Latino Uninsured Rate Plunges. Thanks, ObamaCare

Noam Levey: Number Of Latinos With Insurance Coverage Surges Under Healthcare Law

The federal healthcare law has dramatically increased coverage among Latinos, according to a new report that provides a comprehensive look at the effects of the Affordable Care Act on a historically underinsured community. Overall, the percentage of Latinos ages 19 to 64 lacking health coverage fell from 36% to 23% between summer 2013 and spring 2014. That parallels a broader increase in coverage that has taken place since insurance marketplaces opened last fall and states began expanding Medicaid under the healthcare law.

The overall uninsured rate for U.S. adults under 65 plummeted from 20% to 15% in the same period, according to the Commonwealth Fund, a nonprofit group that studies U.S. and global health systems. Other surveys have shown similar declines. “The Affordable Care Act appears to be working for millions of Latinos who, as a group, have long faced the nation’s highest uninsured rates,” said the Commonwealth Fund’s Michelle Doty, the report’s lead author. “These substantial improvements will mean better health and healthcare for millions of people.” The Medicaid expansion proved particularly important for Latinos, the Commonwealth Fund report indicates. In states that expanded Medicaid, including California, the uninsured rate among working-age Latino adults dropped by about half, from 35% to 17%.

Me too LL, I’ve never heard a negative thing about Clapton. I’m not going to say I didn’t enjoy some of his music, because I did, but this is like a kick to the nads. How can people be filled with so much venom towards their fellow man?

Wait, wait, wait! I just get a Wiki page, nothing about immigration…that was on my phone, now I’ll check on the computer…BUT, ANYONE can put things on Wikipedia and it doesn’t necessarily have to be true..that’s why you can’t use that site on papers…it may not be factual. So, I would ignore this if I were you….

                  I don’t know LL, I found this WSJ article…
On “Old Sock,” he eases in as vocalist, and it’s no surprise he admires Lee and Billie Holiday, singers who worked behind the beat. “My philosophy of singing is: ‘Never mind the gymnastics. Carry the melody.'”

This weekend’s concerts to benefit the Crossroads Centre will be the fourth round in an unexpected, triennial series: In 2004, the inaugural show was held in Dallas; the next two outside of Chicago. Jeff Beck, Gary Clark Jr., Robert Cray, B.B. King and Buddy Guy are among the gaggle of guitarists scheduled to perform this time around.

I hope so. But his tirade in 76 is multiply attested, as is his continued defense of Enoch Powell, who is basically the intellectual godfather of the BNP, which is the UK’s “kick out all the immigrants” party.

Which reiterates the point that just because someone is an amazing artist, he can also be a less than stellar human being. (Ezra Pound comes to mind.)

Nerdy, this is great information that I’m going to distribute at our Salsa the Vote event next Sunday. I can’t thank you enough for ferreting out all these great facts about Obamacare. People are abysmally ignorant about how effective this law is. Got back from canvassing for Wolf and our local candidates. On the whole I would say there’s a reasonable level of awareness of this election and a strong feeling, especially on the part of teachers, that Corbett must go. One comical thing we kept encountering-a write in candidate for state rep decided that extra large signs were the way to campaign, so once in a while we would run across a four feet high red sign with this woman’s name on someone’s lawn. Talking about screaming out your message.

Those guys need a boost and we sure could use them in the House. As for stomping around, I found it very tiring, but for once my back didn’t act up, so I was very grateful for that. REPORT: I spent a few hours volunteering at the Charlie Christ headquarters this morning/afternoon. Made calls to local residents asking them to vote for Charlie. Many folks were not home, but I left message asking for their vote and reminding them to come out and vote on Nov. 4. Most of the few I reached, said they would vote for Charlie. Of course, there was some who said no. Listening to another volunteer talk to a voter: The voter stated she was not sure about Charlie. The volunteer asked did she have questions. Voter asked who is Charlie Crist? She knew of him (but really she was asking for his positions and then asked what was the difference) and promptly another volunteer reached across another table where I was sitting and handed (the volunteer on the phone) Charlie’s positions. After telling the voter the difference between Charlie and Scott, the voter said she would be voting. Volunteer told her where her polling place is, asked if she needed a ride. She said no. She was going to vote today.

Tomorrow, a bunch of us will meet at 7:45 a.m. at the HQ to car pool and go to Souls to the Polls. More than likely, I will be casting my vote tomorrow.

In the waning days as Nov. 4 approaches, I will also be doing some canvassing.

I really hope we do this.

    http://thinkprogress.org/election/2014/10/25/3584535/texas-immigration-cornyn-compromise/

For the last twelve years he’s been in office, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has resisted efforts to bring citizenship to the 11 million undocumented people living in the United States. He’s voted to militarize the southern border, has opposed the federal DREAM Act, and once sponsored a bill to more quickly deport Central American children.
So when it comes to the upcoming election for his Senate seat, it might not seem like Cornyn is the ideal choice for progressive Texans who want comprehensive immigration reform. But after a debate Friday night between Cornyn and his Democratic opponent Dr. David Alameel, some Latino leaders told ThinkProgress that they would be voting for Cornyn anyway.
“I have never voted for [Cornyn], but this time I’m going to, because we have no choice,” said Rene Martinez, a district director for the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and staunch supporter of progressive immigration reform. “Alameel doesn’t have a chance, so I’d rather be standing right behind [Cornyn], and have him turn to people like us for advice.”

Fox News admitted on Tuesday that a conservative-led lawsuit against the Affordable Care Act would raise health care premiums for millions of Americans. But then in its on-screen chyron, the network sought to attribute the increases not to the litigants involved in the case, but to President Obama, potentially confusing viewers.

Early voted this afternoon and was somewhat upset that there was barely anyone there voting. I made a comment to the nice gentlemen who helped me to my voting booth and he said oh no….this place was packed on Thursday and Friday so that made me feel a lot better. He said that it had been a steady flow all day today but that people rushed to vote on the 1st and 2nd days of early voting and they did in big numbers.:)

Then I went into the campaign office and made 112 calls. It goes really fast because most of the calls go to voice mail, or are non-working or wrong numbers. These are now GOTV calls so the people who did answer were 7 very supportive and will be voting for democrats, 1 who refused to say who she was voting for and two hang ups. Not bad for 10 days out.

Please consider volunteering with your local Democratic Party. They really can use your help. There are many ways you can help. Data entry is needed as well as phone banking. Also, remember that those volunteers could use bottle water, a nice salad a pizza or fruit. Some of them are there for hours making those calls.

Oh, another little note today from Christ HQ. We were talking about media. I was telling the folks there about TOD and our support for PBO. The volunteers talked about how 2010 was brutal and we can’t afford to have a repeat in 2014. I mentioned Ed Shultz. One volunteer said she does not watch him any more. She and another talked about the negativity that spews from Chris Matthews daily. They talked about how smart PBO is, how they trust him because he is always a step ahead. They talked about how he never gets credits for stuff, but how he quietly does things and it shuts up the critics. I told them I call it the Boomerang effect.

One of the other ladies said, it is almost as if the MSM is trying to discourage us from voting. I invited them to checkout TOD.

These women were well informed and on top of what is going on around the country in other states.

When I asked how they thought we were looking as far as Crist winning, the woman who mans the office daily (along with her daughter) said she believes Crist will win it. She said we could take more than the Florida governorship if we voted in mass number. I told her again: Yes. We vote, We win!!

Throughout the morning/afternoon, people trickled in, some to volunteer, some to pick up yard signs, etc.

The woman who runs the Democratic Women’s group here is a pistol.

Anywhoo, I hope we kick out a as many GOP as we can. They are really bad for the country.

    http://www.politicususa.com/2014/10/25/pillage-plunder-republican-leadership-150000-homeless-detroit.html

Republicans absolutely love free, unregulated capitalism.

And why wouldn’t they? In the absence of regulation, millionaires and corporations are free to exploit the working class for their own personal benefit. With no set regulations in place, those at the top of the societal pyramid are free to do as they will with their accumulated wealth, including using their vast fortunes to provide themselves with even more money, even if others have to suffer for them to do so. In a country where the richest 1% of Americans have captured 95% of the post-financial crisis growth since 2009, there have been limitless opportunities for them to add to their newly added wealth at the expense of other, less financially stable citizens.

Nowhere has this model been more apparent than the city of Detroit.

“…majority of people in Austin, Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio must have the right to decide if they want to remain in the United States…”

I suspect the majority would want to stay, in those major cities and throughout Texas. It’s just a relatively few nutballs who are talking secession and making all the noise [empty wagons]. *They* should just go ahead and renounce their citizenship — and all the benefits of being a U.S. citizen — and find another country [maybe Russia] that would allow them to colonize, similar to the establishment of Liberia.

In an hour and 20 minutes I shall be going home, having leftover Popeye’s chicken, and crashing. I feel a bit off after my flu shot yesterday.

So I early voted today and it was 17 pages with multiple candidates on each page but most of it was judges for Cook County, none of which I know since I’m not an attorney or a criminal.:) Almost all the Chicago/Illinois Dem incumbents were running unopposed. The only one that had any real close opponent was the guy at the top of the ticket, Governor Quinn. Every Democratic candidate was listed first; I’m assuming it was because they were the incumbent but I don’t recall that in 2012.

I tried to volunteer for Quinn today but got some bad information on location and ended up not being able to do much. I’ll get out again next weekend.

excellent tweet, swbluega! This is the question that must be answered by people who advocate/promote the stupid idea that not voting somehow sends a powerful message to the two political parties.

I’m really curious to know where the hell she got these “worsening” projections from - because methinks this is a whole bunch of CRAP!

It sounds like some more BS. I think many of us knew that 2010 was going to be a based on the facts on the ground and the polls. In this election a lot of races have been close but the dems look poised to maintain the senate and make some gains in other races. All I see are the same crappy polling outfits that made predictions that Romney was going to win.

I am with you JOB! I want Alison to win so that Democrats can retain the majority in the U.S. Senate; but I also truly despise her lack of courage to stand with President Obama. She totally squandered a golden opportunity to educate the people in Kentucky about the historic benefits of the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a., Obama Care) for the vast majority of the people in Kentucky.

nath - I was looking back for the “There is an endless supply of paint” post last night and spotted your name - and wondered whether you’d been around lately. And here you are when I open up TOD today. Amazing.

Next, I shall wonder why a new convertible is not parked in my driveway, with my name on it. Ha.

          Enjoy your day!
