Epic Fail, Starbucks. You don’t force your baristas who you pay $7-$10 an hour to talk about race, when your practices don’t reflect what you speak. Corporate should lead the discussion

****

****

****

Starbucks says let’s talk about race. People say okay, tell us about your hiring practices, wages and salaries, who sits at the power table, etc. Their corporate dude deletes his Twitter account and locks his Instagram account. That’s how Starbucks talks about race. Congratulations, cowards

congrats j’ob. your critter has quit.

Representative Aaron Schock is resigning after questions over his use of campaign and public funds.

Mr Schock, 33, is under fire for his lavish spending, using public funds on donor-provided private flights and property transactions involving political contributors.

A congressional ethics investigation was reportedly under way.

The Republican from Illinois has served in Congress since 2009.

In a statement, Mr Schock said he would step down on 31 March, and was doing so with a “heavy heart”.

Sad, just Sad. Some misguided white PR team thought this idea was BRILLIANT and never asked a multi-racial focus group for an opinion before they let it fly.

      Dumb /smh

Sounds like the perfect time for a Starbucks boycott by POC and watch the profits dry up.

See my comment below. You do that, and the profits that are putting these people through college to earn their degrees, will dry up..and so will this incredible opportunity for so many people to get an education that might not normally be able to afford. Shortsighted and really not giving it the attention that it deserves….however, we shouldn’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

        • 51 GGail
          March 17, 2025 at 10:01 pm

DF, thank you for your comment. Then how about a brief boycott and to help negotiate a committee meeting of POC leaders with Starbucks to work out a better marketing tool. And I would really like to know how many POC are benefiting from these degree programs.

        • 52 Nerdy Wonka
          March 17, 2025 at 10:03 pm

This is not letting “the perfect be the enemy of the good.” This is about holding a company that is worth billions of dollars under questionable coffee beans procuring practices to a higher standard.

Until Starbucks shows that it will put its words into action, I don’t believe they don’t deserve to be critiqued when they’re wrong. That’s also unfair to POC.

Hi NW - I think it is your plan that I should spend each and every day reading TOD & associated links. What a collection you have put together.

Speaking of Aaron Schock as we were

If this happened in my world - he would probably be charged with winding back the mileage on his car before selling same - whatever he did - what a con - every expense of his life was related to his job? Grifters - RWNJ grifters - they hate government but love government money.

“Schock billed the federal government and his campaign for logging roughly 170,000 miles on his personal car from January 2010 through July 2014. But when he sold that Chevrolet Tahoe in July 2014, it had roughly 80,000 miles on the odometer, according to public records obtained by POLITICO under Illinois open records laws. The documents, in other words, indicate he was reimbursed for 90,000 miles more than his car was driven.”

Sorry. Slam me if you think you need to, but I can’t get behind this Starbucks bashing. Was it lame and short sighted? Yes. Was it even close to enough? No. Are barisitas the people you want to start that convo with…definitely not….but understand this. The best way to lift people up and elevate them in this world is through education…and the big boss at Starbucks has offered to pay for all/ part of a college education for ALL THOSE BARISTAS you’re talking about…all over the world! I can’t think of a better way to uplift and level a playing field for POC or ANYONE, than to get an education that was previously out of reach. I don’t want to belittle the importance of the conversation…but sometimes, the actual feat of educating ten of thousands of employees, better count for something. Walking the walk. Yeah, it counts to me and so many others. I won’t pile on.

    • 67 Nerdy Wonka
      March 17, 2025 at 9:53 pm

You’re not going to get slammed. It’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it.

      1. Educating the baristas - What is the qualifications process for Starbucks to educate their baristas? Until I see that every barista has their college education fully paid for and there are no shady underpinnings that allow for a negative blowback on the baristas, - because Starbucks is first and foremost a corporation invested in making money - I’m not cheering, clapping, or patting Starbucks on the back.

      2. If Starbucks wants to help POC, especially POC in developing countries that it claims it wants to educate, how about conduct better practices in how it obtains its coffee beans. If they want to help POC, how about looking at the price of their products and how many POC can’t afford them.

      3. They can talk the talk all they want, but their corporate picture says it all. They want to talk about race but their hiring practices don’t reflect what they speak. So, they speak out of one side of their mouth and do something else. That’s disingenuous and hypocritical.

      4. They want to talk about race. Okay. Let’s talk about if they have POC sitting and making decisions at the power table, let’s see how much they pay, let’s see their promotion policies.

      5. They want to talk about race. How about having qualified people hold long term lecture series, seminars, convos about race. Don’t put it in the hand of a barista when your executive is too cowardly to have the conversation on Twitter and instead deletes his Twitter account, and locks his Instagram.

However, NW makes some excellent and valid points here and I was about to add this point…”Don’t put it in the hand of a barista when your executive is too cowardly to have the conversation on Twitter and instead deletes his Twitter account, and locks his Instagram.” But she beat me to it. :-)

DF, please try to see it from our POC point of view. To us, it is glaringly obvious & insulting.

      March 17, 2025 at 9:57 pm

I don’t know how far it is true (that they educate all their people) and how much of it is just PR chaff meaning total bs. Even assuming they did educate them all, it was the dumbest idea to say ‘we educated you, so now you go educate cretins about race relations’. 3rd rate blunder.

      • 72 GGail
        March 17, 2025 at 10:37 pm

There is a caveat to this education provision, I can’t remember what it is, but it did have some “catch” to it and I’m not about to invest any more energy looking it up, suffice it to say, I said “ah ha” when I heard it back at the beginning of this education campaign.

    Happy St. Paddy’s Day everyone…(although Late) . :)
Here is a laugh for you…

A man was leaving a convenience store with his morning coffee
when he noticed a most unusual funeral procession
    approaching the nearby cemetery.

A black hearse was followed by a second black hearse
about 50 Feet behind the first one.

    Behind the second hearse
was a solitary man walking a dog on a leash.
Behind him, a short distance back,
were about 200 men walking single file.

The man couldn’t stand the curiosity.
    He respectfully approached
the man walking the dog and said:

“I am so sorry for your loss,
and this may be a bad time to disturb you,
but I’ve never seen a funeral like this.
    Whose funeral is it?”

    “Me wife’s.”

    ”What happened to her?”
“She yelled at me and my dog attacked and killed her.”

    He inquired further,
“But who is in the second hearse?”

    The man answered,
    “Me mother-in-law.
She was trying to help me wife
when the dog turned on her.”

A very poignant and touching moment of brotherhood and
silence passed between the two men.

    “Can I borrow the dog?”

    The man replied,
    “Get in line.”

I never have the impulse to discuss race with complete strangers in random situations. Not in a coffee line when I’m trying to have a consumer transaction and then move on out the door. Race is a spectacularly loaded subject and it requires a level of consent to converse about it. To speak productively about race, I want to trust the people in the conversation. I want to know that we are working toward a particular goal that is about progress. That doesn’t happen in a line at Starbucks. You don’t just spring the topic on someone who happens to be standing in front of you. So however well-intentioned the idea is, it’s patently silly and overly simplistic to think that POC in particular are in for this.

I wonder if they bothered to ask any POC outside the almost handful on their leadership page (if they even bothered consulting that almost handful) what they thought of the idea and how it would be implemented. If they were sincere about it, there are a ton of better ways to make a difference.

Thank you meta for seeing this clearly. One of the benefits of my TOD family is the ability to have open dialogue that perhaps can help us see one another with empathy. I don’t want any of us to feel that they can’t be a part of this family if we happen to disagree with their opinion. This dialogue about race is sensitive and sometimes painful, but it must occur - with consideration to all parties.

    My head is spinning.

I didn’t read the “baked Alaska” article, but when I was there 16 summers ago, the interior was nearly always aflame — mostly because of the Spruce Bark Beetle which basically devastates the trees so they become enormous matchsticks. This was before climate change really kicked in over the past couple of years. So Alaska will remain beautiful, but sadly denuded of trees. :(
