remember how wrong the so called media pundits were about President Obama. They said he couldn’t be nominated by the Democratic Party, and he was. They said he couldn’t be elected President of the United States, and he was. And they said he couldn’t be re-elected and he was. I think part of their belligerence and hatred of the President has a great deal to do with the fact that the majority of Americans do not take them seriously.

On the Kudlow Report (CNBC) John Harwood just brought up David Plouffe’s tweet as an example of the WH being nervous and going after Issa. He made no mention of Issa calling Jay Carney a “paid liar” and that Plouffe’s tweet was a response. I become more disgusted with the MSM everyday.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m not prone to conspiracy theories (i.e., Occam’s Razor [simplest explanation with fewest assumption is the best explanation]), but I searched WaPo’s Tom Toles archives, and there’s a gap between Jan 4, 2026 through August 23, 2008.

And IRAQ is not one of the categories. Gosh, what was THE U.S. story 2003 through mid-2008????

John Harwood is a two bit journalists, any we know these two bit journalists suppose to be mad with the WH so all they are doing is spreading B.S. The WH didn’t go after Issa, Issa have been after the WH for many years, spreading lies and if Harwood was any kind of journalists he would tell both side and not pick a side. I’m proud of David Plouffe and what he tweeted. What Plouffe said was the truth, what Issa says are lies, someone need to remind Harwood of that.

I agree with you anniebella…Issa called Jay Carney a “paid liar”. Issa started and Plouffe finished it…”Chicago style”. I love it!

        • 28 nathkatun7
          June 4, 2025 at 12:11 am

Sorry, Issa had absolutely no basis for calling Jay Carney a “paid liar.” However David Plouffe’s tweet was absolutely based on facts. Issa was indicted for “grand theft auto.” He was also suspected of setting fire for insurance fraud. This is not at all about the so called “Chicago style.”

So my old buddy Mona showed her racist colors today, huh?

After she visited here, she tweeted this:

Her assumption that I write here is one of the nicest compliments I’ve gotten in a while.

Here’s the scoop: I used to hang out at The Guardian when Michael Tomasky blogged there. There was a group of us that got to know each other there - Republicans, emos, blue dogs. I was the lone Obamabot in the group. Then Tomasky left and after awhile Greenwald showed up. So I kept hanging out there. The regular emos were THRILLED that GG was posting there. But after awhile - between Glenn’s shenanigans and the idiot ruthlessness of his sycophants like Mona - even the emos couldn’t take it anymore and abandoned ship.

Needless to say, I had a few run-ins with Mona. Even the emos who were pissed at me for being an Obamabot were offended by how she handled those confrontations. She’s a real piece of work!

    • June 3, 2025 at 8:19 pm

Ooooh SmartyPants, that’s very interesting, I wondered who this creature was. So, she has a quite a history, then?

I’d hazard a guess she’s the type who would scream ‘race card’ at every turn, and then when she tweets about the President and AG Holder she feels it’s essential that she mention their skin color. It appears to be an increasingly common denominator among Greenwald Groupies.

Thanks a million for the info SmartyPants, and thank you for all you do.

      • 84 Smartypants (@Smartypants32)
        June 3, 2025 at 8:36 pm

One time the discussion in one of GG’s threads was about how bad people of color are suffering under an Obama administration. I asked why the vast majority of people of color supported PBO. Mona said the people who support him are “uninformed.”

Such typical white privilege to think that the “great white hope” needs to educate those poor uninformed people of color. But that’s how she - and her BFF Glenn - roll.

        • June 3, 2025 at 8:41 pm

    WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN TO MANNING…

    THIS IS WHAT WEINSTEIN THINKS….

just think how this would have turned out if Manning were of the Muslim faith…I think giving government secrets to the enemy during a time of war is Treason…

    • June 3, 2025 at 8:37 pm

Surprised by SW on this. It’s not as if Manning has been in prison for 20 years - he was arrested in May 2010. The guy releases the personal information of every member of the military in Iraq, people who had absolutely nothing to do with America being there, and he should be released now? Hmm. Dunno. Although, it’s pretty obvious he was screwed up and manipulated by Assange and his crew. But, no, I’d give some more time in prison.

    • 93 meta
      June 3, 2025 at 8:39 pm

I totally disagree with him. Manning did some very dangerous stuff, including aiding and abetting the enemy in a time of war. He deserves the punishment.

    • 94 hopefruit2
      June 3, 2025 at 8:46 pm

Sorry Steve, but too many of you want to treat Manning as if he were a 12-yr old playing a “ring-the-doorbell-and-run” prank and not a 25-yr old adult who has knowingly broken the law and in doing so has endangered the welfare of others. Chips I agree with you that 3 yrs in jail is not “too long” considering the gravity of what he did.

    • 95 Bobfr (@Our4thEstate)
      June 3, 2025 at 8:53 pm

What Mr Manning may be shown, beyond all reasonable doubt, to have accomplished is aiding the enemy during war time. If so, duration of jail time is the least of his problems. They shoot folk for that type of crime.
