President Barack Obama visits with volunteers and evacuees at the YMCA serving as an evacuation center in Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs Gazette: After the Waldo Canyon fire exploded Tuesday night into a catastrophe that claimed two lives and destroyed 347 homes, a gloom descended on Colorado Springs … So I was pleasantly surprised to hear cheers and laughter Friday.
They erupted at the sight of President Obama at Fire Station 9 on Garden of the Gods Road …. most of the crowd was excited Obama was coming …. When a couple drunks stumbled up and started trash talking about Obama, several in the crowd quickly confronted them.
“Show some respect,” demanded Jack Martinez, who waited, camera in hand, to see the president of the United States …. “I’m glad he’s in town,” Martinez said as heads around him nodded agreement. “He should be here.”
….The doors of the black SUV with the presidential seal opened and Obama hopped inside. The crowd around me roared. Cheered. Hollered words of support …. I saw a soldier in camouflage on the curb snap to attention and salute as Obama drove past.
It was good to see the community smile again. No doubt, there will be more tears before this is over.
But I sensed the crowd was comforted to know we’re not alone. That our president cares. Our nation cares.

Denver Post: The mayor of this beleaguered city told reporters after President Barack Obama departed on Air Force One that he was thankful for the visit and described his two-and-a-half hours with the president during the tour of the Waldo Canyon Fire damage.
Air Force One was wheels up from Colorado Springs airport at 2:42 p.m. Afterward Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach said the firefighting effort “shows the power of federal, state and local governments working together.”
Bach was in the limo with Obama, Gov. John Hickenlooper and others for about 2 1/2 hours. He said the president was “very down to earth, very straightforward, smart, and wants to help.”
…. Bach said the mood in the limo was somber as they drove through Mountain Shadows. Obama was “very taken by what he saw.”
He described the president as “very engaging.” Bach said his most poignant memory of the visit will be that on several occasions Obama got out of car, came right up to engage the people and hugged them, thanking them.
“I think he was very sincere in that,” he said.
“It was more than a photo op for him. He clearly wanted to say to the people, the firefighters, ‘this matters and the country has your back.’ That means a lot.”

Morning everyone, chat away ;-)

1st
Congrats UT…me class of 76!
Thank you fellow Longhorn. And always remember: I Bleed Orange And Vote Blue.
Hook Em!
:D
First for the second day after months of no firsts?….This is BIG Chips!
Yeah, Ut.
Moooooooooooooooorning UT! Morning everyone.
She looks like she’s hugging daddy.
She looks like the rest of us, figuratively holding onto him for dear life! At least for another four!
Congradulations UT.
We just got power back on from a pretty bad storm last night. About 1/2 million people were without power in the DC, MD and VA areas.
Good Morning!!
Good morning!
Good morning all.
Have a great day.
Just wanted to say, it was a hard day for me yesterday. My middle son moved out of state. I spent most of the day holding back my tears but did let them flow just as he was leaving. Boy, I never thought it would be so hard to let them go. Yes, he is 22 but still….we are a close family and it will be hard not seeing him every day.
Ah Proud, you poor thing, amk was talking recently about how hard this is, no matter what age they are it must be a painful time for the parents. Feel for you.
It must be especially hard if they move out of state. Big hugs to you, proud.
That’s sad proud - I have a good friend who is going through the exact same thing - but remember - he will miss you terribly too and how wonderful will the reunions be! Skype makes it a little easier.
Or if sometimes they move out of the country……
I did cartwheels when mine left home. He is much nicer now, matured at last and is a good man and a good father.
It will get easier as time goes by. He’s just a phone call or a text message away.
My daughter moved out of the state, and out of the country for a while, and it was hard. But, she moved back, and she and her husband live only about 6 miles from us. And, what miss pat said worked…..she is much nicer now. She got a lot of the nasty growing up stuff out of her system. My son joined the Army when he graduated from high school…..I still remember the day he left for Basic! I cried too, but it did him worlds of good. Now mine are in their 40’s, he has three children, and both have become wonderful adults we enjoy being around. It all takes time! This is the right thing for him to do. Hard, but good.
I can relate, Proud. My oldest moved to California and then to Washington state 6 years ago, moved back here 3 years ago and then left me again last May to return to Washington. We text all the time but it isn’t the same.
Thank you all for your kind words. If you look at my FR link…this is the one that moved:
https://donate.barackobama.com/page/outreach/view/2012/Globalzero
Hey Proud. . . I like your goal!
Aw, proud :(…..I don’t know that feeling yet, I can only imagine, because I have a close family too…but just remember that we raise them up, and give them wings to fly….he’ll be alright, and so will you. You must be proud. He’ll be back…I’m sure he knows the door is always open:) Hugs to you….get a webcam…..you can Skype……and see if all the time…..blow kisses….:)
Proud, I know exactly how you feel. My son went off to college in California and when he decided to stay in the state and settle there, I thought my heart would break. That was 22 years ago and while it still hurts a little, I’ve learned to adjust to the reality that I won’t see him as often as I would love to. But I insisted that we talk to each other without fail every week no matter what else is happening and we have stuck to that promise. That way I don’t crowd him with a lot of calls every other day, but we keep in close touch. To get through this tough transition, promise yourself a little treat each day, look forward to the phone call and start planning for a visit. My heart is with you. You will make it.
Good morning all. Chips thanks for the excellent coverage and lots of good news coming our way of late. I nearly burst with joy when I first heard the news about the ACA decision. I just read a piece by Liberal Liberian at the People’s View. What an explanation deconstruction of how GOP and MSM keep underestimating PBO.
Hi Africa, it’s been an amazing few days, I’m still in shock over the ACA decision, I honestly never expected it - like most of the pundits! Hope all’s good with you, heading off to read LL’s post now, thanks for the heads up!
LL has a very good piece with a great perspective on the subject of PBO’s campaign strategy. His writing is crisp, clear and always engaging. We walk among giants!!
Seriously. This applies to LL, and so many others here. Agree, meta. We DO walk among giants.
Chris Hayes has a Robney Healthcare adviser on to talk about the decision.
Where is our representation?
I think he also has on one of the lawyers that fought against the law.
That is fair???
I lasted about 8 minutes….he is a whiner…..
He did have a NY rep at the table….and good old Ezra…” I know everything about everything and Chris Matthews thinks I am brilliant ” Klein.
I think I saw buckets of cold water under the table .
Here are a couple of good articles from PBO’s visit yesterday

WALDO CANYON FIRE: Obama brings laughter back to city
Martinez was angry that a couple barflies wanted to use the tragedy to launch personal attacks against Obama.
“I’m glad he’s in town,” Martinez said as heads around him nodded agreement. “He should be here.”
After about 40 minutes, the chatter stopped as the motorcade stirred. The press corps was hustled into vans. The doors of the black SUV with the presidential seal opened and Obama hopped inside.
The crowd around me roared. Cheered. Hollered words of support.
Some in the crowd said Obama waved as he sped off. They were thrilled.
I saw a soldier in camouflage on the curb snap to attention and salute as Obama drove past.
It was good to see the community smile again. No doubt, there will be more tears before this is over.
But I sensed the crowd was comforted to know we’re not alone. That our president cares. Our nation cares.

This is in deep red Focus on the Family Colorado Springs…………
Loved those LOL, thanks a million.
I love it when people in red states get to meet PBO and interact with him on a one on one level and slowly their warped preconceived notions of him as “the horror! the horror!” begin to change and they realize he really and truly is down to earth, compassionate, and a decent human being. Likability is a very important factor in politics.
THIS THIS and did I mention THIS. Just like when PBO went to Alabama….is it possible that he is coming because he cares?!?!
Suddenly “government” is not the big baddy, but the one that brings help! Hopefully some eyes will be opened. The Federal government is the ONLY one with the resources to deal with some disasters. Volunteers are great for food and clothing, but the big stuff has to come from the government.
We were in ColoSpgs last June at a wedding of a friend, and at the reception talked with some teachers who had been let go in that fierce “cost-cutting” binge of the city. They also told us of firefighters and police who had been let go. I’m afraid the city is now paying the price for those harsh, radical policies. Sounds like the mayor’s eyes are at least partially open now. They all WANT federal money and help when disaster comes, after badmouthing the gov’t for years! Colorado Springs is a beautiful place and I have good friends there and hate to see this happen. But as someone said upthread, Focus on the Family has totally distorted a lot of community thinking, and they are going to have to shed that to get themselves together again. They are fortunate to have so any military bases right there for help.
Spot on, Ut!!!!
I especially like this article of just such an example. It was very heartwarming to see the Colorado Springs Gazette article on “This That and the Other” last night before I went to sleep.
This is cool! But I already dropped 100 this month! LOL!
GM folks. Enjoying onion rings made the indian way for my evening snack. Here, try some.
I’m going to re-post the link you provided earlier, in case anyone missed it and because I love love love it—-it is too adorable. Dad interviews 2 daughters, Eva and Sadie, about the 5 yr. old giving her 3 yr. old sister a haircut. And just remember that everyone does that kind of bad stuff once or 3 times or 2 times or once in their lives.
http://www.prx.org/pieces/73865-two-little-girls-explain-the-worst-haircut-ever#description
Oh Dotster, that is the MOST hilarious thing I have EVER heard in my ENTIRE life, I’m weepin’!!!!!!
That was just priceless, put that on FB. My Neice’s daughters did that, was too funny then and this is hilarious for the why of it all. thanks for sharing.
D3, that’s so adorably funny :)
That is SO funny! “it takes a LOT of concentration!” Mad me laugh! :D
That was precious, wasn’t it ?
What did you do with the hair ?
I hid it under the radiator.
LOL.
I could replay it a thousand times, funniest thing ever. These two should have their own show!
And the Dad. . . Excellent. My father would have hit the roof and we would have never heard the end of it.My little brother took my dad’s razor and shaved off his hair way above his ears and then told my mom his hair fell out. She envisioned he may have ringworm until they saw the shavings in the bathroom sink. My dad flipped out said horrible things to him and grounded him to his room. My brother was only 4.
OMG. That is the cutest thing EVER! I have to save this and let my now 21 yo daughter hear this:) She doesn’t have a sister, but she DID manage to do that to her girlfriend’s hair when she was that age….yes…at some point in everyone’s life, they just can’t help themselves:) These are very smart little girls……
I recall my now 43-y/o son cutting the front of his own hair the night before his kindergarten photo was taken. So, luckily, I have the photographic proof to back up the story and show his own kids! Still a cute photo, especially with the uneven hair. Almost wish he were that young now (almost!).
My sister did that to me when I was little. My mother often told the story how I came in the room with one braid off when my sister cut my hair, and how she cried and had to cut the rest of my hair.
Good morning, amk!! I’d join you but somehow I never get used to the time difference between you and San Francisco. It’s 6:08 am here and the fog horns have just started to sound their usual oooooooommmmmm. I think I’m more in a hot tea mood at the moment!!
Me and you, meta, cool lovely rain here, hot tea, kitty in my lap. I’m taking the day off tomorrow. I can hardly imagine….
You better take a day off! Allowing, having - get those creative juices flowing!
You’ve just said two magic words, amk: onion rings. I would most happily live on them. But now you’ve made me sad - I WANT THEM NOW!!!
Here, have one.
But that was my last one…
My mistake. I should have eated the whole thing by myself.
Good morning Tod_ville. Hi AMK please share the recipe. Thanks.
Hi jam
Here is the video (very close to what we have still not the same)

Be careful with the spices. :)
How do you make it the indian way? Would love to try.
Good Morning Chips and Congrats UT on being First. I hve a question for all you smart TOD’ers. I went on MSNBCTV to Martin Bashir’s program and all I get is facebook crap to embed, email, download to fb. No video. Is there something I have to do to see the clips? This has changed since I have been able to get on my computer to start catching up. HELP!! :)
Is your adobe flash player up to date?
Just checked it out and I am with #9 version. I normally update when I get notified. What I get is a screen that says I have to FB it, embbed it, twitter it or email it, the clip just doesn’t come on. Is there a place on You tube that carries these clips. I am so, illiterate when it comes to this stuff. :) Thanks UT
I’ll go check out the MSNBCTV website and try to help you figure out the problem, but in the interim, this user on youtube always posts a lot of videos from MSNBC and other political stuff. Maybe it’ll have what you’re looking for.

Speaking to reporters about the fires Wednesday, Hickenlooper, a Democrat, was asked about charges leveled by conservatives online that the Obama administration helped fuel the wildfires by cancelling a contract last year with a private company that provided air tankers to the U.S. Forest Service.
Obama earlier this month signed a bill increasing the number of tankers to the Forest Service’s fleet, which conservatives have said was a political nod to a swing state.
Asked about criticism from the right over the Obama administration’s canceling of the contract, Hickenlooper offered an uncharacteristically strong defense of the president.
“Were these the same conservatives that were so worried about the Obama administration spending too much money, or were these different conservatives?” Hickenlooper said.

Linda, that’s exactly what I said. These right wingnuts are always running around complaining about too much Government. Till they need that big Government, now they got the darn nerve to try to blame President Obama. It’s all politics, these dam idiots would blame this President if the sun didn’t come up tomorrow. Tell these complainers that their man want to do away with hiring more fire fighters. Mitt Romney, their man don’t think we need more fire fighters, he think they should be fired.
Slide show here from our beloved Pete Souza.

Love that last picture of the President’s arm around the firefighter and the firefighter’s arm around the President! That picture says more than words can!
Another RWNJ hatefest may be heard before the Supreme Court next October: DOMA

BRING IT!!
I know I sound overly confident considering that half the court follows Fox News instead of the law.
The GOP keeps painting themselves into the tiniest corner. They are so out of touch with what really matters to the majority of Americans.
Nancy Pelosi is on MHP this morning……I will hold my nose and watch that segment.
So, NH and Maine are looking to opt out if the Medicaid expansion!
Wow! What about all those People, that will not get that coverage?
Hospitals, insurance companies, and big business won’t allow them to opt out. They want that Medicaid expansion money. They want it bad. Remember when Medicare and Medicaid became the law of the land and some states said they were going to opt out of it, eventually they didn’t because no sane state refuses all free money from the federal government. It’s just not done. It’s a cunning and smart move by the Obama Admin to stay silent for now and watch these states try to hang themselves. When people in those states realize they’re losing out on a benefit that people are receiving in other states, they’re gonna make a big stink and businesses will not like that states aren’t taking advantage of such huge savings and incentives. It’s all hot air for now. When ObamaCare is fully implemented, states will be running to the front of the line to take the Medicaid expansion money.
You are talking about logic! The Republican legislators and Governors only want to score points, against this President! Thus…
It is not going to happen. They will accept the Medicaid expansion. NH and Maine are inherently Blue states with some red outliers. People will not stand for it. They’re trying to make hay out of BS.
I just dont trust them. In my state of Florida, a state that turned down Free HSR money, is already saying they will opt out!
I dont trust them!
Governor Scott is a great example.
Jovie, I have to ask this question, how in the HELL did you guys get bless with Rick Scott?
I show have said curse.
AA’s did not not vote 2010. He won by a very narrow margin.
Your state might have turned that down, but your state did not turn down free healthcare money. Healthcare is different. Healthcare is more personal and meaningful to a lot of people than HSR.
This is different than HSR. Their “opting out” doesn’t free them of the law and the process of implementation. The Feds will do it.
Scott can be voted out in a couple of years can’t he? Any new governor the state elects has got to have more sense than that dolt, so it shouldn’t be an issue in Florida for long.
up. Not.Gonna.Happen. Despite these nutso govnors.
My state (Okla) has done nothing about the exchange, the governor and pals were so sure the act was going to be declared unconstitutional. We have a high rate of uninsured, and the state has done nothing. The governor is mad at the ruling. She is going to have to follow the law, as even Scott Walker of Wis was told by his Republican Att Gen’l this week. Whether they like it or not, this is the law of the land. They HAVE to comply. The first deadline is Nov 13 for a plan, and if they don’t have one, there WILL be penalties, and the feds will step in. They LOVE Citizens United, but suddenly don’t like this ruling.
How can they rejoice about people NOT having health care? They are just plain cruel. Do they not realize that the U.S. is NOT #1 in health care in the world? The last I read that honor goes to France (The country RWNJs love to hate). I have friends who have had personal experience with health care in both Italy and France…..fantastic care and little charge, even for Americans.
On our trip to Rome three years ago, one of the women fainted just outside the Colosseum. The Carabinieri were there in 30 seconds, and the ambulance was there within two minutes. Her son is a doctor and he went with her. He said they did “exactly what WE would have done in such a case….started a glucose drip…..” Her care at the Roman hospital was excellent, and there was no charge. Now, I know somebody pays for it…..their taxes are higher…..but you get a lot for those. He said that trip and hospital stay would have been $10,000 in the U.S. He was quite impressed and it did a lot to change his mind. Another friend broke her ankle in the Louvre, and had to go to emergency in Paris. The time was not long in the waiting room, they x-rayed, put a cast on, and the charge was I think about 50 euro. Her care was what she would have had here. We have a long way to go. In Holland, new mothers have a visiting nurse who comes once a week to check on how things are going, whether she’s a Dutch citizen or not. That is preventive care and very smart.
These Right wingers need to get out some.
I will say it depends where you live. My daughter adopted a preemie in Illinois and they provided a team of therapists who came to her home once a month to check milestones, provide tools and physical therapy etc.—-for about 18 mo. I believe—-until they decided he was well on his way and developing normally. We’re going to his 3 yr. old bday party today——he’s the cutest thing you ever saw—-verbal and funny and loving. He always seems real excited to see us when we appear at his door. He says excitedly, “Oh hi! Come on in!!!” So cute. Today he’s most excited about cupcakes—-he requested “brown and white ones”—-and that there will be “kids there”.
congrats on a wonderful family!
I agree UT. Isn’t NH already working on single payer?
Look, people. Any state that opts out of the exchange, will have the federal govt. do one for them. They lose all input. As for Medicaid the loss of dollars and coverage will force them to pay too high a political cost.
Yup.
I agree with you. I expect some posturing and there is no doubt that these RWNJ governors are more than happy to screw their constituents in order to hurt PBO. But I think it’s going to be a whole lot less than people realize.
High risk pools were one of the first provisions to be implemented and there was a ton of b.s. angst. I remember reading that it was the poor, red states that quietly let the Federal government set up their plans.
Now they’ll lie to their people about who enacted the program, but you’ll see more of these states take advantage of the Medicaid expansion than you now expect. And UT is right — hospitals, insurance companies and any hope of businesses moving to these states will demand that their cash cows continue.
Biggest user of food stamps? Walmart. You think they’re going to advocate cutting food stamps? Same idea.
Lifetime channel drops Bristols Reality Show!
Poor Tea Bagger.
giggle…
I went to the Alaska blog to see if they had that yet ( they don’t )….and found this.
Jovie how long was the show on? An hour. Maybe if that witch of a mother of hers were up there it would have help. Here’s an ideal, why don’t Bristol go back to school and get an education, study to make something of her life beside trying to be some reality wanna be tv star.
I understood it is being bumped from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM. It is still a disaster.
Good. Can’t stand Palin Jr. Tired of the whole damn family actually.
I really don’t understand this American obsession with watching empty-headed imbeciles make fools of themselves on reality TV.
Amen. I don’t watch reality tv.
Meta, it’s called dumbing down of America.
Me neither.
Did they drop it altogether? I thought they moved them out of prime time? It still wouldn’t matter to me. People are seeing these grifters for what they are.
dropped!

Mitt runs from that because he knows if he doesn’t run from it his right wingers, tea baggers, racists would run from him.,
Good morning TOD Family. This has been some week and I am so grateful to all who made it possible.
Love it!
rt’d yez
Dear Chips - have been wanting to say thank you for your always marvellous work on this site - and especially during this last week - it really added to the enjoyment being able to interact with so many happy PBO supporters.
Thank YOU Cluny, you’re lovely!
Thanks…..you are the best.
:-)
Thank you for the tweet, retweeted all. Romney signed the bill into law, but Gov. Patrick implemented and fixed it.
I think that the best thing about PBO is his accessibility to people, ordinary people. I know he has constraints which are designed to protect him but the way that he is able to interact with people of the US makes him special. I can’t ever imagine meeting the leader of Canada or even getting close enough to shake his hand. PBO is certainly a genuine caring person.
Interesting take on Obamacare that I’ve thought of before but this is sooo true. Below are a few excerpts from Jezebel
From Jezebel: “Obamacare: One Less Reason to Get Married
Erin Gloria Ryan”
“Conservative pundits claim that the Affordable Care Act will deal a blow to freedom, to capitalism, to the economy, and probably to the baby Jesus and kittens, for good measure. But one traditionally conservative institution that’s about to take a beating isn’t getting much ink: marriage. Any way you slice it, the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Affordable Care Act is the death knell for the Insurance Wedding, that sometimes secret, often hasty legal leap a desperate couple will make when one party has great insurance and the other has weird chest pains.”
——-
“Insurance Marriages had become to the 21st century what shotgun weddings were to jokes about hillbillies. Back in 2004, the LA Times wrote about couples that married for insurance, couples who for varying reasons had not wanted to marry, but who had been driven to marriage by financial necessity. ABC News posted its own roundup of With This Policy, I Thee Wed-style couples in 2008, as did the New York Times. In 2008, 7% of couples who married reported doing so primarily for the insurance benefits.”
———
“But it’s not just marriage that will have to adjust to health care reform; divorce will change as well. The Times mentions insurance divorces in its 2008 piece, and yesterday, readers discussed delaying divorce in order to preserve one party’s access to health care. One reader even recalled a relative who remarried her ex husband after he was diagnosed with cancer, so the husband could afford care. But now, goodbye to all that.”
http://jezebel.com/5922206/obamacare-one-less-reason-to-get-married
My sister married for insurance. It did not end well.
I am a family mediator. This has been an issue in every divorce I have done in the last several years. The parties agree to delay the entry of the decree for a certain period of time so the non-insured spouse will have health care.
Thus, another example of how many will benefit, they will make psychologically healthier decisions, and marriage will benefit in the long run, from people choosing each other for the right reasons! Thereby, lessening the divorce statistics…
Update on the Joe Williams story.
Joseph Williams, the White House correspondent for Politico who was recently suspended for some questionable tweets and comments he made on television about Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney, is leaving the publication.
The following is a memo sent through Politico‘s newsroom just after dawn from Editor-in-Chief John Harris:
“After some cordial discussions, Joe Williams and I mutually decided
that the best step for him is to begin a transition to the next phase
of his career. Joe is an experienced and respected journalist, with
keen insights into politics. After nearly 30 years in the business, he
has the authority and is ready to give voice to his insights and
conclusions in a new setting.
“He’ll be on leave of absence during this transition, and he’s got my
gratitude for the contributions he made here, both as reporter and
editor. I have told Joe—and it’s a sentiment others who worked closely
with him here share—that he’ll have my support as he prepares for what
I expect will be a good and prominent next chapter in his career.
John”

p.s. Yet they let Julie Mason spew prejudiced and borderline racist crap about Pres. Obama. They let her write disgusting articles that always commented on the color of Pres. Obama’s skin. That’s the kind of journalism Politico practices. The Black guy speaks truth, he gets canned. The white woman spews racist BS, she’s patted on the head.
I wish him well…..I am sure someone will snap him up .
I have NEVER read Pollutico and when they come on a show I mute it.
We know if Mr. Williams had said something negative about President Obama he would still have his job. Politico is just like Fox and all the other right wing pile of lying crap.
Why they are quoted all over cable is the mindbending question. Anyone who can’t see Politico as a GOP talking point machine must not really get it. Mike Allen and Jim Vandehei, long before Politico were staunch GOP mouth pieces on C-span. Allen would breathlessly defend Bush, no matter what. Couldn’t see any wrong in the administration. Same with Vandehei. I’ve always wondered who funds this outfit.
Julie Mason has a show that is aired on Xmradio channel 124 POTUS and it is pretty sickening. I have to turn her off.
Same here. If I’m in the car at that time, do not listen to her. Like Pete Dominic though…..he follows her.
I am glad that Williams is leaving Politico. From his analysis, I often wondered why he was at Politico. Maybe MSNBC will find a good spot for him. We can always use a sane and fair voice of reason.
Romney’s critiques of Europe raise some questions
He has accused President Obama of ‘taking us down a path towards Europe’ with his economic tactics. But critics say Romney’s plans to shrink government could bring about comparable problems.
For years, Republican crowds have applauded his scathing critique of Europe. As Europe’s fiscal turmoil has posed a growing threat to the global economy, Romney has made it one of his main lines of attack against President Obama.
Romney’s presentation ignores aspects of the European crisis that critics see as an illustration of how his own plans to shrink government could threaten the sputtering U.S. recovery. In Greece, Spain, Ireland and other Eurozone nations, unemployment has soared amid steep government cutbacks under austerity measures championed by Germany.
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-europe-campaign-20120630,0,1745453.story
Romney goes after Europe, Russia, China, Arab countries, and on and on… Does he ever say something positive about any country ( except Israël) ? Republican leaders are wonderful at promoting xenophobia, aren’t they?
My gosh, the GOP is completely lost in the wilderness.
They have nothing. They can’t convince people with ideas, so they’re reduced to try to win elections on negativity, on fear and hate. Sad. And dangerous.
Oh yes, such a great point…..he never say anything positive about any country….his comments about Russia were embarrassing…
Sad, dangerous…and scary!…
If you missed Nancy Pelosi on MHP Show, you missed a LOT. She reminds of Ted Kennedy. She has the heart of a lioness. The way she beautifully compared Pres. Obama to JFK, the way she stood firm on ObamaCare, the way she refuted and challenged any negative attack on ObamaCare was beautiful. She is a champion and a fighter!
She made ObamaCare personal. Talked about how it positively helps children, women, men, families, college students. Every freaking demographic.
Then she closed by referencing Teddy Kennedy and how when he knew his brain tumor was getting worse, wrote a letter to Pres. Obama and asked that it be delivered to PBO when he, Teddy, died. She said that PBO told her that Teddy wrote that Pres. Obama reminds him so much of his brother JFK who brought hope to a beleaguered nation. She said that Teddy told PBO that he was just like JFK in that he and JFK are/were young dynamic leaders the nation needs/needed at a crucial time. That Teddy told PBO that though he’s dead, he has the utmost confidence that PBO would continue the fight for healthcare reform. That this is PBO’s time. That this is PBO’s moment and this moment in time has been waiting for Pres. Obama in particular. No one else. That it would be Pres. Obama and no one else who would make healthcare reform a reality. She ended by talking about how Teddy emphasized that he knew Pres. Obama would do it. That he will not be there physically but he knows that Pres. Obama will accomplish history.
After ObamaCare was ruled constitutional, Nancy called Vicki Kennedy and told her that Teddy can now rest, that Pres. Obama has accomplished history and Teddy can breathe a sigh of relief and they both began sobbing uncontrollably.
Her interview brought to home once again how historic ObamaCare is. 5 years….10 years….20 years from now, we will look back on this moment and smile because healthcare will finally be a right and not a privilege.
Thanks for sharing, Ut. This is so profound. Brought tears to my eyes.
She is very well informed. The rest of Her Caucus, not so much!
Teary eyes reading this…thanks UT…..
I don’t know how President Obama did it, how he kept his vision intact with all the attacks he got from both sides but he did it…he’s amazing.
Thanks so much for that summary, uta. It brought tears to my eyes because it has been such a hard fought battle and PBO never ever ever gave up. He has such a deep faith in our democracy, it’s astounding. That’s why the attacks on him are so beneath our dignity.
Wow! This really brings tears to my eyes. I love Nancy and I so loved JFK and Teddy. Nancy should get a big thanks from all of us for bringing this all home. I can just imagine the emotion PBO must have felt when he opened Teddy’s letter. I’ll bet it stays with him in his heart every day.
“We’re Americans………… We take care of each other.” President Obama
Okay, this is true from yesterday. What I want is for you to guess which one was which.
I was sitting at a red light yesterday. I saw my 1st Romney Bumper Sticker close to my house. I have seen many more Obama/Biden stickers.
Two cars were next to each other at the light. One had an Obama Sticker, one had a Romney Sticker.
* Both vehicles were old and beat up.
* One was a old beat up pick up truck with no AC…tools and buckets loaded in the back, truck was also filthy.
* One was old old beat up mini van with no AC….tools and buckets loaded to the roof of the van in the back. Van was clean.
Question:
Which one had the Romney Sticker and which one had the Obama/Biden sticker?
I will tell you who won after a few of you guess.
The clean one was Obama/Biden….no doubt in my mind.
Hmmmm…If I may put on my stereotype hat for a moment. So, it is likely that based on what the media tells me, hard working blue collar voters (such as the person driving the truck) hate PBO because he eats arugula. On the other hand, the media also tells me, that mini van drivers are probably soccer moms who are married….and thusly so, hate PBO. Therefore, my guess is that you are lying..and they both had Romney stickers. :) :)
The pick up is PBO, the mini van is Myth.
I’m with Pamela.
I don’t lie. The Pick up was Romeny….hard days work…drives home…crack opens a beer and turns on FOX. Mini Van…hard days work…drives home…washes it because he is proud of that hard days work and wants to take his family out.
I had to step away before posting my guess. However, my guess was the van was Obama/Biden; pick-up Romney.
Or, like me, who has a little car with very lovely Obama stickers on it, just gets dirty sometimes, and when it gets so that I can’t stand it anymore, I wash it… Maybe this van was dirty the day before…. I’m with LOL, I was trying not to stereotype, but maybe stereotypes are such because they fit the code! Bye, off to work, back later..
I knew it. I’ve seen too any dirty pickups here in Oklahoma with Romney stickers not to know!
Guys what we all know is that there are some people out there who only care about one thing, Mitt Romney is WHITE.
And he is giving a lot of us white folks a bad name….. Ef’fer…
The dirty truck could represent a blue collar worker whom PBO has been reputed to have lost according to the all knowing BS’ing pundits. So the dirty truck could be the one with the Obama/Biden sticker.
Or, the two cars might have had Romney stickers proving that even though they’re voters we’re trying to target they’re foolishly supporting Romney.
Hi Proud, my guess is the clean van has the Obama/Biden bumper sticker. and the dirty truck has the Romney sticker on it.
I saw a homemade sticker that said:

AMA: Supreme Court Decision Protects Much-Needed Health Insurance Coverage for Millions of Americans
For immediate release:
June 28, 2025
Statement attributable to:
Jeremy A. Lazarus, MD
President, American Medical Association
The American Medical Association has long supported health insurance coverage for all, and we are pleased that this decisionPDF FIle means millions of Americans can look forward to the coverage they need to get healthy and stay healthy.
“The AMA remains committed to working on behalf of America’s physicians and patients to ensure the law continues to be implemented in ways that support and incentivize better health outcomes and improve the nation’s health care system.
“This decision protects important improvements, such as ending coverage denials due to pre-existing conditions and lifetime caps on insurance, and allowing the 2.5 million young adults up to age 26 who gained coverage under the law to stay on their parents’ health insurance policies. The expanded health care coverage upheld by the Supreme Court will allow patients to see their doctors earlier rather than waiting for treatment until they are sicker and care is more expensive. The decision upholds funding for important research on the effectiveness of drugs and treatments and protects expanded coverage for prevention and wellness care, which has already benefited about 54 million Americans.
“The health reform law upheld by the Supreme Court simplifies administrative burdens, including streamlining insurance claims, so physicians and their staff can spend more time with patients and less time on paperwork. It protects those in the Medicare ‘donut hole,’ including the 5.1 million Medicare patients who saved significantly on prescription drugs in 2010 and 2011. These important changes have been made while maintaining our American system with both private and public insurers.”

And the Eric Holder fiasco goes bye bye with a wimper. No ‘prosecution’. Because there’s no prosecution when the AG is acting legally.
They may think it’s going “bye bye with a wimper”, but I hope that people don’t forget what these people did to the dignity of the House, the abuse of power, the attempt to shame the first black Attorney General of the United States of America - all perpetrated by a car thief criminal who was somehow voted into the US Congress. I hope people don’t forget that.
Absolutely.
Indeed! Lets remind them on twitter every chance we get.
Well, it is a Law, if Congressholds anyone in contempt, it triggers an automatic prosecution from DOJ! But, Their is NO prosecution because the President issued executive privilege, which cancels the Prosecution.
I guess I misunderstood. I thought the prosecutor could determine independently if there were grounds for prosecution. I think I read that before executive privilege had been invoked. Not as good news as I’d thought.
what happened to the congressional civil case of contempt? The case sent to the DOJ was the criminal case. The HOuse voted for both.
They are moving forward with the civil case!
Civil cases move SLOWLY, and that will require hundreds of depositions, exculpatory evidence. etc. ……that is really a no win for Issa. A criminal case dan be fast and dirty, he lost.
Charles Blow breaks it down again. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/30/opinion/obama-for-the-win.html?_r=1&hp
This is a BFD!
Here is what Governor Scott said about the healthcare ruling/
“What I’m concerned about is that what happened with that bill being declared constitutional is the fact that it’s going to be bad for patients, bad for taxpayers, bad for businesses,” he said Friday after a speech in Tampa. “But we’ll be looking at that — the issue over the exchanges, the issue over whether we can afford to expand Medicaid.”
Any questions?
It wasn’t a bill. It was already a law. Maybe while he’s “looking at that”, the people of Florida could start looking into hiring themselves a new governor?

Sheldon Adelson Approved ‘Prostitution Strategy': Fired Former Sands Executive
LAS VEGAS — The fired former chief executive of Las Vegas Sands Corp.’s Macau casinos alleges in court documents revealed Thursday that billionaire Sheldon Adelson personally approved of prostitution and knew of other improper activity at his company’s properties in the Chinese enclave.
Brad Brian, an attorney representing Las Vegas Sands Corp. and Sands China Ltd., called the allegations false and “scurrilous” and claimed they had been included in the civil lawsuit brought by former Sands executive Steven Jacobs only to sensationalize the case.
Adelson, a billionaire philanthropist and casino mogul who owns the Venetian and Palazzo casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, also is a prominent political donor who gave $10 million to a super PAC backing then-presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich and more recently has supported Mitt Romney’s bid for the White House.
Jacobs was fired in July 2010 from his role overseeing the Macau properties. He sued the companies and Adelson three months later.
In the lawsuit, he accuses the company and Adelson of breach of contract and of pushing him into illegal activity in Macau, a former Portugese colony near Hong Kong where Sands has established a strong business presence. The company owns the Venetian Macao and Sands Macao casino resorts, the Plaza Macao hotel, restaurant and shopping complex and the newly opened Sands Cotai Central resort with three hotels and two casinos.

Leading Anti-Obamacare Congressman: ‘I Don’t Want To Hear Any Talk From Republicans About Preserving Any Aspect Of It’
Rep. Steve King (R-IA) has a message for those Republicans wavering on whether to repeal popular provisions of Obamacare: “it’s all or none.”
What a sick bully…..
Yea let them sign a pledge or something…..
http://thinkprogress.org/health/2012/06/29/508874/steve-king-full-repeal/
Rep. Steve King is another one of those crazy nasty racists Right wing Republicans.
HO Ho HO all my OOOOs! What a great gettin up day in TODhood! I’m still cheesing over the ACA ruling and what it means to my family and many others. As a matter of fact, I think I’ll take the granddaughter with me to help stimulate the economy. That is, if I pass her ‘do we have to stay together in the mall’ test. Of course she’ll have to pass my ‘you stay with the one that brung ya and has da moola at the mall test’.
My political take is we are still facing the narrowest of independents who will ultimately decide this election in the narrowest number of swing states. PBO continues to talk to and relate to those folks, while Pittiful continues to throw red meat at his reluctant base.
Smartypants has a great post that posits a highly plausible theory on why Justice Roberts ruled the way he did: http://immasmartypants.blogspot.com/2012/06/frum-on-roberts-v-scalia.html
Thanks Tien Le….great post indeed…
Chief Justice Roberts just joined the few people on the right who have rejected the idea of total obstruction all the time, while justices like Scalia run ever faster off an extremist cliff.
My own personal tangential ACA story. My doctor resisted electronic records until ACA made it a no-brainer. he made the switch at the end of last year.
I had a bizarre thing happen to me on Thursday. I woke up, and my upper lip and down into my jowls was swollen enormously. I’m uninsured, and did what people without insurance do: I took strong coffee and benadryl which arrested the bizarre, deformed swelling. But of course I called my asthma doctor who serves as my GP to let him know and see what I should do.
He accessed my records even though he was not yet at the office. By my description of the unusual form of swelling, he immediately knew it was a reaction to my blood pressure med (even though I’ve been on it for 8 years. Go figure). He said he sees it all the time. He wouldn’t let me off the phone until he electronically sent the prescription for my new blood pressure med with a warning that I was never to take a certain class of drugs.
One of the reasons I let my insurance lapse when my husband neared Medicare age was that my asthma and high blood pressure were not covered; and my high deductible catastrophic policy was then $800/month WITHOUT covering my conditions, for which I had to pay out of pocket. I couldn’t afford both. When my husband went on Medicare I assumed I could reinstate my policy — not a chance.
I need to apply to the high risk pool. I had applied online for insurance but that wasn’t the paperwork the State of IL needed. I need a signed rejection letter and I couldn’t get that from applying online. I need to reapply, and I don’t blame anyone but myself that I haven’t done it yet.
But even me, tangentially, benefited from ACA this week.
Wow. Its sad that so many people have to go through situations like this.
Especially since my husband and I had made health insurance a priority and paid for expensive individual policies for 25 years.
I had my first asthma attack 3 years after we started carrying individual insurance. My claim was denied because ‘no one get s asthma at 33 years old.” From then on no policy would cover my asthma or anything pulmonary. If I was in a car accident they would pay for the broken arm but fight me on the punctured lung. American health care industry.
So we paid and paid, reducing coverage and raising deductibles to afford health insurance. The year before my husband was eligible for medicare he needed the ER on xmas morning due to nerve pain in his neck that had raised his bp to 210/110.
BCBS denied the $1,000 claim. Neck pain wasn’t ‘life threateniing’. Of course the dangerous bp was life threatening but they fought the claim. Our only claim in 25 years. Our previous month’s premium was more than the claim. So we cancelled. And I can not get insurance.
This is the ‘freedom’ the rw talks about. Someone can get a ct scan for every sinus headache but my husband couldn’t get a claim paid after 25 years of paying into the system.
That story and the right wing’s freedom bs really makes me angry. How the hell is that freedom? All that money and can’t a dime’s worth of protection from it. Unbelievable.
My hairdresser made a good point: isn’t there some way they can pass a regulation or law that at the very least we get the money we’ve put in as premiums if we need care? That dreadful Christmas when, as my goddaughter the doctor said, my husband’s blood pressure was threatening his life due to the extreme pain, they wouldn’t pay a claim that was less than that month’s premium — it’s just effing outrageous.
I wish but you know the insurance companies would lose their shit over that.
I have SO MUCH respect for Rep. John Lewis! He is a giant in my thinking.
I couldn’t agree more.
Hope that someone can answer a question about fundraising for me…..My preferred way of donating is by purchasing and wearing Obama 2012 hats, visors, buttons, etc because I live in downtown NYC and am out and about a good deal. I figure i am a walking ad for PBO.
The ? is , isn’t this donating? I ask because the e-mails in the last few days and hours have been relentless even though I placed another order at the OFA store.
Yes, its donating but its near the end of month so the campaign is going to keep sending those e-mails. As the election gets closer they will probably send more.
I purchase the Obama stuff from the OFA store especially key chains, lawn signs, and stickers and i give to co-workers and friends. i also give to people I meet at my fitness club Lifetime. I live in MN.
Yes, indeed, to me it is, and I love giving stuff away! Spread the joy!
Don’t know what to do today?
gobrooklyn, I plan to stay inside, drink alittle more water.
I was looking forward to do some shopping but after yesterday, nope. Just going to local grocery store and picking up a few items after I clean this kitchen.
Our ongoing summer temp are at 104 to 112 deg F.
We have only three seasons in my part of India - Hot, Hotter, Hottest
Damn! I couldn’t take that all year round. 90 degrees is too much for me.
Phew, I’m sweating just thinking about that, amk.
Here in Atlanta it was 106 yesterday and there is not much relief in sight.
I remember a horrible heat wave here back in the 1980’s . over 100 elderly died….The little church around the corner from me had a message on their sign that said.
” Warning ….Only hell is hotter ” !
Yep, I just reminded my parents to stay inside. They were straightening out the garage — even that’s too hot. Everybody who can, needs to just stay inside. Check on people you know and if someone doesn’t have AC, get them some fans or better yet bring them to your place. Seriously. It’s very dangerous!
Woweee!
I count my lucky stars that I live in a place where we have our natural summer condition of early morning fog. It’s like air conditioning. And then it breaks and we have high 60s - mid 70s, sometimes low 80s.
Global warming is a hoax, global warming is a hoax, global warming is a hoax…..:)
If you repeat a lie often enough…blah blah lol.
Yickes!
BERLIN/PARIS (Reuters) - Angela Merkel was portrayed across Europe as the big loser of a euro zone showdown in Brussels after the German chancellor was forced to accept the crisis-fighting measures championed by countries struggling with their debts.
Newspapers in Spain, Italy and France on Saturday toasted the triumph of their leaders - Mario Monti, Mariano Rajoy and Francois Hollande - in pushing Merkel into a U-turn that would long have been unthinkable.
Even German newspapers said Merkel had been made to accept demands for the euro zone rescue fund to be able to inject aid directly into stricken banks from next year and intervene on bond markets to support troubled member states.
“There’s no doubt about it - the chancellor was blindsided at the euro summit,” wrote influential columnist Nikolaus Blome of Bild, a daily with 12 million readers.

Excellent! We are so blessed to have this man as our President. Let’s keep him in the White House!
Brilliant and beautiful. Thank you, President Obama:)
Dear Chips & TODers,
Since this may be considered repetitious, I’ve waited to place it well into a long thread. Hopefully some of you will read it and be supportive of what is requested.
I was haunted by this video through the night - to the point of being sleepless for several hours even after one of my typical 18h work days.
Amazing how much this video crystallized in the less than 2 min.
For me, and perhaps some or all of you, this video is iconic - iconic of a tragic, deep flaw in America, and of the extent to which that flaw causes incalculable harm.
For a few moments, Bondi, Scott and others were gleeful at the thought that they had struck a blow against the black guy in the Oval Office.
They weren’t winning a major case for the benefit of their constituency or the American people. They weren’t over joyed at having defended the Constitution.
Their joy was inextricably linked to damaging President Obama, and thereby contributing to the only goal the GOP has had since 20 Jan 2025 - limiting him to a single term.
The moment they realized their scam had failed, they had a sad, a big sad.
At no time did any of them evidence even a nanosecond of compassion for the millions of Americans who would have been immediately harmed; the millions who would be irrevocably harmed over the months and years ahead. No evidence of the recognition of the damage repeal of ACA would have on our economy, on our stature a s a moral and just society. None. Zip. Zero. Zilch.
The flaw is bigotry; the price of that flaw, a huge gapping hole in the soul of America.
Until we stop hating because of race, gender, etc., we will see enormous harm done because that hate spills from the target to harm a wide swath of others, to harm our culture, our sense of community, society; to denigrate the Promise of America.
On 6 Nov 2012, we must begin repairing that flaw more diligently and persistently than at any other time in our brief history.
Please spread this video:
Please let Ms Bondi know that she will NEVER #EtchASketch her behavior from history:

I’m guessing the African American woman in the background was the one who told them they were wrong. ? :) :)
it looked to me like the older lady with short blond hair showed them her phone, with a serious expression. i was interested to see the faces of the aa ladies, too, as they watched the pols react.
Update: When I left the computer at well past midnight PDT the video had less than 300 views. It now has over 7000 views. Let’s make it 30,000,000 or more by 6 Nov 2025 :)

The president is spending the weekend at Camp David. He returns to Washington on Tuesday.
Thank God. This was a busy week and Malia’s bday is coming up.
If I’m not wrong after celebrating Malia 14th birthday, and the 4th of July, POTUS will be going on a two day bus tour to Ohio and Philly.
Yup!
This pic is crazy. Look at those signs. This is in DC!

BAM! Get after that lying POS meta! He makes me ill
Meta, the ACA also deals with medicaid/medicare abusers like governator ricky scott… He’s made because it will be harder for him and his friends to not get caught…. ha,ha, ha, ricky…
If anyone ever deserved a break and a rest HE does! I hope the weekend with family is just the respite he needs. He is the hardest working president of my lifetime, and I remember them back to Truman.
Associated Press= WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. John Dingell leaned back in his plush office chair and considered the feed that scrolled over his flat-screen TV at 10:07 a.m. Thursday. The Supreme Court, it said, had upheld the health care law he had worked for his entire life — and his father for nearly a quarter-century before that. And Chief Justice John Roberts, appointed by Republican President George W. Bush, had sided with the court’s liberals on the crucial point.
“Well, I’ll be damned,” the dean of the House said quietly. His staff erupted in hoots and then, in a few cases, tears. One aide tore up a contingency plan for what to do if the court had ruled otherwise. “Ha!” Dingell said.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/feedarticle/10314517
Crying now and I haven’t even read the article yet. Ha! Indeed Rep Dingell.
It may take a while, it may take years, even decades, but sometimes the good guys do win.
I LOVE THIS PART:
“Pelosi, now occupying a smaller suite of offices as House minority leader, told her close friend and fellow Californian George Miller that the court’s decision was “a great victory.”
“You bet your ass” it is, Miller responded, according to her office.
“I did,” Pelosi is said to have replied. ” :-D
————-
AND THIS PART:
Dingell, 85, the longest-serving House member in history, clearly expected the court to strike down the law. He cautioned his staff to refrain from “dancing in the streets just yet.” But gradually, as he took in the news that Roberts had voted with the majority to uphold the law, he grinned.
“I think my little dad would (be) grinning up above,” the Michigan Democrat said.
John Dingell Sr., elected to the House in 1932, had been a sponsor of the Social Security program and national health insurance. The senior Dingell died in office in 1955; his son was elected that year to the same seat.
Pelosi used Dingell’s gavel when the House passed the health care act in 2010. He attended the Senate vote early Christmas Eve morning 2009. And he was at Obama’s side when the president signed the measure into law.
“We did it,” Dingell said Thursday.”

Thank YOU Bob!
Thanks Bob you are a warrior!
I thought now might be a good time for little music interlude, since the incomparable Imogen Heap’s voice has been floating around in my head all day.
For all you lurkers out there, who’ve been wondering whether you should jump into the fray and volunteer this election season; asking yourself whether you’ve got it in you, I say, if not you, then who? If not now, then when? Any little thing you can do, will be move us one step closer to transforming the world for the better.

Chips, what time did the President get home last night? I trust he was not affected (physically I mean) by the winds/storms in D.C. area? I thought it was weird that he would return from comforting/speaking to the disaster in CO only to have one to address in his own back yard. I hope none of our TODers were hurt or lost property if they live in that D.C./VA area.
Hi Daisy, he was due back around 8:0 last night, I had no idea the weather was that horrible, yikes.
