So chips I clicked your link and then went to Amazon in the US.. and plugged in the title and a few more ‘BO’ books popped up.. very cute, one is titled: “Bo, The First Commander in Leash”
NBC5 Chicago just showed a report about Judicial Watch who sued the Justice Dept about the FL’s African trip and concluded that it cost tax payer + $400.000 and that didn’t even include food/rooming etc and that Malia/Sasha were put on “staffer’s” list
I believe all the First kids end up on the staffers list - I saw Laura Bush’s daughter listed there from a trip a few years ago in an article I read a few months back, and she didn’t even make a public appearance. The Obama children did make public appearances, read to children, attended events, etc.
Let the right wingers stew - the fact is that the Obamas are the First Family, entitled to all the perks of being the First Family, and there’s nothing that the losers on the right can do to take that away from them. The Obamas are excellent ambassadors - the entire family, including Bo.
The right wingers will just have to stew in their bile.
The conservative government watchdog Judicial Watch FOIAed the US Air Force for information about the June 2011 trip to Africa by First Lady Michelle Obama and Sasha and Malia Obama and today issued a press release about the trip.
The White House says a number of assertion made by the group are in error.
To wit:
The group calculated that the use of the C-32A aircraft cost taxpayers $424,142 (34.8 flight hours x $12,188 per hour).
“The number stated is misconstrued and out of context,” says a senior White House official. “The hourly rate is not the marginal cost of operating the plane — it is an accounting figure that prices in a number of fixed costs from maintaining the Air Force fleet for this kind of plane over a year. For example, it includes estimated replacement parts, depreciation, repairs, and costs that would have been incurred regardless of this flight.”
Judicial Watch says that Sasha and Malia Obama are listed as “Senior Staff.”
Not true, says the White House.
“The Obama daughters were not listed as Senior Staff – that only designates the area of the plane where they were seated,” says the official. “The Air Force categorizes the passengers by compartment on the plane.”
The conservative group noted that the “trip ended with a private family safari at a South African game reserve before the group returned to Washington on June 27,” with Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton saying in a statement “This trip was as much an opportunity for the Obama family to go on a safari as it was a trip to conduct government business.”
The senior White House official says that private safari “was designated as a private event and paid for personally,” and argues against any suggestion that this trip was a vacation. “It was an official trip with a 5-7 official events each day,” the official says.
Founded by conservative attorney Larry Klayman in 1994, Judicial Watch came to public attention after filing 18 lawsuits against the administration of Democratic U.S. President Bill Clinton and figures in the Clinton administration. The organization received considerable financial support from prominent Clinton critics, including $7.74 million from conservative billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife.
I do remember reading way back then that any part of the trip that was personal, and daily expenses for food etc were picked up by the family. I assume by “sued” they meant for the information? Don’t know why it would be Justice… NBC5Chicago is usually balanced and not about cheap shots; makes me think they picked it up from their NBC National News feed. Brian Williams has become a super-jerk lately.
I just got an email about the introduction of a Constitutional Amendment in the House to fix the Citizens United (Corps are People Too!) decision. It was written and research by the group of constitutional lawyers who have been working on this since forever. I’m a tech anit-nerd and don’t know how to link it here. This may be a great story for you to feature. How can I get it to you? If you email me I will send. Thanks!
Please send Rep Donna Edwards your support for this effort. I called her office today and in addition sent an e-mail on suggestion of her staff. This is important, please take time to show your support. Heard it here first, so tip of the hat to whomever (I’m sorry, I’ve forgotten) first highlighted it.
Can you pass on a great, big heartfelt “Thank you” to Pres Obama from me and my wife please? You see, it’s our daughters’ book he’s signing in that last picture! She actually spoke up and asked if he could sign it, and he was nice enough to oblige :0) We bought the book a year or two ago to inspire two young daughters of our own, and we quickly took it to her class when told he’d be visiting the school. Yes, we entertained the idea of him signing it, and thought “wouldn’t it be nice!”, but knew it was a long-shot. We especially never thought our little one would take the initiative like she did and ask him in front of everyone haha! So, anyway, we were thrilled and over the moon when everyone told us the news and especially how it came about with a little voice asking at the right time, in a big way.
Everyone was so thrilled as they talked about how gracious President Obama was, and we are still on cloud 9 ourselves after seeing pictures of him interacting with our daughter and her classmates/ teachers! It’s an experience our family will never forget, and we plan to have those pictures in that signed book for a long time to come!
Thank you for such a wonderful experience President Obama! We know our daughter will cherish the memory of it the rest of her life.
Hello Mark and Denise! What a completely lovely story, thank you so much for sharing it with us! Thrilled for you and your daughter - good on her for asking the President to sign her book, she’s a little star!
