      I whooped loud and proud when I read her response to such offensive ignorance. I’ve seen her in interviews and she’s always impressed me with her smarts and composure for a young person in the public eye. She knocked it out of the park with her response.

        I guess their “renewed vigor” comes from the latest internal report and from the message they’re receiving from dedicated donors like myself when they’ve been calling recently and asking for our money. I told the young lady I wouldn’t be making any more donations until dems stand up and support the president. I’ll still donate to the dems that have been doing it all along, but I will make no more blanket donations to democratic organizations through which the “timid” dems get donations they don’t work for.

    Love that Zendaya was silent about Kelly Osbourne’s claim that they are friends. Speaks volumes. Friends do not make and laugh at racist jokes about you. The we are friends excuse is such a cop-out.

      The apology/deflection/distraction tweet from Giuliana Rancic to Zendaya is typical, not surprising and induces much eye-rolling. It’s not about race, you see. She was just referring to a “bohemian chic look”. Hmm….. who knew that wearing an ivory satin couture dress by designer Vivienne Westwood whilst draped in diamonds from from Harry Winston or Chopard constituted “bohemian chic”!

          I just had a casually racist moment.

          A young lady I vaguely know by sight came to the reference desk. As I always do with my patrons, I chitchatted with her. She was wearing a cast on her foot, so I asked her what happened. She said that a car had hit her while she was on her bike. She had broken bones, broken teeth, and had to get all of it taken care of. I said “Well I hope you sued the bastard.” She then proceeded to say that “the bastard” drove off. The police found the car abandoned, and it was unregistered.

          Then the punchline: “It had to be an illegal. I mean, who else could do something like that and live with themselves? Ugh.”

          When I sell my novel, right before I quit to write full time I’m going to wait for another of these racist comments and unleash on the unfortunate soul.

            Wow. Oh my goodness.

            Because undocumented immigrants must be people without a conscience? What crock! The casual racist comments that slip from peoples mouths are stunning.

            It’s just like the local Fox News affiliate (funny how it always seems to be Fox News) newscaster who used the racial slur “jigaboo” (an offensive term for Black people) when criticizing Lady Gaga. Her colleague’s - who is Black - expression spoke for us all. She then tried to excuse it by saying she made up the word. Then issued an I’m sorry if you were offended comment. Apparently, these days, news reporters just make up words. What gave away her ridiculous lie was the casual way she used the word; suggesting that it is part and parcel of her everyday life.

            Save us from the ignorance, lord.

              Reminds me of that white woman anchor on CNN International who suggested that instead of using teargas on protesters in Ferguson, why didn’t the police “just” use fire hoses? Her black male fellow anchor’s expression said it all. She took a lot of blowback on Twitter, but I can’t recall if she even bothered to apologize. You probably saw this, since the video was making the rounds.

                I remember that. Fire hoses on Black people?!?! His expression was EVERYTHING. It wasn’t only the history it conjured up, but that she thought it was humane to use fire hoses on people instead of tear gas.

    I’m playing catch-up since I’m just arriving on the blog. I know little about the pipeline, but am I correct that President Obama vetoed the bill because it circumvented the regular regulatory process that goes through the normal channels, including the State Department? Ha ha ha. So, because the RWNJs didn’t wait for the usual process for approval/non-approval, he got ’em anyway? And he didn’t have to comment on climate change or land grabs or my new hair color or the birds and the bees, he could just veto it?

    If I’m reading this right, then this is but one of the reasons why #ILoveObama.

      Much better, she seems shellshocked, hopefully she’ll learn. But …… and I know it’s a good thing to accept apologies and move on …. can’t help thinking she’s really only sorry that she got herself in trouble. How could she not have known that what she said was racist, and then issue that dismissive ‘sorry if you were offended’ line even after having a few hours to think about it? Call me a cynic, but methinks this apology was written for her, I think her only regret is that she jeopardized her job.

        When horrible events like this happen, the people at the center often aren’t genuinely sorry, they’re just sorry they got caught, received backlash, and might lose their job. Plus, I think you’re on to something about the apology. Sounds like a PR person wrote it for her, then it was uploaded on the teleprompter for her to read.

      i think that some folks think that the only true Americans are white folks…i think often about this question…do i love America….there is a complicated answer…..before the President…my answer would have been NO…why should i….and i can list all the reasons why…the newest is the DOJ not being able to bring charges against Darren Wilson (see post down stream)…

      i think that i have to say that i have HOPE in the Promise of America….the possibilities…but i know that both of these things will not be achieved easily…they will come always come thru struggle….and that my struggle is often not for me…but for those who come after me

      we struggle with it on all levels…even at a freaking Academy Awards program…we are denigrated and debased…to the amusement of others….no apology can ever make it better…sigh…

      it is times like this…that i think of my grandmother …who told me on many occasions to never let racism be an excuse for failure…that i had to always strive to be the best of whatever i chose to be…..to know that… I. Am. Worthy….

    “On Tuesday, however, one Ukrainian about whose courage and commitment there can be no question also called for Nadiya to give up her hunger strike. Mustafa Dzhemiliev, Ukrainian MP and veteran Crimean Tatar leader addressed the following words to her:

    “Nadya, daughter, there is no sense in continuing the hunger strike. Russia is not a country with humane principles. Here in Ukraine we will definitely save you, but using other means”.

    71-year-old Mustafa Dzhemiliev spent 15 years in labour camp during which he declared hunger strike many times. He once spent 303 days on hunger strike, with the prison doctors force-feeding him when his condition became totally critical.

    In an interview for the publication GORDON, he recounted how during the final days of that hunger strike in 1975, he was allowed a visit from his mother and elder brother. The authorities presumably hoped that they could convince him to give up. His mother became very distressed and weak, and was taken out. While she was away, his elder brother said that he had no words that could change Dzhemiliev’s mind, but he did have one last argument. Through the glass barrier between them he passed his brother a card from Andrei Sakharov, the renowned physicist and human rights defender. Sakharov wrote the following words:

    “Mustafa, son, I’ve done everything I could and I now ask just one thing: enough of this hunger strike – your death will only bring joy to our enemies.””

    Reason given: ” It would be seen as partisan.”.

    I guess collaborating with Boehner to set the whole thing up was not partisan. Disrespecting PBO was not partisan.
